I've been into trying old diner spots lately and gave Augie Burgers a try. I did order on a food delivery app and came in person to pick it up. The store is located at the corner of Del Mar Ave and Clary Ave. There is a small parking lot in the back. It was empty when I went at around 6 pm on a Monday. I was surprised that the order wasn't ready by the listed ETA. Once I checked in, that was when the staff started to pack up the order. This had me waiting a few minutes afterwards. The chili cheese fries were moderately crispy. It was salty and had a good amount of chili and the cheese layered from top to the bottom. It was a solid 7/10. For the double bacon cheeseburger, it was a bit crispy. It wasn't soggy, despite me waiting a bit to eat it. There was a good proportion of ingredients, as nothing felt overwhelming. I think I ordered the wrong thing but I didnt expect much from this place to begin with. Inside was super hot and humid and the AC wasnt working so we sat outside. Needed the restroom but it was a complete mess (take that what you will..if you know what I mean) and I held it in anyways. I asked for a water cup and there was dust floating everywhere inside I barely sipped it. The staff is always friendly and when you order food, it doesn't take too long to get your order. They have an indoor and outdoor seating area. The restroom is gender neutral but it's narrow. They are now open 7 days a week and offer breakfast from 7am to 12pm. Their pancakes are fluffy and you can order 2 or 3 pieces. Augie's is a complete hole in the wall and a hidden gem. With the feel of a classic diner, it's both eerie and comforting at night, surrounded by dark nothingness and mostly blank streets. Upon entering, I was immediately welcomed by a very friendly service staff member who was patient with me while I went through the menu for a few minutes. There were a plethora of options, ranging from a wide array of breakfast foods such as platters, burritos, and pancakes to lunch and dinner options like Mexican plates, burgers, sandwiches, and fish & chips. I ended up going with one of my favorites in the tuna melt on rye with fries on the side. I think this might have been the best tuna melt I've ever had. Incredibly flavorful, with generous amounts of tuna spilling out with every bite, I cherished all the time I had with it. The bread was perfectly toasted, and all the contents within meshed well. Mixed feelings about this place. But this is for you folks who are reading this to decide. I ordered carne asada fries, and a hamburger. The hamburger was pretty uneventful, being on the drier side of things. definitely needs the cheese to make it not taste like the sahara. The carne asada fries were made with refried french fries and which were super stale. You can tell because the actual potatoes were super dry even though being re-fried. The carne asada they used came out of a container that was precooked at some arbitrary date then warmed up on the griddle, which made the asada also super dry. The only thing I was missing to complete the theme here was an Asahi Super Dry. Everything was super dry. Everything needed lots of sauce to make it palatable. Also, important to note that they put the refried fries into a styrofoam box, which had melted by the time I take opened the container due to the heat melting the styrofoam onto the french fries. Total price: $19.xx. At this price point, I feel a little taken. I can think of several other hispanic or burger joints I would rather frequent in the area, so it is unlikely I will be back. It's location is rightly on the corner so easy to find and parking is ample with their own lot. It was after 7 pm and not too busy on Tuesday.
