STRIPPED NAKED!! On the road again, me and The Crew hit the road again. If you've ever driven to the Mammoth area, you know it's a loooooooon arse drive up the 395. Lee Vining is a quaint little town, kind of the last of civilization for a good long while. Heading to our last backpacking trip of the season, carpool buddy/fellow hiker and I decided to make Bodie Mike's our last supper. It didn't hurt that it was a rib joint, and we both love the taste of a nice rack, rack of ribs, that is. Located on the main drag, y'all can't really miss it. It is amongst a cluster of little shops, eateries, and pubs there is both inside and outside seating, see hostess to be seated. The interior décor is, well, rather dated, but it's cool, just here to decorate our insides with some hearty grub, before hitting the trail where our grub will be consumed more to keep our strength up than for yummy good flavor. Our hostess had the mostest friendly and personable attitude, quick to seat us, hand us menus, and serve up glasses of water. Out of courtesy, fellow hiker and I skimmed the menu, truth be told, we knew what we wanted before even stepping into this establishment. BABY BACK, BABY BACK, BABY BACK RIBS!!! Half rack comes with steak fries, mini-me cobbed corn, and an open salad bar, with homemade soup available. It didn't take long for our racks to be stacked on our table, equally, it didn't take long for fellow hiker and me to start moaning for more. Good grief!! What the heck is in this sauce?! I've never tasted anything like it. Well, apparently, it is a chef's secret, not even the staff knows what's in it. Hmm... Perhaps, it best we don't know. The sauce was amazingly delish, and the meat...After cutting between the rib bones, I attempted to pick up the rib, all hearty and juicy with steamy hot meat on it, opened my mouth, wrapped my lips around it and in one smooth slide, all of the meat came off the bone. No need to tug, no need to nitpick at the little pieces of meat left on the bone. Slurp! Left the bone dry. Corn on the cob was hot, fresh, totally squirtable, and actually tasted like corn. I wouldn't doubt they grown this stuff out back. Yeah, I moaned for more corn. As much as I love fried, steak fries or thick cut fries are typically not my fave, I don't know, perhaps whatever secret ingredient is in the rib sauce makes the taste buds so happy everything tastes superdeeduper amazing. Yes, even the fries were off the hook. OFF THE RIB! How many bites does it take to get to the bone of Bodie Mike's ribs?! ONE!!! This place is on the beaten path, their food was off the rib, I mean, hook. Parking was a breeze, service was excellent. I'd like to start with a positive: we did not have to wait long to be seated. The shortribs were very tender! However, I think we have never in 27 years had a worse steak or bbq. The new york steak my girlfriend ordered was tasteless and over-done. She ordered a medium rare steak but got something close to well-done. The bbq combination I ordered was bland, cold and also a bit flavorless. On top of that, service was very rude. When we received our entrees we immediately got it accompanied with the bill. Our waitor did not even come to check up on us for the remainder of the meal. As we left we notified the waitress we were not content with the food(something I usually wouldnt even do) which she ignored and just let us know that she has added a 15% tip herself. BBQ Pork sandwich $7.95-my order. I didn't want fries, so I picked coleslaw & macaroni salad. Macaroni salad is not very good. Coleslaw is nicely pickled & kinda crispy. I liked the coleslaw better. BBQ Pork was ok, too sweet for me w/ the bbq sauce they use. A. got "Strike it Rich" I think it was the 1/4 lb burger for $7.95-he enjoyed it. Piled with mushroom, Swiss cheese, bacon, & bbq sauce. Comes with steak fries on the side. Hubby got: BBQ Half Chicken dinner (that's served All Day)! $15.95 - you get soup/salad bar, hot rolls w/ butter, beans, & steak fries. He enjoyed the soup (beef barley soup) & salad bar (make your own), rolls were ok. Beans not very good. Steak fries he liked. His chicken was good, not dry. Bathrooms in the back in the saloon area. After two days of failed campsite meals and living off peanut butter and jelly, we stopped off at Bodie Mike's, so be alert that this is reviewed from the perspective of hungry, dirty people. Onion rings were decent, though the crust was a little hard. I had the 1/2 pound burger with sauteed mushrooms and bacon. Really solid burger, though the bacon could have been not so carbonized. Came with an okay-side of cole slaw and a big heap of thick cut fries (that were tasty even cold the next morning). Tried a $3 mug of the local amber ale (Mammoth Brewing?) and it really hit the spot after a day o' hiking. There isn't much here. So its a damned if you do and damned if you don't for food. Service was SLOW and disorganized. We were the first group to be seated, then we were last to be served. The food came out cold and luke warm at best. The food was brought out stacked on top of each other so plates were smashing in other plates. Indifferent. The staff didn't seem to care that they brought out sub par food. The manager was lost as to what to do, he just said, "well sorry?" We stopped here on the way back from Bodie State Park and we were starving. They have a great patio that is on the street so you can people watch. They were very nice and allowed us to bring our dog to sit with us. They even brought him a puppy bowl of water. We ordered a pitcher of Mammoth Brewery Beer and it was so cold and good. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the BF got the Tri-Tip sandwich. Both were excellent and we would definitely go back for more. We also ordered the chili cheese fries to share. I have been on a mission for really good chili cheese fries and again I was let down. The fries were good ( steak fries) but the chili was just not good. OVERALL: Slightly overpriced BBQ joint with below average quality BBQ. Great porch, awful flies (Sept 15), standard "American bar" atmosphere. OK service. FOOD: When asked pork or tri-tip sandwich, the tri-tip (~$10) was recommended. It was not good, fatty and without much taste. The steak fries were under-seasoned. The 'side salad' was an option instead of cole slaw, and lettuce ACTUALLY came stuffed into a cole slaw container. It made me laugh, but I really did want to eat a large portion of salad/greens after hiking Grand Canyon of Tuolomne for the last 80 hours.The salad bar looked like mostly iceberg lettuce with some 'pizza hut' level of quality ingredients - so I didn't want that. The combo plate was reported as 'good', but I think my friend was simply hungry. The BBQ sauce was some of the worst I've ever had - it tasted like sweet ketchup - very tomato'y, with no acidic bite. SERVICE: We were greeted within 5 minutes. The server was friendly, and the food came out within 10 minutes. The sandwich was lacking in flavor, and I asked for a side of BBQ (hoping to save the damn thing from a life of mediocrity.) It took another ~8min for this to arrive. The check was presented when asked, and we went to the counter to pay. ATMOSPHERE: The patio was nicely laid out as you enter the restaurant along the highway. There was a view of Lake Mono, with ~10 tables. There was at least one fly on me at all times, and often two or three, and I couldn't wait to get out of there. After a long day we were hungry for good food to eat while we watched the sun set by the lake. After surviving the pedestrian crossing 395 from our motel we arrived at the restaurant to warm greetings from the bussing staff. Thats where the friendliness ended. What appeared to the head waitress was outright rude and cold when she took our to go order and rang up our tab. She even abruptly ended the transaction and proceeded to ignore us as if we didn't exist. When our order was ready a different waitress practically threw our food at us and turned and left, not even giving us the opportunity to ask a question. Not sure if they are racist or just really rude. They did seem to be way nicer to other couples, though. Funny how the bussing staff went out of their way to see that we were taken care of but the older waitresses that we conducted business with were totally different. We stopped at this place because, i basically kidnapped my family at drove them down the 395, they were starving. The service was good and the staff was very friendly, but the food average at best. My burger was good, not great, not bad but it was good. The chili was rough, they should've just brought a can of stag chili. My wife ordered the pulled pork, which if you're a BBQ fan will be a disappointment for sure. My kids ordered chicken strips and chicken nuggets with tater tots and French fries, which if you ever bought a bag of any of those from the freezer section is exactly what you remember them tasting like. If this place was in any other location I would've give it two stars, but choices were slim in Lee Vining, so three stars it is, plus the bar looked like a great place to grab a drink after a day on the lake, and they have a pool table! read more

We stopped for lunch a couple of days ago, everything was spot on! Service was fast, and friendly. I had the Tri-Tip, honey had a burger with everything, both were delicious! The Tri-tip had perfectly jammy roasted onions and the BBQ sauce was flavorful without overwhelming the taste of the meat. At $10.95 per sandwich I thought the price was more than fair, the other posters criticizing the pricing must not get out much! There's nothing... wrong with Bodie Mike's per se, it's just that when you're in the mountains and there's nothing but chaparral for hundreds of miles and "towns" you can miss in a literal blink of an eye you end up with the one place to eat and Bodie Mike's seems to be the one for Lee Vinings. The food is average at best. It's edible. The prices are "normal". Service was ok, seems like there was a chef and a front of house serving some 20 people. To be honest I'd rather drive out the 1.5 hours to the nearest town and spend money there, but this is a local business that seems to be doing great with locals and tourists alike. Just know that this isn't even in same stratosphere as bbq from Texas, so really lower your expectations. read more

This city "Lee Vining" is the town when you proceed east from Yosemite (Hwy 120), which is pretty much open for 3 months outta the year. Basically hwy 120 and hwy 395 (which is also where Camp Manzanar is located), is the primary location of the city of Lee Vining and Beautiful Mono Lake. NOW TO THE RESTAURANT... The service was excellent. Beyond good since they appeared over staffed for adequate service. On top of that, I was expecting KKK (WHITE POWER) folks, but, these white folks were chill although we got the "never seen chink eyes" stares. I got the BBQ sandwich since it says "famous." What the hell could be so famous from a town with population 57??? The sandwich was good, the mac salad was unique, and the fries were crunchy. I must say the soda was well carbonated as well. Believe me ya'll, from someone who has digestive issues, soda is muy importante. My 280 lbs gook buddy got the sirloin and i must say, it was a simple recipe of what appeared to be lime and salt. I had a really awful hamburger here, which just should not happen. It's not hard to make a good hamburger, and if you are willing to serve customers one that's not even mediocre, one that's truly bad, then it means that the people working in the kitchen just don't care. They go to work, they clock their time, and they go home. Imagine going to work and actually putting some passion and energy into what you do for a stretch of your day. Nope. Visiting Lee Vining for the first time with my dad and sister and we stumbled across this place as it's close to our hotel. Immediately skipping the possibility of sitting outdoors because it's hot outside we were brought inside to a very cozy, western themed eat-area and proceeded to order ice teas that were delicious. Sister says the pulled pork burger was fantastic and my dad absolutely loved the salad/soup bar buffet. Especially the soups. We will likely stop by again on our way back home later this week. As with all 'less than 3 star' reviews, we expected better and believe better is achievable here. I suppose in this small 395 town on the east side of the sierra where there aren't a lot of food options, a bar-b-q place can flash an eye catching location and call itself barbecue. It's technically not an untrue advert. It's also, technically, not that good. Unfortunate for this good location in this heavy travelled area. There is outdoor seating in the front. This is a good thing. In full disclosure, we did not eat everything on the menu. We did, however, experience the service and had a few items from the menu and inspected the salad bar. The salad bar: all 5 of us chose to skip it. I'm not picky (a practitioner of the 5 second rule, at home) but there was nothing appealing about the salad bar. The tri-tip sandwich squeaks by with just an "ok" and half left behind. The fish sandwich ridiculous (very small dark brown fried fish, one on each side of the bun cut - had to dump the coleslaw on the sandwich to make it a sandwich). The burgers and ribs reportedly overcooked. The service wasn't bad but not good, either. It's unlike me to not check the detail of the final meal ticket but the later 'math in my head' exercise left me wondering if the automatic tip comment in at least one other review is true. If here again, I will definitely have another beer and some fries. I wonder why the salad bar was so off during my visit ... others report an opposite experience. read more

Rolled into Lee Vining after a busy Sunday of driving and exploring. We were thinking that we would stay overnight in town but this was the one night of the whole massive trip that we didn't really plan ahead thinking it wouldn't be hard to get a room in a tiny poedunk on a Sunday night. Wrong! We quickly discovered that we would have to continue on to June Lake so we were anxious just to eat and get on the road. Didn't have any phone internet to screen the dining options and Bodie Mike's looked OK. Plus, we had just spent the whole afternoon in Bodie so it seemed fitting. We sat on the patio which was nice - it was a perfect evening for that. It really just felt good to sit down and relax. The food was pretty good - everyone including the little ones seemed to be happy. It's a little hard looking back almost a year after our trip but my husband probably had tri-tip because he always orders tri-tip and loves it at every BBQ place he goes to. I probably had pulled pork. It's hard to go wrong with pulled pork. And I think we had some kind of communal dessert. What I do remember was the waitress being a little slow but still leaving happy and satisfied. I have to remind myself that in small towns life moves at a slower pace. read more

Tourist trap alert! Tips included for a party of three? Really? I'm a pretty good tipper - my standard is 20% of the pre-tax bill if the waitress simply does her job. More if she is especially helpful or attentive. So in most cases when I see a "tips included" policy on the menu, I think to myself "your loss," and move on. But this place really ticked me off not because they added tips for bad food and bad service, but because such policy was not stated on their menu. I'm curious if they add tips to everybody's checks? If so, they are swindlers for not stating the tipping policy on the menu. If, on the other hand, we were the only ones for whom the tips were included, they are racists. Bodie Mikes is one of a very few restaurants in lee vining, in a very touristy Yosemite and near the picturesque mono lake, and they take full advantage of tourists! $25 for a rack of ribs that was boiled, drenched in a smoke-flavored super-sweet sauce, and slammed in the grill for a few minutes??? Skip this place, and go to the one next to the gas station - they have far better service and food, and won't try to swindle you. read more
