If you have a big appetite then start with Moglai Porota. For main course, try the Goat Biryani, or Beef Rejala (curry) with Polao (saffron rice) and end it with sweet Doi (yogurt). The menu has been cleverly put together and features the most popular dishes that a Bengali would love to gorge on from time to time. In fact the items on the menu would please a wide audience. This is a really good place to find good Indian (Bengali) food. This gives a good "bang for the buck". The goat biryani ( with potato and egg ), fish dopiyaza, fish cutlet, pulao, hilsa, everything is great in taste and is a decent portion for the price you pay. I never tried Bengali food before and was pretty hesitant to try this place but I am glad that I gave this place a try. Dinner time gets pretty hectic but other than that the food did not disappoint. We had a sumptuous Bengali dinner at this place. I am very impressed with the Mishti doi. As for the main course it is relatively simple to make your choice from a short list of items without having to rack your brains to decide. The choices are among chicken fish and goat. We tried the chicken curry and kachchi goat biriyani. They are quite good. Will try the fish next time! My girlfriend is Bengali and orders me to take her to Bongos every Friday night for Kacchi (baby goat) Biryani because that's the only night they make it. And that's okay with me because I think it's delicious. But don't think you're going to the Ritz or anything. Most people take their food to go, but we eat in the restaurant because we want to eat the food while it's hot. Dinner for two is between $35 to $45. In addition to biryani they have morog pulao (chicken and rice) which I also like. I also often get either chicken roast (thigh and leg slathered with a mixture of yogurt and spices, cooked in oil) or the chicken jhol (a curry-type dish) which I eat with either paratha or kachuri (flatbread). The girlfriend sometimes goes for the fish and lentils, but my palette cant handle that. Dessert is mishti doi which is a sweet, flavorful yogurt type dessert. We find the service to be very good. Servers are very nice and try their best to accommodate reasonable requests. They also have a TV showing bengali concerts and shows, which amuses the girlfriend. We have eaten at Bongos around 20 times and cant recall a bad experience. The only gripe I have is that I don't like the tea, but it's complimentary so why am I complaining? So, in summary, i have a girlfriend who opts for tasty rustic food in a quaint unassuming restaurant at affordable prices on Friday nights. Very authentic very delicious Bengali food. I go here once per week because it is so good. Whoever the chef is puts their heart and soul into this food. The spices are on point. The goat and the chicken are amazing and fall right off the bone. It's a small resteraunt but it is the real deal. Definitely worth eating here. read more

The Mutton Rezala was good. Pulao was nothing like Bengali Pulao. It was more like Pilaf that is slightly colored buttered basmati rice. The Mughlai paratha, for which a whole lot of Bengalis crave since its not very widely available in the US, was bland egg paratha. The egg inside the paratha was big in quantity but had no other ingredients. So the kids loved it but we were like 'meh'. Wow. Such authentic Bengali food. Sometimes food is not just food, it is something more, it takes you into a realm of the senses and memories from childhood. Their mutton rezala was just a piece de resistance. Their elish was beautifully made. The fish chops were wonderful as well. The rosogullas were so authentic, I don't think that they have an equal in the Bay Area, maybe in the US. Almost everything which we tried came up to perfection. This is a little non fancy looking place in Fremont but they are serious about food preparation and where they source their fish from. We had chicken roast with parantha and fish do pyaza. Both were absolutely fantastic; chicken was succulent with perfect combination of spices and katla fish in do pyaza preparation was a example of how fish should be prepared bengali/ bangladeshi style. And when my better half who is bengali gives their fish a thumbs up , it surely becomes a go-to restaurant on a regular basis. This is a hit! read more

Incredibly good Bengali food!!! Was taken there by a couple of friends, and though initially I was skeptical about bengali food in the bay area, I was blown away by the quality of the cooking. We ordered almost everything on the menu -- the goat, the chicken, luchi aloo dum, mughlai paratha, shorshe ilish and fish chop. Every item was awesome, although my personal favorite was the chicken and the shorshe ilish. Their in-house mishti doi and particularly their rosogolla were delicious too. The only negative is that the service can sometimes be slow or haphazard. But the quality of food more than makes up for it. If you want to eat authentic bengali food, either because you come from that part of the world, or are simply curious and want to try out a new cuisine -- try out Bongo's. Tried it couple times. Their food tastes mostly good. The reason they are not getting 5 stars is because of their service and price, or portion based on price. They are not a fancy restaurant and that reflects in their service as well. First time I went there, we had no clue what to do. And it seems neither did the waiter. She gave us a blank look and went on to doing her business. Also, there is no exotic material that are used to prepare these foods. So, the price point for quite a few of their items does not make sense. I'm from Los Angeles, and when I went to Santa Clara for the Bengali Conference, I heard if I want to eat authentic Bengali food in the Bay Area, I must visit Bongos. I went there for lunch, and I was overwhelmed with the authenticity of Bengali food. I want to mention 2 things that I never got in LA, even though LA has tons of Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants. First: restaurants in LA can't cook goat meat the way I experienced it at Bongos. That's the way we Bengali's cook goat meat. Second: lonen gurer rosogolla! I never experienced such an authentic taste in the U.S. I'm a perfectionist about Bengali food, and I love to cook Bengali food at home. From my point of view, Bongos is a 100% authentic Bengali restaurant in the bay area, and possibly throughout California. The restaurant is small, it is not fancy, so if you want to enjoy the authentic food only, and you don't care about ambiance please visit Bongos. You won't be disappointed!
