This has been a favorite place for myself, family and friends since they first opened almost 20 years ago. After last evening's experience, I'll never go back. I met a close friend for a late dinner. We'd planned our visit for weeks; she traveled from Charlottesville for the occasion. The dining room was empty and we were enjoying our time in a booth next to the window and had been there for about 30 minutes. All was fine until my bench seat began bouncing up and down to the vigorous kicks of a small child seated directly behind me. I turned around several times and smiled politely at the large family that had just been seated in the adjacent booth. The kicker continued unabated. I discretely summoned the waiter who scurried away to summon a manager. Five or ten more minutes passed until the purported manager, who was not attired as the normal Bonefish managers are, but instead was scruffy and in a wrinkled casual shirt. He asked if we wanted to be moved. When we declined, stated that we were seated first and the restaurant was full of empty tables, any which of which could have accommodated the larger party seated when we were eating, he, too scurried away to the kitchen and didn't return until our waiter had cleared out plates. Within our earshot, he told the other party that we were complaining about them. Naturally, they became quite curious. Feeling unwelcome and a bit uncomfortable because the larger table included at least three men, we made our way hurriedly out of the restaurant. No representatives of Bonefish approached us at any time, even though we stopped to provide the hostess with the same information included in this review and we lingered outside to say our goodbyes. I've said more than enough. Goodbye favorite watering hole and celebration spot. I wont return to or recommend any of the restaurants in your now huge and un-customer focused corporate conglomerate. read more

Love love love their bang bang shrimp. Although, I haven't been here in a while and I feel like the price may have gone up for it a dollar or two and the amount has gotten smaller :( But it's still good! The waitress at the bar was super nice. She gave her honest opinions when we asked about certain menu items. She didn't give the typical "oh, everything in our restaurant is good!" This last time I ordered the shrimp pad thai. It was good, but there was something missing in my opinion. It didn't taste like when you order it at a thai restaurant. I want to say it was probably missing the bean sprouts and also something in the seasoning. Wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. My friend ordered the lobster bisque and lobster grilled cheese. The grilled cheese had chunks of lobster in it and that was very good. I loved how the cheese pulled apart in each bite and the bread wasn't overwhelming with butter. The bisque was smooth and flavorful. I would recommend this simple, but delicious dish! read more

As is typical of most similar establishments, their appetizers were great and the entrees terrible! We had reservations for Friday night dinner and the place was kind of empty. We were seated right away and our server was absolutely awesome. I had the pomegranate martini which was yummy, but a lot of sugar water and not enough alcohol lol. The watermelon martini was also good. The well advertised bang bang shrimp was good - but then you can fry a piece of shoe leather and drown it in mayo and it will taste great, lol!! The mussel were delicious - garlicky and buttery, just perfectly seasoned and awesome! For the entree, we split the crab crusted halibut and it was just bad - it was dry, not enough crab and not well made. The garlic potato mash was a joke - barely any garlic and just super bland. the Crab fried rice side was great - it disappeared super fast at the table :) All in all, our server made it a better experience than it should have been by regaling us with stories and opinions on movies, so kudos to him for that. 3.5 star review! I went here after the Christmas holiday (12/29), but still the winter break period. It was a Monday yet very busy! The only reason why I wouldn't give it a 5-star is because of the pricing compared to the food. We got the bang bang shrimp appetizer and it was good. I'm usually not a shrimp fan, but the flavoring was great. The portion size was plenty-- oh and there's bread in the beginning too so just remember that when you're ordering too. The bread tasted good especially with the olive oil combo sauces they gave. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't freshly out of the oven, only lukewarm. I know it would have been better even at least just warm. I got the wild mahi mahi--- at a seafood restaurant, gotta try the wood grilled fish! Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. It was kinda dry and the one at Coastal Flats I had a week before this was better. I know Bonefish is supposed to be a "higher class" restaurant than Coastal Flats so super disappointed about the fish. I was happy that you get your choice of sides and comes with the topping. I asked the waiter for a suggestion and got the lime/tomato/garlic one. I should have gone with the mango salsa. I still gave it a 3.5-star because my friend got a meal she liked--The ahi tuna bowl and the service was pretty on-point. Impromptu visit on a Sunday evening, AWESOME decision!! Hopped on board for the meal for 2 for $49. 1st an app of Bang-Bang shrimp, followed by choice of salads (very good sized), then 3 sides and 4 seafood selections all with delicious finishes! Our waiter Matt, explained all the entrees and what they entailed expertly. We had plans to bring home the leftovers, but NOPE we ate every single bite! I usually go to the Bonefish in Maryland (Kentlands), but this location is a similar setup (seems slightly smaller), and food is just as good. Their fish is good of course, but I want to mention the fillet mignon is very good for a non-steak place. When my husband ordered it I cautioned him this is a seafood place, maybe stay away from steak. But he didn't listen (as usual), and surprisingly, they cooked the steak just as my husband asked, and he said it was very good. I love their trout in the asian sauce. Drinks are always good as well. I went for scallops & shrimp with Mango salsa and hit quite a bit of meat for my money. It came with two sides, so I had the buttery and delicious garlic whipped potatoes and the tasty green beans. All good, and arrived in a timely manner. I also started with a side house salad, loved it! The only thing that wasn't my favorite was the macadamia nut brownie for dessert. Then when my sirloin was rare when ordered medium well, they re-fired the previously cut sirloin and served it back to me (health code violation). Waitress argued again how it wasn't her fault and offered nothing while a new steak was fired. First and last time at this location. The manager was non-existent until she dropped off the sirloin a second time and when my date tried to ask who in the kitchen thought it was a good idea to have a health code violation, she could not leave fast enough. Bonefish WAS one of my favorite chain restaurants. I hadn't gone in a long time and decided to stop by to enjoy a meal at this location. The waiter was nice and the service was prompt, however, the food fell wayyyy below my expectations. Not the restaurant I remember a couple of years ago. This is not their fault, but the Saucy Shrimp and Porkchops are no longer on the menu. Bummer! The good thing is that the chef made it for me anyway - but it still doesn't taste like the original and the shrimp were a little under cooked. My friend ordered the Cod Imperial ($22) and it was just ok - something was off. The potatoes au gratin were dry and the waiter replaced them with garlic mash potatoes that were gritty. Wife and I were in the mood for seafood and we had a coupon to get an entree free with the purchase of an entree. While we've been to the Centreville location several times, this was our first visit to the Fairfax one. Everything was delicious! We ordered a watermelon martini (for the wife) and it was actually really good! If I'm going to drink a foo-foo drink, I at least want to taste the advertised fruit instead of pure sugar, and this drink was a perfect blend of watermelon with a slight hint of alcohol. The fresh baked bread is amazing. Crisp on the outside, warm and soft on the inside...talk about self control to not eat everything in one gulp! We ordered the sashimi appetizer and were pleasantly surprised with the size of the dish. It was a great plate of tuna, greens and siracha drizzle. My wife ordered the scallops and I ordered the crusted haddock. Both dishes were perfectly cooked, flavorful and filling. The thing I appreciate is that there are plenty of wild caught fish to choose from with only a couple fish being farm raised. There aren't many places that offer such a wide variety of seafood choices, and the fact that Bonefish is aware of how much better wild caught fish is makes me have it at the top of my seafood list! read more

Then we had tilapia with the mango salsa and my wife had the scallops and shrimp with some lemon sauce. They were decent. I definitely liked the mango salsa better than that lemon one. Great ambience and great food! I was very close to giving a five star yet for the price, there was one item that I noticed. First, the interior and service was great. I wasn't aware that they have white table clothes and went straight from work so I'm not sure if I was up to the dress code if there was one. The server was welcoming and went through the menu clearly and answered all my questions. My friend had the sea bass with artichoke. I didn't get to try it but he loved it and it looked delicious. I had the grilled salmon which had great flavor and crust however, the meat inside was pretty dry. It might be because it was grilled (charcoal?) but unfortunately I did not enjoy it especially for the price. I will try again soon and hope to have a better juicy salmon! read more

Terrible. My husband and I had our food delivered through UberEats this evening, and it's a shame we couldn't send the food back. We both had the cod imperial. The fish was overcooked and the sauce was over powered by lemon and it was watery. There was no real flavor in it either. No salt, no pepper. Just plain, rubbery fish with deviled crab and shrimp on top. We both also ordered a seasonal vegetable medley as a side and it was... broccoli. Just overcooked, watery broccoli. My husband also ordered french fries which he did not receive, and in lieu of french fries was just more mushy broccoli. Bonefish used to be one of my favorite chains, but if this is what they are now they have lost me as a customer for good. This food was a disgusting, heated mess. Okay, so order the right things and the food here is really excellent. Great calamari to start with and the tempura tuna sashimi is a star - great tuna sashimi taste. The wood grilled rainbow trout (not the Parmesan crusted, but get the plain grilled one) is fresh and delicious, and the whipped potatoes are satisfying. Signature pasta is very good. The key lime pie is the best on the dessert menu. Service is very good and our waitress was very attentive and timely. Ambience during the weekend is nice - families, couples, and friends and the place was quite busy but not overly crowded. And the best part - price is just right for a good seafood dinner at this nice restaurant with good portions. Good bread too. And the blackberry smash drink. Among the not-so-good: The menus we got (remember, this is 12:30 on Mother's day) had no breakfast items. This was supposed to be brunch. Now, none of us really cared but I am sure other people wanted breakfast, not lunch. Mrs. W's soft-shell crab/crabcake special entree: Just meh. Her au gratin potatoes were undercooked and watery. As I am not much of a seafood lover, I have avoided going to Bonefish Grill for years despite its close proximity to my home. Now having tried it out for the first time (albeit for a non-seafood item) I should have kept walking. First off the free bread to start things off was cold, relatively hard and old, and not particularly tasty. The pesto you can dip it in was good, but it is hard to ruin that (and I would have preferred butter). Next up is the main event, the Wagyu Burger. While the meat was high quality, the burger was a complete let-down as it was prepared super-well done. We are not talking well done but still a bit juicy... no, I mean well done to the point of the burger being dry, lukewarm and puck-like. This would be bad in all cases, but it was particularly disappointing since I asked for it *rare*! They couldn't have gone more to the opposite of what I asked for. On the plus side, the bun the burger came on was high quality and fresh... and the real positive were the fries that came with the burger. They were perfect - the right consistency, crispiness and cooked properly in every way. I wish I could have just ordered those. All-in-all, this was a pricey meal that was prepared no better than one might expect from Burger King. With the Dogfish Head Pub in the same shopping center that prepares one of the best rare burgers I have ever tasted (the Rustic Burger) for 25% less cost, there is no reason to consider going here unless maybe for the seafood. read more

Chain, chain, chain (chain, chain, chain)...chain of food - seriously - I dated a guy once upon a time who thought it was "chain of food" and not "chain of fools" in Aretha Franklin's hit "Chain of Fools." It just goes to show that everyone is convinced that his or her interpretation is the correct one, and also why chain restaurants are a recipe for their own interpretation of success. Take Bonefish Grill, for example. Other than Red Lobster, what nationwide chain can you think of that does sit-down seafood as their main emphasis? That's a gold mine for Bonefish, since they're more upscale (IMHO) than Red Lobster (even though there aren't cheddar biscuits, I know), and they definitely appeal more widely for nicer diners with friends, family, and business associates. Still, I can't come to love Bonefish. If they want me to consider them as a notch above Red Lobster or to pay what they charge compared to a local seafood restaurant, they're going to need to start offering more sustainably-caught seafood options, including non-farm raised fish and other seafood. That, and educate their servers in what is "farm-raised" versus "wild-caught." It definitely matters to some people, in greater and greater quantity. I do, however, appreciate the calorie counts being listed on the menu, making it easier to make an informed decision if you're watching what you eat. That's a definite plus of chain restaurants and their adoption of full-disclosure (are you listening, Cheesecake Factory?!) Starting off with the hummus was a wise choice to stave off our "hanger", but I was disappointed that it was only served with greasy, grilled bread. Fresh veggies or a thin cracker would have been a nice option or addition. We also ordered the Maryland Crab Cakes in an attempt to stay local, and while they were just average, the remoulade dipping sauce was wonderful and had much more "bite" to it than I had expected. Entree-wise, the new "Bowls" menu piqued my interest, so I halfway-satiated a sushi/tuna craving with the Spicy Tuna Bowl, but even their version of "seared rare" was too cooked for my preference. Although the rice was of course tasty, the sweet chili sauce was disappointingly syrupy and sweet, as though it came directly from Chinese takeout sauce packets. My hubby ordered the Wild Mahi, as it was the only (according to the waitress) wild fish on the menu, and he was able to order it just plainly grilled and without oily/creamy sauces, so that was a nice touch. However, by a few hours later, he and I were both in a sodium-induced fiending for water - why is it that so many chains leave you with such a salty aftermath? I'm not at all opposed to BFG when it comes to chains, but if there is a local choice for seafood (especially wild-caught and sustainably-fished), I'll go there. read more

So I have been to Bonefish Grill many times before and I have always had good experiences.I like the food and I have always been lucky on service. It was my most recent experience that has caused me to write a 2 star review. Dinner was going smoothly enough, until my food arrived. I had ordered fish tacos and what arrived in front of me was their shrimp tacos. Now this normally would not be a huge deal to me, but I am allergic to shrimp. I had specifically said that to my server too when I placed my order. My server apologized and they rushed an order of fish tacos, which were good. But that was all they did. A manager did not come by and apologize. I was not looking for a handout or a free meal. But I would think that when a guest comes in stating a food allergy, staff would try to remember that. Bonefish? More like bait and switch!! I used to really enjoy going to Bonefish, but that time has passed. The last time we went to Bonefish I got terrible food poisoning from the Lily's Chicken. I was sick for three days. I put in a complaint on the experience, and I thought they had handled it professionally. I got a call back from the store manager, Ryan. He said the next time I come in with my husband, our whole meal would be on them. I thought this was a nice way to handle it given that I had gotten so sick. We went in to get that meal tonight, and again Ryan said that we should check out the menu and try some things and the meal would be on us. I got a steak and it was well done when I ordered a medium rare. I did not complain because I felt bad that I had already complained the the meal was already free. I should not have felt bad given the experience I had, but nonetheless, I did not feel like I should complain again. So time comes for the bill. The server said his manager told him to take of MY ENTREE, not the entire bill. I thought this had to be a mistake because this is not what Ryan had told us. Then Ryan came over to take our payment and checked the bill and did not say a thing. I was really pissed, but I just did not want to bring it up and have another conversation about their terrible service and their terrible meals. It would have been one thing if we had known going into it that it were only my entree he was taking of the bill, but he flat out lied. I feel cheated and deceived by this place. To think that I thought they were handling this professionally. It was added insult to injury when I ate a poorly cooked steak because I thought our dinner was "taken care of." I guess their idea of taking care of their customers is condoning food poisoning and nickel and diming the customers that they make terribly ill. Way to go Bonefish!! read more

I hadn't been to Bonefish Grill in quite some time, but we were meeting a friend for dinner after work and we thought would be a solid choice central to our locations. We sat at a booth in the bar area which was fine with me as I prefer the more casual atmosphere. We were greeted quickly by our server and offered drinks. Off to a pretty good start. I remembered how much I used to enjoy their bacon wrapped scallops so I was a bit disappointed that they were no longer a regular menu item. We asked our server when they were removed from the menu and he said the kitchen could still make them. An order of scallops and the Bang Bang shrimp it was. Our scallops arrived first and let me just state I never in my life have seen four smaller scallops. They were truly the size of marbles (the small ones, not the ones I used to call boulders). The flavor was good and there was plenty of chutney to fill the plate, but I could not get over the small scallops. They were just slightly overcooked as well which perhaps contributed to their size. The shrimp were as expected, but I didn't remember the sauce being so creamy - Yikes! Over 800 calories in that tiny appetizer. For dinner, I ordered the sea bass and the server recommended topping with a lite spinach garlic sauce. My sea bass was well cooked and a decent size portion, but I was not a huge fan of the sauce. It was just ok - I should have stuck with a simple preparation. My husband ordered the pork chop which was overcooked and covered with some type of BBQ sauce. I did not like his meal at all, but who orders pork at a seafood place? Our friend had the tuna which he enjoyed, but looked way overcooked for my tastes. Each dish supposedly came with two sides. I asked for broccoli and was told there was an upcharge for broccoli, but their zucchini was the special and included. I like zucchini so was willing to give it a try especially since I remembered the zucchini at their sister restaurant being pretty good. This zucchini was mush, just cooked to oblivion. I should have paid extra for broccoli. I also tried the au gratin potatoes and those were just ok. In my opinion they were dry, not creamy, as if they set in back for a little too long before being served. Nothing was truly bad enough to complain about -I hate being THAT guest. Service throughout the evening was good albeit a bit rushed. I like having my plates cleared, but this seemed a bit overzealous. The check came as my second glass of wine was delivered. Hmmm....no I didn't want dessert, but it might have been nice to be asked. Actually it would have been nice if the check was at least held until after we finished our entrees. The nail in the coffin - have you ever checked out the Bonefish nutritional guide online? What in the world do they put on this seafood to make the calorie count so high? Maybe I am just naïve, but I expect seafood to be a somewhat healthier option. How does a spicy tuna bowl have over 840 calories? If I am going to indulge, I want it to taste a whole lot better. Awesome Seafood Restaurant! I was visiting from AZ for a business meeting while in VA and definitely had my mouth watering for some great seafood. This restaurant was perfect that I returned a second evening for Happy Hour to eventually find myself being forced to enjoy another dinner with my colleagues. We chose the bar to dine in with more of a laid-back, upbeat atmosphere both nights since we're a rowdy group. First time, I started off with the Red Sangria which was refreshing and just perfect for the evening that I continued with that drink. Starter appetizer we enjoyed was the Bang Bang Shrimp, which was slightly sweet and tangy with just a hint of spice...ever so nice! My all time favorite is crab cakes and if they're made just right, my vote is in. The first evening was the Maryland Crab Cakes Dinner and Bonefish has my vote, the crab cakes were made just perfectly with fresh crab with a delicious red remoulade sauce and tender asparagus. Round two (second time, same week), I was addicted! This time, I had my eyes on the Orange Trust Martini...MhMMM! Absolut citron vodka, muddled mango and orange with a slight spice noted on the finish just gave that martini a KICK! It was just an evening for Happy Hour drinks but my colleagues ended up twisting my arm for another enjoyable dinner. I couldn't resist! I ordered the Imperial Longfin...pan-seared, baked and stuffed with crab, shrimp, scallops! It was decadent and mouthwatering with layered tastes...Delish! I also enjoyed a taste of the Grilled Specialty from one of my colleagues which was Lily's Salmon...another MhMM GOOD...salmon topped with goat cheese, artichoke hearts, sauteed spinach and lemon basil sauce. Once again reviewing a cusine i dont even like! So i hate seafood w/ the exception of fried calamari and clam strips (anything fried i'm ok with :-P). But one of my friends is a seafood nut and so to be polite I suggested dinner here. Well even as a landlover this place was great! They have an expansive choice of fishes that come with a variety of sauces. You can even do half and half of different types of sauces. And the side dishes were great. I am a sucker for mashed potatoes and these were great. I normally like them a little chunkier, but these were still great. I had a hard time deciding between the chicken marsala and the chicken fetticine. i went with teh marsala because you get a side and i wanted the mashed potatoes :) It was delicious. I also tried the mango sangria and was getting frustrated b/c my straw kept getting stuck on something. Then I realized it was a piece of mango! I have never had sangria with real mango in it :) The best part about this place was the service. Our waitress was FANTASTIC. She explained everything in great detail, talked to my friend about the degree of cooking for his fish since he was unsure. And when they lost our ticket and it was taking a long time to get our food she brought us complementary chowder. Now i dont like seafood, but the chowder was great! I left the actual meat in the bowl, but the broth was creamy and flavorful and even a little spicy The only thing holding me back from a five star is that they are known for their fish and i didn't personally eat it, so i dont feel i can give it the fifth star. Prepped by reading Yelp reviews, I really enjoyed my dinner at Bonefish. I've been here a handful of times but somehow missed the "memo" about getting the Bang Bang shrimp. Dutifully, I ordered it this time and its right in line with all the other + feedback. Bravo! The bread and dipping oil/herbs was delish as well. Good service and great house salad. I also got potatoes au gratin which was really cheesy and filling- if I hadn't paid attention, it could easily be mistaken for mac and cheese! I got a blueberry martini that described basil as one of the ingredients- but all I tasted was strong liquor, not much flavor- except in the berries in the glass. Great night overall. This place was packed on a Friday night so its definitely worth it to get a reservation in advance. read more

We do like Bonefish Grill for happy hour. They have a great price for house wine and rail drinks however yesterday happy hour did not go too well unfortunately. Service : We did not feel overly welcomed for some reason around bar area. Bartenders were polite, not so personable or friendly but just at the border line of polite and cold. Food : We ordered Ahi tuna appetizer to start with. It was to die for as usual. There is no complain about this dish. Then we ordered fish and chips. We had grouper fingers at Coastal Flat before. I know it's little more money but their grouper fingers were done right, light crispy batter and huge pieces of fish. On the other hand, fish and chips that we got at BFG was very disappointing. More than one third of the fish was batter and the pieces were quite tiny. I guess we expected more from BFG since they appear as higher end of chain restaurants. Alcohol : Someone at the bar told us that Maker's Mark is half off during happy hour (4:30pm-6pm) and it would be around $3.80ish. So we gave it a try. The bartender gave very healthy pour. But we started questioning to ourselves if it were real Maker's Mark. We are no Bourbon snubs whatsoever but Maker's Mark has very distinctive taste/flavor and we did not detect it. What makes it funnier is that the guy sitting next to us was literally asking the bartender if his drink was Maker's Mark. What are the odds???? hummmmmm. When the bill came out, we discovered that Maker's Mark was actually $5.20. It's only a dollar something but we felt little duped. I do not understand why people like Bonefish. I've been to Fairfax multiple times and I've been to other locations in MD as well. The ONLY good thing Bonefish has going for them is the Bang Bang Shrimp. and their bread and dipping oil. Their menu is cheap, which means most of their food is likely frozen product. Their ceviche is AWFUL. really quite disappointing. The fish was chewy and tasted like it was previously frozen. Their fish tacos are awful too. A fish taco is a measure of how good or bad a restaurant is and god their fish tacos are AWFUL. If you want fish, go someplace else. Try McCormick & Schmicks Seafood or make your own food at home. I dined with 3 others last night at 7PM. We were seated promptly; serve was friendly and efficient. Only complaint I would have about the service is that we were never offered bread and had to request some. Appetizers were GREAT we had the Ahi Tuni Sashimi and the Bang Bang Shrimp. So why the 1? I had the Mahi Mahi Oscar special. It was horrible!! The Mahi Mahi was dry, favorless, and over cooked. The crab (didn't taste like any thing-could have been newspaper) was these weird punched out balls-about the same size as peas. None of the crab was on top of the Mahi Mahi as it had rolled off on to the plate. There was no hollandaise sauce at all. The asparagus consisted of three gigantic stalks which had to be cut with a knife. I believe "Oscar" was a dish originally prepared for the King of Sweden-if it had been anything like this the chief would have been executed. Wow, this place was awesome. We went last night for Valentine's Day; made a reservation and was glad I did when I saw about 50 people crammed into the waiting area and bar. We were about 10 minutes early, so had a couple of drinks and were seated at the time we requested. Started off with bacon-wrapped sea scallops. I like to make these at home and may not try again because they won't be nearly as good as the ones at Bonefish. Wife had the grilled tilapia with mango, I had the salmon wth chimichurri and both were freakishly good. (I'll be trying the duplicate the chimichurri sauce this summer for the grill for sure.) Brought home a dessert and were 100% stuffed! The service was excellent; our server walked us through each of the salsas they had.
