Wow, Board & Batten is worth all five of these stars! My wonderful girlfriend wanted to treat me to dinner and picked B&B after having her own terrific experience there. I really did not have many expectations, so it's fair to say that this restaurant far exceeded those expectations. B&B quickly just became a favorite of mine in the area! We grabbed a table outside on their beautiful patio area. With the cooler weather setting in, I brought a sweater with me... and had to put it on right away. Our friendly server stopped by immediately and took our drink order. Drinks came out promptly and a took a sip of my B&B Manhattan just as promptly! Since I am a cold-weather wimp, I needed to warm up... and alcohol is one of those tried and true solutions, right? The Manhattan was delish and did the trick... at least for a little while. Before our food came out, we subsided to the cold... and not wanting to bother anyone to bring over a heater for us, we decided to move inside to one of the available tables. Our server welcomed us inside so we could defrost. I ordered the short rib and the last bite was packed with as much flavor as the first bite - soooo good! We finished our meal with the butterscotch creme brulee... and it provided another "wow" moment! With those figs and caramel corn, I could live on this variation of the typical creme brulee - incredible!! This was a new spot for me and I LOVED it's look. So disappointed I couldn't join the patio vibes during brunch because of rain! Nonetheless, I'm gluten-free and everything is labeled or they know whether it contains the allergen. Definitely recommend the cauliflower soup and mushroom grilled cheese. We got the panna cotta and it was INCREDIBLE. Loved that tasty blood orange and fig. Coming back so I can have wine on that cute patio. read more

Went for a quick date night. Ambiance was nice. Food was great. White fish was seasoned and cooked perfectly. 8 oz flat iron was seasoned and cooked to a good medium rare. Broccolitini was not overcooked and had a slight crunch. Wine list was not huge. Simple yet diverse. We ordered a bottle of Riesling which complemented the meal perfectly. The almond pound cake which was garnished with cherries was light and not overly sweet. Our server James was phenomenal. Overall experience was a nine out of 10. only reason for the one point deduction is it was a bit loud. We were able to make a reservation same day which was nice. We just had the best New Years Eve dinner Ever! The wine pairings with each course was perfect and opened up some new wines to us. South African, Western Cape , Graham Beck Brut Rose', Western Cape from South Africa, I may have not ever tried but paired with the Point Ryes Blue Cheese, Hazelnuts and Champagne Vinaigrette Roasted Beet & Pear salad was amazing! Not to mention the seared scallops , cauliflower puree, caper honey caramel and almonds paired with Dr. Loosen Riesling form Mosel ,Germany was umm..well I'll be back just for that pairing. Yuck. Menu is really weird, I didn't really like anything in the menu. I love everything and I'm not a picky eater either. I asked if they had a cream pasta dish, so I ordered cacio pepe pasta. It was extremely salty, and the sauce was literally chicken broth... I'm not someone who complains unless something is really bad and I was on a date so I didn't want to look like I was high maintenance. My date saw me struggling so he tasted it and he was like damn that's salty... He called to have them take it back because it was really really bad. Awesome! I hesitated to write a review because I don't want this secret gem of a restaurant to get too popular, but then again, they deserve it. My dinner friends and I had the swordfish, pasta pomodoro, and steak and all were wonderful. Almond cake to finish. Only missed an espresso. Great service and menu. Love seeing places have a smaller but unique menu. Tells me they are experts at what they do rather than being just okay at a bunch of stuff. After eating there, I can confirm my theory. On Thursday, March 27th myself and four friends had reservations for my friends 80th birthday celebration. Board and Batten was a restaurant she had on her radar she want to visit. When we arrived at 4:00 p.m., a very unfriendly male stood at the gate as if we were not welcome. He open the gate to allow us to enter, but in a very unfriendly manner. Once we were seated all the employees had the same disposition as, unfriendly, accept the young man who waited on our table. He was very friendly. All other staff working appeared very unhappy. Once our dinner was over we all agreed this is a place we would never return too. As we were leaving the unfriendly guy was again standing at the door and never once looked our way or said not one word. Also, a young lady was also standing there with him. We visited Board & Batten after it being highly recommended to us. Our meal and drinks were very good, however the price point was a little on the expensive side. I am rating 3 stars because although our dinner was good, I believe this restaurant gave me food poisoning. I reported this information to the restaurant and they responded (via email) asking for some further details. I responded quickly and have not heard from them since (this was about 2 weeks ago). Poor customer service and communication, on top of the steep prices, does not have me running back to this restaurant anytime soon. read more

My husband and I went to Board & Batten a couple weeks ago for date night. The server was very professional and explained everything in great detail. We ordered the sweet rolls and chopped wedge salad (without onions) for an appetizer. The set of 4 rolls were a bit too salty on top, but you could easily scrap off the salt. The chopped wedge salad was not what we expected though. We expected an actual wedge salad, but that was a misunderstanding for us, since chopped means mixed greens. The dressing was good and the salad was large enough to split. My husband and I split the prime flat iron steak with shoe string fries. We requested regular ketchup and not the spicy ketchup it comes with. Everything was done perfect and correctly! The flavors and temperature were just right. Our server asked if we wanted dessert, which we declined. He brought us a little dessert drink instead, which was a nice surprise. The meal and service were excellent. The inside of the restaurant doesn't look like it's fancy, in my opinion, but the service and food make you feel like you are in an upscale resort. This place is a gem in a very low key area. Really cool environment and very quiet. The best is to enjoy the outdoor patio on a nice day. Probably one of my favorite spots to eat at in North East Mesa based on the environment I brought my parents and wide here for a mid breakfast lunch expecting to have some breakfast items since that's what we were looking to eat. During the week, they only do lunch and dinner which was fine cause the food choices looked great. I really had my eye on the best salad cause beets are the best! The salad was pretty light and not a big portion by any means, but I'm a fan if quality over quantity which is exactly what this salad was. Great choice if you love delicious fresh beets! My wife went with the French dip which was really tasty! Good amount of food that can be shared. I ended up having some of that since I had a small beet salad. My mom ordered the pot pie which usually isn't something I would interested in, but this pot pie was awesome. Nice flaky crust with a delicious tasting soup that would make me order it next time. This is a lovely little place for a social hour gathering (3-5 pm) or a meal. The patio is my favorite place to sit. Wait staff is very professional. Portions are small and prices are higher but the atmosphere is sophisticated and lends itself to the menu. I recently had the sangria which was on happy hour pricing and well appointed. The bacon wrapped dates and noble bread pretzel were delicious! My friends ordered many other appetizers from the menu- probably all of them and everyone gave a thumbs up to what they ordered. Really good food in a pretty atmosphere. You would never expect some place like Board and Batten to be tucked away in an industrial area in old Mesa - we almost drove past it, in fact. We had the olives and cheese (wish there was more of the house-made ricotta and that the olives were pitted, but since they were warm, it was at least easier to get the pits out), fried chicken sandwich (good, but needed more sauce or pickles or something for a little more flavor), and the French dip grilled cheese (holy crap, I wasn't even hungry after my half of the chicken sandwich, but you bet I cleaned my plate - SO GOOD). Our Friday Date Night Crew found this Gem up in Mesa. Beautiful restaurant in a really nice setting, big patio in front and nice big bar inside. To start I had one of my favorite IPAs, then went to one of the best Old Fashions I have had. We all shared the shrimp, octopus and Squash for apps, all were delicious! I had Swordfish for Dinner and it was incredible, cooked perfectly with great taste to it. Finished with a Salted Caramel bar for dessert which was of course amazing. My wife and I have been wanting to come here for a while and we finally had a chance. We went at 4:30 since we saw they reopen at 4:00. When we arrived it was pretty empty. Maybe 3 total parties inside and one party outside. We asked if we could be seated outside but was told no they're by reservation only. Which seems strange seeing it is May in Arizona and there were plenty of open seats inside and out. It wasn't until after we had ordered some drinks and our first appetizer that we were told there was a "cancellation" outside and was offered to change our seating to outside. We really enjoyed all of the food, cocktails and the service, but felt that the hostess's could've been more inviting and friendly. Also would've liked to have seen some sort of happy hour menu but nonetheless we will definitely come back for the delicious food, try the octopus. Might be the best we've had! read more
