Bonchon Korean Fried Chicken is a franchise Korean restaurant located by down town San Leandro. This San Leandro branch just recently soft opened and I've been twice. During both trips, Bonchon consistently had disappointing service with average food. On my first trip, I waited thirty minutes for my food and the restaurant was barely occupied. On my second trip, the service was much faster, they were just a lot less personable. Again, the place was near empty during my second trip. So, it's obvious that their forte is not service. To note, Bonchon has a really well made menu with very clear pictures and descriptions. This is helpful as their food comes completely as shown on the menu. Having said that, the food is pretty average. It's not bad but it's not great either. I had their wings, their caesar salad with crispy chicken, and their pork buns. The spicy flavor for the wings was really hot and the soy sauce flavor was as expected. The caesar salad was good with the caveat that they use honey mustard for the dressing. And the pork buns, they were forgettable at best. Food wise, it was okay overall with somewhat generous servings, especially for the wings. Pricing wise, it was average with around $15 - $20 spend per person. In terms of location, Bonchon is located towards the north end a down town San Leandro strip mall. The restaurant was well designed and was well kept. There was more than enough parking by the restaurant and outside a Friday night, the place doesn't have huge wait times. The only downside are the folks hanging out outside. They tend to disturb folks walking along. Overall, Bonchon gets an I've experienced better two stars. They have a clean and well kept restaurant. There are no issues parking wise and the location is prime by down town San Leandro. Outside the annoyance to folks begging, they place is generally well kept and maintained. However, the food is average and they have near horrible service. So, the tally across these components gets Bonchon a fair two and half stars rounded down to two. read more

Homestly i have no idea what happened this bonchon. I ordered steam white rice and if i didn't look in my bag to check were it was i would have not gotten my white rice and my money taken away. The chicken strips are dry ,burnt etc. but i will not be coming here again. The service is slow as well they said my order would be down in 15 minutes i went in after 15 minutes and they said 15 more minutes. I was just sitting in my car for half an hour for my food. BUSINESS ETIQUETTE 0/10 I have never been more tempted to call the board of health, the city, the better business bureau, and the local news. When it comes to food safety and sanitation I am hyper-vigilant these days. The spread of disease is REAL, and the lack of personal hygiene practices are REAL, therefore, I feel obligated to protect myself and communicate to others when I see cause for REAL concern. I went to this establishment on Friday June 14, 2019, after an enthusiastic recommendation from a very dear set of friends earlier that day. Needless to say I was excited. We went in a little before 3pm, right after the lunch menu pricing expired. The place appeared clean and trendy. My daughter and I had the pick of nearly any seat since the place was fairly empty. We ordered potstickers and popcorn shrimp. I was underwhelmed by both items, ditto for the fountain drinks with mere traces of carbonation. My daughter found the food okay so she filled up on it, but I opted not to order anything else. I'm so glad I followed my mind and decided not to risk it. The mediocrity of the consumables became the least of my concerns upon observing our server touching his hair and face. At first I did my best to keep from cringing and overreacting, but once I witnessed the server rubbing his eyes and nose (and getting his hands close to his mouth) I became completely uncomfortable with his behavior. This unacceptable display was ineptly right out in the open. I was feverishly compelled to call for a manager. The staff questioned me about the nature of my request to speak to someone which is where things really began to fall apart especially when the server touching himself said he wasn't serving food! Food or beverages being handed to customers are the same thing. Here's a brief outline of the back and forth that ensued. First, I was told that the management was busy with something. I said I'll wait. The bill was placed on the table. I ignored the bill. Second, the higher up completely refused to come out. I could leave a note. NOTE? I absolutely refused to leave a NOTE. What type of restaurant worth its salt denies a patron asking for management? None. Ever. Third, I refused to leave until the manager personally appeared. No response. Fourth, I said if they don't come out, I'll leave without paying (most establishments want to be paid, right?). Still no leadership, instead management said pay or they'd call the POLICE. I said call them and I sent my daughter to the car to protect her just in case something calm escalated. They called the police. The police came immediately. Fifth, the police questioned the OWNER (this is the person who repeatedly refused to come forward) and he still didn't come out. Instead a police officer and I spoke very reasonably, he offered some suggestions and questioned me about paying. The issue had zero to do with paying for food that we clearly ate, my threat to refuse payment was for leverage and I never complained about the food. The problem I had was the apparent lack of training resulting in poor health and sanitation practices and the resulting egregious customer service. From the top down the overall lack of care and professionalism was astounding. My initial request was premised on making management aware of the hygiene issue exclusively, and was honestly well intended. The officer was hesitant about the owner's willingness to come forward, WHAT he was going to call the police and then deny a law enforcement agent's suggestion to meet me, the "offender"?!? Of course not! He finally came out. RESPONSE: An acute kidney stone issue (which is why he was in his car when the police arrived??) along with the common insult of another customer the day before pulling a stunt. Whatever happened (or didn't happen) between the restaurant and anyone else at anytime had nothing to do with me. My subsequent question was why not simply say you're ill and send out a business card? No business card disbursements because I might have been a solicitor (telemarketer per his description) ??? Do solicitors tote around their children and sit down to eat and then ask for the manager's card for future soliciting? The maundering continued... There were plenty of excuses for the four time refusal to speak to me and nothing sounded worthy of police involvement. There were a couple of I'm sorries between nullifying excuses. Something that could have been handled in two minutes took 45 minutes to an hour. Before the police imposed an end to the conversation the owner offered a refund/cancellation of the charge to my credit card. The damage was done once the police were called. No one deserves this type of blind mistreatment. Of all the businesses I patronize I've never experienced such outrageous treatment. read more

I ordered the bulgogi sliders (I was told they do NOT mix chicken and bulgogi sliders!) and found the taste to be like cucumbers in mayonnaise. Bland. This was my first time eating Bonchon and the food exceeded my expectations! The Korean tacos with bulgogi were extremely savory and satiating. My friend and I split the small combo and did half sweet chili and half soy garlic. The outside was crispy and inside tender. Our waiter server, Annie, was friendly and helpful throughout our entire ordering process, answering any questions we had. So I go into the restaurant to order the three flavor combo that they were advertising only to find out that it was a limited time only, Ok that's fine I go to order the 30 piece which is 35$ plus tax for just the chicken wings no fries just chicken so that I can get all three flavors. Now when they first opened they only had two flavors so getting the half and half special wasn't a issue, but now you have three flavors so it's only right to offer a three flavor special. Right!? No wrong if you buy 30 chicken wings you only can get two flavors!! Wth!! I'm outraged!! I was willing to pay almost 50$ for some chicken wings but instead walked away empty handed and upset because nobody thought to put the three flavor special on the menu. I like the chicken but I just had a pretty bad experience at the San Leandro Bonchan. We usually order soy garlic wings. In the passed I've tried to request flats instead of drumettes, but they always say that they can't do it and say that it will be a mixture. Usually the order comes split with half flats and half drumettes, which I usually just deal with the drumettes. Today my son and I ordered a 20 piece soy garlic wings. When it come to our table it was 16 drumettes! Smh. I brought up my issue with the server and she politely apologized but did not offer any type of solution. So now we're stuck with having to eat a lunch that we are totally not satisfied with. Ultimately if you like flats, or you like drumettes, it doesn't matter! You are going to get what you get. You can't even request that the mixture of wings are even between drumettes and flats. We like flats and really dislike drumettes and order came with 16 out of 20 drumettes! I am a small business owner in San Leandro and take pride in making sure our customer service goes above and beyond taking care of customers who choose to spend their money with us. This place is a cool dine in spot. As far as DoorDash, it's at your own risk. Pretty sure we were sent some day old; cold reheated wings.
