My favorite Korean fried chicken and fries in the area so far. I go to bonchon at least once every two months. I love the wings and plain fries. I always find the whole chicken bits and nuggets to be too oily or too salty, but the wings always hit. The fries are crispy and light while hot and fluffy in the middle. We've also tried the Japchae which was amazing. I recommend eating there or soon after picking up to get maximum crispy. The inside is a little loud, but perfect for losing yourself in a mountain of chicken. Be wary with the spicy sauce options, because sometimes it hits like gochujang and sometimes it hits like a habanero. Maybe it depends on the chef that day? Either way, always tasty. read more

I'm giving 4 stars because the food is so good, but I would give 3.5 if possible. This is my first time experiencing bad customer service here, but the food is always solid. I called prior to arriving at the restaurant to let them know I had a big party and asked if that was okay. They said that it was no problem. When me and my friends came in, we were seated right away, but it took us a bit of time to figure out what we wanted to order or how we wanted to share, so that we would not have to split the bill. (BTW They can only split it into 3 bills per party.) Our first waitress came up to us twice in the span of 5 minutes. We said we still needed a few more minutes, but I appreciate how tentative she was. A different waitress came up to us and asked if we were ready to order, but this time she rolled her eyes at us and asked "Are you ready to order?" She sounded very annoyed, but it had only been about 5-8 minutes since we had been seated. The girl was not even our initial waitress, after she took our order she clocked out and left shortly after. When she left, me and my friends were very confused about her behavior. I don't know if she just had a bad day, but that's STILL NOT an excuse to be unkind to people. It killed my vibe for a bit. This is probably one of my worst customer service experiences, but the food from this place is so good. Our first waitress was super sweet, it was just that one girl who rolled her eyes that gave us a bad impression. I was originally checking DoorDash to see if 7/11 was in there and Bonchon showed up displaying wings. I couldn't resist so I ordered the Medium Soy Garlic wings. Decent amount for the price. I'm impressed because I didn't expect much. I have to order again because the wings were out of this world. This could also be dangerous for my wallet because with this lockdown means I will want to eat more so to stretch food I may just get lazier and keep ordering. But when I went to dine indoor all the tables were spaced out even MORE than 6ft apart. Temperatures are taken upon arrival. And the tables are cleaned and wiped down in between guests! They have a student discount day and ironically me and my friend forgot to use it even tho we got SO excited when we saw the flyer outside with the daily specials and us so happening to arrive on the day where they do student discounts LOL. Anyways the fries here are good and crispy! The chicken strips are to dieeee for. FYI, I was told, that the boneless chicken here is frozen whereas the strips aren't. So idk about you but I'd rather order fresh chicken LOL. The chicken was sooo good. But tbh the spicy was tooo spicy for me. On Saturday Bryan suggested that we go to Bonchon after our workout (I know counter productive) and I was so excited I texted my bestie Eddie. Bonchon is located right next to my favorite Korean BBQ spot, I put my name on the list as soon as it was clear to do so, there were only 2 other names before ours. We waited at least 10 minutes which was great because Edi decided he would hop out of bed to join us. The host sat us at a 4 top in front of the register and they provided us water as soon as we were sat. We had no idea who our server was sat there for a while before anyone even came by. Edi finally found parking and joined us at this point Bryan and I already knew what we wanted and Edi basically knew too, he reviews the menu online like me. Bryan got a beer and Edi and I shared a bottle of strawberry soju, for food we shared a order of pork belly buns and bulgogi fried rice while ordering our own signature fried chicken. I opted for the small combo which is 4 chicken wings and 2 chicken legs, I also did half and half soy garlic and sweet crunch. Edi ordered all wings and Bryan ordered boneless wings. The soju was pretty strong and had me a little tipsy throughout lunch. Pork Belly Buns - 3/4 Thick slice of tender pork belly and the bun is so soft and delicious, but too much slaw, order does come with 3 buns so perfect for sharing our keeping all to yourself. We asked for the most mild we could get the dish and was warned that it would still have some heat to it, which it did but still was so good. The crispy pork belly buns were amazing. I live the texture of the bun and it went nicely with the crisped pork. The Fried Shrimp Shumai was different-a but mushy in the inside and tasted like imitation crab meat more than shrimp. We're not from the area so my girlfriend and I drove an hour away just to get some good Korean chicken. About an hour after we left, my girlfriend had symptoms of food poisoning. First time I ever had Bonchon was in NY in 2007. How excited was I when Bonchons started to open up in Southern California? Best of all, we have one here in San Diego!! We've only eaten at the SD location twice before the pandemic. Since then, we have been content to order take-out and enjoy it at home. Soy garlic is our family favorite. My little one prefers drumsticks, and my husband and I prefer wings. They pair nicely with pickled daikon radish and. Bowl of steaming white rice. (I also prefer to dip the chicken in thousand island dressing, which we keep handy at home). Last week, my in-laws came for a visit. We added spicy chicken to our order and takoyaki. I cannot handle heat, so I cannot give my review of it, but my in-laws who love spice said it was a bit more spicy than they were used to. An order of takoyaki comes with 6 pieces. They kept the sauces separate so it is not soggy by the time it arrives at your house. Each piece is larger than what I usually see, maybe 3-4 bites? I don't think we will order them again because inside that large ball of batter was a single piece of octopus. With 15 wings and 8 drumsticks, the large combo is indeed large. The drumsticks are absolutely huge. The large combo can easily feed 4-5 people if you're only ordering wings. The tteokbokki was lacking in taste for me but the rice cakes were well cooked and there is a generous serving of cheese. Came here on a Sunday night and waited about 20 minutes for our table. What we ordered: Spicy Wings: a good kick with some heat that wasn't too overwhelming Soy Garlic: our favorite out of the two that was the perfect blend of sweet and savory...not too sweet which I appreciated. Both were absolutely cooked to perfection, super crispy and juicy on the inside. I wish we ordered more wings! We also ordered their Bacon Kimchee Fried Rice which was fantastic! So much great kimchee flavor with bits of bacon scattered throughout. I really enjoyed this dish and it was pretty hefty in portion size. They have several lunch specials-- my friend and I split a fried chicken combo, which was half spicy soy garlic and half something not spicy lol, seasoned fries, bulgogi tacos and bao buns-- guess we were hungry lmao. The wings were delicious, I really don't know how they get the skin so crispy and it's not completely covered in batter and the sauce was great, both of them. And the spicy snuck up on you. You seriously can taste it! Soda - can only... no refills - damn. It's okay cause it's free if you check in. Make sure to check as this may go away soon. Beer- I didn't have any this visit but they do have a good selection based on what I saw on tap. Sake- they have a few choices. Service- Surprisingly, service was great! Josh and a few other guys were friendly and actually did their job unlike other places that I have been to, where they just check out unassuming single ladies and try to get their number - yes this still happens. Came here on a weekday, just before 3pm.. perfect time, in my opinion! There was plenty of parking, the restaurant was empty besides a few other customers, and still in time for their lunch specials. We ordered 8pc wings (soy) with rice and another with their pickled daikon radish. Lunch price saves you $2, I'll take it! Also on their lunch menu, I ordered their bibimbap with tofu. Our table ordered fries as well.. Everything was pretty good.. the chicken is definitely the star though. 8 pcs is definitely more than enough. If you can handle spice, I'd recommend getting "half & half", just for that change in flavor. I heard their spicy is pretty hot, and I can only handle a little spice, so we got all soy garlic. The chicken arrived hot, super crispy, juicy meat, and a very rich glaze. Asians eat their wings with rice, so that's cool. But try it with their daikon radish, complements the saltiness of the chicken. The French fries were super crispy and just as addicting as the chicken wings. The bibimbap came sizzling and was a very generous size. It comes lightly seasoned with a sauce packet on the side. I only used about half of the packet, not wanting it to be too salty. Bonchon lived up to all of my Korean fried chicken expectations. There are a handful of places in San Diego with Korean fried chicken and, for some reason, I haven't been to any. Just recently, some friends and I went for dinner and I was not disappointed at all. Amongst the three of us, we ordered the medium half soy garlic/half spicy chicken wings (extra sauce and extra crispy). They "forewarned" us that since the chicken is already crispy, extra crispy may dry it out. It did not dry the chicken out even the least! We also ordered the pork buns, French fries, and pineapple soju (new and not on the menu yet). From first bite, I knew I was in love. Korean fried chicken is amazing! I especially liked the soy garlic wings. Everything we ordered was crisp to perfection and flavorful. Also, don't forget to check-in for a free soda! Our waiter (I do not know his name but he had glasses) was very attentive and polite! My friend and I were waiting for the third person and he asked us if we were waiting to order at least five times. Then once our friend met us, he had just been sitting for at least five minutes, and the waiter asked us two more times if we were ready. It wasn't until 10 asks later that we were actually ready. But he assured us that he wanted to let us know that he didn't forget about and that he was prioritizing us, which was really sweet! The first spicy piece was good, but then the fire ignites in your mouth like Agent Orange napalm...if you're a spice wimp, or even a mild spicy person, stick with the traditional delicious Korean Soy Garlic sauce: sweet, savory, salty, and sensational. $24 for 16 Chicken strips, seems a bit expensive but it's probably enough for 4 people, assuming you get some extras. $2 for a bowl of white rice, a ripoff. $11 Bulgogi beef fried rice. Good stuff! Though the portion could've been a bit larger. We showed up before 6pm on a Sunday, and were seated immediately. Service was extraordinarily friendly from our body building beast of a waiter. The fried chicken is made fresh so it takes a while to come out, but the fun and funky K-pop music videos will keep you entertained before and during dinner. They sat us quickly, got our food out quickly, refilled our waters, and were just on top of everything. I was very impressed with their amazing service. I'm still going to give 5 stars to Bon Chon, even though I think Cross Street's wings are better tasting. As of this writing, Bon Chon is less expensive by at least $2 for lunch and you get a small side too. Wings are good but lukewarm (not temperature hot like Cross Street), not as big, and not as fried (not as much crispy batter), less oily, and had sweet, soy garlic and hot (3 flavors only whereas Cross Street has 7 or 8 flavors). On the plus side for Bon Chon is that the menu has more variety of different foods, lots of non-fried foods, and great pictures, plus it's less crowded. We also ordered bibop but I recommend you just get the meat dish by itself b/c it's just too much rice as filler. read more
