I'm very happy to see this place getting such great reviews! Last night was my second visit and it definitely won't be my last! So far my favorite is the Laughing Phoenix Red Curry with a side of the delicious Thai Coconut-Mushroom soup. I'm not a vegetarian but I've been trying my best and these bowls make it very easy! Lord weed the yellow curry and chicken Pho. Delivery was great, but unfortunately it was the taste that drew us out of interest. The Pho we ordered was very plain, no broth that was worth writing home about. I wish there was more spice or savory tang to it. We had to add our own hoisin sauce to get a kick from the soup. We also ordered the summer roll, which only came with 1 roll, usually most restaurants will have 2-3 rolls within this app but we were sad to find only one inside the box. I had the yellow curry with brown rice. Now, this is a new thing, I've never experienced with other Asian restaurants, but the rice was already mixed into the curry! WOW. This caused a curry to become soggy and unappetizing, I'd expect like most restaurants, (especially for take out) to have the rice on the side. This actually cause the box to leak so half the curry was in the plastic bag, the other inside the box. I was really disappointed with this. *NOTE: if you're ordering through a 3rd-party app, make sure you ask to have the rice on the side! Lastly, I added the tapioca (mango) as our dessert, and this was the saddest of all. The fresh mango was not ripe causing a sourness to the dish and the tapioca was very plain. We had the tofu pad thai, bahn mi, and thai beef salad. The salad was so-so...not bad, but not great. So was the pad thai. Again; could be lots better, and with all the other joints doing pad thai in the north bay, perhaps stepping up their noodle game would be a priority. And then we come to the bahn mi. I figured hey, it's really hard to mess up a bahn mi as long as the baguette is legit. Spoiler alert: the "baguette" was a tragic, dense, doughy, mess of a "bread" type object. Now, if we were 50 miles from the nearest bakery, or the region was generally devoid of bread options, then it would be understandable. But this was simply bad. Like, 90's airport quality bad. The most delicious thing on the entire sandwich was the raw jalapenos. Man, I hate being critical of little local joints like this, but people have to know that the bahn mi is just bad, see? I'm not sure what the fuss is all about from the poor reviewers. I do think that Mill Valley is full of restaurants that ask for your wallet at the door and then hand it back to you empty after a sub par meal that only seems better because the decor is pretty and the hosts/wait staff kiss your ass. What I do know is that when I had delicious, no nonsense, tasty street food in Vietnam a few years ago that Boo Koo is second best to buying a plane ticket to taste the real deal. I've just had the worst pho in my life. I had to re flavor the soup with the sauces I could use on the table, but lime or lemon glass they possibly used for the broth was too strong. It shouldn't be sour like this. Beef wasn't thin sliced as it typically is and chunky. It was gross. My husband had a fried noodle. He said its 2 stars. No flavor. I was excited to try Boo Koo but was somewhat disappointed with my order at first. I had the chicken pho which was very bland and tasteless. I guess I am used my pho being more flavorful...I decided to try another dish so ordered the teriyaki chicken sandwich. This was definitely a better option. The sandwich was tasty and satisfying. My friends had the special pad thai which was also good. Prices here are typical for Marin, $10+ average per person. Portions are not huge but perfect for lunch. The inside is decorated colorful but there is limited seating. I wouldn't mind returning again to try another dish but would not recommend ordering the pho. read more

Since Mill valley beerworks was closed the day after Christmas and our short walk around town took us here. It's a hipster twist on Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian mix. Maybe I should have stuck with the bahn mi sandwich, but the pad Thai with spicy garlic was mediocre and that is the usual defining dish in a Thai place. The boo koo peanut was their signature dish. It was ok. Even with the suggested hoisin pork, it was mediocre. If you're asian, you will most likely be disappointed with this joint. This place makes me crave Burma superstar. If you aren't a fan of Swiss chard, I suggest you stay away from any of the wok fried dishes. The drinks were good though. The fuzzy g and lemon squeeza were both tasty and they have a good selection of brews too. Service was friendly, so if you're hungry and just need a quick bite to eat, this might be a place for you to go. By the way the woman's bathroom is a slide door and near the kitchen side. Boo Koo fills a huge need in downtown Mill Valley for a good, casual spot for lunch or dinner. I probably eat there once a month or so after a hike. But while I like it and am happy to patronize, it's not without its flaws. Pros: Relaxed setting. House-made sodas and the wing appetizers are super tasty, and my favorite things on the menu. Service is always fast and friendly. Cons: The banh mi and pho (pretty key offerings to nail if you're a SE Asian restaurant) just don't stack up to what you could get for two thirds the price in the Tenderloin. The banh mi in particular lacks the array of flavors you expect, getting overpowered by the hoisin sauce of the pork. read more

We paid over $6 for fresh rolls and received only a single very small fresh roll that only contained clear noodles and lettuce. (see image). The Bahn Mi was also disappointing. Our second visit to Boo Koo--I would give it 2.5 stars if I could. The decor is nice and the menu is fun--more varied than your typical Pho joint. BUT--the devil is in the details. My daughter got a rice bowl with greens which were not rinsed properly and were gritty and sandy. I got a salmon salad which was not bad, but could have used some additional zing. My husband's Sirracha soup which again was good but he described as "nothing exceptional about it". The wings were not very good--kind of stringy and the skin was fatty--I didn't care for them at all. The staff is nice, I will say that for them. One additional note. Don't take that one table by the door and the kitchen--the kitchen sounds are very loud there and you feel in the way of everyone. read more

I love this restaurant. But lately I've noticed they changed the pho noodles from thin to wide. And this may seem petty but I dislike the wide noodles and feel they should change back to the thin ones because it's a weird texture and they stick together and they're very clumpy they break apart into those small noodle clumps it's actually just a wee bit off putting. I really really think they should go back to thin noodles. other than that I love this place and I highly recommend it. I give 4 stars but the noodles themselves are at a 1. The pork is tender and the sandwich has just the right amount of spice that it doesn't take away the flavor. This place serves my favorite Bahn Mi Sandwiches in the whole of Marin. The roll for the sandwich is so crisp, crunchy, and warm. Drinks here are just as good: the Thai Iced Tea and The Arny, taste delicious. Probably the best two of these drinks I've had. However, the food does not live up to its description. The spring rollS is really 1 roll that is cut in half. The rice paper was dry and the filling and sauce unimpressive. The potstickers are generic and looked as though they were zapped in the microwave. No crunch just soft boring potstickers. The dipping sauce was the only saving grace on this dish. The pork Banh Mi is a complete disaster. The pork is mushy stewed meat in hoisin. No pickled vegetables, just mayo, cilantro and shredded carrot. This sandwich is suppost to highlight flavors and textures of savory, sweet, sour and crunch this was all hoisin mush madness. So sad that it was such a bomb, it truly has potential to be great. I loved this place when it first opened and used to take-out three nights a week! The restaurant has a good vibe, and friendly helpful service. If you're expecting hot Thai or Asian spices, you will be disappointed as this type of Asian food is not hot, in fact it's pretty bland, but if you have the desire for a little fire, they willingly hand out little containers of hot sauce. The Bookoo peanut and GCN are both great options, but in recent visits tasted like Crisco oil and had a lot of oil on the rice and bottom of the container. For toppers I prefer the teriyaki chicken and spicy ginger beef as both were moist and flavorful. I am not a huge fan of the green curry chicken as it has little flavor, but it's a great substitute on the Chinese Chicken salad if you want to try something other than the teriyaki. The salmon has no flavor and has a weird genetically modified color, texture and taste. I'd avoid it! Same goes for the tofu. I was hoping it would be stir fried and crisp on the outside but it was rubbery and I couldn't eat it due to the texture. I have not tried the sandos but hear they're excellent. If you're not feeling well, they make a great chicken pho ga that comes with chiles on the side if you want to add some heat. The mighty mint salad is a good choice but it's sweet due to the mangoes and dressing. I usually ask them to exclude the mangoes and substitute the dressing that goes with the Chili Lime Salmon salad. The mint dressing is good, but sweet. The guys who work here are AMAZING! Love them, especially Miguel! They are super friendly, nice, helpful and always welcoming even when it's busy and there is a line out the door. Since the restaurant expanded they've added a lot of new employees who seem a little overwhelmed and slow but will hopefully improve over time. The place can be packed, and the waits can be long, especially if you're picking up a to go order. Know this before you go as some reviewers seem frustrated. The place is tiny, the kitchen is small and they're turning out a lot of food. Overall it's a decent place to go for a quick bite with affordable prices. read more

We also got the pho which was literally the worse soup any of us had ever had. The chicken in it was definitely old and really awful. I feel like the food/ establishment was not clean either. We just went here for lunch on our break from work. For $13 I expected the pho to be much better. One of my coworkers also go the pho and the other got the chilie salmon. We sat outside because there was no seating inside, and slowly plates started coming out (after about 15-20 min waiting). First the add-ins for one of the phos, then the salmon. 10 minutes later we got one of the phos. 5 minutes later we got the other plate of add-ins and finally when my soup got cold the other pho arrived. The noodles are not traditional pho noodles (thicker, almost like soba noodles) and the broth was below par. I'm used to cheap, flavorful broth which is normally my favorite part. I added a lot of siracha and it was passable. The beef was the best part though, very tender. Also not very flavorful. It was missing salt or something, very bland. My friend who got the pho agreed, but my friend who got the salmon said her plate was good. I also got a vietnamese pork sandwich to go (to have for dinner tonight) so I will report on how that is. To preface my review, I will say that I am of southeast Asian descent so might be more critical of this because of my protective nature over this food region. I was super skeptical of this place but my friends wanted to try it and there was no line so we went in. I got the green curry noodles with spicy ginger beef. My friend got the shaken beef salad. My noodle dish was bland and the slapped together dish looked like something I would make at home from my leftover curry that I could easily make. The beef was dry and difficult to swallow. My friends shaken beef salad (in Vietnamese it's called Bo Luc Lac) had this kinda gross thick sauce over it. It looked extremely unappetizing and it indeed was. The beef was dry and tasted like it was only seasoned in soy sauce (again, something an amateur home chef could do if they were lazy). What's kinda funny about the name Boo Koo...is that when you say it out loud in Vietnamese, it means "suck penis" 0.0. I've always been skeptical of "Asian Fusion," but some restaurants do it really well while respecting the Asian culture in which it tries to fuse with. This restaurant did not. read more

I was attracted to this restaurant because they feature gluten free Thai food. The food is mediocre at best. I ordered the fresh spring roll and it came with peanut sauce. The sauce was served hot and had a strange flavor. Not really a peanut sauce and not complimentary to the roll. The ginger tea was tasty but you will not get a refill (I asked several of the wait staff) and gave up. I then had the GF GNC with spicy ginger beef and wide rice noodles. There was no spice and no real flavor. I was completely underwhelmed. Parking is a challenge in this part of town and the restaurant is pure chaos. Tables are crowded together, the noise is very high and the wait staff is overwhelmed and dashing all over the place. I would not recommend the restaurant and will find my Thai fix at a restaurant with better food, service and a non chaotic environment. read more
