Where to begin? On a scale of any kind, this place is so bad it doesn't even deserve to be on the scale. For starters, we placed an order online, showed up at the appointed time, and were told...oh, that doesn't work. Good to know. I was already invested, so I went ahead and placed the same order in-person. The food came out hot, which was pretty much the only plus. The chicken had an "old, fried- too many times in dirty grease, with zero flavor" taste. The rubbery texture reminded me of my own failed attempts to heat fried chicken in the microwave. I was excited to come here from winning a gift card at a yelp event, because their wings tasted amazing at the event. We came in on a Saturday around 3 and were seated right away. Our server came to us quickly, gave us time to look at menu and came back and took order. I ordered bonesless soy and sweet and I initially wanted their pork bao but was informed they were out, so upon recommendation I got the sliders instead. My biggest complaint is the quality of the food here. Our food took awhile but came out room temperature. Upon looking at my plate and my husband's, I noticed there wasn't any slaw as the menu stated. I asked the waiter who brought out one for me but didn't even bother to ask my husband what he wanted. We were a little confused, and waited awhile for him to come back. The manager (at least we think she was a manager) ended up bringing some to my husband. The sliders...were a joke. First let me start off with, I live in Spring Valley Village and we're very close to "Korean Town" on Long Point between Gessner and Bingle. We have some of the finest Korean food in the country in this area. So my water mark is HIGH, and I'm a long time admirer of Korean Fried Chicken (KFC). Bonchon is a fast food restaurant with table service, not a "dining" restaurant. However the prices on their menu are above their level of service and ambiance. The KFC was actual wings and legs, other parts of the chicken were not offered. $13 for 10 wings is high when you compare them to BWW, Pluckers, and etc. Side orders are way over priced, $4.00 for fries?!? $7.00 for seasoned fries or onion rings. Small portions for the price. Fries were much better than the onion rings. While it takes 15 minutes to get your fried chicken, it's still fast food, and way too expensive for fast food. It's the Korean answer to Panda Express. Take a look at the pictures posted by patrons, quite a bit of difference than those taken by the restaurant. The patron's pictures are acurate, the business photos are not. Take note, these wings are about the smallest I've ever seen, maybe cornish hen wings or banty rooster wings. Pluckers wings are twice the size and 1/2 the price. Only two sauces at Bonchon, Soy Garlic and Spicy. The spicy are very spicy, so if you not into "spicy" you'd better get the Soy Garlic, which is rather mild. This was a "one and done" visit, but if for some reason I do go back, I won't have wings or rings, it'll be for something else on the menu. The table next to us had the Udon Soup and it looked pretty good; but then again we have some great Ramon, Korean and Pho soup restaurants around Houston, who specialize in soup, so I'm not sure if that would be a good choice either. Your best bet for Korea food of any type is to head on over to Spring Branch, Long Point has many great Korea places to pick from. If you really want some authentic KFC you need to head to the stall in Super H Mart. Tore Ore, I think, been there a dozen times but never really took not of the spelling of the name. Once you've had their chicken you'll find your way back with out the name. Order the chicken and then spend the 15-20 minutes shopping at H Mart while you KFC is cooking. The chicken was over cooked and came colder than what one would expect, even after a short car trip. The amount of spicy sauce used overpowered the taste of anything else. Normally one wants the spice to compliment the chicken but this way missed the mark. The chicken was also greasy and upset both of our stomachs. Where did we go wrong? Bonchon had been our "go-to" spot for chicken. It was so good, like many of you, I didn't write my review during the good times. I mean, we stopped eating chicken from anywhere else after we discovered them last year. All was well until we showed up one night near closing time. We normally have it delivered but THIS night we wanted it hot and fresh. The gentleman we believe to be the owner left right after we placed our order. This is when our visit went downhill. We order our "regular" and a couple drinks. It took way too long for our drinks to be made. In the meantime there were sounds of laughter and celebration coming from the kitchen; no food. Our order started showing up in phases. We got onion rings which got cold as we waited for our chicken. Then, when the chicken came out we only got the wings. The server stated that there had been some delay but the legs were cooking. 45 minutes later I asked to speak to a manager. One of the party people emerged from the kitchen and stated she was the manager. She explained that the legs take longer to cook than the wings. This makes sense to me but wouldn't a good chef begin cooking the food that takes longer to cook first? Not THIS night because the party in the kitchen was ON!! Finally the legs came out and we couldn't even eat them. They were rubbery and had no flavor. This is NOT normal for Bonchon. We were fed up and just wanted to leave. The "manager" took the legs off the bill. We paid and walked out. My bride said this may have happened because we went in near their closing time. If that's the case I need to know. so first off, I walk in (on my lunch break, which is a huge mistake for anyone thinking of doing this) No one is at the hostess area; I stood there for a good five minutes before the bartender noticed me and did offer for me to seat at the bar. At 12:40 I asked for my tab and said you can just cancel the fries I guess.. anyway. Tacos weren't bad but service left a bad taste in my mouth so probs won't be coming back here. She comes back with the tab and says "I went ahead and took off the fries since they forgot to make them" ummm thanks? I wasn't going to pay for fries I never got anyway. This place has been on my radar to try for sometime, so day after Christmas while I was still shopping me and cousin decided to give them a whirl. First when we walked in the place it looked like it was in complete disarray. Menu looks great and they have a great Lunch menu were many options are $8.00 or less. We ordered the Chicken of course and we choose to get half of them sauced in the the soy garlic sauce and the other we wanted plain with the sauce on the side. My cousin hates wet soggy wings so this is typically how she orders her wings everywhere. We also ordered a bowl of the Japchae which is Glass noodles, red peppers, carrots, spinach, mushrooms and thinly sliced marinated beef flavored with Soy Garlic sauce & stir-fried with sesame oil. This picture of this on the menu looked plentiful and legit and for $13.00 I knew it was going to be reminiscent of a bowl of Ramen. The waitress came back and said they could not put any sauce on the side...... so weird but we said ok no worries. FOOD-Chicken wings-Very Crispy texture, fried nicely with a good flavor of the Soy Garlic. However it wasn't anything that blew my mind but definitely tasty. They really taste like regular chicken wings from Wing Stop. The Korean fried chicken I have had in the past has a different batter and flavor that separates it from what us Americans do. Parmesan Fries-OFFFF THEEEE CHAINNNNNN!!!! By far the best thing we ate. They were crispy almost a tempura texture with a perfect amount of seasoning topped with Parmesan and Parsley. Soo freakin good I would come back just for these. Japache-I swear it came looking like someone ate half of the bowl. No lie it was probably 1/4 cup of noodles in there with beef that was the texture of beef jerky. We told the waitress that we were not happy about it and she said she would take it off. The manager came by and we told him about the amount in the bowl as well as the texture. He said that they weigh the portions and it was correct. I wasn't in the mood to argue and clearly he wasn't the typical Customer must have a great experience kind of guy. He took it away and we got our check. Our overall experience at this Bonchon location was good! We were seated quickly. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful, and our meal was very tasty! We ordered the medium size, half spicy, half garlic platter of fried chicken as well as tteokbokki as an appetizer (it's one of my favorite Korean meals!). I was excited to try Bonchon because I've heard many good things about the locations in Philly and New York. Let me say this first: if you're looking to experience traditional and authentic Korean friend chicken and meals, Bonchon may not be the best place to visit. The food is good but it has a more of a Korean/American fusion feel...so don't be disappointed when your tteokbokki comes with cheese on top. It's supposed to! Back to the review! Our chicken was savory and cooked well! Not overdone or undercooked. I like good, crispy skin and our chicken came through! The garlic sauce was almost divine! Excellent flavor--I could've eaten a spoonful of it. The spicy sauce was tasty, but after a leg or two, was almost too spicy. This is coming from someone who loves spice! I think the heat could've been taken down a notch with the spicy and it would have been a perfect experience. The tteokbokki looked very American. It had a soupy consistency, rather than a thick ooze of sauce I'm used to in more traditional versions. It was still very good, however, and I ate all the rice cake and fish cake before anyone else could get to them! I thought the dining room could have been kept a little more cleaner and neater. I realize this just may be a pet peeve of mine, but a few tables in need of wiping down and strewn chairs around tables doesn't present well. I've reserved my review so I could eat here a few times and really get to know this new local gem. I'll also say that I'm using a new rating system going forward into 2017 and beyond, so here it goes. Establishment: earned: Visually it's laid out nicely, and is clean to the naked eye, (yes! so far so good bonchon!) Waitstaff: earned: My smile goes out to the men and women who work here. Every customer is greeted warmly and asked to wait or shown to the table available(you do have the option of requesting a specific table, you may have to wait longer if the night is busy). The Waitstaff will explain the menu items and usually be within earshot to assist with ongoing needs. There are issues with the actual service, but I deducted that star below. The staff themselves are friendly. Accommodating, and will apologize and try to set things right is there are issues. They are very pleasant and seem to be working hard when the place is very busy. Service: not earned: it's a toss up 50/50..the waitstaff here work hard and are polite, they do their absolute best... I think, but the service is lacking and somewhat disjointed. I've eaten here many times over several months and while dining in, there is always some issue with the order, and or the service is super slow. I know more than others about the cooking process, but a spade is a spade. Food/Drinks: earned: My favorite thing to order here is the Korean friend chicken wings! Man! The do a really great job on those, they even accommodate special request on those. This chicken is double fried for that crunch and basted with either their savory soy garlic sauce or their lip torching spicy one. I love both and always order a few spicy just to keep things interesting. I've also developed a taste for their killer kimchicoleslaw! Food/Drinks: earned: The first time I came here with some friends, the owner Jim invited us to taste the flavored souchu cocktails, my friends all agree that they are outstanding. As for the more everyday type of drinks, I always order the flavored lemonade. Try the mango one, it's amazing, and you get free refills! Bye bye boring soda. Other things to note, they have plenty of parking available, a nice outdoor area to eat and drink in during the summer, are kid friendly and date night appropriate. My over all suggestion is to pack some patience, order the chicken and fries, get a nice lemonade and your meal and experience will be fine. I was extremely excited to try this Bonchon because the rating was higher then the one in Pearland but the experience was underwhelming. Food: 3 I ordered the lunch special chicken strips and seasoned fries. In comparison to the Bonchon in Pearland: the portion of the fries was bigger but the size of chicken strips was smaller. (They were smaller then the ones at Dak and Bop which are already extremely small) Also, unlike the location in Pearland they come separately instead of as a combo. The fries were good but the reason why I am giving the food 3 stars is because the chicken strips were only ok. The strips came out lukewarm instead of hot like they would at other Korean fried locations. As a result, when you take the first bite there isn't that crunch/snap that you would expect. The boneless chickens at wing stop are more crispy then the ones here. They were also very thin which I think contributed to how dry the chicken was. Finally, the final blow was that it was a bit on the bland side. I did not get hit with the taste of soy garlic like I did at the other location. As a result, I'm giving them a three because they were edible but nothing really stood out about them. Service: 3.5 It started out well. My friends and I were seated and given our drinks promptly but then it became inconsistent. I noticed the same thing happening to other customers. Once we got our food, the staff left and never offered napkins or utensils and it took a while to get the staff's attention to get our water refilled.
