But lo and behold such a bargain actually does exist at Bon's Off Broadway on Nanaimo. Their breakfast special for $2.95 and coffee (with unlimited refils) for $1 comes to a grand total (when taxes are tacked on) of - wait for it... $4.20. Four-twenty! (LOL) Of course I tipped generously, and when I paid with my debit card they added two bits more as a service charge. But the very filling and surprisingly tasty breakfast was still less than six dollars. Is it a gourmet experience? No. But it's definitely a cultural experience that should not be missed. The decor is wild, and the sound track is high-energy, but I definitely will be going back. Just call 20 minutes ahead and get take out, and take it over to trout lake and find a bench. They are always super busy and they rock that show every morning. You have to be prepared to be patient, they are cooking for a full restaurant AND a massive line of people waiting for take out. They do a stand up job, and my food quality has always been on point. It has years and years of memories on the walls, stickers graffiti and more. Go out for a night on the town in Vancouver, and when you're hung over craving that perfect full breakfast bons has you covered. Check out the pictures on the walls while you're still drunk from last night, or wait outside and strike up a conversation with someone else waiting.. maybe there's a cool dog outside. We usually get the full breakfast for take out because it is a bit quicker, and we head over to trout lake to fend off the hoards of dogs who float over to our food by the direction of the smell.. asking for any morsels of this delicious goodness. The sausages are cut in the middle and fried to deliciousness. The potatoes are boiled then fried, so they're not very greasy at all. The bread is nicely buttered and lasts well for that bit of jam they include so you can spread it on that last piece after using your other bread to dip into the nicely cooked over easy eggs. It's a solid wholesome breakfast provided at a solid price. Many people rely on this wonderful place and their cheap price, and they do a great job on sourcing the breakfasts. The coffee is actually pretty decent too! It's always fresh since it's so busy, just get a cup and if it's out of coffee, grab some more by yourself. They don't make much on each breakfast made, and rely mostly on drinks and such. This is for locals and regulars, if you come here and are willing to wait and be welcomed, you are lucky! Dirty and Filthy I came here because it was recommended by Vancity Buzz. I ordered the pancakes for $8+. I could not take more than a few bites due to a fishy and oily taste. The scrambled eggs were placed on top of the pancakes instead of serving them on 2 separate plates. It resulted in soggy, fishy tasting pancakes. The restaurant was dirty and filthy. The washroom was disgusting. The waitress rolled her eyes when I asked a different fork because my fork had leftover food on it. She took it, and came back with the exact same fork. I subsequently scratched the bits off with my finger nail. Highly not recommended. Spend a few dollars more, and eat at a restaurant that is clean. read more

Rating this place in terms of stars is actually really difficult. On one hand, you know what you're in for as far as $3 breakfasts go, but on the other hand, $3 breakfasts are basically the best thing you can get in this late stage capitalist hell. I actually didn't really mind the gross grimey grease infested interior. In fact, it was actually kinda fun having a poster of doodled over Chuck Norris watch over me as I scarfed down the cheapest eggs, sausage, and toast $3 can buy. The coffee is self serve, if you're hard craving caffeine, you can walk up and pour it yourself... but therein laid the danger: I might have had 6 cups and had a great breakfast with a side of heart palpitations. Here's what you need to know about me. I am a breakfast slut. So when I heard about $3 All Day Breakfast I made a beeline to Bon's and was not disappointed. I opted for bacon in addition to sausage, a bank-breaking splurge that brought my entire meal total, including bottomless coffee and a 30% tip, to a whopping $10. My meal included two eggs, two slices of toast, three sausage links, five (!) bacon slices and a good helping of country potatoes. The potatoes and sausage were a bit bland, but nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't fix and certainly not a deal breaker. The restaurant itself is full of personality. I think to get the best experience out of Bon's, you have to understand and respect how it operates. Yes, you pour your own drinks. I think it's great. When you see how busy they get, it's actually a blessing that you don't have to wait around to get a coffee or top up your water. You don't come to Bon's to have someone hold your hand throughout your meal. You order, receive your meal, eat and pay. I think the best advice I can give someone who's worried about the food quality/value. Just get the bon's breakfast. It's the most consistently, predictable meal on the menu. There's a reason this place is known for it. Don't sit at a dirty table! This is an unspoken rule at every restaurant, it's not an unreasonable rule. I'm glad that they enforce it because it's a very bad habit for customers to have. Nobody wants to have to drop what they're doing to clear around you because you want a special table. You don't come to bon's for the atmosphere or the mind-blowing views. You come for a cheap, quick and filling meal. Everyone kept saying this was a hole in the wall type place and after my first visit, I could only assume there was more than one hole but you wouldn't know with all the written diatribe of drunk literature sprayed on its walls. This establishment is considered one of the Best in Vancouver and I can agree to a certain extent. It's very unique and not generic unlike some other restaurants in town but at the same time, it's somewhat worse by far because its the smelliest restaurant around. It really brings me on the verge of stinging around your senses. Keep in mind, I did come on a rainy day but that smell seemed to have settled in for quite sometime so much that its permanent. I can only deduct from two things that are the cause. The crowd they attract is of the hipster variety of which only shower once a month or they don't make enough money to properly dry clean everything which could be true considering their $2 and change all day breakfast. Did I mention the food was outstanding? It will definitely fill you up and leave you wondering why it was only $2 and change but that will be quickly dismissed because you'll want to leave quickly as the stench of b.o. sticks to your clothes, unless you like that type of smell. This review is not meant to trash the restaurant, it's meant to constructively criticize the smell of the establishment and not the people or the service or even the fantastic food they deliver. This is probably the dirtiest place I have ever stepped foot it. The food was not tasteless or Dry, but it was by no means a home Run. They have canned soup- it says so right on the menu. We were here for breakfast but boy oh boy was it an experience. Did I mention how dirty we felt? The walls and light fixtures are covered in writing like they are trying to speak to you. Is Bon's five-star worthy for their $2.95 all-day breakfast special? It's 'as good as it gets'! How can you complain? Perfect place to stuff your face after a night of some drinking. You get a full plate of eggs your way, pan fries, bacon and toast. So what if the toast was slathered with butter. So what if the potatoes were a little bland -- nothing a pinch of salt can't fix. I had a huge meal that was served promptly -- even though it was super busy. I appreciate the pan fries over hash browns, which are tougher to cook because it's those things always seem to be either too crispy/not crispy enough/too crispy. I also had one pancake, which was giant. $1.50. It was decent, but the middle was doughy, like it should've cooked for a minute longer. I was also a fan of the coffee. But what I love about this place is that you quickly notice the different kinds of people -- people who are alone, older couples, families, high school kids -- even a group of police officers. I found it funny that they have a few Chinese menu items too. I thought that was super random, but the Chinese couple next to me ended up ordering from that. Also, the jukebox: One minute they were playing 'Moves Like Jagger,' and the next was an Elton John song. Also, all the workers are so friendly, like they love their job. Who'd ever think you could conduct a one on one business meeting here? Perfect place for the incognito I say. Saw the ratings, it was near by where we were so we decided to just check it out. Looked empty and super run down from the outside but when we went in it was packed on a Monday morning! It was alright but I had to pay $7.50 instead of the $2.95 my friend ended up paying with just as much food. You definitely get your money's worth and it was yummy. The every day breakfast is $2.95 for sausage or ham, two eggs, two toast and hash browns. No better deal in town! I ordered a side of gravy to go with my hash browns which I would say is a must, it comes out piping hot and warms your belly. Pancakes can be added as well for cheap! The menu is huge, so if breakfast ain't your bag, you can easily get a bowl of fettuccine, a hot dog, or fish and chips. For 7 people, our breakfast came to $59 in total! I came here after a recommendation from a co worker. He told me about their all day breakfast and I'm a sucker for breakfast menus, especially if they only cost $3. The food was great, greasy but great. For the all day breakfast, sausage or ham was $3, while bacon was $4. I opted for the bacon and enjoyed every moment of it. It came with 2 slices of nicely buttered toast, potatoes, and 2 eggs. The coffee was also pretty good, bottomless refills (you just head over to the coffee machine to self refill). Place itself is a bit noisy but not unbearable. The decoration of the place certainly has personality. Overall it's a great place to bring family or friends for a casual breakfast. Service is so fast that your plate is literally dropped on your table. My ham and cheese omlette was unremarkable, the potatoes were oily and flavorless, and I'm guessing they use margarine on the toast because there was a plastic, manufactured taste I couldn't quite place. It's nice to see signatures and dates, good wishes and congratulations, and other messages past customers have left. Bon's also has writing all over the walls. So, save yourself the time and trouble of trying to find a parking space and definitely save your hard earned or not so hard earned cash- and forget about this place all together...because the food is so unappealing on so many levels that you will always thank me for saving you from this shit-fest of a business restaurant. When the staff can not recommend even a single item off a menu consisting of over 50 items - and tells you it's all bad, then it's time to avoid that place and go to 7-11 and buy a Slurpee and a bag of chips. I can't even compliment them on having clean plates - becasue the plate wasn't even clean. It fails on so many levels that even a negative mark is still too high. Yeah, this place sucks!
