I was attracted to this restaurant because they feature gluten free Thai food. The food is mediocre at best. I ordered the fresh spring roll and it came with peanut sauce. The sauce was served hot and had a strange flavor. Not really a peanut sauce and not complimentary to the roll. The ginger tea was tasty but you will not get a refill (I asked several of the wait staff) and gave up. I then had the GF GNC with spicy ginger beef and wide rice noodles. There was no spice and no real flavor. I was completely underwhelmed. Parking is a challenge in this part of town and the restaurant is pure chaos. Tables are crowded together, the noise is very high and the wait staff is overwhelmed and dashing all over the place. I would not recommend the restaurant and will find my Thai fix at a restaurant with better food, service and a non chaotic environment. read more

I feel like Boo Koo gets a bad wrap, and deserves better than its (current) 3 star average. Is it fine dining? No. Is it the tip top best Asian Street fair I've ever had? Nope. Is the service impeccable? Also no. BUT, and hear me out people....it's great for a quick lunch, eating in or taking out. It has healthy dinner options when I don't feel like cooking. It's got a fun casual bar with some solid beers on a rotating tap and the bartenders always friendly. Plus there's kombucha on draught. Homemade sodas? Yep. Vegan and vegetarian options? You got it. Sort of bastardized Asian street food? Yep. And it's dang good. It's decently priced (for Mill Valley) and in an era where so many restaurants seem to be struggling to stay alive in this town I, for one, would love to see this yummy, low key joint stick around. Absolutely amazing menu! The food was fresh and fast and though we ate multiple items, we never felt too full because it was all so healthy. The ambiance is fun and alive with outdoor seating as well as a bar area. People of all generations were coming in grabbing tables and take out. We thoroughly enjoy having dinner at Boo Koo. It used to be much smaller, and now a bar has been added the space has been expanded. The restaurant still has a cozy feel, even though it's twice the size. Parking can be a challenge because of the location but it's worth the walk. The mighty mint salad was generous in portion and the salad dressing tasted great. The food is fresh and original. The fresh rolls taste great and the bar has a great selection of beverages. We always see great people there. Everyone has a great attitude. I enjoy coming here with friends to enjoy fresh food. read more

This place does not get great reviews, but I had to be in the area and I love Thai food so I stopped and the restaurant was full so I placed an order. I got the GCN or something like that, it was gluten-free. The lime cilantro sauce was very yummy People looked happy and the prices are very affordable so I gave it a go. My order was really yummy, and it was delivered fast, fast, fast! It was a lot yummier than I thought it would be. I like the lime cilantro sauce in the meet was very good. Overall I liked it, and I think I will be back. I don't know why people are complaining. This is not the usual, bland Thai food that you find in Marin - this food has a bit of zing. Then again my experience is that street food tends to be a bit more flavorful. I you haven't given it a try I highly recommend that you do. I gobbled my meal down in no time flat. I am so disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. Everything about our recent visit to Charlie Hong Kong was disasterous. The staff was rude, the place was packed and we had to jostle our way to one of the small tables, the noise was deafening, and worst of all-the food was awful. Boyfriend and I are typically *very* good eaters, and will finish whatever is in front of us, even if it is only mediocre. The food at Charlie Hong Kong's literally had us dry heaving at the table, and we had to toss about 3/4 of each of our meals. Boyfriend had the green curry chicken-but as noted by others, it definitely tasted like fish. I had the spicy dan noodles (or something like that) but they were out of tofu, so just had it plain. The texture of the noodles was slimey, and the peanut sauce tasted rancid. The vegetables were steamed very very soft, making the whole dish somewhat of a mushy rancid mess. One exception to note (and hence the extra star) was the Coconut Curry soup. It had a nice kick to it, had nice flavor balance, and was overall the redeeming addition to the meal. Typically if we have a negative experience at a restaurant, we assume they were having an off night and give the establishment a second chance. Boo Koo's tagline is "Asian street food." It's a cool concept. They have a simple menu with rotating specials that basically consists of different types of vegan noodles with optional meat toppings you can customize. They also do pho bowls, Bahn Mi's or Vietnamese sandwiches, and spring rolls. They try to use organic and premium ingredients, and even have some inventive beverages on the menu. In keeping with the street food concept, the setup is an order at-the-register-and seat-yourself sort of deal. The vibrantly painted walls and industrial decor give the place a modern-tropical-street-vibe, which is fun. I like the atmosphere and I like the concept, BUT I think it falls a little short on the execution. It's really a sanitized version of Asian street food. My friend and I both felt like the flavors were a little lacking...like something was missing. The spicy beef wasn't all that spicy. The curry in the noodles also lacked the good flavors. And at over $10 per person, you can't really call it "street food." This is the type of place that will probably thrive in Marin, but if you're looking for more authentic Asian street food, you might be disappointed. OK, I've tried this place several times, both when it was Charlie Hong Kong, and now Boo Koo. I live not too far away, so I was hopeful the food might have changed along with the name. Sadly it did not. I don't know if the plan was to strip all flavor from the food to make it palatable to Mill Valley moms and tots, or perhaps the cooks have no idea, but in any case the items I've had (pad thai, green curry rice bowl, and banh mi) have all been devoid of any real flavor. Boo Koo provided a wonderful place and absolutely marvelous food for a partyTo celebrate a film that was premiered at the Mill Valley film festival.We had about 50 to 60 people come. Boo Koo closed their restaurant for two hours for us. The restaurant is nothing too fancy and created a laid back and comfortable vibe for our guests. It was great for the party Staff passed yummy appetizers followed by a wonderful buffet. Many of the people coming to the dinner were either vegan or gluten-free or dairy free or had other kinds of food preferences. Everyone marveled about how delicious the food was and what a comfortable space it was Parenthetically, we had a an absolutely wonderful lunch at Boo Koo to check it out and if we lived in the area we would this a go to place. Meh. Banh mi was ok, but the bread was all wrong. Way to thick and chewy. The wifes green chicken curry tasted nothing like curry, seriously, neither of us could taste anything in that dish. It was more like boiled chicken over rice, it was that bland. If you're vegan, this place might appeal, as the menu has a variety of vegan options, and your taste buds are acclimated to boring flavorless food. Very cute location, but somewhat empty when we stopped by for lunch. I saw quite a few people pick up orders though. I ordered the lemon squeeza which was refreshing & served in a mason jar. Cute concept, but the condensation! I got the hoisin pork banh mi and it was pretty good. It was much smaller than a typical banh mi (comparing to Dragon Eats in SF) and I would have preferred a softer French bread. It was good but I like my banh mi's a bit more spicy. Also, I like the veggies to be pickled. I think it adds the right crunch. There was too much aioli which made for messy eating. My friend got the green curry noodles and loved it. The service was friendly and quick at the beginning. We had to flag her down to pay our check but in fairness more customers were seated. The interior is pretty nice, well-lit, cozy and clean. There's a bar area that you can sidle up to as well. The menus clearly label what's vegan, gluten-free etc which is a huge plus in my book. 3.5 stars but I'll round up as I think there's potential. Maybe it's hit or miss, but wow, I was disappointed in the flavors - or should I say lack of. I love places like this - and by "like this" I mean with curry on the menu because that to me promises rich, deep flavor and spice and creaminess and a marriage of taste that is only achieved with a high level of practice, cultural knowledge and love. Not to say that Boo Koo doesn't have those things - but we were all underwhelmed the day we went for lunch for a friend's Birthday. My curry was actually watery and, though it may sound from my description that I had lofty dreams of the perfect lunch - I am really not that hard to please and certainly no expert. Items in my curry bowl were cooked well, just lacked seasoning in a major way and I am not sure where all that water came from... Just visiting friends in Marin county this holiday season and I heard that CHK had opened second spot in town. I am a long time customer of CHK in Santa Cruz and really wanted to compare the two restaurants. I must say I do love the food in SC and Mill Valley did not disappoint. I love the vegetarian choices here, they are really good and generally hard to find in any fast food restaurants. The big thing here is not to try to compare this food to authentic Asian food you might have had in SF or in your world travels. This unique food is brought to you though the California healthy-organic lifestyle we all love and appreciate. Although not as funky as Santa Cruz this restaurant should be popular in Mill Valley. I've eaten here 4 times now and have had both good and bad experiences, unfortunately with the bad outweighing the good. Like other reviewers, I agree with their comments about too much salt. My pad thai was very disappointing with too much sauce and gummy noodles. Once I brought home a basic noodle dish for my omnivorous teenage daughter, who, after 2 bites refused to finish it, and I couldn't blame her. It went in the trash. With that said, I did enjoy a great soup of the day a few weeks ago, and a decent salad during my first visit. . Bottom line, I am not going to make an effort to go there again soon, but will certainly give them another chance or two after a time when they may have worked out kinks and found their groove. Loved the Bahmi with pork. The flavors were oustanding. The Bahmi with beef was a little fishy flavored and not my favorite but my son loved it. The red curry once again I was not a big fan but my friend liked it. The green curry I loved the flavor but not a fan of the chard. I felt it was tough. The noodles are good. The pad thai was flavorful I felt but everyone else in my group thought it was to sweet. The food comes out very quick and the veggies all seem very fresh. The item that surprised me the most was the brussel sprouts. I do not usually like them but the way they sautee them , well lets just say the flavor was pretty amazing! The prices are about right for the amount of food you get and right now the only dessert item is the Thai Ice Tea. Just an FYI. read more

Seriously, people. You can get more authentic tasty food in any Chinatown. Susan's Chinese Deli a mile away makes food that tastes better. But if bland is what you gringos like, so be it. Had the Spicy Dan noodles w/curry chicken bowl for $9.90. That's not cheap. Nor spicy. Nor tasty. Good quality ingredients perhaps, but bland. The Chicken rice bowl ($7) my date had was comparably muted. Compare w/Chinese Deli's curry and you'll taste the difference. Bigtime. With a name like "Charlie Hong Kong" you'd expect Charlie Chan himself to come out and investigate the food. Authenticity isn't one of its strengths here. I may one day return to try the banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), but w/such choices as "chicken teriyaki" one cannot expect much. Chicken Teriyaki...REALLY? Real banh mis are either made of marinated chicken or pork, not this gringo favorite. The other combo choices (curry chicken, teriyaki salmon, etc.) also don't encourage this. But heck, it may still taste OK. Just don't expect much except to pay Mill Valley prices. As for the dining area, it's cozy, about 20 seats, several semi-share/communal-type side-by-side tables that mimic a for-real Asian hole-in-the-wall, so be prepared to take out instead. read more

Meh is right. Two stars for organic veggies and fast service. Had the green curry noodles one time, spicy Dan's peanut delight the next. Too much sugar and the noodles (in the curry dish) were too soft. I wish I liked it, but I didn't. Somehow the food *looked* like it should be tasty, but I found the flavors muddled. Loved the cheerful decor and found the staff nice both times. Update: I know this place has changed (management? cooks? sauces?) in the last couple of years, and I gave it one more shot. The Pad Thai I ordered recently was fresh, with distinct and vibrant flavors. I ordered the Pad Thai with a 'Surf and Turf" topping and was a bit shocked at the $18 price. However, the portion was very generous (maybe serves 3 people?), which makes it more reasonable for a local casual lunch than it may first appear. I brought it home to mix up (the presentation is with carrots and peanuts on top of the hot noodles) and added some Sriracha for heat. Really good! This might have been OK, if the broth had any flavor (tasted like broth from a box you get at the grocery store) or if they were more generous with the other ingredients. My girlfriend Grace kept raving about this place, so I had to finally check it out, and I'm so happy I did! Cute place, solid healthy/organic food, and very reasonably priced. I could tell most of the people in the restaurant were regulars. I had the shrimp vietnamese sandwich, which was very delicious. It was served on warm french bread- topped with jalapenos, carrots, and daikon. My hubby had the pad thai bowl with the spicy beef. It came out steaming, freshly cooked. Super tasty and really filling. I also had the homemade lemonade soda, which was tangy and balanced out the spicy sando perfectly. Our whole meal was less then $25. Finally! A good, healthy, fast, cheap place to eat at in Mill Valley! We love the newly-named Boo Koo! We eat here at least three times a month and have tried most all of their dishes. Our 4-year-old daughter especially loves their chicken soup and I'm usually partial to their salads. My husband often goes for the Surf n Turf Pad Thai, which is really tasty. The beef is quite tender and tastes like it's been simmering. I also love the fresh lemonade with fizzy water. Yes, it's small, yes it's a bit loud but that's the kind of place it is - quick, casual, fun. The staff have always been really nice and accomodating and I like that they seem to be continually trying to improve the menu, try new things, etc. Wow, writing about it makes me think we should go there for dinner tonight! ETA: Still a big fan but am bummed that their kids' menu now consists of only one item. Please bring the kids chicken soup back! The adult portion is way to big for our little one. read more

My husband and I were really excited to try this place. Boo Koo's asian street food concept had a lot of potential, but it fell short on taste, execution, and value. Considering it is in Mill Valley, the rent must be high, but an expensive Banh Mi sandwich with no salt is ridiculous. How do you justify the price, if the flavor isn't perfect? We also ordered the Chicken Satay and Boo Koo Peanut with Hoisin Pork, and both were very bland. Surprisingly, the place was packed. But, it is the only asian restaurant in the vicinity, so that doesn't say much. I'll give them 2 stars, out of the kindness of my heart. My overall statement about Boo Koo is that the food was bland (though fresh and probably high quality) and the service was friendly but ALL of our orders were incorrect. If you want details, keep reading. Went to this place on a Sunday after lunch time with husband and 12 year old daughter. The cashier was friendly and clarified all of our options during the ordering process. We went to get a table (3 were open but NONE had been bussed so we didn't know what we should do) and sat at one with dirty dishes from the previous diner's until an employee (who looked like she was having a lunch break-thank you for helping us) came over and cleared and cleaned it. The utensils and napkins are kept on the tables but ours was almost completely empty and went unnoticed by the staff so we grabbed ours from the next table. Our food came and each order was incorrect (received noodles instead of the requested rice and my pho had cabbage in it even though I asked for it to be held). The male server was very friendly and had the dishes fixed. I was surprised that he didn't bring me a spoon with my soup (pho eaters out there know you need an Asian soup spoon). Again, he was friendly and prompt at fixing the mistakes. Lastly, we all felt that our individual dishes were very bland. I'm Vietnamese and have had pho soup in tons of different places and very rarely does one impress me but NEVER has one tasted bad like this. Maybe it's a different take on pho that I'm not familiar with but if you prefer traditional pho flavor, don't order this. I would find it hard to describe the food at Charlie Hong Kong. They describe it as organic Asian street cuisine which I guess sort of describes it. I think I would add the pidgin term "all mix up," since it seems to be a fusion of many different Asian foods all at once. Sounds strange, but it works. While I'm traveling for work, the SO comes here regularly - so regularly in fact that they know his name... I'm guessing from that that he likes the place. The basic concept is fairly simple - you choose your noodle bowl (all vegan) from a list of seven and can either go with that or enhance it with one of seven toppings including both vegan and carnivore options. In addition there are salads, soups, rice bowls and Bahn Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) available. Though I have tried almost every different noodle bowl on the menu, I'm partial to the Spicy Dan's Peanut Delight with some sort of meat topping. The only noodle dish neither of us cared for was Charlie's Pad Thai which didn't resemble any Pad Thai anywhere. However, food, like many things is a matter of personal taste. The SO loves the Hoisin Pork sandwich and almost always orders that to go with his noodles. There is a small seating area however, it gets both crowded and noisy so we tend to get our bowls to go. Heres what I like at BOO KOO. 1. Banh Mi-pork....its amazing, very flavorful and the bun is the best I have ever had because its toasted and fresh. 2. I like that you can place lunch orders online however not a fan of the price for a Boo Koo Peanut with additional Chicken Topper, entree total $11.29. It's obvious any Asian type restaurant in Marin is almost double the price you pay vs. prices in the east bay just sayin.. I drove from corte madera to the deep cuts of Marin to pick up my food. To my surprise, this was a non Asian business establishment.. just sayin... I brought my food back to work, tried the noodle dish and was pretty descent but nothing exciting. I was expecting more flavor out of it but did not really get any. Adding more hot sauce actually made the dish taste better. Would I order here again? Probably not. I've really tried to like this place. I've been there to eat in a couple times and ordered take out a couple more but honestly I don't think I'll try it again. The waitress that served my table when I ate there was very friendly but I have to say that every time I've called to order I either can't hear them because it's so noisy in the background or they are rather rude and unfriendly. The pho is good although I've had better and as far as the other dishes go I feel that they are over priced and definitely not authentic Asian cuisine. I have many many fond memories of Charlie Hong Kong in Santa Cruz. As a college student 10 years ago, I would drop in and get a bowl of delicious noodles, fresh veggies, and interesting sauce for a very reasonable price. You can imagine how overwhelmed with joy I was when I saw their second location open almost a decade later in my stomping grounds here in Marin. My taste buds were rewarded with a carbon copy of the food I remembered from my time in Santa Cruz. Still just as delicious, still a great deal. They've added a few things to the menu, but for the most part, the experience is the same, and that is a Very Good Thing[tm]. I don't know how or why the owners decided to open a second location after all this time, and in Mill Valley of all places in the world, but I'm VERY grateful that they did. Warning: Its not asian food. If you have a hankering for bowl of real Pho or anything with Vietnamese or Thai flavors go somewhere else! I've tried everything on the menu. The food and the service is inconsistent. The veggies are always fresh - I'll give them that much. The fresh lettuce, cilantro, basil and marinated red onions makes the Shaking Beef salad the best bet to order, if you insist on going. 4 out of 5 times, the curry flavors have been watered down and bland. The Pho broth is completely flavorless. The pad thai and peanut noodles are the same dish with 2 different thick bland, sweetened sauces. Very disappointing. The last time I went, I ordered the GNC (green curry noodles) with ginger beef and enjoyed it.The curry was fragrant and tasty enough after I added some hot sauce, the beef was tender, moist and bursting with flavor. I ordered the same dish tonight and nearly threw it out. The beef was dry and the curry sauce had barely any flavor. My husband likes the psuedo Bahn Mi sandwhiches. Its not a true bahn mi. Its more of a stewed meat sandwich with a hoisin bbq sauce. Its edible for what it is, but its not a bahn mi. The service is slow and often disorganized. The food is over priced. I'd really love to like this restaurant. It looks so inviting and is a short walk from my house. I would eat there a few times a week if the food was better. Unfortunately, its currently off my list of places to go eat in Mill Valley. read more
