Stopping in with our kids we got a wide sample of the menu and it hit the trifecta of good food, filling, and value. Fans of Waffle House, the pecan waffles and chocolate chip pancakes exceeded expectations; both were much more substantial than expected. Heard about this diner a while ago and was in town and had to try it. Came here for breakfast. I ordered French toast with hash browns, bacon and eggs! Everything was amazing. Very fulfilling! French toast was nice and thick. Nice little crisp on the outside and not too soft. Hash browns were seasoned really well. Weren't too salty or bland. Who doesn't love a 24 hour diner? Apparently us.. We got in pretty late to Alexandria and this place was recommended to us. Honestly? If we had known the options, we would have grabbed premade sandwiches from 7 eleven. Ok so the place had one server and one cook. The tea tasted like there was fruit punch in it, so we switched to a root beer. I ordered the country fried steak and my husband ordered the patty melt. The country fried steak was the saddest excuse for country fried steak I have ever seen. I was offered brown gravy and sausage gravy? So I just got brown. Either already made or a powder mix reheated with water. The mashed potatoes were texturally weird. I know they were instant but maybe not stirred enough with hot water? Even the veggies were weird, tasted old. The broccoli was yellow. The patty melt...The rye bread was good and toasted perfectly. The beef patty was probably the most bottom rung beef I have had since my adolescence. The green beans tasted reheated out of a can that has probably been there since Bob & Edith originally opened the restaurant.. It left a lot to be desired. Always a treat to grab breakfast at Bob and Edith's! They get busier as the weather warms up, but the food is worth the wait. I love the pancakes while my husband always gets the steak and eggs. The coffee is good and just keeps coming. The only reason I can't give five stars yet is because the Hilltop location is still short of staff so there can be a bit of a wait on service time. I went in this morning based off of a review that stated they had the best cheese steak in the area. Hmmmmm well it was okay for a diner for sure . Not the best but still a solid sandwich. I didn't really care for the fries or the chocolate cream pie which just tasted artificial , which is sad because it looked amazing. Bob & Edith's in old town is a staple. I tried something new even though I've been here many times. I tried the Breakfast sampler- which has 3 meats, eggs your way, pancakes and hash browns. I went with ham, bacon and scrapple for the meats. The scrapple tasted a bit dry (like it was frozen), but the bacon was super fresh and ham was good. You almost can't find a place like this in a location like this. Very original, very bright, very clean and nearly nostalgic. We came for the chicken fried steak - everyone who serves this serves their own version, and so does Bob and Edith's. Theirs is a good variation on the standards, with a much thicker gravy and slightly heavier breading on the steak. However, a good combo, with attentive service to boot. We've eaten here twice within 24 hours. We're staying at the Hilton hotel, which is right next-door. This is the cleanest diner I think I've ever been in. As I speak, there are three employees sweeping and mopping the floor. Even the bathrooms are spic and span. I had a ham and cheese omelette with hashbrowns and toast, which was OK although not the best I've ever had. The cheese seemed like it was velveta or similar. My wife had biscuits and gravy with a side of fruit. The fruit was bananas and blueberries but not super fresh. The biscuits and gravy were not as hot as it could've been nor did we really care for the taste of the gravy. The biscuits were not very thick and seemed pre-made (commercial.) During my second visit here I had a chocolate milkshake that was very good. We also shared a hot turkey and gravy open face meal that came with really good mashed potatoes and gravy and a side of mixed vegetables. The turkey was sliced and then seemed as if it was put on the griddle. It was good. The mixed vegetables had zucchini, carrots, broccoli, but the taste of the vegetables was of overpowered by some sort of a seasoning. The Diner is right near the metro station on King Street and it's a very convenient location if you were staying at either the Hilton or the Wyndham. We visited Bob & Edith's diner on a Sunday at noon. This diner was very busy but our group of 5 (four adults, and one toddler) was able to find a table immediately. Our server, Heather, was absolutely fantastic. She went out of her way drew a "makeshift " coloring page for my granddaughter and then went and got a children's menu. Even for as busy as a restaurant was the food came out quick and was hot. The French toast and blueberry hotcakes were amazing. The country fried steak as well as corn beef hash were also delicious. You can tell their apple sauce it's made in house and it was amazing.
