Ambiance, furniture, even how they run the place is exactly like BC a few blocks down, EXCEPT, there are no customers when we came. :X We didn't let that get in our way, although I have to admit, I was a bit worried. This IS a seafood place after all. ORdered the shrimp and catfish basket. NOT FRESH AT ALL. HUGE HUGE HUGE difference between this and BC. Catfish tasted like it's been frozen for a really long time. Pirate themed Boiling Crab without out the wait!!!! On the day night of the USC vs. UCLA football game (GO TROJANS!) A group of friends and I headed over here during halftime to get our grub on while watching the second half of the game. Victory tasted even sweeter with the Cajun style seafood. What we got (all with medium house special): 2 pounds of shrimp ($8.99 per lb)(1 lb was free cause of how much we ordered) - I personally didn't' find the house special flavoring as yummy as Boiling Crab, but it still satisfied all of my buttery garlic needs. We didn't know about the free lb of shrimp with our order, but our nice waitress let us know as we ordered :) Of all of the things we ordered I think the shrimp is the most bang for your buck 1 pounds of clams ($9.99 per lb) - The clams were a good size and meaty for clams but it think next time I would pass just because I think I would want to try other things on their menu. 2 pounds of mussels ($8.99 per lb) - This was my FAVORITE of the night! Initially we only ordered 1 pound, but it was so good we ordered another! The mussels were super meaty and tasted amazing with the house special flavoring! 1 extra of potatoes ($2.50) - It was an nice extra, but careful they are piping hot when they come out to the table 1 extra of sausages ($2.99) - A good way to add a little more heart attack to the meal. They gave a really healthy portion of sausages in the bag and if you are a meat eater I think this would be for you French Fries ($3.99) - Not my favorite at all. There really wasn't any seasoning and just were sad compared to the delicious Cajun fries at Boiling crab. Sweet potato fries ($4.50) - These also come out pretty temperature hot so again I warn you! Pretty good first experience! My gf has always been curious to try this place because unlike Boiling crab, we don't have to wait 2 hours to eat some shrimp... First off, parking is a little weird here considering the tiny lot in front is... tiny. So I guess you can park on the street or nearby lot. And there was no wait near dinner time! Unless you come here after 8ish (small wait). We ordered cajun fries (3.99) which were just normal fries (not bad) with super spicy powder on top... probably won't get that next time lol and 1.5lb ($11/lb) shrimp house special. The sauce was surprisingly good! Gf said it was a bit coconuty lol but definitely a nice surprise. We also got 10pc sausage inside the bag ($4) which were just normal thin hot dogs. 4.5 stars. My go to place when I want Cajun seafood and do not want to wait 2 hours at Boiling Crab. I usually order the shrimp in cajun, house special, and garlic butter sauce. My personal favorites are house special and garlic butter. Minimum order per flavor is a 1lb. Fries are really good too, I get it with the cajun seasoning (no extra charge). Very flavorful but not to overly salty. Also, don't be afraid to ask for a side of lemon and pepper if that's your thing! I will have to say I don't really like that their garlic is a pureed texture; I prefer the garlic to be diced. Plus, you can never go wrong with more garlic. I've never had to wait when I come. Service is always great and fast. Price for shrimp is around $11/ lb which is pricier than BC. There isn't much space for parking in the front, but you can most definitely park on the side streets. If you know you're going to be eating a lot, you can park a little further to walk off your food coma after your meal. read more

This place is by far, pound for pound, the best seafood place I've been to. Everything on the menu is great, especially with their HOUSE SPECIAL sauce. I would give this place 5 stars based on their crawfish alone. Their crawfish with the house special sauce is delicious! The sauce compliments the crawfish well and in my opinion, their crawfish is more delicious than boiling crab's (their crawfish is way bigger as well). The potatoes with the house special sauce is delicious as well. Ever since I've tried the crawfish at this place, I've constantly craved for it. When you come here, go for the crawfish, I guarantee you'll find it very tasty. I haven't really tried many of the other foods at this place so I can't really rate this restaurant based on anything else but the crawfish. For eaters who cannot take spicy, be aware that their seasoning is very spicy, so mild may be a little too spicy for those who are sensitive to spicy foods. I've been here a few times now and sometimes I want to give it 3 stars and other times 4 stars. Because I do go back occasionally, I decided to give it 4. The flavor is a tiny bit sweeter than I would like but it has grown on me. It's definitely better than waiting hours for boiling crab. The longest I've waited to be seated here is maybe 30-40 minutes but usually we get seated right away. The Cajun fries are basically fries with Cajun seasoning thrown on.... Literally the seasoning is all in the middle on the top. So it's more like regular fries, those grew on me too. The crab legs seem more expensive than other places but it might be because other places when you order a cluster it's not a whole pound and here they make sure it's a pound. So that could be good or bad depending on what you want. Definitely worth a try! read more

Came here on Memorial Day because I had the day off and was craving Boiling Crab for lunch.. but BC didn't open until 3PM so we quickly searched for an alternative nearby, leading us to this place. That being said, I know it sucks on a certain level, but this review is going to be a comparison to BC since that was the premise of the situation and point blank, they're doing the same stuff. There was no wait at this place which is definitely a plus. Probably bc of the day/time we went, but after reading some reviews, it seems to be the general consensus that the wait at this place is nowhere near that of BC, which, in my experience, can get to 1.5 hours if not more (lame). Ordered the cajun fries and sweet potato fries. Cajun ones definitely not as good as the ones at BC, these were closer to Burger King fries with a little seasoning on it that you couldn't really taste. Sweet potato fries are crinkle cut aka frozen and fried so mehh not sure how to feel about that but they tasted ok. The food was fine, their House Special marinade sauce stuff has less garlic in it than BC's Whole Shebang, which I actually preferred (I mean, I love garlic but I don't like it oozing out of my pores for hours on end after eating). The sausages were really good and actually the corn was better than at BC. They also offer the option of potatoes, which is nice. I do wish though, that they put more sauce in the bag. It was very difficult to re-dip things back into the back trying to get sauce that was definitely not there. Service was almost non-existent, but this is because it looked like there was only one girl working the medium-sized restaurant, serving as both host and waitress. I cut her slack for this, but management needs to work on this as a business practice. Oh and another thing that should be re-considered is the table arrangement. All the seats are bench style, which is fine, but the tables are so close together it's almost impossible to get in/out. The bench I sat on was against the table itself and I actually couldn't even slide in, I had to step in. $8.35 for half a dozen of blue point oysters the are cut in half to be served. I might has will have drove down to redondo beach for some more satisfying seafood. Crayfish were not fresh as they say. They are pre frozen from the taste of it. Clams are manila clams were you can buy for 3.99 at the market not worth they time for them when 70% are shell weight. King crab legs are 34 a pound. I understand that asians are usually rude when it comes to customer service, but this place is just so terrible! Don't get me wrong about the food though. The food is still really good! Yes, its not the same experience, but you know what...no one I was with seemed to mind. Specific to the restaurant 1) cheesy decor (even by Boiling Crab standards), 2) the Lemon-Pepper sauce was voted to be the best of the bunch, 3) the soup was meh, 4) they were out of a couple of things, like the crawfish and 5) there is absolutely no wait. I was introduced to Cajun style seafood in Vegas when my roomies and I were treated to "Hot and Juicy Crawfish". I had never been a fan of boiled seafood, but that place was a revelation. There was something about tearing through a whole animal with my bare hands before devouring it's meat that appealed to my Filipino soul. I dragged my sorry ass back to LA and bemoaned the fact that garlic, butter coated heaven was 300 miles away. Flash forward a few months and I found myself in Alhambra getting my ass whooped in a Street Fighter 4 tournament. My friends wanted to salvage the night and had found out about a place called Boiling Crab. The idea of finding a Cajun Boil place in LA buouyed my spirits and I dragged my deflated ego over. Alas, we were put off by the ridiculous 2 hour wait. Someone had noticed a similar joint a block away so we opted for Plan B and headed over to Boathouse. At first I was concerned about the lack of patronage. There was maybe one other group eating there while Boiling Crab was packed. Usually not a good sign. Setting our doubts aside, we sat down and ordered a couple pounds of crawfish and shrimp. As is tradition with these kinds of places, the food came in big plastic bags, swimming in our chosen sauces. So how did it taste? I for one, was pleasantly surprised. It was just as good as the Vegas place! By far, my favorite sauce is garlic butter. My way of eating my shrimp is to peel them, then re-dip into the sauce, making sure to grab some pieces of garlic along the way. I'd also spoon mounds of garlic onto my white rice for maximum heart clogging goodness. Other important things to know is that the fountain drinks have unlimited refills and the servers ain't hard on the eyes. Also, overall, this place is hella cheap. You can literally buy a pound of their shrimp all cooked and sauced for less than it would cost to buy raw shrimp at a grocery. The beer is also extremely cheap. I have since sampled the dungeness crab and the mussels and both are now included in our standard order. I'm told that the fries are also to die for. So yeah I love this place. We've been back roughly twice a month since that first time. You can take my opinion with a grain of salt though because I'm far from an expert and I haven't tried the Boiling Crab yet. However, the food tastes great to me and I never have to wait for a table. Will post a follow up review once I try Boiling Crab but until then, this is one of my favorite restaurants in all of LA. Bring your Filipino parents and Grandparents. They'll be confused at first but will feel right at home once they get in the groove. read more

This is the craziest place I've ever been to, and I found it completely by accident. I was driving down the freeway, my family was starving, so we pulled off in Alhambra.I had never even heard of Alhambra. I see this place and it has a sign that says Louisiana crawfish. Bingo! I pull over immediately. We walk in on a Saturday at 5pm and it was pretty empty. Just a bunch of wooden tables lined with paper on top. We sit down and order some oysters, shrimp in their recommended everything sauce, king crab legs in garlic butter and chicken tenders for the kids... they were all out of crawfish. The first thing they do is hand us plastic bibs and put a whole roll of paper towels on the table: a tell-tale sign things are gonna get messy. Messy is an understatement. Out come these plastic bags filled with our food floating in all the seasonings. You pull out the food as you eat and your hands become lost in dripping craziness. I had never seen anything like it. It was kinda fun. Different. A new experience for sure. My wife loved the king crab in the garlic butter. Said it was the best she had ever had. Me, I couldn't pinpoint the flavor. Garlicky yes, but something else. Not bad, but nothing that made my eyes roll in my head either. I still don't know how I feel about it. Same goes with the shrimp in everything sauce. My hands turned orange while eating those shrimps. The paper towels turned orange. It was messier than the messiest ribs I've ever had. Again, it was an interesting flavor that I cannot pinpoint. It was okay. If I was in the area I would definitely go back to try other things. Oh by the way, I really liked the oysters with the horseradish. My friends and I visited this place last night and before going here, I honestly was not expecting much. I figured that if this place turns out to be a bust just like Captain Crap, now called Cajun Symphony, I can always pay another visit to the Bucket Crab this weekend to make up for it. But my opinion about this place completely changed when I tasted their delicious House Special Sauce! So there were four of us and we ordered... - 2lb of shrimp (House Special Sauce, 1 mild & 1 medium) - 1lb of crawfish (House Special Sauce, mild) - Onion rings - Cajun Fries After placing our order, the waitress came back and told us that our bill came out to be over $35 so we qualified for ONE FREE LB OF SHRIMP! So we got that with the House Special Sauce (medium). What a great surprise! :-D our dining experience at BoatHouse was already off to a great start. It didn't take long for the food to arrive. What I liked about their sauce is how flavorful it is! It's not too runny nor too thick, and if I can recall correctly, the sauce at Boiling Crab is usually too thick for my liking. So this was perfect! The garlic pieces were decently sized as well. One thing I do regret ordering though, was the crawfish. It was my first time eating it and it took a lot of effort on my part to not get poked by the sharp little claws (yikes). After a couple tries, I sadly abandoned my bag of crawfish and moved on to the free order of shrimp (thank goodness for that!) Their Cajun Fries isn't as good as Boiling Crab though, there wasn't much seasoning on it and it's definitely more pricey than the fries at BC. I can't believe this place doesn't have as long of a line as BC, because the quality of the sauce is terrific. The next time you get the cravings for BC but don't have the time nor patience to spare, stop by BoatHouse. It's a lot better than settling for the mediocre food at Captain Crap-err- I mean Crab. Came here because the nearby boiling crab was 2 1/2 hr wait. After 1hr we said hell no & Drove over here. This was almost as good as BC. Service was nothing to write to home about. The food we ordered the house seasoning(everything) peel & eat shrimp 2lbs. Let me tell you they were some large jumbo prawns they had here. Very meaty we couldn't finish the 2lbs we would normally get at boiling crab. The snow crab legs 1lb $16.99 with garlic butter sauce well worth it. They were so sweet & tender I would go back just for these. It was better than boiling crabs garlic butter. Their Cajun fries were forgettable just regular ole fries with Cajun spice sprinkled on top. Not like BC the Cajun fries are seasoned & fried within. My sister & I came here last night (Sunday) around 8pm, looking to get our seafood grub on since we had driven down the 10 ALLLL the way to Alhambra without deciding what we wanted. My sister suggested crawfish, and since BC was waaaay too packed by now and seeing as All-In was back in Rosemead on Garvey, we opted to eat at the Boat House (second time here). PARKING: Is it just me, or do all crawfish joints have terrible, terrible parking? Parking isn't the best. The lot that the Boat House is on is already small - couple that with their oddly shaped building (the front juts out in a semi-circle) and you've got awkward parking spaces. Basically the front is just a free-for-all, try to park anywhere you can, as long as you fit on the diagonal parking spots. They've got a back lot, but it's still cramped. We actually had to circle around for a good 5 minutes before someone pulled out of their spot in the back & left (thank the lawd) (FYI: Don't try to park by The Hat (next door). They've hired a security guard recently, and he WILL tow you if you're not parking there specifically for The Hat.) FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The decor is very Boiling Crab-esque. Typical nautical theme with wooden furniture, wood panels, wood ERRTHANG. It's really dimly lit in here, which I hate. Like c'mon, I thought we were all past that 2009 Abercrombie & Fitch phase by now (I'm looking at you too Factory Tea Bar). Turn up at least SOME of the lights in here so I can see what I'm eating! SERVICE: I don't know what it is about this place, but why do they hire STRAIGHT-UP, RUDE waitresses, who have no idea what they're doing? As we walked in, it looked decently crowded (not super packed). My sister forgot something in the car so she runs back to get it, as I get us a table. At this point, a waitress from the back of the restaurant (near the kitchen) approaches me. I inform her that there's two of us and immediately upon hearing this, she doesn't greet me AT ALL. Instead, she walks right past me (with an air of attitude - yes, I can feel that from rude waitresses), grabs 2 menus, and throws them down on the closest table she "finds" for us. She walks away without explaining ANYTHING and I basically seat myself. As I'm looking at the menu, she comes back with the paper towel roll and some bibs, slams it down on the table, and walks away again. She was more polite when we were ordering, but only because it was a brief minute conversation since we had already decided what we wanted. When we later asked her for limes/salt & pepper, she completely ignored us and never brought any out. I ended up having to look for a different waitress (who was more polite, but still gave me some fake smiles) for it. The ENTIRE time we were there (about 1 & 1/2 hours) our waitress NEVER checked up on us. Instead, she sat on one of the stools at the bar and gossiped with the other girls working. My sister still tipped 15% to be polite, but honestly, service like that is worth less than .15% (basically did everything ourselves). FOOD: The crawfish was alright. We got 4lbs, medium/house special. For medium, it wasn't very spicy and there was little to no heat in the flavor of our crawfish. The house special honestly tasted like tons of garlic instead of any real cajun seasoning. The crawfish varied in size, but a lot of them were still really small (compared to All-In where their crawfish are HUGE). Some weren't cooked thoroughly, so the shells were still really tough, making it harder to peel (got more cuts than usual on my fingertips, boooooo) We also got half a dozen oysters which were fresh. They gave us lemons, marinara sauce, Tapatio, and what seemed to be... ginger? OVERALL: Terrible service with haughty waitresses. They act like they're the next (Asian) Tyra Banks, but really all they should be doing is taking their attitude down a few thousand notches (and bringing me my lime + salt & pepper sigh) Crawfish is decent, but the place needs to work on making their sauces more flavorful, without adding a million pounds of garlic into it. The bill came about to ~$45 with tax, before tip. VERDICT: I wouldn't come here again unless someone else REALLY liked this place & suggested we'd go. If I wanted crawfish without long lines at BC, I'd rather drive to All-In, despite it being back on Garvey. read more

Came in with boo man since the wait at boiling crab was an hour...place seemed ok it was the only other seafood spot near us and pressed for time...ordered the shrimp, lobster and crab...food is ok..service is sporadic..we got food in bags..no plates...had to ask for crab crackers...while 5 waitresses just stood around...had to flag them down for refills...terrible..the worst thing was at the end of dinner I went to the ladies room to find too three most disgusting rest rooms of my life...the doors were dirty..the ceiling vent was filthy...if the patron area is this gross I can only imagine what the kitchen is like..where is the health standard here .. definitely a place for Dept of health to grade... hazard written all over it.. will not return...do NOT recommend read more

Sweet potato fries-Great! Thick with ridges. Most sweet potato fries are cut thin. I like fat fries. Crawfish- good size tasted fresh. Clams- good size tasted fresh. Dungeones Crab- Too expensive. It was $12.99 per pound but the waitress said it is a 2 lb minimum. We though OK, $24 should be OK. We didn't know they were going to find the heaviest crab. It was $35. Our total bill (before tip) was $78 because of the crab. I like the garlic because it's not too minced. Sauce tastes the same as BC and CC. Waitresses- Hot. It was 7pm on Saturday night. The reason i did 4 and not 5 was food was great. Service was average, but girls are not rude and they do answer questions. The experience was cool. i'm a big fan of boiling crab and i urge you to go eat there, if you havent already, they have 2 locations in alhambra! this was my second time eating at boathouse and i did enjoy the experience. we walked in on a saturday night the weekend of college graduation and half the restaurant was empty. we got seated right away! the shrimp were large and fresh and their sweet potato fries were hot and yummy! =) i wish the sauce was more garlicky and spicy (i got the house special) the staff are really nice and helpful even with the confusing orders from a large group. if you get sausages in your bag of seafood, they are DELISH. spicy and tender yum! the prices are about the same as boiling crab so definitely go here if you dont feel like waiting! theres a few spaces around and behind the building or you can park in the lot next to it (which is for the hat but no one cares) the alcohol is a little pricy, but beer goes good with seafood =) read more

After trying this place I wouldn't go back to boiling crab. There's no 2 hour wait for this place & the sauce here tastes better than boiling crab, in my opinion. The whole shabang sauce at BC just tastes like oil, but at boat house I can taste the garlic flavor which is a plus! So their price for shrimp is 11.99 compared to 8.99 at BC, but it's because their shrimp are bigger and more meaty. The only thing I didn't like was their "canjun fries" which wasn't what I was expecting.. It was regular French fries seasoned with some chili powder. I thought it would look like BC fries. Service is great here! They take good care of you with constant checking up & refilling our drinks. Overall I'd come back again. read more

I think this place is as good as "the boiling crab" I feel like not a lot of people know about this location. I've been to this location enough times to notice this place is never crowded which is good because we don't have to wait in line but this place deserves to be crowded. They have great flavors for the Cajun shrimp. If you haven't tried this place you should. read more

Yes, I've been to boiling crab, and Yes, I did enjoy their food as well, but! I did try Boathouse first and for some reason I just like their food better. Don't hate me for it, but I just do...Less crowded and much tastier. I will admit though that the bathroom is like Lindsey Lohan's life.. a disaster! that being said I still enjoy this place. Ordered house special - 2 pounds of shrimp and 2 pounds of crawfish to go. I thought that the seasoning wasn't that great and the pricing for the portions were not reasonable at all. The restaurant was skimpy on the crawfish and shrimp! They were tiny in comparison to Boiling Crab :( We also ordered a catfish basket and we only got 4 pieces of cod for $9!! What a rip off! Like others, came here because BC was crowded and we had a party of 10+. Shrimp with house sauce-medium, 10.99/lbs = very yummy (first time trying so couldnt compare) mussels/clams with house special-medium= everyone enjoyed Fried mushrooms - a hit with the mushroom lovers Fried calamari - the calamari lovers hated, skip it.. too oily and pricey for what they serve. They serve it in a bed of unsalted fries and with a sauce that is either ketchup or a super cheap cocktail shrimp sauce. canjun fries: they.need.salt. Pitcher of beer: $15... and you don't get a full pitcher of beer. I have NEVER seen this before, but there is an insert in the center that's supposed to keep the beer cold. WHY? we're going to drink it right away! stupid and obvious attempt to serve at least 1/3 less. Service: Our food and drinks came right away after the order was taken. After that, service went down hill. the restaurant never had more than 4 tables busy. the restaurant was almost empty when we got there. The employees spent periods daydreaming looking outside and then when they woke up and happened to glance at us, then they would come over. So throughout the night, we would be neglected for a period... and then when we no longer need them, 2 would come at once. Food is good. Customer service is HORRIBLE. Took 20 mins for us to get asked if we'd like anything to drink. And when we finally got our food the waitress never checked on us. We would have to keep waiving them down to get refills or anything we needed. And the restaurant was not busy at all. And to top it off, I took off my ring and left it on the table by accident and when I called back the waitress said they "threw it away". Horrible experience with this restaurant. read more

The Boathouse is a seafood place I found one day when I was trying to eat at the Boiling Crab, which is actually right down the street from this place. The Boiling Crab is probably the most popular and well known out of all the crab by the pound places, but it has been out done by all the other "copy cats"- The Boathouse, Hot N Juicy, etc. I really hate to tell because now when I want to go to The Boathouse it may be packed, but this place is so good I had to say something. They have a good selection of sides to choose from , different types of crab, crawfish, shrimp, oysters, all by the pound, really good seasonings to choose from, you put these seasonings on your pound of whatever you order. It comes out to your table in a plastick bag soaked in season and juices, and you can have as mild or hot as you want it. I like to get the garlic butter snow crab, mild, steamed white rice , potatoes, and either an extra pound of crab or shrimp to share towards the end, by this time I'm friggin stuffed.
