I've been a Fan of Bonchon since their Sunnyvale location opened up. So I made sure I grabbed my Urban Gear . Jumped into my UC Whip and rolled to Newark . Bonchon is located in a New Strip mall on Cedar . There's plenty of parking. So I stashed my Whip there and rolled in. I was greeted at the Front Counter . I was asked by the Hostess of I wanted a Table or to sit at the Bar . I was impressed by the Décor of Bonchon . It has an Upscale feel to it. There are 7 LCD TVs for Entertainment . I opted to Sit at the Bar. So I could watch all the Different Basketball Games . I was greeted by the Bartender / Team Trainer . She was quite charming , friendly and knowledgeable about Bonchons Menu and their offerings . From our Chat I found out she is the Chefs Wife and a recent transplant from the Big Apple . She made me feel like I was at Home very cool . She ask for my Beverage order and presented me with the Laminated Double Sided menu. I perused the Menu and Ordered the Small Wings and Drumstick Combo Chicken Meal with Soy Garlic and Spicy Sauces and the Onion Rings . While I was waiting I met the Chef . He started with Bonchon in New York and relocated to Cali to run the Kitchen at this Bonchon . He explained that Bonchon Newark is in a Soft Opening Phase and that they are still training the Staff . So Be Patient Folks the Employees are still learning their jobs. I was also introduced to the Owner Ron . He was pretty nice also . He explained he is having a hard time hiring people to work at Bonchon . Labor is a Commodity right now . Ron also mentioned he might open another Bonchon in Fremont or Alameda in the Future ? A Server delivered my Chicken Combo with a Bowl of Pickled Radishes . I was impressed when I saw the Chicken Combo the Portion size is good sized . The Flavors " OFF THE CHART YUMMY" !!! My Onion Rings arrived a few minutes later . They came with Catsup and 3 Dipping Sauces - Kimchi , Ranch and Siracha . I really enjoyed my Meal . The Employees were really friendly . I was talking to the Bar Back . He was from the Midwest and really likes Ron and Bonchon . He really likes his job and the possibilities . Prior to moving to the Bay I kept seeing BonChon on my activity feed so I just couldn't wait to experience it for myself and tonight was my night...From the packed dinning area, I knew that this place was going to be good. Ryan, our server who by the way is absolutely awesome and provided exceptional customer service recommended a handful of items in which we ordered. Potstickers: Exceptionally delicious, with a perfect crunchy exterior. These are worth ordering! Shrimp Shumai: Good, but not great. The sauce smothered over the shrimp has an interesting wasabi-like after taste that didn't sit well with my tastebuds. Bulgogi Sliders: Order this! Tasty, juicy beef with every bite and the buns are fresh. Seasoned Fries: Pretty general and are a great option to have with chicken versus white rice. Bonchon Chicken, Half & Half: Half garlic and Half Spicy, this is some good chicken! The initial crunch of the spicy flavored drumsticks is a spice-lovers Heaven. The skin is rich with flavor and once you get to the center meat, it only gets better! All around full of juicy-goodness. I absolutely LOVE the spicy flavored drumsticks, where you get more meat for your buck compared to the wings. The garlic flavored chicken is good but doesn't have as much flavor as the spicy option. If I were you, skip the garlic and go straight for the spicy flavor!!! I remember hearing how excited some of my friends were when they found out Bonchon was opening up in Elk Grove, so naturally, I was stoked to try out Bonchon near my hometown. ANTS?! - I came here on a Saturday afternoon, and we were quickly seated... at a table that had a few ants crawling on it. Ew! After I killed them, they didn't seem to come back (or maybe I was too interested in our wings). Either way, that was gross. FOOD - Anyways, the food is decent, and I think the prices for wings are reasonable. I'd definitely recommend getting the SOY GARLIC WINGS! The flavor is well worth it. I wasn't a big fan of the spicy wings. The taste of the SALMON AVOCADO BALL was all right as it was mostly a chunk of crab meat covered in a LOT of sauces plus bits of salmon and avocado. It was a bit expensive for the portion size too. SERVICE - It's pretty awful. The restaurant wasn't busy at all, and it took us a while for a waitress to come take our order as they never looked in our direction. It also took a while for us to get our food. And it also took us a while to flag down a waitress to get the check. I also watched a guy at a table next to us have his hand up for a solid 5 minutes trying to get a waitress' attention for a refill of his drink. And he managed to make eye contact with one of the waitresses, who then looked away and ignored him. Yeah... it was bad. Soft opening but for how long? This location was apparently relocated from down the street. I have to admit, we came here 44 minutes before they closed as we were still deciding where to eat but we still waited because we wanted to try their chicken. The place was clean, modern and bright but was a small place that can only fit 49 people in here. I could only see 15 2-seater tables and maybe 10 high chairs at the bar. There was so much open space but was limited to seating probably by the fire hazard requirements; too bad. We were seated 15 minutes before closing but still served us. Chicken is delicious! However, we had issues with the rice. It was spoiled! What could I expect from a place about to close in 45 min? Of course their rice wouldn't be as fresh. Good thing my friend smelled it before my sis ate any. It had this rancid smell. I felt so bad for leaving the two bowls full after our server, Juancarlos (with glasses), was so nice and followed up on everything. Apart from the rice issue, we ordered a large combo with 15 wings and 8 drumettes (actual size drumsticks) all soy garlic flavor. So bad for my health since I normally take the chicken skin off but those wings had that sweet savory glaze and soft but crunchy exterior. Gah it's so good! My friend just went to the San Mateo location last week and she asked if we could eat here. I liked the japchae noodles, especially the soft flavorful thinly sliced beef. Lots of veggies & meat but barely any noodles! I normally don't ask for more starch; however, I'll make an exception. More noodles please! The owner and staff were kind enough to stay open 30 min after 9pm closing time on a Saturday night and cheerfully gave goodbyes on the way out. Please check the rice/any food before serving it. Having had Bonchon in Korea, the chicken here is definitely bigger (America!) and the flavors seem to be slightly different. They don't have the original flavor, or maybe that is the soy garlic flavor? I love how there is minimal sauce on the KFC, as the flavors are infused in the chicken batter. Food ordered: - Soy Garlic Chicken Wings with a side of kimchi: 2/5 I could taste the soy garlic seasoning, but it was very light. I have had soy garlic wings from other places, and those were packed with flavor and delicious. Bummed that Bonchon did not get this flavor right. The kimchi on the side was also more sour than I am used to and had a lot of red pepper paste sauce. - Spicy Drumsticks with a side of pickled radish: 5/5 I loved the spicy drumsticks. Not only are the drumsticks super meaty, the spicy drumsticks had the perfect amount of heat and savoriness to them. The pickled radish on the side was simple and refreshing, and I recommend it as a side. - Takoyaki: 2/5 The takoyaki had about 2 small chunks of octopus in each ball, and the rest was a little bit of lettuce and then, flour filling. Really delicious food! Everything was hot, fresh, and all the flavors were on point. We ordered to go. I wish we had had the time and hunger to sit and grub here! There was so much I wanted to try but we were just tiding ourselves over until an event we had later on. I ordered a salmon avocado ball my husband got bibimbap and our friend ordered half and half wings, soy garlic and spicy, and a side of fries. The salmon ball was so good, not too fishy and perfectly creamy. It was all the good parts of sushi but with cooked fish! My husbands bibimbap was hot and full of not just rice but plenty of veggies and meat! He could barely finish it. Now those soy garlic wings....WOW! I almost wished I had ordered some! I love Bonchon and it's always my go to for Korean fried chicken but this location has failed me so many times that they either over season the chicken or under seasoned it. The texture is inconsistent and the wings are usually soaked in sauce. It pisses me off every time when I add special instructions for my order and they never follow them. For our dinner we ordered the following: - Large order of soy garlic wings, (15 wings and 15 drumettes = 30 pieces) - Japchea - Salmon avocado ball - Pickled daikon is complimentary There was enough staff this evening to process our order. Our food came out in less than ten minutes. First our chicken came out first. A nice presentation with the wings and drumettes on separate sides. They were huge pieces, not no itty-bitty ones. Just as my favorite location in Sunnyvale, the chicken the same exact way. Well, it is a franchise business! Crispy on the outside and tender & juicy in the inside. All coated nicely with the soy garlic sauce. Next was the order of the japchae. All mixed with glass noodles, carrots, beef, sesame seeds, mushrooms, onions, and spinach. Everything tasted great. The beef was tender. The only thing that would have made the japache better is more glass noodles, which it lacked. Lastly, the Salmon avocado ball. I had a chance to try this at Bonchon in Boston and fell in love with it. If you've never had it, I REALLY recommend it! The tasty concoction is made up of crab meat and avocado all wrapped in seared salmon. There's fish roe included with it, but you can request to not add it. Also it is topped with mayonnaise, and unagi sauce, and tempura bits. The combination of flavors are explainable and beyond amazing! The fish and crab meat were very tender. The tempura bits gave the dish a much needed crunch. All the staff members were very attentive and helpful. The owner was very nice and accommodating with our table. Should have known better not to order from this location! Not even close to the soy glaze chicken I've tasted million times from other chains. This is by far the worst fried chicken with oversized over battered and wet soggy I've ever had. The worst part is that it came packed in a tin foiled so it's all soggy after we picked up. WELCOME TO NEWARK, BONCHON!! I have been waiting and drooling in anticipation of the day that you would open, and now here you are. At last. In all your Korean fried chicken glory. Not gonna lie. I have some pretty intense cravings for Bonchon sometimes. So of course, when I heard that they were opening a branch in Newark, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. And I, of course, am not the only one eyeing this place, so when you get here, expect a pretty long wait time; longer if you come during peak meal hours. The nice thing is, though, that you can call in and put your name down on the waiting list. They'll give you an estimated wait time, and they'll call you when your table is close to being ready to ensure that you're close by. (Or you can just order take out.) My family and I came here on a Friday night around 7PM. My brother-in-law had called in about 45 minutes before, so when we got there, we were pretty much next on the list. (There was a slight hiccup in communication, but we got it solved.) The place itself is spacious; you definitely won't feel like you're intruding on your neighbor's meal. There's also a bar area, and they have happy hour from 3PM-6PM for drinks. We sat down and began drooling over the scrumptious looking pictures on the menu. Although we were tempted by nearly everything, we had one mission and one mission only: fried chicken. Between the 7 of us who were there, we decided that two large combo orders would be sufficient. Each large combo comes with 15 wings and 8 drumsticks, and you can get one or two flavors. (They only have soy garlic and half & half (soy garlic & spicy) here, so getting two flavors is pretty much getting everything.) We got one large half & half and the other was just soy garlic -- had to be mostly kid-friendly flavors for the 3-year-old at the table. The chicken came out in heaps and we dug in. It was just as I remembered it -- crispy fried on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. I do wish that they did some different flavors; I started getting a little tired of the soy garlic by the end. Being the monsters that we are, we polished everything off, including the pickled radishes (and they were kind enough to bring some extra out for us since we had so many people). This location has been long anticipated... and I was finally glad that it was open! I haven't had Bonchon in a long time, but it's cuz it's a trek to get to sunnyvale sometimes. Upon stepping in, like all the new places, it's very hipster/trendy with wall art. I was surprised that they have a 10 seater bar with multiple tv screens throughout, which was great since the Warriors were playing. We came in on a Sunday at around 6:30ish and we were seated immediately. We were at a 2 seater table, but the table next to us was also fairly close... as in I can hear their full on conversations and her feelings about the food she was eating. We ordered the Large Combo half/half with pickled daikon, seasoned fries, and the salmon avacado ball. Large Combo Half/Half : The chicken was good. Flavorful, the spicy chicken had a good kick, but tastes a little different than I remember from the sunnyvale location. Docked a star because our daikon came out in frozen chunks... Seasoned Fries: Good, worth the $6.95, no probably not. The fries were good, but could use more seasoning. Salmon Avacado Ball: Very saucy, not sure I tasted much of the Salmon. The ball in pictures looks huge, but I want to say it's smaller than a tennis ball. The servers were attentive, and I was surprised that they all had mics to communicate with each other (the location really isn't that big). Our food came out, I had a dirty fork and no plates. Our team of 6 came in slightly hungry and wanted an order of 30 wings which would have cost $30.95 (20 spicy and 10 non-spicy) was told no can do on the split of flavors...Hummm...ok so we had to split our flavor order and ordered a small of 10 wings non spicy and a medium order of 20 spicy- the split ordering allowed them to charge us a few more bucks for each order, I guess their management is not very flexible. Order comes out and the small order has 9 pieces and the medium comes out with 15 pieces. There was a mixture of legs and wings? So when we asked the waiter, he apparently thought we wanted he combo order which would have adjusted our quantity...Hummm...we ordered using quantity but I guess that went out the window during the ordering process. Our server was nice, we think he felt bad on the order so he brought over 2 bowls of steam rice comps on the house... Spicy chicken was ok, it has a tiny kick to it, the soy garlic chicken was plain, you couldn't taste the garlic at all. We also ordered Japchae $13.95 (not very good and was smaller than your usual size) and a side of kimchi $2.50 and seasoned fries $6.95. Hoping that was a one-time fluke, we DoorDashed from Bonchon again. Tonight, we dealt with spoiled Kimchi Coleslaw with that acidic, sour taste and chicken that once again, tasted like refried, day old chicken. Why have I waited so long to try this? When I think of good chicken wings usually my top places are Fire Wings, BWW, etc. But after trying Bonchon I think this has become the winner of chicken wing places. Ordered the half and half wings (soy garlic and spicy) with a side of seasoned fries. The wings were large, crispy, and flavorful. Normally an order of 20 piece wings is easy to finish between a couple of people, but these wings were so large that we actually had leftovers! Also ordered the peach soju and beer to accompany the meal, and the peach soju was worth every dollar. It was served in a large glass, was ice cold, and is probably one of the better sojus I've had. So very disappointed with my experience here. I came on a Saturday for to-go lunch to find that the one person standing behind the cash register was the cook (the ONE cashier was a no show). The cook had no idea how to turn on the lights or the cash register so he couldn't take any sort of credit card payment. The woman before me was able to get her order because she had cash, but unfortunately for me, I didn't. The cook, who wasn't wearing a mask, ensured me that the cashier will show up in five minutes. Oh, as a side note, the other cook inside the kitchen cooking also didn't wear a mask. The cashier didn't arrive after 15 minutes, so he decided to call his manager to ask him how to handle my order. His manager asked him to take a picture of my credit card with his personal cell phone, give me my food, and record the transaction later. Who in the right mind would allow a stranger to take a picture of their credit card? Left right away as I felt uncomfortable and disgusted by their sanitation. Will not be returning. They need to have more accountability measures placed if they want customers. read more

Came on a Sunday afternoon, and despite the amount of customers, there was still a lot of tables. We got seated right away, and it seemed like there were only 2 waitresses. Our food came out within 10 minutes, and we ordered 20 wings (half spicy and half soy garlic) along with tteokbokki (~$12). The total ended up being ~$40 without tip. I was expecting the wings to be around the same size as wing stop, but these were pretty big. The spicy wings were flavorful, and I didn't think it was spicy but my friends thought it was the perfect amount of spiciness. I wasn't a fan of the soy garlic. There wasn't enough sauce added and it just lacked a lot of flavor. They also served a side of radish for the chicken wings, and you can ask for other condiments (we asked for ranch). After eating a lot of them, we started getting tired of all the batter. We just wanted to eat the chicken itself (w/ sauce), but there was way too batter and i'm sure that's why the chicken looked so big. The tteokbokki was decent, not the worse nor the best. There wasn't much rice cakes in the dish, and the portion size was smaller than I expected. I liked that it was very cheesy (we asked for the mozarella on the side so we could control the amount), and that they included fish cakes. They also had 2 pieces of japchae wrapped in seaweed that's deep fried. I think this was overpriced, especially for how little they gave. All my friends are telling me that the Sunnyvale Bonchon location is the move, and the Yelp reviews for that store seem to support this (I would give this Bonchon 3.5 stars if I could). For our party of 6, we got the half spicy and half soy garlic flavor wings (a large order of 30 pieces and a small order of 10 pieces), as well as the house fried rice (with kimchi and bacon) and a pitcher of Sapporo. Definitely more than enough food, especially considering that the wings are pretty decently sized. Overall, the food wasn't bad, but I also wasn't blown away by it. The chicken could've been more tender, and the breading could've been crispier. Our servers were great though, and our overall experience was decent. BONBONCHONONON I've had Bonchon before and their Newark location was first of all, a PAIN in my butt to find. I tried using google maps (since I am not familiar with the area) and google maps took me to a hotel?! I wasn't sure why google maps kept redirecting me there but it was weird. Now onto the food! I ordered the 30 piece chicken with garlic and the food to me was fine. The side of fries that I got on the other hand was disappointing. It was not fresh and I could tell they were freezer fries. The service on the other hand was actually quite good. This location is a lot smaller than the other locations I've been to in the south bay, but the chicken was still good in my opinion. I've tried many different locations of Bonchon and this place was so far the best. I ordered 10 pieces of chicken, a Korean spicy rice cake, and a pork bun (sorry no photos for the pork bun) I personally find this place has the right amount of sauce for the chicken as it wasn't too salty but good. The rice cake was amazing and those two pieces of seaweed rolls add a lot to it. Under new management, I am positive that their taste and quality of food have gotten even better somehow, plus the owner Kim is really kind and caring for their customers. Finally! Soft opening and already long lines. This is not a big place so expect to wait. Go for the bar for quicker seating. Happy hour is between 5-7pm with a dollar off on draft beers. This is a hodgepodge of Asian cuisine: shumai, takoyaki, Korean tacos, etc. Make sure you get the chicken wings (best with the drumsticks combo)! Best consistincy/crunch of wings ever. Sauce is good. Staff is friendly. Really clean bathrooms. Great pot stickers. Fries are good I'm a big fan of garlic fries, but I didn't feel their parmasean garlic fries were worth the steep price, we won't order those again. My son loves the pickled jicama side. I'm incredibly sadden how much Bon Chon's quality has deminished over the years. They were my favorite korean fried chicken place when I first had it, but their quality, customer service, and bon chon is just not there anymore. This experience has definitely made me decide to finally stop trying to give Bon Chon a chance. The past 4 experience has been worse and worse.. First of all, their prices are messed up and confusing. They have 3 different prices written on their website, togo menu, and in store. Then, they charged us wrong for our order and on top of that, we ordered pickled radish and emphasized it and we got home and were given coleslaw.
