We always love camping here because it's the closest camping state park that is close to home and the beach. It is camping in a parking lot but you get electricity and water hook ups. You must be a self contained camper to stay here. PCH can get noisy with all the cars driving by but after a long day at the beach, you just knock out. The restrooms nearby are cleaned every morning and trash cans are emptied pretty often. So much to do, we always come back whenever we could get a reservation. That can be a challenge because booking is always full in the summer. read more

The young people at first gate were courteous, friendly and welcoming. We let them know this was our first time camping here. They explained how to get to the campground, but omitted some important information. Such as meeting with Camp Host who wasn't as friendly or welcoming because I made a stop, but I was looking out for little kids and pedestrians and not to be talking to anyone. He was pretty angry for not looking up for him. He gave us the bad news that the dump was out of order, and as the main gate fellows, forgot to mention that the showers use tokens and they are sold back at the entrance. Then, being so new at this, I was hesitant and doubtful about parking, but a nice young man helped me. The campground lost stars because of the dump being out of order and PCH traffic noise through the night. We have a small, basic trailer, so is not sound proof. Bring earplugs and close all your windows and vents. Hope you can sleep. The hook up is accesible and easy to use. read more

We called and reserved a little get away, we love to camp in in our tent on the truck bed. When booking the lady on the phone asked how we would be camping and told her on the bed of our truck in a tent to where she confirmed we could. We arrive day of and are told we can't stay here because they only allow rv, guy proceeds to give us a flyer of places we could call to book knowing it's past booking hours. We got charged for cancelling..... waiting on a refund , no help on finding a new place to stay, and barely any remorse for their mistake. read more

Been camping here for 25plus years. You get to know your neighbors very well as this campground is a converted parking lot and you are close to your neighbors. Beach side is great but can be windy at times in the late afternoon. As long as you stay behind the yellow line and in between the white lines and have no running water on the ground, the camp hosts are chill. Very nice camp hosts!!! read more

Great place for a walk. Photography opportunities abound. Not too crowded when we go, so it still feels like being in nature.

Stayed in site 039 Beach front . While the sites are small and only concrete, they do have full hookups and a beautiful view. We had no issues with loud neighbors or the host . We had a 35ft fifth wheel and backed in no prob. We love the little beach store steps away and the live music on weekends. read more

Our friends got so lucky with a last minute booking of a site on lot 45 which has front row seats with access to the home trail. With the live band, and all the things they offer at the store, I could stay here for the whole week. Why not!? The only improvement I would ask them to make is to allow dry camping for all the rest of the parking lots. The designated camp sites are too few and the rest of the lots are underutilized for those that want to stay beyond just a day use. All that land wasted where more campers could use. You wouldn't even need to run any hook ups. Either that or really expand it out. What a waste to not let more visit the beautiful beaches of sunny so cal. But overall experience is you can next complain for a beach side camp site. read more

Whew chillle! Great location horrible drive to gain entrance. This beach is one of the better beaches in Cali. The water was warm and inviting and somewhat bluish. It was a nice experience for me because I don't particularly care for the beach. They were plenty of lifeguards on duty should anything happened. The highlight for me was, it wasn't to much trash or debris all over the place. Which is great because it keeps those rats with wings AWAY! I can't stand BIRDS! Especially one's that don't know their place in the Cycle of life. Anyways, this beach has multiple restrooms with showers that are really only for "campers". But should you need it for any reason. Hey, you do what you have to do! This is State Beach, so you can't bring animals, fire pits, alcohol etc. But if you arrive early enough you can reserve a fire pit for the evening hours. You'll have to arrive as early as 5 am and wait until 6 am to gain entrance. Lastly the parking SUCKS! It's $15 dollars to park but if you aren't where you need to be you'll be wondering aimlessly until a space becomes available. State Beaches are hard to find now a days,Especially ones with fire pits.The early bird catches the worm here at Bolsa Chica state beach.A line started very early in the morning with people seeking the pits for bonfires in the evening.We arrived at 7 :10 am to be the last group to get a pit.We truly lucked out.We were located at the furthest Lifeguard tower all the way to the south.Next to the bathrooms which were cleaned at least once that day by there State Staff. Our location was perfect,Right next to the jetti close to the restrooms.The water this day was absolutely unbelievably warm and clean.Not a lot of seaweed or flys.Very enjoyable!If you time no about it you have about 2 hrs of darkness for a bonfire,So start it early.The one thing that was really unsafe was how all the lights turned off at Closing time.I found this highly unsafe and saw a few accidents because of this last night.I saw a woman bang up her foot because she couldn't see the curb.I get it your closing but it's unnecessary to go completely dark at 10:00.Thats why they got 3 stars. read more

Location, location, location!! Ya gotta love an ocean front view for $65 a night!! And I do recommend the ocean front spots! The campground is a parking lot with water and electric hook ups and a dumpsite in the next parking lot over. But who needs glamor when you have an ocean view!! The amount of room you have in your spot depends on how big your rig is. The beach front spots face the strand which is really busy on weekends (great people watching and bike path access). Right across the strand there are fire pits on the beach, but no wood fires allowed by your RV (propane is okay). There are clean restrooms and showers on both ends of the RV area. My husband says the pay showers were nice and hot and had awesome water pressure. There is a market adjacent that carries RV supplies, groceries, wine, beer, clothing, souvenirs, fire wood, bike rentals and more. There are several eateries nearby but they are only open in the summer. Dog beach and HB pier/Main Street are a short drive or bike ride away (2-4 miles). Negatives...The road noise from PCH is pretty loud. If you are a light sleeper I suggest ear plugs or sleeping aids. Also, the camp host was not friendly and kinda abrasive compared to any other we've ever encountered. It was sad really. Overall we can't wait to come back! The views of the sunset are stunning and it's like having my own little beach front vacation home!! Yay!! NOTE: If you leave and come back and there's a blockade at the entrance with a stop sign and no one minding the gate, you can still come in that way with your vehicle alone. Apparently they leave enough room for a dually truck to fit, just not an RV. We weren't sure how to get in so we went towards the exit and the camp host scolded us for trying to come in that way. My husband didn't think he could fit, but the man insisted he would have. Apparently others have had the same problem yet he never thought to mention this when you check in. Great Chill easy beach to hangout, surf, exercise or camp beach. I grew up going to Bolsa for the soft smooth waves with clean beaches and plenty of parking. The campgrounds are great but need to make reservations six months in advance! They do not have a camping store on site if your camping. Just a few seasonal eateries that are pretty good. The parking is plenty but expensive to park but worth the cost for a great beach. Across the street is the Bolsa reserve for great hiking and bird watching. read more

Horrible experience from The start! Campground host extremely rude! I talked to the husband host he told me I could do one thing then later that afternoon his wife was working the gate she wouldn't honor what her husband told me we could do! She didn't want to hear my situation basically put her hand up in my face! Then the next day my E-bike was stolen in middle of the night and I mentioned to her after I'd already filed a police report and thought maybe it'd be kind when checking new folks in to mention something like take your batteries off your E-bikes at night they're a popular item for theft that's it just a friendly warning! She gave me the dirtiest look like are you even kidding that's not our responsibility!!! Some folks aren't meant to be campground hosts I thought they were there to help You and hope that you're time spent at their location they're hosting is a fun and safe feeling! Never again! We rented an RV from Cruise America and had a blast. As first time RV renters (a family of four with 7 and 10 year old kids), camping at Bolsa Chica was a great way to get our feet wet (literally and figuratively) using an RV. Thoughts/highlights: -Having the water and electric hook ups was really helpful. -Campground shower facilities were hot, spacious and clean (2 tokens/$1, 2 mins/token). Good option if you want to conserve your grey water tank. RV showers are small. -Other campers are so friendly. It's a nice community of people. -Right on beach. There are multiple fire pits to use. -Bring your bikes! We biked to the Huntington Beach Pier (bring a bike lock and chain) and had lunch there. -Didn't interact with the camp host but saw him checking in with people. Seemed nice. -Beach was clean. We really enjoyed our time here and are looking forward to doing this again. read more

I go out camping at least 5 to 6 times a year, both Boondocking and at campsites. Have stayed here not less than 15 to 20 times in the past 10 years. I have stayed on both the highway side and the beach side. Finally decided to write a review. So I live about 5 miles from this campsite and in all honesty I use it more of a staycation a couple of times a year. So this review will be through the lens of a "local" which makes up about half of the people camping at this site. First there is two distinctive type of campsites here. The beach side and the highway side. There is extreme differences in each of them and your experience camping here will vary depending on what side you're on. If you're on the highway side more than likely you will not have any view of the ocean. And the only advantage to camping on the side is that you were still very close to the beach. Outside of that is a lot louder and the experience is not nearly as nice. So here are the pros and cons for both sides. Pros: -You're literally 25 yards from the beach. -The showers and bathrooms are for the most part clean and not terrible. -There are several very good restaurants within driving distance of this campsite. -The General store is open seven days a week and has everything you will need. -Full hook ups And that is about it. Cons: -You are sandwiched in between other campsites. It is basically a double wide parking space for your camper. -it is very very loud. You will need earplugs unless you're the most extreme heavy sleeper. Between the traffic from PCH to other campers being loud do not come camping here for a peaceful quiet experience. -Getting your camper in may be extremely hard. There is only about 15 ft between the hwy side and beach side campsites. If you have a trailer and are not good at backing it up it will be very stressful. -They don't necessarily follow the quiet time rules here. Especially in the summer. And the camp host are not very helpful enforcing it. Expect loud music and/or talking till at least between 11 to midnight. -The sidewalk between Campsite and the beach can get very crowded. And there are several E bikes that speed through there very fast. If you have small kids you'll have to keep an eye on them to make sure that they don't get hit. -Did I mention it is very very loud? -It can get very windy and cold. Especially at night. It doesn't matter the time of the year the wind really hits the spot in the evening. -Can be very hard to book sites here. Most of the time you have to do it six months out and even then you'll still be somewhat lucky. In all honesty I've had more good experiences here than bad. And all my time here only a few times have I camp next to people that were extremely loud and rude. For the most part everyone here is nice. But I have the luxury of being able to go home and sleep if it gets bad. I do that exact thing when I stay on the highway side. It is just too loud. And I use a campsite for morning surf sessions and a place to hang out till after sunset. If you're coming from out of state I honestly would not recommend this campsite. I would go somewhere else. In the summer there will be several "groups" that will book 7 or 8 sites and have a big parties every night. So basically I am torn. Living so close this is a good option for a staycation for me. But again I would not recommend anybody that isn't from Southern California to stay here. It is just not worth the travel time and gas for this spot. read more

I hadn't heard of this place before I booked it. I ended up getting blessed and got two sites. It was the perfect place to camp. Beach on one side and food, shopping pretty close. Friendly staff and the store that was located near there had the friendliest staff as well. If I camped there again I would choose the odd number sites so I could be closer to water read more

This 5 star rating is legit ...we have not camped in about 5 years so this place has changed for the better. We always loved to camp here but now they have a store!! Oh and nice camp hosts !! This park is literally on the beach. That is what you are paying for. The sites are tight and the highway noise is non stop. The rest rooms and showers leave a lot to be desired. It matters because you need to use them if you plan on staying more than a couple of days as there are no sewer hookups. There is a dump station a short distance away but that would require tearing down your site and moving. Not convenient. There is a great biking path right in front and we did enjoy that. The place is OK. The location is excellent. read more

Update: I guess the State folks read my last review and were embarrassed with the patched up fence. They replaced it. Still no protective k-rail though. New addition to the park is a blinding lit up sign at the kiosk entrance. At night these things are so bright it's difficult to see the path by the kiosk. They need to dim them down. The guys with the guns that open up every morning are doing a better job in the last couple weeks. They are actually opening on time and even a couple minutes early. Quite a change from the month prior when it was consistently late, a couple days up to ten minutes late. Update 10/9/18 In the hast two weeks the gate has not been opened on time. Last Friday it was opened 15 minutes late. Lots of cars lined up on the highway waiting to get in. Several other days it has been opened late also. I don't get it! I go to Costco to get gas in the morning. Their hours start at 6:00 am open. Without fail they open at 5:50 and some times 5:45. Ten to fifteen minutes early. Why? Because people are waiting for them to open and they want to keep their customers satisfied. Same should hold true for this park. Seems like they need to have some customer satisfaction training! read more

Reading some of the other reviews, I can't help but laugh. The rules here are simple. Regarding parking, each site is well marked, with lines painted on the asphalt. If you can fit your tow (or towed) vehicle inside the lines, you're good. If not, you need to park your extra vehicle in the adjacent parking lot. If you needed to be told you were in the way, especially if you needed to be told more than once, you clearly have issues following simple instructions, or you just think everything is all about you. Life lesson..., it's not. Regarding the complaints (and low ratings) about traffic noise..., seriously?! You chose a campsite less than a stone's throw from PCH (a multi-lane highway with freeway speeds). Be thankful there's a campground on the beach here in the Huntington Beach area. If you want peace and quiet on the beach, drive several hours north or south. We come here every October. And, we love it here. The campsite is asphalt and concrete, but is literally steps away from the beach. Each site has hookups for electrical (50, 30, and 20 amp) and water. There are two camp hosts, one at each end of the campsite, to make sure the rules are observed. The beach itself is expansive, plenty of room on the sand for everyone. There are downsides to this place, but I suppose they're unavoidable due to space and other limitations. There's only one one-way road down the middle of the campground. During check-in and check-out times, there's often lots of waiting while people jockey their rigs into their spot, and then unhitch trailers. There are no sewer hookups, but there is a nearby sewage dump. For longer stays (or rigs with lots of guests), you'll need to break camp and move your rig to empty your drain tanks. Competition for reservations is fierce during Summer. Reservations are made online (or by phone), and are available seven months in advance; on January 1st, you may book any date through July, on February 1st, August can be booked, and so on. read more

The spot was amazing. The staff guy was rude racist. He lives there and thinks he owns the place. He knew our neighbored and was not rude to them. I checked in and did not have my ticket had to drive back. That was okay but was extremely rude about it. The neighbor left at 12:18 same time as I and he was not rude. I asked if code still worked for shower in front of his friend my neighbor he said I should of had my vehicle out of there as of yesterday. Like I was not welcome and I should of took shower before noon. The neighbor told me she thought he was joking. But I didn't take kindly to it and thought he was utterly rude and disrespectful. I also asked him I see people checking in at noon and he told me 1 pm. He said next time he will call the cops on me. This is a Monday morning and I get doing ur job but when I'm observing him act completely differently with my neighbors and me differently, I can only conclude he is racist and not fond of peoples of color. My neighbors were white so I find it ironic. He was very rude and vindictive and I didn't appreciate being treated like I didn't belong and I'm driving a 200k Sprinter. read more

SUMMER TIME: Easy parking. You can get there by 10 am on a Sunday and still find a pit. Parking is $15 but you can go in and out as much as you want. The sand is rough on your feet though- not sure how often they clean it and restrooms are as as beach restrooms go- bring sanitizing wipes and you'll be fine! Picked up a last minute cancellation I'm guessing, happened to be a 40 foot pad, which worked out great. The place is super tight to maneuver in, the road is very narrow, but we managed without a problem. Be prepared to ask neighbors to jockey vehicles around if it's really tight near your spot, or jockey your own vehicle around to help others out. We definitely had a good time and met many nice people, we brought our dog and she loved all the attention. Unfortunately we had a back row spot which backs up to PCH. PCH has traffic day and night and is very noisy. It would be nice if the state built a sound wall between the campground and PCH. But the trade off was being about a hundred feet from the sand. We were there 4 days, the first two days were nice but it got really windy during the last 2 days. The store next to the campground is awesome, the employees are very friendly, they are very customer service oriented. The store hosted a concert one afternoon in their mini amphitheater, which we had a good time watching. At the store you can also rent bikes, surfboards, boogie boards, and even small fire pits. Overall we had a really good time and would consider returning in the future, I do plan on taking some day trips out there to enjoy the beach near the campground before the end of the summer. read more

I'm not super familiar with what I assume are all these little beaches that make up Huntington State beach. It took a good while to get through the line that corralled the cars in (no drop offs and no refunds once you get in evidently) but once in parking wasn't insanely scarce....there were spots here and there. Not bad for a nice sunny day in the summer. We ended up parking our set up near lifeguard tower 21 and I've got to say it was nice....the beach and facilities were well kept. Lots of large, uniform, evenly spaced garbage cans acted as sentinels - guarding the beach's cleanliness with vigilance. Less crowded than some of the other areas nearby for sure, and with a beach grill if you didn't happen to bring your own snacks. Not bad! read more

The camp spots are very very tight and with tow vehicles crammed into spots with their trailers it is horrible to try to get to your spot. We were so close to the next space that there was no privacy at all. Pacific Coast Hwy is only a few yards away. The shore line is more than twice as far away. Sitting outside our RV we couldn't hear the waves breaking on shore or talk amongst ourselves because of road noise. The street noise is VERY loud and doesn't let up until 1-2:00 AM and starts up again before dawn. This sounded like a great beach escape but NOT. We won't be back. read more

I will not come back here until they have nicer camp hosts. Give some old retired guys some authority and they start having power trips and constantly warn people what they can or cannot do. They're ride their trikes back and forth hollering at the guests like a gestapo. This is not a prison! We're going back to Doheny where people are more welcomed by friendly hosts. read more

We spent two nights here with class a rv and trailer, as we were exhausted and traveling for business. The park ranger that checked us in was nice, but the one the second day was not very helpful and printed the wrong license plate on our receipt. When I asked to have it fixed, she scribbled it out and said "they never check them anyway, so it will be our little secret." ?? Seems ridiculous after paying $55 a night. It is noisy next to CA1, and the beach is sorely in need of some TLC, lots of trash. Think the rangers could get out there and do a little better, especially for it being a government establishment. Electrical hookups and fresh water at your parking site, and a dump station about a block north of parking lot. read more

We've camped in a lot of places along the California coast and this is the worst. I knew before we made the reservations we would be literally next to Pacific Coast Highway so I can't complain about the constant traffic noise. You are right next to the bike trail which is nice and it's a short walk to the ocean so if you want to swim, sunbathe or surf it's OK. All the "sites" are glorified parking stalls that are very close to each so you get no privacy. For the price of $55 no table, or sand to put an umbrella. There are water and electric hook-ups for RVs. If you want a campfire you must use a fire ring on the beach or a designated spot at the front of the parking lot. . . oh, I mean campground. No camp store so if you need ice you must drive 2 miles to a gas station for it. It's located across the street( about 150 feet) from the Bolsa Chica wetlands preserve but there is no cross walk at the light. Really? Are you kidding me ? You have to drive out of the campground and go down PCH across the street from where you are camped or round trip it will be about a 7 mile walk.Why didn't they put a pedestrian crosswalk so campers could cross and enjoy the wetlands ? About 2-3 miles south is the Huntington Beach pier. Again, you have to drive or walk 5-6 miles round trip. It sure would have been nice to be able to walk to Main Street and get an ice cream or something to eat. All in all, it was pretty disappointing. read more

We drove up from San Diego to stay here and were turned away at the gate, being told that our VW Westfalia Vanagon was not allowed. Why? Still not sure. We saw some tiny pop-ups in the area that probably have smaller sleeping areas than the full sized pull out bed in our van! I really enjoyed my week here. Like every where there are draw backs but the beach is in your backyard. Maybe native Californians are more particular but being from Wisconsin it was a great stay. Showers are clean and convenient, they have a dump station near by, the staff was friendly. Yes PCH is close but you don't even hear it after awhile. Would def stay here again. It's basically a parking lot with hookups, but you are steps away from the sand. It is dog friendly, and just about everyone had at least one dog. Because it is next to the highway, no one seems to care about noise too much. You will hear dogs barking on and off. Dogs are not allowed on the sand, but they are allowed on the miles of bike path. If you are used to privacy and large spaces, you won't get it here, and you may not be happy staying here. What you will get is access to miles of an ocean front bike path, and direct access to the sand. If you have trouble backing your RV up, you may want to practice before you get here. read more
