I checked out Bonzai Boyz at the Arizona Bao & Chicken Wing Festival in Peoria. They have great reviews on Yelp so I was excited to check out this Filipino food truck. Since it's a food truck, service and ambiance aren't really part of the experience. So, I will focus on the food. Which, unfortunately, severely underwhelmed. Since this was a chicken wing festival, we went with their wings. They have a special sauce which has dragon in the name that we asked about and we were told wasn't spicy so we tried it out. They ended up being some of the worst wings I've had in a while. The only redeeming quality is that the wings are jumbo-sized which is always a plus. Unfortunately, they were undercooked. You could tell because the wings were oozing water which showed that they hadn't been cooked properly. Beyond that, the sauce wasn't good either. I love Asian sauces but this one didn't have any sweetness to it. It was a weird sauce. I was expecting a lot more from Bonzai Boyz. Maybe I caught them on a bad day.

    These are super delicious!

Man these guys make great pot stickers. I honestly can't review anything other than the potstickers. I found this food truck at a dumpling festival and was delighted to find them again at Marina Heights, close to my work. Great food, served promptly. Hit them up when they're near you!

Found them at the Az dumpling festival and ended up stopping by twice! They are friendly and efficient and the food is delicious!

Bao Buns. Korean Fried Chicken (left) and Braised Pork Belly (right).

I got two bao buns. One Korean fried chicken and the other braised pork belly. It was not good, the bun itself was dry not moist and soft. Look at the photo and see the cracks. I think the buns were left out which caused them to dry out. The braised pork was a major let down as it has no flavor, you can tell by the color of it. The crispy chicken was barely crispy and again no flavor.

    Teriyaki chicken bento

Back at the office this week and needed something quick to eat. This food truck was outside our lobby so I gave it a shot. Really nice owner, answered my few questions and offered a couple suggestions. I went with the Teriyaki Chicken Bento. It was ok...the teriyaki sauce was really good and had a good kick to it. The portion was on the above average size which was nice. The chicken was a little on the chewy side, so next time I'd opt for a different protein.

Ordered their KFC plate $12 for a medium rice bowl, kfc in spicy mayo based sauce, poached egg and Kim chee. Great value considering they were at the bao festival in Peoria and an ube bao was going for $5 a pop. Chicken was crispy light and flavorful. Kim chee cold and spicy, egg cooked to perfection. I'd definitely purchase again.

24 carat gold crab bao & braised pork belly bao
    Rebekah D.

This food truck was at the Bao & Dumpling Festival. The line moved pretty quickly. They were nice. I ordered the 24 carat gold crab bao. The steamed bun was soft, a perfect little wrap for the delicious fried crab. All of the flavors complimented each other. Obvi the gold is for a little "razzle dazzle" but I do not care. It wasn't overly greasy or salty. 10/10 definitely would eat this again. At $12 it was a touch pricey for a single bao, but omgggg. It was amazing. The other bao that I got was the braised pork belly. This one was juicier, so it was a bit messier. Flavors were still on point. Steamed bun was perfect and I definitely love jalapeños with braised pork belly. So good. Between the 2 of them though, the crab bao was definitely the better one. Related but unrelated- this makes some bomb picnic food. So if you wanna be on a cute date and have something delicious, it's not too messy, super delish and it seems fitting to eat on a picnic blanket when it's like 75 degrees with a light breeze. Do something better than charcuterie and wine. Get some Bonzai Boyz.

Pork belly and Korean fried chicken buns

Tried this food truck for the first time at the Arizona Bao and Dumplings festival and it was amazing. They had mini buns as a festival specialty and I thought I was eating at a fancy restaurant! The Korean fried chicken and kimchi one was my favorite. Bursting with flavor and traditional kimchi. The pork belly bun was a close second with a little jalapeño for heat and lots of good flavors. And they looked so perfect like they were right out of a Food Network show. Any time so see this truck, it will be a must-eat for me.

    Fried rice with crispy chicken

This is a food truck that sells wings, fried rice, and bentos. I decided to try out their fried rice with crispy chicken. This cost me $13.03. It was a good amount of food and it was nice and hot when served. However, nothing about it felt extraordinary or bad. It was a passable meal.

Attended the AZ Asian Fried Chicken Festival yesterday which Bonzai Boyz was one of the food vendors. Their food looked better than any of the other trucks so we decided to give them a try. Waited in line for a couple minutes which gave us time to explore the menu. We ended up trying the Korean Fried Chicken Rice Bowl and had to try all 3 varieties of Bao Buns on the side. The food was really good all around. If you have the chance to eat here, the Chicken Kimchi Bao Bun was the best of the three we ordered, but both the Fried Shrimp and Pork Belly ones were also delicious as well.

Any time I see this food truck it's an immediate get out and get some. I love their bao, each of them has a unique flavor. The portion size isn't the biggest, but the variety of flavors is worth it. The soft shell crab bao is my favorite, the crisp texture of the crab really shines.

I first tried this awesome food truck on recommendation from a friend several years ago. They came to the Gilbert food truck event every Friday. I had the pork belly bao buns and they were AMAZING! Such great flavor and so creative to use bao buns as a "taco". They are so well balanced and delicious. I just had their food again tonight. I got the fried rice with grilled chicken and my boyfriend got the Korean fried chicken bento box. We also got an order of crunchy rolls that comes with a sweet and sour sauce. All of the food was piping hot and had great flavor! The fried rice was a good portion with lots of chicken -- I have leftovers! The Korean fried chicken was tasty and the breading had a great consistency. The rolls were delicious although I would have liked a little more veggies in them. Great food! Can't wait to try more items on their menu.

    The Truck Service Side

My family has enjoyed this truck, at least a dozen times in various locations. Next party we have, I'll probably reach out for a quote for catering. Depending on where the truck is parked will depend on the ambiance... So plan accordingly since it's the summer. Thank you Bonzai Boyz for your top notch service & yummy cuisine.

If and when we return, I will definitely get the sichuan spicy base. The seafood mini hot pot for one at $25.95 has plenty of seafood in it. There's a crab leg, mussels, clams, calamari, and more. Let me start with a little tid bit about Downtown Gilbert. There is nothing really special about it…read moreoutside of the vibe is right. Always a lot of people there so it makes you want to be there. Restaurant wise they have really basic offerings. Places you can find in Mesa, and Tempe, and Scottsdale. Now.... What truly makes Downtown Gilbert special are the small shops that are hidden away from the "main strip". One of those places is Clever Koi. Hidden in the Parking lot space behind Shaq's Chicken spot is a small strip of shops. A book store, smoothie place, and my favorite Clever Koi. Our family has very different tastes when we move from one member to the next. So finding places that we all like gets tricky. Clever Koi makes that easy because we honestly have yet to run into something we don't like. Let's start with our favorite starter. The steamed buns (giggity). The pork belly is hands down phenomenal. An amazing bite that literally makes you want more and more. The lazy fries are just that, again pork belly is included, but that garlic aioli is what drives this dish. The tai salad is obviously classic. The short rib dumplings literally make you close your eyes and just say "Mmmmmm". My middle child is the hardest pallet to please at any restaurant as he only eats certain things, but the Chicken Katsu sandwich here is his second favorite chicken sandwich in all this world. The first time he ate it he spent the whole ride home raving about it. Mind you, we live in San Tan, so not a short ride. The shaking beef is always good. It has this firey kick that brings the heat upfront but does not linger. You cannot forget about the fried rice here. Rice is one of my weaknesses in life second only to pizza. Fried rice ranks right up there with my top favorite ways to eat rice and this ranks right up there with my favorite fried rice places. The main reason we come here is because of the noodles. Ramen, ramen, ramen. When you think of Ramen, I assure you this is what you are thinking of. The broth is oh so savory and reigns in the fresh veggies and proteins to meld them with the noodles for a flavor punch each time you have a mouthful. They have great drinks here as well, or so I've been told by the other adults I come here with. I always just get a sake and Sapporo so... LOL The service is always good here and we somehow always manage to miss the lunch or dinner rush which is awesome. All in all... this is by far my favorite dining spot in downtown Gilbert. Great food, great drinks, great service, great atmosphere, in the middle of a great little square. A must eat for me.

Our server Maya was incredible and extremely knowledgeable on all dishes, drinks, and so many details of the restaurant! I've never had this good of service anywhere! My wife and I had the Pad See Ew with the braised chicken thigh which was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly chewy noodles, great seasoning. I highly recommend adding some of the homemade Fresno chile sriracha for a kick! The pork ramen was also very delicious. Be warned it's a lot of pork! My wife preferred it with the green jalapeño sriracha. The drinks were also very unique and delicious! A sideline view for me and riding the line for my wife. Oh and the best part was the dessert Bananas foster hush puppy puffs. These were so unique, seasoned with cinnamon sugar and Chinese 5 spice. It took some getting used to but the more you ate it with the Carmel toffee sauce the more I enjoyed it. All in all I can see why people love this place! It's a 5 star restaurant for a 3 star price! If you're looking to expand your flavor palette and have a wonderful evening I can't recommend Clever Koi enough!
