    Dueling Indian.
    Lenza M.

So, during my first two full nights in London I had take-away from two Indian restaurants that are literally right next door to each other and half-a-block from my place. I figure I should make them two of my first reviews, and might as well knock it out in a two-fer review. Here we go. The two places are The Rajadoot, with the prime corner position, weighing in at 3.5 stars on 2 reviews, and Bombay Spice coming in with 4.5 stars on a hefty 4 reviews. In short -- they both serve fine food, but so far I don't see what all the "London has the best Indian food in the world!!!111one!" fuss is about. With a one-full-star lead, and twice the review count, Bombay Spice easily won my business the first night. I was at first put off by the white table clothes, but upon further observation of the city I have determined that there must be a law here that requires all Indian restaurants have white table clothes. Once inside the feeling was relaxed, not pretentious, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. At Bombay Spice I decided to go with the tried and true Butter Chicken. It was obvious that the dish was made with love of quality ingredients, and I especially liked the addition of sliced almonds, but the spicing was too bland for my pallet. It was disappointing because the rice was so fragrant and appealing that I would guess that this place is not afraid to spice things appropriately. This might have been just a poor order, but it was listed on the "chef's suggestions" portion on the menu, so they do not get a pass. The next night I found myself hungry late night at 10:15PM on a Sunday, with just about everything in sight closed. After being rejected from a couple of other places I begrudgingly decided to go for Indian again. Obviously too embarrassed to go to the place I went the night before, I headed for Rajadoot and was happy to see the 3 bored staffers gaze upon me expectantly as I approached the door. It turns out they are open noon to midnight, 7 days a week, including holidays. At first I was going to play it safe again and order the Chicken Tikka Masala. But, after being upsold on an appetizer, I discussed Chicken Tikka Korai (which I had never had) with the waiter. He sold me on it primarily by saying it was "medium spicy". Remembering the rather bland Butter Chicken from the previous night I decided to switch things up I told him to change my order because I liked things very spicy. He replied: "If you like spicy that's a good choice, I things very spicy, but for you, medium spicy." To my disappointment, it turned out that I couldn't even detect the spiciness in the dish. And the appetizer was a bland fried shrimp. But, the flavors in the Korai were actually good, so if I could get it actually spicy maybe this place could earn an extra star. In the end, two more Indian restaurants that confirm my feelings on Indian food: meh -- 3 stars each.

We started with some yummy cocktails and the okra fries which were delicious - if only okra always tasted this good. For mains, we shared the chicken tikka, black daal, paneer and garlic naan. Pretty standard Indian order. The chicken tikka was just too spicy and we weren't used to that so it went mainly eaten. My favorite was the black daal but again, it wasn't so amazing that I would go and have it again. Honestly the best dish we had was dessert - the basmati kheer is a perfect rice pudding with crème brûlée like topping. So good. Service was spotty, I constantly found myself trying to find our server or make eye contact with him. They were slammed on a Tuesday night (which I'm sure is the case every night) so that's probably just the way things are but it could've been better. Disappointed but willing to try again, also made me want to try some other Indian spots in London next.

I feel like all my friends who've been to London have come back talking about this place, and I'm happy to join their ranks. Dishoom was also one of a handful of dining options recommended by my hotel concierge for a party of 11, including kids. Booking was easy, via SevenRooms, no phone calls or emails necessary. It's a large restaurant, and part of a popular chain--I guess they have things figured out. The space was great, open and casual, exposed ceilings and eclectic decor. Lots of fans, which my three-year-old appreciated. Service was friendly and attentive. I started my lunch with a drink, a refreshing green India Gimlet, gin and Rose's lime with celery bitters and fresh dill. I also tried and liked a sip of the New Permit Room Old-Fashioned, a slightly sweet cocktail with coconut-washed bourbon, Pedo Ximénez sherry, and Medjool date liqueur. There was only one menu available for a party of our size, a pre-set family-style group feast for eight adults, to which we added a pre-ordered platter of lamb chops. I loved the variety of dishes that came with this meal, and every one of them was ridiculously delicious. (There was less available for the three small American children, but they loaded up on hotel breakfast and snacked on naan and colorful puffed crackers.) The first round brought trays loaded with keema pau, okra fries, and bhel, along with lime, cilantro, and sauces for serving. The keema pau was incredible, probably my favorite dish of our lunch, if in part because it was 100% new to me. It was a spicy, aromatic blend of minced lamb and peas with dill and lindi pepper, served with toasted, buttered buns to make little sliders. So much flavor, it almost explained, by itself, why the British could never leave India alone. The okra fries were warm and crispy, and I loved the bhel, a crunchy snack of puffed rice, peanuts, and Bombay Mix tossed with pomegranate, tomato, onion, lime, tamarind, and mint. The main course was another giant spread: chicken ruby, house black daal, awadhi jackfruit biryani, and chilled broccoli salad, plus our charred lamb chops, with sides of roti, naan, and raita. The chicken ruby was the highlight here, a fragrant, comforting curry Chicken Ruby Tender chicken in a rich, silky makhani sauce. A good and proper curry redolent with spice and flavour. ~ House Black Daal (V) A Dishoom signature dish - dark, rich, deeply flavoured. It is cooked over 24 hours for extra harmony. ~ Awadhi Jackfruit Biryani (V) Sturdy, savoury jackfruit and delicately flavoured rice, potted, sealed and cooked the traditional way. Adorned with barberries and sultanas. ~ Chilli Broccoli Salad (Ve, V) Toasted pistachios and shredded mint leaves with finest, greenest broccoli, fresh red chillies, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dates and lime. CHARRED LAMB CHOPS 19.90 Two chops of generous proportions lie overnight in raw papaya, yoghurt and humble spices. Blackened on the grill and finished with a thrilling Kashmiri chilli sauce. A speciality of new standing. ~ Roomali Roti (Ve, V) Soft handkerchief-thin bread, thrown, stretched and griddled to order on an upturned tawa. ~ Plain Naan (V) freshly baked in the tandoor ~ Raita (V) Delicate minty yoghurt, cool as a cucumber END WITH YOUR CHOICE OF Mango Kulfi (V) ~ Pistachio Kulfi (V) ~ Malai Kulfi (V) original with caramel

The chilli chicken was also a super flavorful app to share and the garlic naan was great as well.
