I ordered the crying tiger ribeye. I knew something was up when the order took significantly longer than my friends, when I ordered the same thing right after him. I have listed below multiple problems that I found with the restaurant and service. Quality: there was a good sear on the meat and the fries were fine, but the steak was completely RAW on the inside. Like literally blue. Size: i initially saw yelp reviews on the steak, and thought that it would be a sizeable portion given its price, but no, the portion was about half the size of the plate, and there was barely any meat to it. Service: after telling the waiter my meat was completely blue, he acted extremely nonchalantly about it, as if this was a common thing and just offered to reheat it. He even had the AUDACITY to tell us that they "usually try to aim for medium rare but sometimes it comes out a little under or a little over," completely trying to play off the fact that it was wayyy under what was given. When the meat came back out, you could tell all that was done was that the plate was thrown into the microwave for a few seconds. The surface of each meat had cooked a little, but there were still significant portions that were still blue. They even tried to cover this up by adding more garnishes to the plate to distract the fact that they were too lazy to reheat it properly. All in all, terrible service and terrible food, not worth the trip at all, especially when The Cottage is right next door. read more

The cutest beach coffee shop in La Jolla. My new favorite spot :) I've been here twice now. Once for breakfast and once for lunch and both times the food + coffee was exceptional. It's not your same old breakfast spot. You can tell they put a lot of thought into each dish and it really shows with such great flavors added make each dish a little unique, but so loved and delicious. Been coming here almost every week and this place does not disappoint! Great location, great ambiance but most importantly the workers here are very personable. This place just opened and is bomb! I had an appointment nearby and found them on Yelp and looked at the photos, everything looked good, the menu sounded awesome and so I decided to try them! I got the lobster sandwich with fries and both items were perfection. The lobster sandwich had a nice buttery and crispy toast, the lobster filling was more heavy on the lobster and less on the sauce (to my preference) with some sprouts. The fries were fresh, crispy and served with a nice dab of aioli. Service was very friendly, the ambience and decor was inviting and the only downside is I know this place will get popular and be busy. read more

I've been waiting for this place to open! I went yesterday and today for lunch. Everything is so fresh and tastes like it was homemade or in a small batch. The smoothie I had didn't go all watery on me which is impressive! I'm looking forward to trying other menu items as well. They have a great selection of items and all of the staff are super friendly. The place has great relaxing beach vibes and is not loud. The food at Blue Whale tasted fresh and was very tasty and delicious! All the restaurants near by had 45+ minute wait for two on a Saturday morning and this place had some tables, so we gave them a try. We were very impressed with everything also considering that this was only their second day open (10/7/23). Super friendly staff, the chef came out to check on everyone too. The water they offered was lemon cucumber infused. Loved the Hawaiian ambiance - very cute. My husband got the breakfast burrito (forgot to take a picture of his), he said it was really good and loves the sauces it came with. Probably 4.5 stars. Seating is first come first serve. So when it's busy it can be tough to get a table. Food is very good. I've eaten there 5 times and the food was always great. I've had burgers, lox, burritos, pancakes and all were very good. They also have açaí bowls which deserve special mention on how good they are. Seating is outside and some inside. No cash only card. This place was not good. I ordered the vanilla chai and the french toast. My friend got the burrito. They brought his burrito out first then took our table number despite me saying we still had more coming. And then we went back inside about three times to ask about our order. And when my French toast came finally (cuz they had no idea where to put it since they took our number) it didn't come with a fork. When I asked the server for one she rolled her eyes and was like "sure..." and brought me a fork and stuck it right in my food. I also got the vanilla chai which was the worst drink I've ever had. It tasted like milk with a little cinnamon in it. I had to ask if I could "possibly have more chai in the drink cuz it tasted like-" and the server said "taste like milk yeah I can get you more." So they KNOW their drinks are bad if she could finish my sentence. All of the staff look miserable, food is mediocre and expensive, and drinks are terrible. read more

First timer here! My boyfriend wanted to try out this place after seeing posts about it so thought we would give this a try for brunch since we both had the day off and it was a bit overwhelming at first. Immediately entering the restaurant, we weren't sure if we would be able to dine in like our original plan because of the limited tables and chairs and the place overall was busy. When we ordered, the gentleman at the front was really nice and told us there should be enough time to order and then find a place to sit. We originally wanted to try the ube pancakes but they were sold out so they recommended to order the french toast. We ordered one french toast and one blue whale brekky with soyrizo. It took about 20-25 minutes to find an open table and then we were able to sit. At first there was confusion with our order but they ended up fixing it. When the food came out, I was surprised with how much they charged and the amount of food that was given; the food was good but I'm not sure if I would come back to order breakfast from here again. The aesthetic was really nice and it's a cute little spot, but just some factors to take into account was the wait time, the dining space, and the price/food. read more
