They charged me $800 to nail a piece of plywood on my wall. I was desperate because we just had a break-in. It seems kind of predatory.

If I could give zero stars I would. Yes, I called Bret at 9pm on the Friday after Thanksgiving for an emergency board up. I would have preferred he tell me he couldn't do the job instead of what he did. Arrived at our house after 11pm only to discover he didn't have any wood to do the board up. Wouldn't one think that a board up company would bring wood with them to a job? He disappeared for over an hour, returning after 12:30 am and you can see from the photos below how he boarded up the broken window -- it is a joke. An old bench top? A stolen real estate agent sign? Screws sticking out of the wood - a huge danger! He finished somewhere around 2am. I asked him to please come back and at least put some plywood on the inside of the window/door to make it more insulated and safe! After complaining that my husband (below) had given him a 1 star review he did agree to come back and redo the board up in exchange for a better review. I agreed. He never showed. Our text exchange is that he would arrive at 10am and he was free until 4pm. I started texting at 11am inquiring as to his ETA - never got a response. So instead of "revised review" thanking him for fixing his very unprofessional and inept job, Board Up Boys is getting a negative review with all the details and photos. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! They took our sliding glass door frame and $150 deposit, and have ghosted us the last 2 weeks. We still don't know where our door is and haven't heard back. I've asked multiple times for the frame to be returned so that we can at least get another company to measure and replace the glass, but The Board Up Boys are keeping it hostage and won't even return my calls. If they don't return my door frame, I will be in the position to have to replace the entire sliding glass door unit for $4-5K, will they pay for this? I contacted Board Up Boys for a window repair. They came and didn't complete the service. Bret took the frame to his car and then said he'd return at 3pm. He never returned and then ignored messages, emails, and phone calls. I had to come onto this yelp profile to reach him, and he said "phones are down windows are on their way" But no one ever came and I never got my frame back. I told him we didnt want his services after his inability to communicate. He left us without a window for 3 days+ and now we can't repair the window without the frame. See the screenshots but I highly highly do no recommend this service and I'm actually very upset with yelp for including them in their window quoting system. This business is unethical and unprofessional. I had to file a police report and now have to take them to small claims court. read more

Board Up Boys runs a scam to get deposits for work they don't intend to finish. Our office was vandalized on Sunday January 8, 2023 and several windows were cracked or broken. After the police left, I called "Board Up Boys" to hire them to haul away the broken glass and board up the broken windows: * At 12:02AM Monday January 9 Board Up Boys quoted $1,100 on the phone to board up the windows and clean up and haul away the glass. They said that based on the pictures that I sent, they could probably complete the work in 1-2 hours. * At 12:08AM they texted to say they could begin repairs within an hour but that I would have to pay 50% of the cost up front. * Between 12:08-12:58AM, they sent a series of different Square.com payment links to take payment for amounts varying between $547-552.50. Each time, the payment would go through and then immediately void the transaction. This happened with various links about 8 different times. At one point, they thought they were texting me another link, but sent me someone else's Visa Credit Card number. * At 1:05AM they said they could just take the payment in person when they arrived. At 1:07AM they texted, "cya soon." * At 2:16AM I tried to call them but got no answer, so I texted asking for an estimated time of arrival (ETA). They did not respond for 30 minutes. Finally, at 3:04AM they sent a note saying that they were "Five min" away. * Approximately 3:30AM they arrived to survey the damage. They used my credit card to process a payment for $547, and then went to their vehicle "to get tools" (brooms). * They spent about 30-40 minutes breaking the remaining glass out of the window frames, so that instead of cracked glass standing in the frames, there were now gaping holes (measuring about 8x4 feet) on three sides of the building that anyone could walk through. (Our office is an urban setting with a large homeless population encamped within 100 yards of our building.). * After removing the glass, they told me that they had not brought any wood with them and that they would need to go pick it up "from a nearby location." They said it would take 20 minutes. They left the building at approximately 4:20AM. As they walked away, one of them said to the other, "let's get something to eat." * I continued to clean up the glass they had broken, but when they had not returned at 5:30AM, I began to call and text them again. They did not respond. * At 6:05AM I texted, "Are you coming back, or do I need to hire someone else to finish the job?" They did not respond. I continued to call, with no response. * At 6:44AM I texted, "I've called & texted and you haven't responded. If you don't respond, I'll assume you aren't coming back and ask AmEx to reverse the charges." They continued to ignore my calls and my texts. So, by a little after 7AM I began calling other businesses to see if I could find someone to replace them. * At 7:20AM they sent a note to say they were "in the Marina" (Marina Del Rey) and had "been on the phone with the bank" and they were "getting wood for another job." But they gave no indication when they would be back. Marina Del Rey is only 9-10 miles away, but in morning rush hour traffic, it is a 40+ minute drive from our office. * By 8:30 I was able to have another vendor onsite, with plywood and making the repairs. * Board Up Boys came back at about 9:30AM to pick up their tools (a flashlight and 2 brooms) but the repair work was well under way by then by the other vendor. * I told the two guys from Board Up Boys that they had wasted 7 hours of my time and had not done the two things that I had agreed to pay them to do: 1. Clean-up & haul away the glass, and 2. Board up the broken windows. I told them that I had already called AmEx and that I planned to get my deposit back because they had not performed the work they had agreed to complete. They apologized and said "I understand. I'm sorry we weren't able to get this done for you" and then they left. They seemed content to roll the dice to see if the credit card company would actually refund me. In response to the "it's not true" post from Board up boys responding to my review, I have updated pictures to include the text thread. I hired this company and they alleviated alot of the stress. Took a tad longer but because they did such a thorough job. should you have to use a restoration company THIS is the place to take care of it. reasonable in what they charged me. Helping a friend whose home was burglarized and had their glass sliding door shattered. Needed someone to come board the place up before a glass repair person could come. Called at 4:20p and agreed to the rate and he said he would be there in hour. 1:20 later I try texting and calling to make sure they had the right address or see if they ran into any issues. 1hr 30min later try again, 2-3hrs go by and they have completely ghosted and didn't answer the phone. I really can't understand how a business ghosts their customers. If something changed or he didn't want the job anymore or something came up, he could have called back or let me know. Not really sure what's up with these guys. We had a break in through a sliding glass door, so we called them up. They showed up reasonable time and did an excellent job of boarding up the door. We were impressed. A day or two later they showed up to measure for the glass and it turns out they needed to take the door and have the glass installed elsewhere. They disassembled the door, re-boarded up the doorway and were off. At that time we were told we'd have it back "Wednesday," which was about three days out. Wow! So far Five Stars... BUT THEN Wednesday came. No contact. Thursday came. No contact. Friday, US: Checking in. BUB: Our offices were broken into, things are not in order, I'll check on it and we'll get back to you. No contact. Sent a text or two. No response. Sunday US: checking in again. BUB: I hurt my arm (or something) so it's been tough. In fact, I'm on my way to pick up the door right now, but, I with this arm, I don't know if I'll be able find someone to get it out today, but can probably do it Monday. ME: Ok, just let me know when, I'll need to leave work to meet you there. BUB... no further response. Monday: US: checking in. BUB: Hey, arm hurt US: OK, well today sounds like it will be rough, and I'm at work, can we go it Tuesday? BUB: Tomarrow is great I just got out of the hospital this morning gives me some extra time (at this time I'm beginning to wonder. 1 Does this guy have the worst luck on the planet and 2. did everyone working for BUB quit? we had 5 different guys show up here during those first two calls but now, suddenly, it's sounds like a sole proprietorship with one worker? They came out to board up my window. Absurd prices to board up a window. But of course have no real option during that time of night. I paid by credit card over the phone. I had to provide my credit card details to them and I rarely use my credit card- only use it on controlled purchases. This was a one off type of use. Four days later I have fraudulent charges on my card. This is the only place I provided my credit card information over the phone to and then I get fraud charges. Wow guys, very clever- at least try to be a little less obvious of what you're doing with paying customers information. Don't trust this place period- bunch of rip offs and thief's. read more

We needed someone to come and board up a street facing patio window that had been broken, and needed them immediately. The window was broken at 6:30, we did the research and called them at 7. They gave us a reasonable quote, kept us in the loop as far as where they were in the schedule in getting to us, did the job, cleaned the debris and left us secure and buttoned up. My good friend/colleague recommended Board up Boys (as he recently used them) and I gave Bret (owner) a call on his direct line. He answered all my questions in a helpful manner. It appears that he services Redondo Beach and surrounding area. However, he made the drive out to LA/koreatown and as much as I insisted that he charged a fuel charge , he didn't. I found that very honorable! Ultimately, my boss tipped him sufficiently to cover fuel expense seeing he wouldn't charge it. If you like the work, don't forget to tip! I experienced the exact same this where my deposit $300 and my property sliding glass door frame valued over $1200 were stolen by Bret Shusterman the owner of Board Up Boys. He promised to have the glass door completed in 5 days and now it has been over 2.5 weeks. He stopped returning any texts or calls after few days. Once I saw the other reviews I realized it was quick contractor scam. However in this case contractor committed multiple felony thefts. And police reports should be filed by anyone that experienced theft. In California, felony grand theft is codified under Penal Code Section 487, which states that grand theft is the "unlawful taking of another's property valued above $950. What Bret also claimed most of his business comes from referrals from Police Officers in LAPD, Santa Monica PD, Long Beach PD and they all will be notified. Without knowing they are setting up victims of break in to be victimized by this person. We are looking for other victims so the information can be provided to the detective assigned to the case. read more

Board Up Boys was amazing! Our house was burglarized and the company was suggested by the police. They arrived about half an hour after we called them. They boarded up our sliding door and vacuumed all of the glass. We also mentioned how there were traces of glass in the bedrooms and they went out of their way to clean that as well. Amazing, do not hesitate to call them and explain your needs. 5 STAR RATING. Sunday late afterrnoon. Disaster strikes... An antique swiveling mirrors measuring an apparently odd 18"x36" topples over me as I'm rearranging furniture and shatters over my break spraying shards and daggers and fine powdered mirror all over the room. As I manage to escape the battlefield unscathed I gather my senses and make a mad dash to find any replacement mirrors online or at local hardware or retail stores. Plenty of mirrors but none at the right size! The clock is ticking on any remaining weekend outlets as an option, soonest online deliver over a week away and the boss is home tomorrow. After calling 9 different vendors with no answer, I finally left a message for The Board Up Boys. Within a few minutes the owner called me, listened to my tale and my urgent need of replacement today. He took my details and quickly called his tech to check inventory - reliable calls back and forth over next ten minutes and we sort out a absolutely fair price and scheduled time for the tech to arrive at my location. Two techs arrived, were courteous and went beyond the call of duty to replace the mirror, take extra care and attention to mount it and extended an extra courtesy at the end of the job regarding payment.
