I really do love the food but I have had the same service issue twice when getting take out from this restaurant. I ordered several Ban Mi Monday night and specifically asked for the salad of carrots, daikon and sprouts to be included for each sandwich. I made a point of asking because the last 2 times they have not included it. Again, this time they included barely the same amount as a normal singal order and it had absolutely NO bean sprouts. This is really frustrating especially since I made a point of asking. I am all about supporting local especially now with business so reduced. I ate here on a Sunday at 3:00 with two friends who eat here often. I got the GCN at there request. While the flavor was good, the sand from the chard was quite a disappointment. Boo Koo is a great addition to the Mill Valley food scene. Affordable prices, good array of options, and nice atmosphere, especially since expanding. My favorite dishes are the Bahn Mi with their hoisin pork, or Green Curry Noodles (GCN) with the chicken teriyaki. Their pho is also very good, and they have a good beer menu. The staff are great and service is generally fast. read more

Very small-hole-in-the-wall with about 4-5 tables inside and countertop tables outside. Ordered the Godzilla Beef Pho since it was on the special menu of the day and thought that it would be some "magical beef broth" in the pho that I must try since Boo Koo was charging $12.95 per bowl. It was a big disappointment. The broth was really bland and tasteless and there wasn't much in the bowl to justify the price they were charging. Although the meat were was not the usual sliced beef that Vietnamese restaurants usually serve, and was organically raised filet mignon from Marin Sun Farms, there was nothing special about it. Having dined extensively on street food in Asia, I can say with some confidence these guys would not survive as a hawker stand in Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore. Would you stop it with this vegan garbage. All of their dishes are vegan and you can add meat after. This means they are handicapped by not being able to use proper ingredients at the outset, and you can try to salvage it after the fact by jamming meat on. WEAK! Boo hoo... Went there today for lunch. Have been a few other times with similar experiences, but thought maybe give another chance. The menu just looks so fun and yummy. Here are just some of the things that happened today... 1. AWFUL service, the 2 girls working there really seemed pissed off and would of liked to be somewhere else! Wish I could understood spanish better, sounded like some serious bitching going on. 2. Lucky we got our order, because most others there had been waiting a LONG time for their "Asian Street Food" and it seemed like every order was wrong. 3. Found some highchairs stacked in the bathroom, went to get one to use for our 11 month old and were filthy and broken. (Not the first this has happened, but really a total bummer.) 4. Oh ya, and the food was really nothing special and way over priced for what was served! We ordered a very boring Boo Koo Peanut $6.95 a noodle & veggie dish (could not find any veggies...) and $5.95 tofu sandwich. Thought the sandwich was a meal, but just snack size (my mistake I guess). Will not be going back there again. read more

I've been a Boo Koo-er going back before they added the bar area and extra seating about 3 years ago. Some reviewers who are less than pleased state they expected an "authentic" Asian menu, but Boo Koo is exactly as it claims -- an adorable spot for asian fusion "street food"-level fare. Highly customizable menu: add your own proteins to salads, noodles. I'm addicted to their Boo Koo peanut noodle stir fry, and have eaten more Mighty Mint salads than anyone on the West Coast. I have been here a few times. Food isn't bad, with the exception of the third and last time I went: the food was bland at best, with very little flavor. The atmosphere is nice, and they have decent beers on tap. Service is pretty good too. But some dishes are misleading; as other commenters have stated, the pho is definitely not even close to what you get at an average Vietnamese restaurant. Very Americanized. Certainly no Asian or ethnic flavor. The opposite of street food. Bland. A disappoment for a sophisticated community.

I have cooked Asian food for more than 25 years, but I am not a purist by any means, and I was totally game for "fusion" when my family came to dine here for the first time last night, having just moved from SF to Mill Valley. But I'm afraid the result was far worse than in the most mediocre Thai restaurant one might stumble into. I *wanted* to like this place---I really did---and the staff were extremely pleasant, efficient, and accommodating, but ultimately a restaurant has to be judged on its FOOD, don't you think? We had [titles may not be exact]: 1) Shaken beef noodle salad 2) Pad Thai with prawns 3) Pad Thai surf and turf 4) Grilled prawn skewer The prawns in 2) & 3) & 4) were massively overcooked to the point of being shrunken, rubbery, stringy bits of fishiness, though the sauce on 4) was very nice. The beef in 3) had almost no seasoning and was again overcooked to the point of being stringy and very dry. But 1) was the saddest of them all. I was seated next to the glass window overlooking the kitchen, which is a cool idea. The bad part is that you can watch them fuck up your dinner in real time! I felt like banging on the glass like Dustin Hoffman at the end of the "Graduate", but instead of yelling "Elaine! Elaine!", I wanted to yell "Stop! Stop!". I love a good sear on cubes of fillet mignon, but this guy had his pan on FIRE and could not put it out, despite repeated efforts. Furthermore, he kept cooking it...and cooking it...until I sighed and looked away. Like an arson investigator, I determined that this steak had at one time been of high quality, but the cremation was almost complete, and all succulence and moisture and been driven off, along with the flavour. Boo Hoo, our asian fusion lunch was not good. We live on the east bay where authentic asian food can be found. We ventured to Marin for a hike and decided to try BooKoo afterwards. The first thing I noticed upon entering the restaurant was the lack of asian cooks, staff or diners. That is usually a red flag...but be open right? The staff was nice but got my order wrong. They quickly corrected it and brought my hoisen pork bahn mi to the table piping hot. But the pork was too chewy and the flavors pretty bland. The bottled plum sauce on the table was very watery. I ended up dumping out the pork and eating just the veggies. Hubs tofu curry dish had no curry flavors. He had to squirt Siracha to spice it up. I do not recommend Boo Koo. read more

Stumbled on this place in MV and after checking the yelp reviews I almost didn't go, but then I noticed many of the bad reviews seem to be from fake accounts. Anyway since I am always looking for good Asian food we tried it out. Thank goodness I didn't listen to yelp because this place was pretty damn yummy. Banh mi - good, green curry noodles - yum, pumpkin soup - mmmm!! Also the service was friendly and prompt. So even though I still turn to yelp to help make good culinary decisions I have started to realize that their rumored tactics about fake reviews must be true because this place deserves better then the recent onslaught of 1 stars. The food is good, not great but healthy. The prices are bit deceiving. This is the FIRST AND ONLY place I've ever heard of charging the customer for every refill of ice tea. Not only to they charge for a refill but it's $2.50 each time. It's water over a tea bag served in a small glass jar that is completely filled to the top with ice so really you're getting half a glass of tea. The water on the table is free though! Also $7 for an appetizer order of "Spring Rolls" is totally reasonable. When the order was served, to our surprise there was 1 roll on the plate. Not only were we disappointed to see only 1 roll (and it was not listed on the menu as 1 roll), but to charge $7 for 1 roll when the entrees, salads and sandwiches are nearly the same price? read more

It's a nostalgic reminder of the street food scene in South East Asia, if not a little gentrified for Marin County. The place is clean, and the vibe from the raggae music is hip and somehow fitting. But what makes this place one of its kind in this lilly white neighborhood is the elements of authenticity sprinkled around its atmosphere and its food. It's a composite of many street food scenes in South East Asia: hawker centers of Singapore, back alleys in Saigon, and perhaps a little of run-down Japanese train stations thrown in for good measure. The menu is quite simple: basically you choose a basic vegan dish, to which you can add protein in a variety of forms from fried tofu to teriyaki chicken and everything in-between. Depending on your appetite, you can add appetizers, or for a self-contained complete meal, go for a bowl of chicken noodles or pho gà. There are a few things left desired, though. I'd like to see a more complete set of condiments, including the ubiquitous fish sauce, and a variety of chili peppers and sauces. Also, the quantity of the noodles in the aforementioned pho gà was a little anemic, and so was the amount of garnishes. However, when asked for more noodles, they gave me a bowlful on the house. Ahh... that's more like it! But still after two visits in just a couple of days, I really appreciate this fine alternative to the somewhat pretentious food scene in Mill Valley that serves inexpensive, healthy (relatively speaking) and tasty food. Now that it is no longer a part of the Charlie Hongkong chain, I look forward to seeing it evolve its menu, and bring us a taste of Southeast asia for those weary travelers who yearn for the quintessential food scene of the region closer to home. Haven't been here since they changed their name and was excited to try it again. I ordered the Green Curry with Shrimp, like I always do and was horrified to find bits of chicken and bone in it. The time before that they forgot to add the sauce and told me they would send a coupon to make up for the mistake but that never came. The green curry is good but I tad too salty for me ... and i'm a salt freak. I really want to like this place as I work down the street but they keep disappointing me. read more

I had the teriyaki chicken bahn mi and immediately noticed the bread was soggy not crispy - unusual for a bahn mi - then I bit into it and wow, was I on the unfortunate end of a bad night for the chef or what? It was so salty, it was almost inedible. Or was the chef over compensating for all the "bland food" reviews? It was the worst bahn mi I've ever had. Not only that, my husband's pork on the pho was extremely over cooked and dry. Cannot believe a chef could put out food like this. On the plus side, service was fine and I like the decor. I wish I could say that I enjoyed this place, but it was terrible. The potstickers tasted okay, but were the most pale & sad looking potstickers I've ever seen. I even cut it open to make sure it was cooked through the middle before eating it. The chicken pho was horrendous! It smelled weird & tasted worse. They also were really skimpy on the sides (bean sprouts, mint, etc.). My husband & I each took 2 bites & agreed that we couldn't consume it because it was that terrible. We ordered the Chicken Pho, Chicken Satay and Summer Roll to go. The Pho was hugely disappointing. The noodles are pad thai noodles, rather than the delicate vietnamese vermicelli that are so delicate and awesome. But the worst part was that the noodles and the broth were in the same container. By the time I got the Pho home, the noodles soaked up all the liquid and they were overcooked mushy noodles, with absolutely no broth. What a disappointment. At Out the Door in SF, they serve the noodles and chicken in one container, and the broth separately when you order to go - and it comes out perfect. So this was the main problem. The chicken satay was ok, but lacked flavor as did the peanut sauce. The Summer rolls were not rolls, just 1 roll. I expected 2. Overall, I was so disappointed sorry to say. read more
