Mono Basin Cafe was such a pleasant surprise during our stop near Mono Lake. The café sits on top of a little hill right near the lodge area, and it has a really cozy, relaxed atmosphere that immediately makes you want to slow down and stay awhile. We went there both for dinner and breakfast, and one thing became very clear very quickly: the portions here are absolutely gigantic. We learned fast that sharing was the smartest strategy unless we planned to spend the rest of the day recovering from a food coma. The breakfast burrito deserves its own monument. No exaggeration, that thing could probably feed four people comfortably, and somehow it was also excellent. Huge and delicious is a dangerous combination. The night before, we had enchiladas that were also very good and satisfying after a long day of driving and exploring. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the whole place had an easygoing mountain-town charm. They also serve wine and beer, which made dinner even more enjoyable. One of the best parts of the café is the outdoor garden seating area. It is really lovely, peaceful, and has partial views toward Mono Lake, which makes the experience feel even more special. Hate to leave a poor review for a place that does have decent food and a nice country feel to it that matches the location nicely. The issue is simply price. I get it they are attracting tourist traffic in and out of Yosemite, and are charging a premium based on that. But seriously, you can't just assume people will pay $22 for a basic sandwich and $25 for a salad with some chicken. Add in a soda and a lunch for two is close the $55 pre-tax / tip. While we waited for our food we had to listen to constant gossip from the kitchen with most of it coming from one loud young woman. We had to wait a long time for our sandwich. The tri-tip sandwich was only slightly warm and the fries were cold. Since we had already waited so long and were tired of the gossip we quickly ate and left. The FEMALE MANAGER was absolutely obnoxious - rude, argumentative, totally unprofessional. We arrived and Kris C. was lovely as she took our order at the counter. We ordered a blue cheese burger, a regular burger and Mac n cheese. The total was $73.79 so this is a pricey menu. We paid, gave Kris a nice tip, and said we forgot about the 10% discount for being guests of the motel. We asked for a cup of soup to cover the discount so the manager was called. The manager looked at the order for quite awhile and we explained we had forgotten about the discount. The manager barked at us saying we already asked for extra blue cheese for the burger! If we wanted soup we had to pay for it! We were so surprised by her answer as she was loudly barking at us. I said no problem, how about a cookie? She grabbed the bag of cookies and threw it at us. We were so shocked. Our order was served and it "looked" okay. The beef smelled as it was not fresh. The onion rings were probably heated in dirty oil because it had burnt bits stuck to it. The Mac n cheese had a strange grainy texture. We could not eat the meal. Hoping for something good, we opened the cookie bag to find the cookie so hard and inedible. All three of us have traveled around the world experiencing different cultures and cuisines. We have spent time in many different small towns in the U.S. This experience with the manager was by far the worst ever in our traveling history. THE WORST. We like the town of Lee Vining very much. We were happy after having toured Manzanar National Site, and a great travel day enjoying Owen's Valley and the beautiful mountains. The next morning we had breakfast at "Nicely's Restaurant" and it was wonderful. The people were lovely and the food was very good. We shopped next door and bought some nice jewelry. In the case of Basin Cafe, the majority of the few negative reviews were complaints about price. What do people expect? The quality and quantity far EXCEEDED my expectations!!!! I had the rib dinner--held the sauce. The fresh veggie mix accompanying was fresh and well seasoned. The side of 'potatoes' was not a throw away. They were scalloped--so delicious!!! My husband had a burger---cooked perfectly accompanied by a side salad. We shared the carrot cake for dessert--a generous serving and delicious!!!
