Me and a friend came for dinner on Thursday night. The restaurant was bustling but we had our choice of seating, so we went with a spot on their cute back patio (which was amply supplied with heaters.) We each had the Nuestra Paloma cocktail, and shared the Fried Cauliflower, Mexican Ceaser, and Mexican Ceviche. She got the Argentino Burger and I had the Strip Steak. Each item was unique, flavorful, and delicious. Unfortunately the food disappeared before we thought to take pictures ;) For dessert we had the mixed berry masa shortcake, and a single scoop of strawberry guava frozen yogurt. The masa cake was warm and savory, and added a nice bit of texture to balance out the subtle sweetness of the honeydew whipped cream and fresh fruit. Bocanova is a hidden gem in the middle of downtown Oakland. The food is incredibly fresh and flavorful. I went to Peru last year and the pisco sour and ceviche verde were as good as Lima. Alex was the bartender who was super friendly and made excellent drinks. The happy hour drinks are a great deal and all taste great without being too sweet. He was very friendly and easy to communicate with, making the process seamless and pleasant! On the day of the reservation, my colleagues were able to get seated before I arrived. We had a great table in the patio on a Sunny and warm winter day. The restaurant is big enough for multiple large groups as well! Such a stunning space. The staff were quick in firing the appetizers and entrees. They were patient in matching 16 dishes with 16 people who forgot what they ordered. The drinks and food for beautifully presented and just as delicious as they looked. Everything came out at the perfect temperature too. We did not wait long and were even done dining before our 1 hour lunch period was up. We did not feel rushed, the music was relaxing yet energizing, and the staff were helpful and friendly. We sat outside on the patio the food was delicious, ceviche tostadas and crab deviled eggs were a standout. The reason I gave this place 5 stars though, is the service. I came to Bocanova with my family for a late lunch/early dinner. We were the only customers here when we arrived, but it took awhile for someone to come seat us. After being seated, it took awhile to get menus and water, and then it took even longer to get our orders taken. We also ordered the Beef Empanadas, Brandt Ranch Ribeye Filet, Chicken Breast Cobb Salad, Crispy Fried Cauliflower, Oysters, Peruvian Beef Stir Fry, and Polenta Fries. After ordering, the waiter came back later on to tell us they did not have the oysters, which was disappointing to find out after ordering. As we got the rest of our food and started to eat, we realized halfway through our meal that we did not receive our fried cauliflower, so we ended up canceling that order. BOCANOVA!!!! I saw this place on a show called Check Please. That show presented 4 people who visited the restaurant and gave raving reviews of the place. When I came to try it, they were closed. I waited about 7 years for them to reopen and WOW was I impressed. We were greeted a little after we entered the restaurant by the manager who seated us. He was very warm and humorous. Haley was our waitress and she was amazing, attentive and knowledgeable or the menu. We ordered the Dungeness Crab Deviled eggs. They were super delicious. Needed a little salt but overall a 7/10. Mexican Seafood ceviche was 20/10. Empanadas 15/10. They were honestly like a moldy flaky tamale. They were super good. The Ambiance was just amazing. I came to Bocanova with my sister last night and I can't believe I haven't been here before. From the hostess to the bartender and our waitress Dulce were made to feel like we were regulars, the food was out of this world and full of flavor, we had the Lomo Saltado (probably the best one I've had, definitely better than Limon) , patatas bravas, poblano cornbread, Dungeness crab deviled eggs and finished with the Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding. We're definitely coming back and bringing friends and family to this gem in downtown Oakland. If you're looking for a beautiful restaurant with probably the best patio in Oakland with great views, excellent food and cocktails this is the place to go. We have been to the new one several times. The food is as spectacular as ever, and our Australian visitors were delighted (as were my wife and I). I asked a dear friend to join me for dinner and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The ambience is very chic with plenty of space for large parties. There is indoor and outdoor seating. We preferred the indoors. It was quite chilly for a summers evening. They do have heat lamps though. We started off with drinks. Then we ordered the Dungeness crab devil eggs and the beef empanadas. For my entree I had the.vegetarian mushroom gumbo with rice and my friend enjoyed her Moqueca. My dish was delicious. It had enough spices that wasn't overwhelming. It really hit the spot. I tried my friend's dish and it was quite tasty. The broth was creamy with a tasty coconut flavor and the seafood with not over cooked. The service was okay. We recently had a wonderful dinner at Bocanova in celebration of a big Anniversary. What a lovely place with wall to ceiling windows, the restaurant overlooks a lush green sculpture garden in the midst of downtown Oakland. The food was equally stunning with a cuisine that we had never before tasted, Panamericana. All of the courses were memorable, my favorite being the lightly fried seafood, a blend of fish, calamari, and scallops. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the delicious ceviche, nor the sliced steak in a light cream sauce, studded with tender bits of lobster. To top it all off, we had cherry galettes, and the pastry chef came out to ask us if we wanted it ala mode. Who am I to say no to ice cream? Excellent service made the meal even more enjoyable. My friend tok me to lunch here for my birthday and we had such a good time.The vibe is relaxed elegance, with really friendly and welcoming service and a lovely patio to dine on this warm day. We started with the vegetable fritters described as "Nikkei style" and it indeed was reminiscent of tempura flavors,but with a variety of vegetables. It was beautiful and delicious, with a nice dipping sauce spiked with wasabi. The seared ahi was also very good, albeit cooked more than I liked (not dry, just not rare) and the sauce reminded me of snapper a la veracruzana. The only dish that was just OK was the cilantro chicken salad, a little bland. (Both the last two dishes needed salt, IMO.) I took the salad leftovers home and added some smoked paprika, which worked for me. Desserts were a high point. We had some yummy Mexican chocolate ice cream and an amazing butterscotch pudding with toasted hazelnuts called suspiro de limena (there is a tilde over the N), or "sigh of a woman from Lima." We have jist celebrated our Golden Wedding and chose Bocanova as the venue to host a lunch for a few close friends. Martin and Oscar and the staff went far beyond our expectations to make a simple lunch gathering into an elegant and memorable occasion, which was also full of fun. Martin accommodated surprise greeting from my friends in Scotland and prepared printouts at each place setting. The pastry chef prepared a cake that my friends requested. A group of friends and myself were getting off the 12th street bart station starving and looking for somewhere to grab dinner. We crossed the street and stumbled upon Bocanova. As some of our friends are Peruvian they were interested in trying it and let me tell you the didn't disappoint. The aesthetic was very nice and modern with smiles at the door and once we were seated we were greeted by our server Nicole who gave us great recommendations. We started off with some of the BEST ceviche I've had in the bay area! Paired with some super flavorful clams and our first round of drinks it was heaven on earth. My friend who is from Peru said the Lomo Saltado was the "best he's had since he's been in the US (27years) and definitely the best in Oakland". Personally I took a recommendation from Nicole and she recommended the chicken Peruvian chicken a la brassa which had unexpectedly great flavor and I got a side of chicken liver which was out of this world! I topped off dinner with some tres leches cake which looked like it came from a magazine ! It was as good tasting as it was appealing!
