My friend recently moved into a condo at the Cays and introduced me to Rock Lobster for sushi, which is right next to her condo! Service: our waiter was friendly, and even though the waiter brought out the wrong order for my friend, he put in another order after we corrected him. It was nice that another waiter that was serving someone else inquired if we needed anything and brought us spicy mayo, wasabi, and ginger that the other waiter had forgotten and refilled our water glasses. They have a great menu including bento boxes for their lunch specials during the week. They also have a happy hour. We came at around 1:30 p.m. on a Thursday and I was debating on whether to get a Sushi Roll or a Bento Box. I finally settled on the Vegas Roll. *Vegas Roll* this is not your typical vegas roll that is completely tempura fried, but just the shrimp is tempura fried and the outside of the roll is soy paper, drizzled with delicious eel sauce. I'm giving this place 4 and not 5 stars because of the service factor. Although friendly, our waiter was a little negligent in giving us what we wanted. 4 stars and nothing less because the food was excellent. I used to eat at Rock Lobster for lunch all the time when I worked closer. I'm actually surprised that I haven't reviewed it yet! This place could be 5 stars! The sushi is almost always stellar, but there have been a couple of instances where it has come out a bit cold (like almost frozen). The lunch sashimi plates are totally worth the price, but I know it's generally pretty pricey. There are almost always Groupons or happy hour deals so I've never run into the issue myself. I was pretty excited to try out this place. When you first walk in there is the teppanyaki table, which for me seemed a little out of place. The ambiance overall was good. We sat at a table for two. I could see this place feeling crowed on a Fri/Sat. I came for salmon sushi. The pieces were decent sizes and tasted pretty good. Although I though even with HH the sushi was a little spendy (only get $.25 off per piece). I should have gone for the sushi rolls. The HH gyoza was good and priced well. I thought the chicken yakisoba was the best choice and priced fair. The service was excellent. Very attentive and she made sure we had everything we needed. Food came out fresh and quickly. Such a disappointment from a place with great reviews. This was on a list of places I wanted to try before heading back to Washington. I brought my dad and his girlfriend here for dinner and they were also unimpressed. The prices reflect the atmosphere but not the quality. Everything looked nice except it was too dark and my dad and his girlfriend had a hard time reading the menu so I gave them my phone with the flashlight on. The server took a while to get to us and then took some time to get us water. I was looking at their specialty rolls and they were all spicy except for 4 out of the 14. I don't mind spicy but I know my dad isn't really into it. We ended up ordering vegetable tempura, strawberry butterfish, truffle surf & turf, dragon roll, soft shell crab roll, and some sweet shrimp. The vegetable tempura was basic, strawberry butterfish was sour, truffle surf & turf was good but not worth $16, both the dragon and soft shell crab roll was rolled poorly and the taste was meh to not good, and the sweet shrimp did not taste fresh. Overall the rolls were small portions which did not match the price or the quality. They also didn't include any wasabi or ginger so we had to ask for some. I also find it baffling when the server doesn't know what's on the menu. I asked for a Rockrita and she was so confused. Kept asking me to repeat myself and then said she didn't know what it was. I pointed it out on the menu and she put in the order. The Rockrita is supposed to have fruit infused tequila and a raspberry float. It definitely was not that. I came here twice during a two week stent in Chandler for work, and I couldn't stop recommending this comfortable casual sushi place to other out of town coworkers, especially when it comes to their Monday night 1/2 off sushi roll special. On both of my visits I sat and the bar and ordered entirely too much sushi for one person, immediately filling up on their tasty rolls. I'll admit, I ordered the fancy ones since work was paying for it, and can say that 'the cowboy' was my favorite out of what I tried. Each roll was unique though and I'm sure even picky eaters will find one that they like. Although I didn't make any special requests, the girl next to me did, and the chefs were very accommodating. Servers were friendly and attentive on each of my visits, listening to what I wanted and asking questions to clarify. Amazing sushi!! Come here 3-6p and you can enjoy 1/2 off certain rolls which I took complete advantage of. Also drinks are on happy hour too! That being said, I got the K.I.G roll (delish) and the amped up California roll (also good). My mom ordered the orange chicken as she is not a big sushi person and enjoyed that as well! Happy hour drinks weren't that discounted ($8 as opposed to the usual $10) but still good. The red dragon and the margarita were the drinks we tried...Yummy! The prices were fair with happy hour and the restaurant itself is very cool and breezy, however the only thing that could be improved on is service. The wait staff was nice, but not very attentive. Went with my husband last Friday evening. We arrived at 8:00. Ordered right away and food arrived within minutes faster than we expected. Wasn't as tasty as the last time we were there. We realized halfway thru our meal why. Our waitress told us that they would be closing at 9:00, it was 8:30. Well I have been wanting to try out the Rock Lobster for quite a while, and tonight my wife and I finally got time to give them a try. I think we've found a new favorite Sushi place. They have a special on Mondays and Thursdays for half price rolls, and it's not just a few on the list, it's every roll they make. They have several unique rolls here, and all of the basic stuff as well. One of the other things they offer here that is not all that common is fresh wasabi, and if you have never tried it then you don't know what you are missing. We had 4 rolls and a couple of orders of Nigiri. See the pics of the rolls. Strawberry Butterfish, Sunshine, E.I.B., and Surfer. They were not tiny little rolls because they were half price, that's for sure! I do suggest getting there early on Monday or Thursday because the places fills up fast. We got there a few minutes after 5, and we were the first place a the sushi bar, but all of the tables were full. By 5:20 the place was full. Could be so much potential but lacks basic functions for food prep. I could not be more of a stickler for clean shrimp and when I just ordered the Surfer Roll, the shrimp were not cleaned. As I've dealt with this I feel like at every restaurant, I just asked politely to not pay for that item and I'll be on my way. I just won't ever eat the food again because the people who prep my food can't clean it properly. In this day and age with sickness, I won't take my chances. This is 3.5. There are some things I liked about it but there were also some things that I did not care for. The place is pretty loud and kind of cramped. The decor was kind of interesting I like the lights. It took a while for them to bring us our drinks. The timing of the rest of the meal seemed really off. They brought my roll before they brought the appetizer. The food was pretty good, but not outstanding. We went on Monday when the rolls are 50% off and tried 4 rolls: sunshine, Pop-in, Strawberry, and lollipop. The pop in roll was absolutely the best. It was topped with deep fried honey shrimp which made it out of this world. I also really enjoyed the strawberry butter fish roll, ironically the sweet tart and sushi fish combination was very delicious. The lollipop roll might be good for carb free diet because there's no rice, it's basically rolled in cucumber which was light and refreshing. The sunshine roll was ok. All of the sushi was fresh and tasted good, but I think we would have preferred the rainbow and Las Vegas rolls over the sunshine and the lollipop. So we'll try those next time. They have 50% off all day and all night every Monday and Thursday. Fresh delicious sushi rolls for 1/2 the price, and we really enjoyed it. I basically come here once a month. I can honestly say that I had a bad experience my first visit here about 2 years ago. Little did I know that I'd land a job about a mile away and start coming here all the time. First things first, 1/2 Sushi on Mondays. They have the best sushi that I have tried in the Phoenix area, and for a $7 roll on Monday...Its a no-brainer. Customer service has always been fantastic. They know you by name, and usually know your order by heart lol. They have messed up my friends very particular order a couple of times, but they are really quick to get back on their feet and redeem themselves very well. Its in a great location of South Chandler. Its never too busy to find a table (I go during Lunch). This place honestly is kind of like a hidden gem. I don't think many people know about it - but should! We live down the street and have never been in. We went during "Power Hour"/"Happy Hour" to give this place a try. I hardly know where to begin. The staff was pleasant, however to say service was sloppy is being nice. I understand staffing has been a challenge post(ish) COVID and don't mind when folks are learning. No name tags or a cohesive theme of dress (if no uniform, maybe all wear the same type/color shirt). *100 plus degree afternoon. The front door was left open. It was hot and flies were everywhere. By the middle of service, there was not an ice cube left in anyone's glass. *Youngish looking hostess girls were serving themselves behind the bar. I don't think they were pouring themselves alcohol, but never appropriate. *My plate had a chip in it. The whole restaurant was disheveled and dirty. The Teppanyaki cook was pleasant. The food was just ok, which I don't think was a reflection of the fella cooking it as much as what it was. For example, the veggies had what looked like previously frozen American breakfast potatoes mixed in. Some of the handles of tools he used to cook were in bad shape. Maybe taped up but ratty. His cart did't look very clean and the margarine (not butter, he said) and season shaker, etc. had flies around and on them. $67 later, ew. The frosting on the cake was the surprise 3% Prop 206 fee on our check. I find this a HUGE A-HOLE BS thing to do. Had we been aware before coming in we would have never sat down. And it is NOT about the $1.95. Labor is a cost of doing business and there are more appropriate ways to handle paying your staff a well deserved wage. My family and I live across the street and have frequently enjoy eating here. However 2 weeks ago we noticed our waiter wasn't wearing a mask. We let it and slide but then returned last Saturday night and saw the entire staff were NOT wearing masks. I spoke with manager and he said the mandate was over. In reality the "mandate" ending doesn't go into effect for several months. But more importantly every business I have frequented since Ducey announcement still require masks. It shows the business cares for customers and also STAFF. I am 100 percent positive the entire staff and customers last night have not been fully vaccinated. It is irresponsible for a business to do away with masking when we know masks prevent the spread of Covid. Our family of 5 took our $$ elsewhere. read more

I want to preface by saying that I have never had a good experience at this restaurant, however today was the worst experience and I will not be going back. Two managers working that also work as servers did not want to serve my friend and I, so they had an expo serve us. Our server was very kind, however upon getting my sushi I noticed that there was a piece of metal in my sushi. I asked for the roll to be taken off my bill, which was agreed to happen. I heard nothing from either manager, Mike or Martin, received no apology and there was a "whatever" attitude about the fact there was a piece of metal in my food. I paid for the other remainder of my food and the head manager, Martin, stopped my friend and proceeded to say that he was not satisfied with my tip amount. Mind you, I still tipped even though I found stuff in my food. He said verbatim to my friend, "Really she can only tip that much?", "Tell her that she is fu**ing 86'd from our restaurant because she can't fu**ing tip more." Extremely disappointing to hear that someone in a head manager position is okay talking about customers in this manner. Martin, the manager needs to snap out of it and treat his customers better. Went to Rock Lobster last week because it's about a mile from me. Service: 0.5/5 The host was nice, but the waitress we got seemed annoyed/upset over something. We only saw her when she took our order and gave us our check. She never checked on us or refilled our waters. Food: 1/5 Don't come here for the sushi. DON'T COME HERE FOR THE SUSHI. We came here for sushi. It was depressing. There was a lot of promise when looking through pictures on Yelp. I'm sure a lot of us look at the pictures of food, tap on "photos", and pick foods based on how delicious it's presented in the photo. I got exciting seeing that they had pictures of fresh wasabi from a random yelper. For anyone who doesn't know, fresh wasabi is EXTREMELY expensive. I'm talking a couple hundred for one horseradish. I was pretty skeptical after I saw that "fresh wasabi" (written on the menu) was being offered for $2. When it came out, it was the preserved/crushed/salted wasabi. Honestly, I kind of expected that, but you know. We also ordered the butterfish nigiri, scallop nigiri, lollipop roll, spider roll, and I forgot whatever roll we had with some other fish in it. My friend ended up getting other food, so I can't speak for food (wasn't sushi). Maybe my standards are way too high because I've lived on near the beach most of my life, but where the heck are people who are saying that the fish is "fresh" coming from? Where do you live? Where HAVE you lived? Do you have taste buds? Have you actually tasted a fresh fish? Have you tasted a fish? Do you know what a fish is? Come on, man. First off, most of the fish that come into Arizona sushi restaurants are not fresh because they come frozen. That's okay. Most sushi restaurants use frozen fish. But for their frozen fish to have a fishy taste, it's concerning. It means that the seafood hasn't been kept well. The rice is squished and not light/fluffy in the rolls and the nigiri. That's not how it should be. It's dense and doesn't make sense. Check out the photos, and inspect the image of the rice closely to see what I mean. Or just go there and try it. The scallop is not a normal scallop nigiri. It's pieces of scallop, mixed in mayo and sriracha or something? Not sure why they would use that for a nigiri and advertise it as nigiri, but I don't know. Maybe a creative way to hide the fishy taste? The butterfish nigiri was weird. Butterfish kind of has this texture to it that is really good when it's eaten thin. I was impressed that it was on the menu, but it was a huge chunk that made me feel kind of gross. I appreciate them trying to help a sister out with the extra protein, but I think it kind of shows the lack of knowledge from the chefs on how to serve a specific type of fish. Spider roll tasted like more breading than crab. Lollipop was okay, but there was too much going on. I think people get it because they get wow'ed by the picture and want to feel exotic or something. The low rating is because everything was borderline tasteless/unsatisfying for the amount they charge. Really, I should've just gone to my normal sushi joint that is so authentic that I want to cry for cheating on them because I felt like ~~trying new things~~. If I could go back in time and slap myself, I would. Honestly, I told my boyfriend and friend that I felt like eating Popeye's down the road because there was no flavor. Price: 0/5 Pretty much a scam for the price for what you get. Grading on quality/taste/presentation. Atmosphere: 5/5 Very nice. I love the lantern. Only problem I can think of it how super dark it is, and how there's a distracting, flickering lightbulb in the corner, where we were sitting. Culture: 1/5 Not sure if this is even a category, but this restaurant is closer to the nicer side of Chandler/Ocotillo, catering to a specific group who are used to getting ripped off and taken advantage of because they have money and are willing. It was pretty packed that night, but not in the way you think it should be for an asian restaurant. I realized when I saw the lack of people diversity. People here are like those who got jebaited by the ~rave reviews~ or older people, who have never been outside of Arizona and care more about the book cover than the story. I'm beating around the bush here, but the only thing that makes it feel remotely asian (in an asian-fusion restaurant) is that they use rice, have a buddha statue, and take advantage of people who don't understand what's going on (if you've ever been shopping in an asian country, you'll know what I mean). I'd like to see the sample pool of people who were selected to vote it "best sushi in Chandler two years in a row". I also don't know if the people who are elite have been outside of Arizona or got paid off to write reviews, but the heck? Don't review sushi at a teppanyaki place.
