This old school, downhome restaurant has everything you could want in a funky, homey, delicious breakfast joint. I particularly love the bread and bacon and eggs here. All so fresh and tasty. This iconic restaurant continues to crank out the best breakfasts around. On busy weekends we sometimes have a wait, so don't let that stop you and don't get upset about it. When your food comes, you will be so happy! I always order an omelet, and he can't resist biscuits and gravy with pancakes and sausage. (Yes, he finished it all...I don't know how he does it). This place came highly recommended. It has it good touches: Live band, ultra-friendly staff. The downside we're my old-fashioned pancakes. I was disappointed in the flavor and texture. The pancakes were not fluffy and they tasted funny. I relied on the whopping dollop of whipped cream and syrup for flavor. The strawberries were not chopped in bite-sized morsels. The bathrooms were tiny. I felt claustrophobic and I'm thinking the last person before me hurried as well...the guy left his bodily fluids for me to flush. Aieeeee! Why was I in the male room? I had to use the male bathroom because the lady's room was occupied for a while. It would make more sense to make them both unisex. I'd give Bonnie Lu's a 3-Star rating....but I'm giving an extra star for the holiday weekend. Maybe if it weren't so busy they'd serve better food? What a lovely find! Due to covid times, it's been a minute since the fiance and I have had the opportunity to dine outdoors. During out quick trip passing through Ojai from SB --LA, we found Bonnie Lu's on yelp for a quick and delicious brunch bite. For those that love a hardy, classic, all american breakfast/brunch, Bonnie Lu's is definitely the place. Of note, due to covid, they have now moved all of the seating to their beautiful and sectioned off backdoor patio. Their menu is extensive and includes everything from your classic egg dishes to delectable salads. I personally ordered one salmon scramble, but requested it as an omelette. The fiance went with a classic that included several eggs/potatoes and sausage. Overall the meal was delicious and service was great. When you first enter, you will find menus taped on their tables. When ready, you order at the front with the lovely staff. They will then seat you outside in a table of your choosing. You're provided with your own set of disposable utensils and the staff will asked regarding with condiments you want. If you require additional during your meal, they will hand it over to you. Tables were nicely spaced out and cleaned after each use. Super happy that we stumbled upon this cute little establishment with great food, good portions, and decent price. read more

The food was made exactly to my specifications with crisp bacon and milk in a glass with an extra glass of ice. Even the ice was very clear and obviously filtered water. Just a heads up for new comers , there is no indoor dining. But they have outdoor seating and have fine tuned everything during this pandemic. You will walk in and be told to look at one of many menus they have laid out in the entry way. You will order your food and pay before you are seated. They will prepare your drinks and condiments before you are seated and a waitress will walk with you and direct you to your seating and the waitress will also bring the drinks and condiments along with you. The food comes out fast and in to go containers to minimize clean up. The food is fresh and flavorful. We enjoyed the outdoor seating and the food. Bonnie Lu's is where classic diner food comes served with a smile. We swung by here for a breakfast that would give me a food baby worth showing off at the pool later on, and Bonnie Lu's certainly delivered! Upon walking in, I knew we had to sit at the counter so we could take in the true diner experience. My husband and I quickly agreed on sharing Bubba's Country Benedict and Melissa's French Toast. Without needing to be asked by us, the sweet lady taking our order brought out the Benedict on two separate plates. The Country Benedict consists of what tastes like a homemade sausage patty (think more texture and less salt that the sausage patties you would buy from the grocery store), poached eggs, and homemade sausage gravy all on top of a biscuit. If you didn't think this was enough, it also comes with a generous side of hash browns or country potatoes. The French toast was made from brioche and sprinkled with cinnamon, with ample maple syrup and whipped butter. We also ordered a side of bacon (see photo). It was all delicious and so much food that we ended up not finishing it all. We both left with food babies, and it only set us back $25. Such a good value in an otherwise expensive town! read more

Went here for lunch while staying a day in Ojai. My wife has the Montecristo sandwich and I the steak sandwich. Both portions were HUGE. We could easily have shared one of them. The steak sandwich is a large chunk of meat in sandwich bread with tomato and salad leafs on the side. I had the coleslaw on the side and it was delicious. We had the meal on the back patio, which is a large area that allows for easy social distancing during COVID. Great food, wonderful ambiance and good service. read more

Service was good. Food AWEFUL and super overpriced!!! What happened to this place? I ordered a HALF order of biscuits and gravy, (1 biscuit and a small amount of gravy) and it was $12.95!!! I hadn't been there in a few years and had these several times in the past they were always edible, NOT THIS TIME! The gravy was like slimy Chalk! All you tasted was FLOUR, slimy bad tasting FLOUR. It was not edible, so I sent it back and ordered a BLT. (18.95 by the way) The BlT was just as disappointing! I will say the bacon was edible and crispy, as I requested, BUT there was one little tomato on big pieces of sourdough, 1, count em, 1 flimsy piece of leafy flat lettuce, mayo and that's it folks. For 18.95 you think they could but some lettuce and tomato on the sandwich? It was beyond pitiful! I will NEVER spend my hard earned dollars there again. Went here for breakfast before heading home. The woman I think who is the owner is super nice and friendly. While the menu doesn't have a zillion things on it what they do have (or at least what we ordered) is tasty. They have some nice options for everyone. I had a veggie omelette and everything looked very fresh inside and well cooked. They gave me the wrong bread but it was easily remedied- The hash browns were the best part...My friend got the Elvis something or other-pancakes, eggs and what was supposed to be bacon-(he got sausage instead...it seems to be a running theme-they forget or give you some incorrect parts of your meal). The one major thing I did not like is how it came out...in take-out boxes. I am absolutely sensitive to the COVID and the precautions needed, but that seems to be a little overzealous (no other sit down restaurant I have been to is serving dine-in with take out boxes)...it took away from the yummy breakfast....it always seems pretty wasteful. The food itself was good, the service was friendly the little patio outside was nice...I would come back here for breakfast again. read more

I was so impressed with their COVID precautions here. Most businesses have become incredibly lax but Bonnie Lu's is taking it seriously AND making it work! There is no indoor seating. You should expect to make line to order upon entering the restaurant. They have menus set up at two booths so you can look at. They also have a few booths set-up with things for sale from local artisans! We arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and there were 2 parties ahead of us. We were told it would be about a 20 minute wait for a table out back. It was actually only a little over 10 minutes. They took our order at the counter and we paid before being led to a table outside. Everything is served in to-go containers due to COVID, but they are recyclable items. The set-up is for minimal contact with staff, but we still had someone check on us a few times. There was live music playing in the plaza while we ate so that was a nice little addition too! read more

But I was really disappointed to see that literally everything was served in disposable plastic containers (plastic cutlery individually wrapped in plastic, to go plastic boxes and plastic cups). Amazing food! My husband said- I can taste the love in the food. We got their veggie omelette and biscuit and gravy. The portions are perfect and the taste was so clean and not overly salty but so flavorful. The gravy was special- like a sour cream flavor and the egg of my omelette was so soft and fluffy. Over medium eggs weren't quite runny and the biscuits and gravy were lukewarm and the biscuits kind of crunchy and hard and lacked flavor (but I prefer salty gravy). The sausage links were a little bland. My husband LOVED the pancakes and he said his breakfast was good enough for him. After reading several reviews we were excited about going here. 103 miles later what a big disappointment. I guess they did not get the memo that 25% dine-in allowed as only patio dining there even though that is what we prefer. Pay ahead is weird as you are a Cafe not a buffet. Everything was served in disposable containers how tacky, unnecessary and environmentally unfriendly especially in a bohemian "love the earth" kind of town like Ojai. ALL other restaurants we have gone to with patio only use real plates, silverware and have real servers come talk to you with courtesy. The patio area smelled dirty like animals and sweaty people. It's a pretty patio area but needs some loving. The makeshift folding tables were very wobbly and scary to lean on. No ketchup on most tables so stuck with the Tapatio, anything to give this flavorless meal some oomph. The coffee was dreadfully weak but when you asked if we wanted a refill you'd think maybe the next cup will be better, asking the girl for cream and sugars that never appeared. So neither did our tip. No waitress came around to ask how was our meal or if we needed anything. I cannot understand these other reviews. Lesson learned, never again. Great family run cafe. You get the friendly vibe the minute you walk in. Nothing fancy but cute and inviting decor. Food is wholesome and delicious, everything that we observed coming out of the kitchen looked awesome and was served with a smile. My husband had basic eggs, bacon, pancakes, really enjoyed. I opted for ordering off sides menu. 2 poached eggs and grilled jalapeños and onions, I would highly recommend these. They're being super COVID safe and I think people need to deal with that instead of complain. Yes, the table wobbled a bit and your food comes in a to-go box. Whatever. Wife got the Eggs Benedict and ate more than she had intended. Generous piece of ham and she said that the Hollandaise was on point. I had the chorizo and it was sooooooo salty. Had to have each bite with the potatoes to balance it out. Ironically, the potatoes had no salt, but you get a good amount and they're cooked well. More like 3.5 stars. I was recently in town and decided to stop by this restaurant for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We waited around 35-40 minutes to be seated (table for 2) of which we completely understood due to small size of the restaurant and how many people were ahead of us on the waiting list. We decided to order the Lori's Chicken Fried Steak w/ a regular coffee and Ken's Breakfast Plate w/ turkey sausage, a chocolate milk and a side of hash brown and a cinnamon bagel with cream cheese on the side. Lori's Chicken Fried Steak was great! The steak was cooked well. I was pleasantly surprised by the biscuit. It was not too dough-dense but had the perfect flavor and consistency and the gravy paired really well with it. The portions of this plate were great too. This plate came with a side of home style potatoes which we also found to really enjoy. Ken's Breakfast Plate was your typical breakfast. The eggs were decent however I would skip on the hash browns and ask to substitute them for the homestyle potatoes. The hash browns lacked flavor. The turkey sausage was good as well. Great flavor! I am not fully sure if their bagels are home made but I would not recommend the cinnamon bagel. It did not taste like cinnamon at all. It was basically a plain bagel. It was underwhelming. Their other bagel options might be better. Overall, I enjoyed the ambience and vibe of this place. It is a very retro-style restaurant with very friendly staff. My server checked up on us twice which we appreciated as we saw how busy she and the other staff was. I would stop by again. I would give this place overall a 7.5/10. read more

Bonnie Lu's- is a great little breakfast spot to take out of town guest, because they get to experience a nice drive into Ojai, visit the art town and after eating at Bonnie Lu's walk them across the street to Libby Park for a stroll, play in the park or visit the amphitheater. The restaurant served breakfast, lunch and closes by 2pm. It's a really small restaurant expect to wait for a table. That's ok, its in the heart of downtown and some cute little shops to stroll or if your lucky farmers market on Sundays. As for the food, its good breakfast and lunch menu. Nothing to write back home about. But decent quality and quantity. You won't leave hungry. The service has always remain great from the local ladies with a smile. My friends and I made a mini weekend trip to Ojai this past weekend. On Saturday morning, we decided to go out for breakfast and I found this place on Yelp. It had good reviews, was close by, and had a cute small-town name to it, so it was the clear winner in my book. Since we had a group of 10 girls, I decided to give them a call in advance so they could prepare for our party. We found street parking right across from the restaurant on Ojai Ave. The restaurant doesn't have a massive amount of seating so our table wasn't ready when we got there, but it's understandable since we had such a large group. They directed us to wait in the back outdoor area. The outdoor patio area is also a patio to other shops in that shopping center. They have a small cart outside with coffee, but note that it's $2.50 per mug - the coffee isn't free! Once we were all seated, they took a little while to bring waters for everyone, but again, I'm cutting them some slack since this is a small town, a weekend morning, and we came as a large group. All of the staff were super friendly, too! I ordered Ken's Breakfast Plate with two fried eggs, turkey sausage, country potatoes, and a side of marble rye toast. Everything was good and reasonably priced. Overall, I was happy with this pick for our group. Perfect small-town diner with great breakfast food and a friendly and hospitable staff :) read more
