If you're looking for a bunch of fried food options then you may enjoy this spot. Personally, the chowder was watery and filled with potatoes and the lobster roll was pretty small though it tasted good. They fill you up with all the french fries that fill up your basket. Others have said it well. The food is wonderful. We live an hour away and oftentimes on a whim we'll make the trip because the food is so good. And the artisanal ice cream they now serve rivals the best I have ever had. But what really sets it apart is the cleanliness and freshness of the building and seating areas and, most especially, their staff. When placing your order watch the staff at the stoves. They are animated, smiling, and just generally seem to love what they are doing. Those who take the orders are genuinely happy to see you and greet you as such. And there are people constantly roaming the dining areas, 1) making certain your food is up to expectations; 2) asking if there is anything they can get you; and 3) clearing way trays or trash so you can enjoy that ice cream at a cleared place! What impresses me is that most of the staff are young adults, I'd guess high schoolers or early college students. If they continue to genuinely greet you with a smile and a warm comment, if they continue to work alongside each other selflessly and joyfully, and if they continue to treat others, co-workers and diners alike, with respect, then I am hopeful for the future. read more

We visited Monday night about 6 p.m. and the place was hopping. I ordered a fried whole clam basket based on reviews in the Boston Globe and on Yelp. My sister ordered a lobster stew because she had had it there before. We ate inside at one of the tables before heading home. The staff were all friendly and had smiles--that and the fact that the lobster stew was very good earned the 3 stars. I was very disappointed in the clam basket. They were warm, as were the onion rings (stew was hot), but most were rather rubbery. I was looking for my Tums about 3 this morning and can still feel them sitting there. That adds up to thinking that my basket was very overpriced at ~$25 for clams (overcooked or poor quality?), a small container of coleslaw, and onion rings (includes a $1.95 surcharge for rings in place of fries) and tax. The better purchase and experience was up the road at When Pigs Fly bakery. read more

The food at Bob's was very good; I've got no complaints there. My group got an order of clam fritters, crab cakes, and calamari. I'd have to say that the crab cakes were probably the best out of the three, but that's probably just because I like crab cakes :) However, it was rather expensive for what it was. I would have like to try the lobster rolls or something, but I didn't really want to spend the money. If you're willing to splurge, it's a good place to visit. read more

I've made a few bad decisions in life and eating at Bob's Clam Shack in Kittery Maine was one of them. I'm from northern New Jersey and planned my family's trip to Boothbay Harbor, Maine on August 29, 2012 for a wedding via Kittery, Maine because I had watched Guy Fieri's Diner's Drive-ins and Dives segment on Bob's Clam Shack and wanted to stop there for lunch before heading to Boothbay. I guess I would consider this place under the category of "Dive", it was pretty bad as far as my family was concerned. My wife and I were looking forward to eating the fried whole belly clams which we've had before in Connecticut and other places in Bar Harbor, Maine. This is not the place to go for that. They weren't the least bit crispy or tasty and almost looked as though they were clam strips cause they were so small. My wife ordered the Whole Clam basket and I got the medium Whole Clam side order which was definitely the wrong choice at $27.95, while my daughter ordered the Calamari basket. Nothing was crispy or crunchy at all. Sorry, there was one thing that was crunchy, it was the Oyster crackers before putting them into the medium Clam Chowder and medium Lobster Stew that we also ordered. Again it was the wrong thing to get, both were terrible especially the Lobster Stew which tasted like the Lobster had been cooked to death and sitting there for a while. My daughter loves Clam Chowder and said this was the worst she's ever had (she said canned chowder tasted better). She always finishes her chowder wherever she orders it but this time left about 90% of it. The same was true for my wife's Lobster stew. We ordered everything that Guy Fieri had on his program. I guess they must have made his order special for TV or his taste buds weren't working that day. I guess the only real food critic can only be yourself, you can't rely on internet reviews and you certainly can't rely on what you see and hear on TV. This place really sucked to put it mildly, and now regret wasting our time going there. And did I tell you that this experience cost me around $90.00, that's without any drinks (we had our own in a cooler) or tip (wasn't required). Absolutely not a place for any budget minded family looking for good food at a reasonable price. I should have drove directly to Boothbay Harbor where you can get pretty much the same selections only a whole lot better, and definitely a whole lot cheaper. I found a place called Kaler's in Boothbay Harbor where we had dinner, which we thought was excellent. We had a twin 1 lb. lobster dinner, an enormous Fisherman's platter that was fried to perfection (came with whole belly clams, haddock, Maine shrimp, calamari and scallops), 1 1/2 lbs. of Native steamed clams, onion rings, Buffalo chicken dinner, a bowl of New England clam chowder and sodas, all at a cost of only $78.00 including tip. We went back the next day for lunch with 6 other people and they all loved it, we all pretty much ordered the same things again with the addition of 2 Lobster rolls which were overflowing with tender morsels of lobster and mayo on a lettuce leaf on a toasted roll, and it was excellent again. If not for Guy Fieri's review, I could have had lunch at Kaler's that day also instead of the over priced terrible meal at Bob's Clam Hut. And don't let the crowd at Bob's fool you, most people who were there probably got suckered into going because of Guy Fieri's review on this "Dive" of a joint. If you have the time, go to Kaler's in Boothbay Harbor, Maine which is about 2 hours northeast of Bob's Clam Hut. I guarantee you won't regret the trip. The cost savings will probably even pay for your fuel cost. If Kaler's was closer to northern New Jersey, I'd probably be there weekly, this place is great. Bobs has had it's ups and downs but over the past year it has gotten much better and back to its old ways. Excellent seafood and friends staff. As the other reviews posted previously state, it is pricey but is worth it if your driving hours to get their like my family. Bobs will always be called "Teddy's" in my family (long story) but it should always be on your list of places to stop while in southern Maine. read more

A seriously wonderful place. Perfect stop off heading from Boston north. Excellent staff. Free ice cream on our last visit 'just because.' Clams are the best. The kids meals are superb. Worst lobster roll of my life. The meat did not even fill the small hot dog roll it was on. Only about 3/4 of the roll had meat in it and did not overflow like most do. To spend $15 on a roll like this is absurd. The meat was not good either. It did not seem fresh, very hard. I agree with another rating that this business is able to do well because of its location and past reputation. This is now a tourist trap. Being from new england and knowing what a lobster roll should be, this business fails and is taking advantage of people. If you're going to charge people $15 for a lobster roll, fill it with meat! Been going to Bob's, on my trips from Western Mass. to Hartland, ME, for at least 20 years. Their seafood is beyond compare and the best you can buy anywhere! Their wait staff also fit that description. Will miss Lillian! Keep up the great work. read more

While on vacation, we stopped in after hearing lots of locals recommend Bobs. We liked our dinners and it was a fun experience. The food is not exceptionally delicious but it's fun to try restaurants. It's very family friendly and overall a good experience. We will definitely come back. read more

Went this past Sunday for the first time with my wife although we live in Portsmouth and have been by this place many times. We ordered the clam chowder, lobster stew and clam/scallop dinner for 2. The ordering and pickup process can only be described as clumsy with large crowds milling about the order/pickup window. The clam chowder was mediocre at best and watery while the lobster stew had plenty of lobster meat but very little flavor. The fried clams and scallops while plentiful were pretty standard fare for the Seacoast and the scallops were spongy. Lots of little stringy pieces of fried clams were mixed in. Overall, we were very disappointed given the hype that Bob's gets and believe there are better choices on the Seacoast and in Southern Maine for quality fried seafood including its sister restaurant, Roberts Maine Grill which is across the street on Route 1. read more

In a word, "Tourist Trap." Okay that's two words but you know what I'm getting at. My dad would stop by Bob's on the way to or back from our cottage at York Beach every summer back in the 70's. It was just a small shack back then, no dining room, we ate in our station wagon. He would get a seafood platter for himself to share with my mother and my best friend Tommy and I would share one in the back seat, that's how much they'd give you. The prices back then were not the same now of course, but they're waaaaaaay overpriced for the amount of food you get now. The original owners sold the business back in the mid eighties. Back then the owners would know us by name and sometimes give us free fritters that they were experimenting with at times. You'd be lucky to satiate your appetite with the stingy portions they give you today, and you feel like you're part of a cattle drive on busy days. Mind you, the food is good, no complaints there for the most part. But if you don't remember to stop by your bank and drain half your account to pay for your family's meal when you stop there, you'll be going hungry. $34.00 for a freaking seafood basket, and $22.00 for a "jumbo" lobster roll?! You know what the difference is between a regular and a jumbo is? One is on a hot dog roll, the other is on a submarine roll with an extra lobster knuckle in it or an extra claw piece. There's also a girl going around with food coupons to the picnic tables to ask you; "How is everything"?! They must know that at least half the customers will complain, and for that you get a free baby shrimp cocktail or small clam chowder that's mostly cubed potatoes. Whoopie! Save your vacation money and go down the road about half a mile to, "3 Buoys Seafood Shanty & Grille." It's a little hole in the wall, nothing fancy, but it's cheaper, the fish is just as good, big portions, the locals eat there, and you won't feel like you're being robbed at gunpoint when you get your bill. read more

We stopped in for a light lunch. We had a whole clam basket hot dog and fishwich. It was $42 effen bucks!!! The fishwich was $9.99, the hot dog $2.95 and the clams $20. I said yes to the lettuce and tomatoe on the fishwich and best I can tell, that upgrades it to a deluxe that they charge nearly double for ... Fries not included. The food wasn't great, it was ok. Actually the clams were ok. The fishwich was really greasy and made me lightly queasy. The hot dog we gave to our dog who vomited his dinner that night and has had diarrhea for the last 24 hours. Really glad the kids weren't with us! All I can say is let the buyer beware! read more

First time! Traditional whole clam basket was great! Sweet, cooked perfectly, perfect portion of seafood to fries and cole slaw. Probably as good as Tia's on the Wharf in Boston used to be. Extensive seafood menu made it challenging to choose from. We had heard about Bob's from family and then saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. So glad we were in the area to stop by. Have been coming to Bob's for over 30 years. This is by far the best fried fish (and onion rings) I have ever had - and I've eaten a lot. The crumb coating is not too heavy. The flavors are always clean. Some items on the menu are a little pricey (e.g. Scallops), but the quality is worth it. Bob's is always a destination on the way in and out of Maine. We've been stopping here for years! Never a disappointment. Halibut is always flaky, fresh and lightly breaded... clam strips melt in your mouth... We miss Lillian though! My go-to place for lobster rolls. Usually very crowded and not much room to sit, even at 1-2pm. Go after 2 or right when it opens to beat the crowd. Consistently has great rolls, fries are good but nothing to rave about. If passing through, you should definitely stop! read more

We've eaten here twice between 12/15 & 4/16. The food was great. Properly cooked. The fried clam strips weren't drenched in oil. The staff was friendly. Seating can be an interesting challenge and, if you're trying to sit inside, be sure to have someone "guarding" the table once you lay claim so no one else comes to nab it! The food is decent. My complaint is that they leave the skin on the fried haddock. It has happened to me three times now. I order haddock pretty much every time I eat out and no where else have I ever had this happen. I don't like to skin my fish with a plastic fork after it has been fried. read more

A great little seafood restaurant that is a favorite of the locals for a reason. The food is better than the weathervane and you get it much quicker! I went to Bob's Clam Hut with my spouse. My spouse is a seafood fan, and I am not. Her fried clams and scallops were excellent. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken was a sad gristly piece of flattened meat, and I have had better fries that I bought frozen at the supermarket. The atmosphere was like a cafeteria and the bathroom was filthy. Tables are placed very close to trash receptacles, where people toss their trash after eating, so be careful not to sit too close to one of the trash receptacles, or expect a line of people waiting to dispose of there plastic trays and food remains, while holding their trays over your table. read more

The service is friendly and extremely helpful when ordering your meal, and the whole place is clean and neat. There are plenty of tables inside and out to eat. Having spent all of my summers in Maine as a kid as well as visiting every year for at least 2 weeks, I can say that I have experienced better clams at other Maine establishments than Bob's Clam Hut. The clams were over fried and there were no tender bellies in the order. They are over priced, and the wait was quite long. For unsuspecting tourist entering the state of Maine this is probably the first place they notice (Kittery Maine ). Save your time and money and frequent other establishments in Maine where you will truly experience a good fried clam treat. In fact I have experienced better clams in Arizona than what is offered at Bob's Clam Hut. read more
