Okay, when my cuz said "Let's go to Indian Buffet for lunch" my response was "Yayy!!!!". Then she said "It's vegetarian". I fought my inner carnivore's urge to kick and scream and happily went along. Bombay Sweets definitely didn't disappoint. I know basic Indian food... but not enough to describe in detail what all was on the buffet this day. One thing that did stand out and which was practically a meat dish in and of itself, was mini whole fried egg plants. They were delicately swimming in an ambrosial creamy reddish-orangish sauce and I couldn't stop eating them!! The saag was a little bit spicy (in a good way), and the nan was aplenty. Oh, and they had something that had a grits-like consistency but with almonds and a subtle orange blossom flavor(?)... very nummy. All in all, i'd say there were at least 8-10 main dishes, 2 different rices, Indian fixins, and a few desserts. Super casual. Super saturated with South Asians. And Super affordable. read more

My favorite Indian restaurant in Houston, hands down! I always go for their buffet (which includes naan) that totals at $6.99 per person. It includes several different kinds of curry (they're also distinguished from including garlic and onion or not) including my favorite (the saag paneer), basmati rice, seasoned rice, jalebi, a sweet and yellow concoction (sorry, I don't recall the name) and a small salad bar. I've always wanted to branch out and order from the menu (perhaps a lassi one day?) but I would probably just order the saag paneer... so I might as well just stick with the buffet. In addition to their delicious buffet, I always buy some sweets from their expansive selection to take home, because I'm usually so stuffed to eat anymore afterwards - even dessert. The first time, I got a little of almost everything to try it out. Now, I have my favorites. All I have to do now is learn their names. The atmosphere is rather cozy and everything's pretty much self-serve. You go up to the counter and tell them what you want (I usually tell them how many people are in my party, followed with the word "buffet"). Then we find a seat and start loading our plates. Shortly thereafter, they'll call out "naan" and make eye contact with you to let you know it's YOUR naan. Each person gets their own basket. Stuff yourself and enjoy. It's not the fanciest place, but considering how every time I go there, there are many Indians there as well, so I say the food's authentic too, which is a major plus in my book. :) read more

The buffet has a good variety of entree dishes and accompaniments. They're all very flavorful and yummy. Plus the buffet is an amazing value when it comes to great food. Save room for the amazing sweets which you cannot miss since they're beautifully displayed. They're located at the end of an older strip shopping center. The fact is that this place is not a restaurant but a sweet shop tucked with some extension of tables .Their buffet food is good and the range they maintain is good for the price they quote. We went for a dinner buffet and you get a choice of bread - Naan ,Poori,Roti to choose which is included in the same price. But this rating is not for the buffet. We took some sweets back home and the taste of those sweets are framed here for my rating. I ordered 2 dosas and 2 mango Lassi and watched 3 or 4 other people received the SAME order when they ordered 15 minutes after me. When I went to POLITELY ask where my food was I was shewed away with a hand motion and very abruptly told "Sit down... it's coming" - I eat Indian food all over Houston and understand that they are a very "closed culture" but have always found them to be kind and happy people. There will always be a special place in my heart for Bombay Sweets. It's the first Indian restaurant my parents have really liked since the venerable Bombay Palace in NYC and the first restaurant I visited in Houston. Nostalgia and sentiment aside, this is the best authentic Indian buffet I've visited in the US. The buffet has portions of warm, flaky naan and excellent snacks to start, usually some dahi vada (dumplings in a yogurt sauce with chutneys) and pakoras (vegetables fried in a chick pea flour batter). The chutneys are fresh and flavorful. Most of the dishes are very good. I'm impressed at how well-spiced the Jain dishes (made without onions or garlic) are. This buffet also has a good selection of "comfort food" like saag paneer and yellow dal and the stuff your Indian mom would likely make for you as treats, like paneer makhani, idli sambhar (steamed rice cakes in spiced dal) and lovely thin string beans with potatoes. For dessert they often have jalebis, which are the equivalent of Indian funnel cakes. If you like jalebis, these are the best you'll find in Houston.Try these if you need a week-long sugar fix. I have a special Indian pancreas and tongue shield that allows me to accommodate the ridiculous sweetness of Indian sweets. Seriously, I didn't even realize how sweet they were until non-Indians pointed this out to me. So you've been warned. I'd give this place five stars if I hadn't had so many disappointing snacks off of the snack menu. Skip the pani puri and dhokla. The Bengali sweets like the gulab jamun and rasgulla could have been better as well. While the sweets mentioned in the restaurant's name don't live up to the hype, the $7.99 buffet is worth it. This is a great place to people watch (or be watched by people) and you need to get a seat facing the cash register so you can watch the only mildly entertaining spectacle. On one non-deity hand (only two here), it makes sense that they call your order out over the PA system - you can hear it. On the other, you have no idea if it's your naan or someone else's naan you're picking up. No one queued up a karaoke prompter and sang (or group danced) while I was there, either, so it was a slight letdown. Perhaps facing the "stage"/cash register wasn't such a hot idea on my part. My buffet and naan came to around $7 or $8. Yeah...no, don't bother. Perhaps we should have just ordered a la carte. The good? They had vegetable idli which was pretty tasty, and the coconut chutney was nice. Beyond that, the food wasn't all that good. The curries were a little too creamy, and the vegetables and legumes in the curries weren't that fresh or even that exciting. They were all gloopy, and not in a normal Indian curry sort of way. It all tasted a bit cheap, too. If you want a South Indian buffet, just head to Udipi. If you want the best South Indian food in the area, head to Shri Balaji Bhavan. Based on the other reviews that brought me to Bombay Sweets for the buffet, don't bother with the sweets. I didn't (even though the gulab jamun and burfi were singing their siren songs in unison). I figured the sweets could have easily gone two ways, either they were really, really bad since the people who really liked the mediocre buffet didn't like the sweets. If there is a option on -ve stars, will give 1000-ve stars.. These guys are cheats of highest level. Have purchased Chickpeas fry, Dhokla, kesar rasmalai and rasgolla. 1. All stuff were stale 2. Dhokla was like a solid brick and becomes powder if you try to eat. 3. According to Bombay sweets, if they add milk and yellow colour to rasgolla it will be Kesar Rasmalai. For that they will charge $3 premium. 4. Their Rasgolla is like golf balls, if they can improve their cooking standards we can actually play golf with them. 5. Chickpeas (bengal gram) fry.. Each chickpea I can replace a practice gun shots.i think they didn't even soaked them before frying them ( is water so expensive for you?). Have to throw away everything. To conclude, have wasted $25 for my Indian food cravings, would have got some blessing if have donated them to poor. When I try calling them and complain, they ignore as if they can't hear.. Commonly seen dishes include saag paneer (spinach and homemade cheese), a variety of dal (lentils), and salad. Others have included potatoes and cauliflower, chickpeas in a variety of forms, and red beans in a tasty sauce. Buffet eaters receive hot naan and pappadums, too. From the menu, I've had most of their desserts. some dosa, and a few lassis. I haven't tried the buffet but I would probably stay away from that especially since last time my family went they got upset stomachs from eating the buffet. However, I LOVE their dosas. I love the fact they are so huge and for a reasonable price. For those who don't know what dosas are, they are basically crepes with seasoned potatoes inside. This is my go to place for dosas! However, people who are not used to the environment of Indian and Pakistani restaurants should be aware that this place is pretty dingy and dirty. So if you are someone who is really into sanitation, or at least the appearance of cleanliness, you should probably stay away. I love getting my vegetarian fix here. I've been going for years and have never been disappointed. Even if the steam table had nothing but saag paneer and tamarind sauce and they handed out nothing over the counter but naan, I'd still be a fan. I also like the sodas in the fridge by the door. My go to place for cheap Indian food. This place has been around for years and is still busy. You have to order at the counter, and they announce when your food is ready. They serve vegetarian food and offer a buffet the entire day, which I think is Jain friendly. It's a great place to try chaat aka Indian street food (samosa chaat, dahi puri, pani puri, bhel puri, etc). They sell sweets by the pound or piece. It always gets busy during Diwali, which reminds me of India every time. If you haven't tried Indian sweets yet, this is the place to go. They offer dry, and liquid sweets like ras malai. If you're craving authentic Indian vegetarian cuisine, this is your place. It's almost ALWAYS crowded, so brace yourself for that. I remember not being able to find a seat once and literally waiting for someone to get up so we can sit (since it's self seating). They have a buffet that is so incredibly delicious and always fresh. I want to say I've been here 3 times and the food has always been consistently good. The lunch buffet is only ~$6/person and there are about 8 options to choose from. They vary from day to day but they're always good and you can taste the freshness. Also - the food is always perfectly seasoned. Not too spicy, not too bland. They also have an assortment of Indian sweets, but I'm not a big fan of those so I've never gotten around to trying them. I just really LOVE the food here! The only downside again, is the fact that it can get kind of cramped and hectic. I don't consider that a major issue though since the incredible food makes up for it :) read more

Definitely do not recommend this place at all. I wanted to pick up bhindi masala as usual. They give us an empty plastic container of the size you ordered in which you get to fill up the sabzi of your choice. This day the lady at the counter insisted that she will fill up the container herself from inside. However, when I got home we realized that the lady had filled the container with the unwanted top parts of the bhindi, the ones we throw away before cutting the bhindi. I have been to this restaurant twice-- once in 2005, when the buffet was only $5.00, and last month (Feb 2008). FYI, the buffet is now $7.00, and in my opinion, it is a total rip off. This review is for Feb 2008: The quality of the food was horrendous. I could tell right away that the food was old, as the saag paneer and other curry w/ paneer had so much (orange colored) oil floating on top that I was completely disgusted. Despite my urge to walk out, I tried these two dishes, since we had already paid. I did not eat the paneer pieces, as they were brown and nasty looking. The taste was less than ok, I only ate a small amount, telling myself that it was a good deal for $5.00. (Thats when my husbands dad informed me that it was actually $7.00, and had cost $28.00 for the four of us to eat there). My husband tried the Paneer Pakodas, and the paneer was PINK (yes PINK) on the inside. For those of you who don't know, when paneer turns pink that means it is bad. As in, you can get food poisoning. I am sorry, but this place is not even "a good deal." There are several neighboring restaurants who offer WAY better indian food for about the same price (sometimes less). Still, they make some things phenomenally, i.e. the saag paneer. The lukewarm water is pretty gross. Also, FYI, the price for the buffet is now at about $7, but I do remember when it was cheaper. Also, I've heard bad things about the cleanliness of this place. The one time I used their bathroom, it was foul. Still, I go back a lot because the food is generally so yummy. The place is clean and the folks are mostly friendly. It takes a little bit if the line is long but it is certainly worth the wait. If you can't figure out what to eat, you can always look at the buffet. If you can't decide what to order because everything looks so good? Get everything! Saag Paneer, Baingan Bharta, Naan and a little bhel puri to end the meal on a sweet note. All for $16 and better yet, there's enough food for 3 or 4 meals. THis place does have the cheapest Indian buffet. Like 7 bucks!! And you get a bunch of food for that money!! However, I usually get a bunch of Indian starters (they are all on the display), like samosas, kachoris, etc. They are great! I take them home or take to friends places for get-togethers. We have frequented this place when in the neighborhood. In between errands yesterday, my wife and I decided to have the lunch buffet. The food was mediocre, as expected. The place was crowded and tables were being shared. They were not being cleaned well or fast enough. Plastic ware was provided since they could not rotate the steel stuff fast enough. Food was refilled at the buffet in an unhygienic manner. Same for wiping the area around the trays on the buffet. The tables are set pretty close and walking down the buffet or between the tables requires attention. I could not see myself with my cane serving myself. My wife got me a plate. The toilets are FILTHY. Wet and slippery floors, overflowing trash and disgusting stench. The soap dispenser is right above the urinal. The paper towel dispenser is too close to the sink and I had to reach around carefully to dispense soap. All in all, this place is okay in a crunch. But it can be quite an adventure. read more

Proof that vegetarian buffets can be delicious (thanks Muneezeh K.)! This place is apparently better than Bhojan buffet, but I haven't had a chance to test that yet. For now, I don't mind coming back here! Great place to go if you're looking for great Indian food and fast! Smother your byriani rice with 6 or 7 different sauces, from tomato based to saag paneer! Each buffet comes with a starch you can choose from - I recommend the naan (big, fresh, and hot. just the way I like em!). Saag Paneer is usually my favorite, but I think I like the other sauces better here since the Paneer was a little too salty/thick for me. Cheese curds were delish though! Mango Lassi's are fresh with homemade yogurt, although Muneezeh K. (where I get my Indian cred for this review) says it's made with puree instead of real mangos. I love this place. I literally get cravings for Bombay Sweets! The buffet here is vegetarian, but it's so authentic I don't even feel like I'm missing out on meat. The price for the quality is also something to rave about! I believe it's $7.99 for a buffet with naan to accompany your food. My personal favorites here are the Chana masala, saag paneer, and this tangy yellow turmeric dish. This place is a tiny, family owned place where its authenticity cannot be beat. They even play Bollywood tunes in the background. As far as ambiance goes, this place is no frills. You get your water from an igloo sports cooler, but this shouldn't deter you. What they don't spend on ambiance is made up for in the flavors and love they put into their food. This was my first indian buffet experience in Houston (native Californian here) and I was pleased with what I found at Bombay sweets. When I went (a Friday lunch) they had all your standards (maybe 16 total dish options) including a couple I had never seen before. I honestly don't remember the names of each, but I tried EVERY single one and all of them tasted fresh and had good flavor. One thing I appreciated in particular was the water station. Let's be honest, buffets often have less-than-super-fast waiters (they generally earn less tips since people don't consider their genuine waiters). The option to retrieve and refill your own water class worked out quite nicely for us then, since when I accidently bit on a spicy pepper (perhaps more than once lol) I didn't have to hunt down somebody but instead ran over to the water jug. Some people would consider this tacky, but those people probably wouldn't find themselves at a joint like Bombay anyways haha. As for the staff, they were nice enough. Not the MOST attentive perhaps, but like I previously said, that's typical of buffets in my experience. When we needed them, though, they were there ready to serve (and with a smile). As previously stated by fellow Yelpers, the ~7.99 price is a bit steep for a vegetarian buffet (I pay the same price back home for a buffet that includes many meat dishes) but hey, it's still a pretty good bargain if you fill up your belly. I have been to a lot of Indian buffets on Hillcroft and by far the best Indian veg buffet. I think the buffet is decently priced its about $8.
