I gave this place a few chances - I went to their food truck and their restaurant, and got a meal from them that was catered for an event I went to. I love banh mi and soba noodles typically so I really thought I'd love this place. The service is pretty good - things are made to order and the lines aren't too long if you go before or after lunchtime. The ingredients always seem fresh which is another plus. However, every time I've had the food it is just so, so plain - soba, chicken, and other main meal components are unflavored and relatively dry. Maybe it's a part of Bon Me's health mantra but time and time again I've gotten something, it looks good, it sounds good, but it's like eating textured water. I don't know how they manage to succeed in keeping the taste so consistently bland. I grew up with boiled chicken, so I figured I knew what bland was. I remember the catered meals - they were presented so nicely, but when it came to eating the food everything was sauceless - Teriyaki chicken and soba noodles was plain chicken and plain soba noodles. It was very busy so I wouldn't recommend eating inside if you have a larger party because there are people using the space waiting for their order (also kind of loud). One of the best meals you can get in Cambridge for less than $15! It's pretty difficult to find a full meal, with meat, vegetables and a main carb for under $15, that's not just a sandwich, but Bon Me is one of the few awesome places where you can! Their dishes are an amazing bang for your buck in terms of portion size and all of their dishes are so tasty. This chicken and pho dish had an amazing blend of savory and sweet from the sauce. The vegetables and peanuts have the dish a variety of textures. Thinking about it still makes my mouth water!! Would highly recommend Bon Me for a quick lunch or refreshing snack (you would probably have to split a dish between two people as a snack) on a hot day! When I visited two weeks ago, indoor dining was still closed off (understandably, as it is a small place) but there are plenty of small tables spread out to abide with social distancing guidelines. This was my first experience with Bon Me. I live in a small MI town with almost zero ethnic restaurants, so I was excited to find this place 1/2 mile from my Airbnb. I've had lots of good Vietnamese in the Pacific Northwest, so that was my benchmark. I ordered the Bun Bowl and was very disappointed. It had way too much finely chopped chicken (more like ground chicken with the occasional chunk - it was very unappetizing), too much liquid, soggy veggies, and not enough noodles. It was a big mushy mess, to be honest. I only ate about half of it. And even though I told the counter cashier (sorry, missed the iPad thing - I figured that was just there for when it got busy!) that my order was dine-in, my food came in a carry-out container. So much for trying not to create more trash! On the flip side, the Basil Limeade was delicious! Not too sweet, and really refreshing on an unseasonably warm fall evening. Since there are so many others raving about this place, I'm thinking maybe I ordered the wrong thing or am unfairly comparing it to what I was used to (which was a light and fresh stir-fried beef vermicelli salad bowl). Came here a couple of times for lunch. I've tried the food truck fave and the miso kimchi ramen. They are both pretty filling, as they were decent sized portions. I understand why the food truck fave is called what it is-it's really good. It's a bit spicy for those who don't like heat though. I've also had their un-thai iced tea a couple of times. Love Bon Me. Wish I worked in the Financial District to relish in Bon Me yummies like every day. On days that I would get off work early, I'd head to Boston, and hit up the food trucks in Dewey Square. There would be Mei Mei, Cookie Monstah, Clover and almost always, Bon Me. I've been here twice now. The first time, I tried the Chinese BBQ pork with rice and salad. It was good, but a little on the salty side. I've been to both the food truck (which is parked for lunch most days in the Harvard Square Science Center plaza) and the brick and mortar place in Kendall (corrected - open for lunch and dinner!). Bon Me is very very good. The food the sell is fresh and very delicious. You can tell they're quite popular from how ubiquitous their cardboard food boxes have become on campus. I've had both their sandwich and their noodle salad and would definitely recommend both. I think the soba is a lot better than the rice noodle salad, but both come with generous heaps of veggies, noodles, and whatever meat/tofu you decided to get. For the salads, they have three dressings. The Vietnamese vinaigrette is quite reminiscent of Vietnamese fish sauce, and even gives off that faint, sweet-stinky pungent smell. The peanut dressing is quite spicy. The toasted sesame is probably my favourite, although fair warning it's quite salty. T.ey have a fourth one - miso lime - that I have to go try now! The sandwich is pretty big, and comes heaped with pickled veggies and meat - they even get the fish sauce and pate in right. When I get it, the bread is usually kind of stale but not in a bad way. I feel a little torn about prices - in terms of Harvard Square and the general area (as well as the huge amount of food you're getting) Bon Me is a very good deal. However, I could go to Chinatown to get a better bahn mi for half the price. The meat and tofu options are all quite good - I think their miso pulled pork is very popular, but I personally find it way to salty and very very soggy - it'll make your sandwich very soggy, and the mountain of slop is a lot to get through if your order it on their noodle salad. I would say that that BBQ pork is my favourite. Bon Me isn't very authentic if you're looking for real, authentic Vietnamese food, but overall, it's delicious and pretty affordable. If you're ever close to Kendall or spot the truck it's absolutely worth a try. read more

This is my go to lunch place when we don't order as a group. Food is very consistent every time I order. The staff is friendly and the lines move quickly. They have self ordering kiosks now which I don't like as I customize my order quite a bit. Their menu has grown since first opening. They now have hot soup to go with rice bowls and subs. I've praised the laurels of Bon Me trucks, all their glorious proteins, tea smoked eggs, spicy ginger lemonades and other regulars on the menus from wheels to walls. The flagship brick & mortar location, however, offers three bonuses (bonuss? bonii?): seating, speed and specials! The third being a day-to-dusk menu, served only during weeknights and all day Saturday. For this spring, we're talking cilantro pesto noodle salad, bubble tea, and - brace yourselves, soup fans - house made ramen. Bon Me is a well-oiled machine, putting you face-deep in fresh food before the three minute mark post-ordering. Came here with my sister for lunch around noon on Wednesday. The pros and cons from my previous review are still true (actually all the indoor seating was open, but the weather was so great, no one wanted to sit indoors!), but now they have bubble tea! I was skeptical at first that it would be anything special, but it was actually really good! They describe it as "black tea, bubbles, and a splash of half and half" so I was concerned that it wouldn't be very milky, but it actually came out tasting basically like milk tea, perhaps even moreso than at other places. I have to say that, overall, I find vietnamese food quite dull. That being said, Ive kept rying because i was sure eventually id find something I like. I was wrong. I had the fried green beans which was cold and didnt taste like much other than the fried, also cold, garlic on top. I also had the veggie udon noodles which had a curry sauce on them which was quite good. Except the noodles were overcooked, the poached egg on top just made it messy, and the beans were just a hard texture on top. Service should have better explained how things worked because we didnt see the FREE popcotn till the end which WAS delicious. I only want Thai chili popcorn for the rest of my popcorn eating days. I work right around the corner from Bon Me and have gotten lunch from this place on several occasions. My first impression was that their subs are pretty good. Around a year and a half ago was the first time I tried one of their rice bowls, which ended up being a rather traumatic experience. I found a dead bee in my rice bowl. Now, I understand that something like this may not bother some people, but I am almost positive that the larger majority of the U.S population does not enjoy having insects in their food. In fact, most people are repulsed by it. I wish I still had the picture of the bee in my food to post on here. After pulling myself back together, I submitted a complaint on their website, to which they promptly replied. The responder apologized and explained that this very rarely happens, and that their employees are told to take great care in examining their produce before it goes over the counter. Along with the apology I was emailed one voucher for a free lunch. Sure. Understandable. Everyone makes mistakes. It took me a while to get over what happened, as I'm sure it would for many. I finally decided to give it another go. I picked up a rice bowl, brought it back to my desk and started eating it... I found another dead bug in my food. I couldn't believe it. This one was some weird dragon fly type insect. What are the odds that the one day I go back after not being there for around a year and a half, I have the same traumatic experience? Needless to say, I will not be returning ever again, and I advise any brave soul who does to make sure and check for bugs. read more

While this was indeed a "pulled pork sandwich", it wasn't even on the same continent as a banh mi. Yes, I know they're supposed to be "untraditional". That apparently includes discarding the tradition commonly called FLAVOR. A good Vietnamese sandwich has a generous helping of daikon, carrot (or other veggie), cilantro, and peppers to give a balance of texture, spice, sour, and sweet. This had a few limp carrots stuffed in the bottom and almost no radish or cilantro. The alleged "spicy mayo" had about as much kick as a no-legged racehorse. Basically, it was a bun (and the bread *was* good) stuffed with pulled pork. I guess the fame has caused these folks to go seriously downhill, based on how much other Yelpers have raved about the truck. read more

Came here expecting to get some sandwiches, and ended up opting for their noodle boxes, which almost seemed like "deconstructed" Bahn Mi's. There are electronic kiosks at the front where you can choose what goes into your box, and it almost seems like a chipotle-style way of ordering: you get your base, meats, greens, and sauces. The food comes out super fast, and the people manning the counter are pretty busy, so don't expect any special treatment! I got an order of noodles with pork and all of the vegetables drizzled with the Vietnamese sauce. The food isn't too flavorful (or maybe I ordered the wrong combination of sauces, though I did pack a bunch of takeout sriracha cups to save the day), so that was disappointing, but it is quick and cheap! This place is all about fast food style Vietnamese food. You can place an order on self service ipad monitor. They always make food and get it ready within only few minutes. If you are running to somewhere like urgent yoga class or improv class this will be a good place to eat or get your takeout. My husband Michael and I got the cha shu rice bowl and tan tan noodle they both were good. Cheap, easy, tasty. Just try out. They also recently expanded their menu to Korean food such as bi bim bob. I've heard of Bon Me a lot, so come here to try. I thought it's Vietnamese, but there are options like Korean, Japanese and Chinese. One thing to note is that none looks authentic Asian food, more like Asian fusion. I got the chicken udon noodle soup. It's really really ok. The chicken has a lot of black pepper so it tastes like black pepper. The udon doesn't taste like the udon I normally eat but I like it. The noodles and the egg are probably the only things I like.
