I've been searching for the best Korean Fried Chicken in Houston for a while now. Coming from Bangkok, BonChon Chicken has always been a favorite of mine - so naturally, I was ecstatic when they announced their Houston opening! After making the 40 minute drive to Katy, the experience was well worth it. Unlike some other places around Houston I've tried, the soy-garlic flavor was intense and delightful, and the chicken was perfectly crispy and crunchy. I went with two Korean friends, who were both equally impressed by the quality of the food! Our waiter was super friendly and joked with us a lot, and the food came within 15 minutes of us ordering - Dak and Bop in Museum District took 30 minutes. All in all, this is as great of an experience as you'll get with KFC in Houston. BonChon does not disappoint! read more

So. I have eaten here about eight times. I seriously doubt there will be a ninth. Bonchon is good for deep fried wings but in no way should be called Korean. On this last visit I ordered wings... they have been good each time I ordered. Again not authentic Korean food in any way. I do recommend them. I ordered the Pork Buns. Well the flavors were okay but the meat had such a heavy layer of pork fat it was unpleasant to eat. I had to cut the fat off befoe eating them. I am not lazy but I paid to have my food made. I also had the Bibimbap with Bulgogie. I was excited to order however my mood swiftly changed when I received a seriously failed attempt at such a classic Korean dish. After seeing a lot of Instagram posts about this place me and my friend decided to give it a try since we were in the area. And OMG the wings here are just soooo good! But be careful with the spicy, I can handle my spicy food relatively well and these innocent looking wings had me drinking so much water. But it was definitely one of those "hurt so good" kinda spicy. It was slow when we came in, but it did take me a few tries to get the waitress' attention once we were done eating and I needed to get our checks... Overall the fried chicken here definitely lives up to the hype! I was quite disappointed that, with so many people having dietary restrictions these days, Bonchon has made no effort to meet those needs. Absolutely none of their menu options were gluten-free as everything has soy sauce. There were hardly any staff, so we had to seat ourselves and grab our own menus; then the server was nice, but not helpful at all as I tried to figure out what on the menu I might possibly be able to eat. I ordered the Bulgogi. Taste and flavor good but this 3 stars is for the size of portions of meat. Photos show like the bowl is Full, but it's only Full of rice. 80% of bowl is Rice and the top 20% is the meat and vegetables. I am so happy that Bonchon made its way to Texas, and two locations around the Houston area at that, but I am not so pleased with their service specifically at this Katy location. I have dined at this location a few times since it opened, and the last one was not a good one. The fact that our waiter at multiple times picked up my friend's water cup from his hand while he was in mid drink to refill was not good, and as well taking our plates when it was not ready to be picked up or without asking was not cool. Everything felt wrong when it took her a long time to get our order and she seemed distracted while taking our order. Maybe it was an off day, but it was not good. I would gladly make my way from the Woodlands area to come eat at Bonchon because I love, love the Korean Fried Chicken (KFC), but this service is not worth it. read more

I'm not one to complain but this place had HORRIBLEEEEEE customer service I waited to get seated for 20 minutes when there was literally only one table of 4 seated. The server simply didn't want to seat us because she was at the end of her shift and waiting for the other server to show up. When finally seated we ordered right away and still took forever for food to come. Once arrived I was so excited and hungry but quickly very disappointed. The food was cold. After hearing raving reviews about this place I wanted to give it a shot but NEVER AGAIN will we come back. On top of this I STILL left tip. I was a server one so I understand the struggle.. especially since this was a new waitress(not the one who made us wait or took our order) I didn't think it was fair that she would suffer because of her horrible coworker. However, when I checked my bank statement they added more onto the tip. I know this for fact because I tipped cash both to my server and bartender. There was no way for them to mistake it. I went in last week to try them out for the first time. They aren't an overly large but van hold a fair amount of people. I placed and order to go for the soy garlic flavored wings and I had a drink while I waited. They have a pretty well stocked bar! They only have 2 types of wings: the soy garlic and spicy. The service was pretty good and I made conversation with the bar tender while I waited. Before long my order was ready before I finished my drink. Once I arrived at home I immediately sat down to try them out. It was a different flavor than I was used to but not bad. They were fried but not too crispy. I have been here twice and its completely overpriced, definitely can easily make this at home or buy frozen pack at the grocery store.. Pretty sure the mixed reviews are due to the server because it seems to be a hit or miss with everyone. Anyways, I finally got to try this place after waiting for a couple of a months and I am sooo glad I did. After being disappointed with Hoodadak (in comparison to Rice Chicken in Dallas), this definitely made me happy that I can have some KFC here in Houston. Unfortunately this restaurant does not have an original flavor but the two flavors they do have are amazing! My friend and I ordered the lunch portion of wings (8 total), a side of seasoned fries, and pork buns which was more than enough food for the two of us. Our server was very attentive throughout our dining experience and not just for the ordering portion which I appreciated. I didn't have to wait at all and I came in for lunch on a Friday (it was basically completely filled after we sat down). The chicken itself was sooo juicy, flavorful, and crispy in all the right spots. I enjoyed that although both flavors were saucy, they weren't soggy or overwhemingly sauced as you can see in everyone's pictures. The soy garlic had the hints of garlic and not to sweet, so it was perfect to me but I would have to say the spicy is better than the garlic. I absolutely LOVED the spicy, but that's also because I love spicy food and have been craving it a lot! The seasoned fries were made well, extra hot and not too overdone. Surprisingly, it was a lot to eat (I thought we would be short on fries but we struggled to finish them). The pork bellies were about $11 for 3 of them, which was okay in pricing. The buns were very soft and warm and the pork belly was made just right as well. I really enjoyed this meal and service was always pleasant. Maybe they're in the process of weeding out the bad servers or even tweaking everything up a bit but I would definitely come back. 5 star rating based solely on their KFC (Korean fried chicken). I've experienced BonChon in Dallas and New York before so only ordered wings since that's what we came for. We ordered 30 wings half and half meaning 15 garlic and 15 spicy. Wings here are a little bit bigger which is why it's almost $1/wing. Love that their KFC isn't completely drowned in sauce but just lightly tossed to evenly cover. The spicy wings have a kick to them but not intolerable unless you can't handle heat. It's packed with spice + flavor and not just drenched in hot sauce. The garlic wings wasn't too garlic-y but more of an ease from eating too much spicy. Definitely prefer the spicy over garlic though. WARNING: We were here during soft opening and things are still rocky for them. They had issues with opening time and kept pushing the time back. We had to leave, come back, then wait in line out the door. We sat at the bar which had no bartender. Food tickets were being lost. Service was slow and food took a VERY long time to come out. I am a big fan of Korean food, and all other things Korean! I've been a resident of Katy for over 10 years so I love seeing the diversity that has been popping up around. I drive by the Bonchon sign pretty often and was SO EXCITED to give it a try. We saw the bad reviews, and our friends warned us, but we didn't listen and came anyways. It was a weekday, and just as they were opening so there weren't that many people there. Food: Chicken Wings - Half Half (Soy Garlic and Spicy): The wings weren't too bad. There's a good crunch on the outside and well sauced. The soy garlic is on the sweet side, and the spicy does actually have a kick to it. Season Fries: Nothing special, but extra salty. It may have been just our batch but they were really salty. Kim Chi Pancake Trio: Disgusting. I ate about half of one and asked my husband to finish the rest (we try not to waste food). The outside was greasy where I felt like my lips were being glossed by grease. The inside felt uncooked and mushy. I was not a fan! I've had Korean style pancakes before and this was not up to par. Service: We weren't greeted when we first got there. We had to peek around the corner to see all the employees standing near the back chatting. Then someone came up, greeted and seated us. The waiter we had was a really sweet teenager. He checked on us, made sure everything was okay, and conversed a little with us throughout our time there. Him and the chicken are the only reasons why I'm not giving no stars! Atmosphere: There's a dining and bar area. Booths against the wall, and tables in the center. Came here for family dinner on a Thursday night at 7 ish p.m. We had a 20 minute wait because it seemed like everyone was here in Katy. Their fried chicken was good but not very memorable. We had the half and half because we wanted to try out their Soy Garlic and Spicy. We had also ordered their Salmon Avocado Ball - I prefer going to Yard house for their Tuna roll instead. I'd like to start by saying that my review is mainly based off of how this Bonchon compares to the restaurants I experienced in Thailand. The atmosphere was nice; this location had the same decor as my previous experiences. One thing that got worse the longer we stayed was the choice in music. It was obvious that the employees tuned in to a streaming service (the ad came on while I was there), but the channel was only Beyoncé music. I think she is great, but 45 (ish) straight minutes is more than enough. There was no discrimination to what Beyonce song played as I certainly heard a Christmas tune in there (it's January 16th). I assumed this experience would be experimental as they offered an almost completely different menu. This restaurant offered wings, boneless wings and strips. I just wanted the same dish I had in Thailand, so I played the guessing game with the menu. The portions and prices were not comparable (small boneless 6 piece in Thailand was maybr $6, small boneless here was 10 pieces at $15). I ended up selecting the small soy strips. The flavor was right, but there wasn't really any breading which meant less, to no crunch. The small was VERY filling and I was unable to complete it, but that amazing taste was not the same. We also ordered the seasoned fries. They were cooked to crispy at our request but the flavor didn't really hit. Not so much flavorful as just there. Definitely underwhelming for me as far as service and food quality goes. Came around 7, right before they got reeeeally busy, and was seated promptly. It's a pretty decent sized restaurant with bar seating as well as tables galore. I do see that it does pick up as the dinner rush picks up. Service was bleh. Immediately upon my butt touching the chair, a waitress comes out of nowhere and asked for our drink order. I haven't even gotten settled into my set let alone look at the menu. I noticed this trend as others sat down. Would recommend giving patrons a minute or two to at least peruse the menu. Ordered appetizers and wasn't given little plates, so I asked for them. Our waitress also asked if we wanted napkins... obviously. The restaurant as a whole seems to lack any real system. Waitresses were getting confused and asking one table for their drink order twice, while another table was completely ignored. Ordered the fries, pork belly buns and 20pc half and half wings. The fries were like any other fries. They do have the option of "seasoned" fries which for a three dollars more you could have a sprinkle of parsley and cheese. Definitely not worth an extra $3. Pork buns were meh. The buns weren't warm but kind of rubbery. The wings were alright, the drums were a bit dry... Nice crisp, just wish they were saucier. They are extremely sizable though. After reading everyone else's reviews, I'm inclined to believe that they either didn't sauce my wings enough... or they just gave me all of one flavor. From what I've read, the spicy has a kick to it, but my wings had absolutely no kick. The pickled daikon also was sweet... not pickled enough for my tastebuds. We dined in on a Saturday night. There were a lot of people however there were still empty tables. We were seated right away. It took awhile for a waitress to greet us. After receiving our drinks it took even longer before we saw her again. The menu options sound great. We ordered fried calamari, popcorn chicken, onion rings, Parmesan fries, potstickers, fried rice, and chicken sliders. (There were four of us, I promise). It only took 15 mins for some of the food to come out. The popcorn chicken looked burnt but the waitress assured us that it was normal, it's the batter they use. The pic in the menu looks much lighter and she agreed but said it is supposed to be that darker color. That said, my husband liked it. Picky kids probably won't as was our experience. The potstickers were good, everything was good except the calamari wasn't my husbands favorite. He is a calamari connoisseur. We ordered wings half and half to go because my sisters wanted to try it out. They all liked the chicken. Overall, the food was good, expensive and the service was too slow. Seriously, what is Korean fried chicken? And is this place trying to be Korean, Chinese, Japanese, or what...not sure. FOOD: We ordered the salmon avocado ball to start as an appetizer. It was nearly $10, and it was a small size but it was big enough for four of us to have a taste. The salmon is cooked and is the outer layer of the ball. The avocado is in the very center, and the whole thing is covered in those Japanese sauces. Overall, it was decent. For four people, we got 30 wings (I read on Yelp to avoid the drumsticks due to dryness so wings it is) and we did half & half (half spicy and half regular). It was definitely enough for us, and it comes with a bowl of pickled daikon to cleanse your palette between wings. I enjoyed the taste of the fried skin, but the meat of the chicken itself was bland, and I don't know..it really wasn't my thing. I only ate four wings. We also added an order of their fries, which are VERY fried and crispy. If you like those kind of fries, go for it! SERVICE: Our waitress was very knowledgeable about what to get, and she was honest about what not to get (the takoyaki). We all really appreciated her honesty. What I didn't like was that she checked up on us like 7 times during our meal.. Checking up is great, but this was kind of excessive. I can see why Yelpers have mentioned they need to work out their kinks, because the bus boy came up to us several times to ask if we were done with our food when we really weren't, so it was awkward. Went here on a Sunday afternoon. The place was pretty crowded and I was by myself so I sat at the bar. The guy working behind the bar was pretty good taking my order and bringing out my food. But, that's pretty much about it. I didn't have any napkins/utensils and I never got any refills on my iced tea until I flagged him down. It's a good thing I could reach over just to grab some napkins. The wings were pretty large, crispy and tasty. I ordered half soy garlic and half spicy. The soy garlic being my favorite. The drumsticks were pretty tasty, as well. For $12.95, it's a pretty good deal (6 wings/3 drumsticks). Just on a side note, the drumsticks came out after I was finished with my wings. Tried the food... the best way to describe it is that it is a watered down or washed out version of the original. Sadly this is what happens to most really good stand alone food places that become chains. If I had never had the original BonChon I would say this is a 3-3.5 star. This place is ehh at best for the chicken wings. And the seasoned fries aren't even close to the same. The service was very scattered. You had a the bartender training, taking orders, making drinks, and serving customers all at the same time. It was easy to see he was annoyed and/or flustered. I actually felt bad for him. When I tried to ask for the spicy sauce on the side, they told me that they would not package any sauces to go (company policy). Minus a star for this as well. I should've paid attention to the reviews on this place. To start, there's a discrepancy in price in wings when ordering for take out through yelp and when ordering over the phone. (Save $1 by ordering thru yelp) I didn't appreciate being ignored by one of the workers there as I walked through the door had to wait on a nicer person to address me for my pick up. Having been to experience the original location in New York City, I had a general idea what this chain should taste like. It is their soft opening, so the chicken isn't perfect yet. However, their sauce is very good and the same as NYC. The down side is they are still playing with the crispness of the chicken. Some wings were crispy and some were on the soft side. But I'm sure over time they will figure it out. The complimentary radish wasn't ready to be served. They need to let it steep longer in the juice for more "pickled" flavor so it will have the refreshing taste it is suppose to have. The staff was hardworking and tried their best to make things go smoothly for everyone. Even asked our opinions on how to improve (the purpose of soft opening).
