Ugh. After three experiences here, I have given up. First time: super super mediocre meal. "Pad thai" is basically linguine with a sauce that one could easily make at home. My referring to them as linguine was not a mistake - they are not rice noodles (or if they are, they taste like no rice noodles I have ever had before and exactly like boxed linguine). It tasted like what my Midwestern aunt would make at home say 20 years ago if she was trying to make "Asian food". You know, regular Italian style noodles, some soy, some peanut butter and we're good to go. Much of my family still lives in the Midwest without access to good ethnic food and I can promise you, they'd do better than this now that we're in 2012. Second time: beef salad. See above review. Think novice cook without much experience eating ethnic food tries to make thai salad. Beef wasn't the same cut that I've had at actual Thai places, didn't seem grilled, and salad was completely bland and did not have the tasty dressing I'm accustomed to. Third: Chicken peanut kebabs and an attempt to try the pad thai again. Kebabs weren't bad and the shrimp they used for pad thai was good qualify, but aside from that, same as first experience. Just what Mill Valley needed! Really good, unique food in a great atmosphere and entrees that cost less than a beer at any other restaurant downtown. Great for take out, a fun bite with the kids or a casual dinner out. The pad thai is really good, the ginger beef is phenomenal as an addition to any of their bowls or great in the Banh Mi (sandwiches), and all the curries are solid. I ordered on line. When I went to pick up my order.It had white rice,I had ordered brown. No prawns which I also ordered. I called and spoke to the manager Anthony and was assured my account would be credited. Sat down to finish my lunch and discovered a short black hair in my meal,after I threw that up I called Anthony again he said I this was totally unacceptable and I would recieve a refund. It's been ten days and nothing. I have eaten at Boo Koo at least once a week for years. I noticed a not so good change with the expansion. Now totally unexceptable,I'll miss it. read more

Located deep in the "Attitude/it is all about me" part of Marin County, ( Eleven of the 17 one - 2 star reviews were from...RIGHT, Mill Valley! )they will get a larger than average number of World Travelers that really know what they are eating. Or so these star struck (they being the stars) will tell you. Most, after spending huge amounts of cash on their so called travels will have eaten in many places; most of them decidedly not street food. Not that white tablecloths don't have a place in the world of dining, but somehow that isn't what HKC's is trying to emulate. After all the "younger set" eats cheap not well. So infuriating to find that sometimes one can do both. Which really is besides the point. If you want to compare the food found in the Mission, or on Clement Street, then HKC's stands up to the competition. Do I want to join the MV crowd and nitpick? Fine! Damn noodles were cut too short. Green Curry was very good, the sandwich stood up to SF places quite well. I did a four star rating since I have only tried two of their offerings, but somehow, I'm thinking that the next few times will yield a five. Last note: As usual, I am compelled to note that if you want to know about bad service try NY and find out what real poorly done service is. Then too, when is the last time you had your work reviewed? Say on a hectic and busy day. Give a little slack to your servers,this is of course a message for most of us and not for that certain group of people who truly believe they never make an error, have similar living choices and know that after all the other guy is always wrong. read more

This is the worst Vietnamese (okay asian fusion) restaurant I have ever eaten at. The pad thai tastes nothing like any pad thai I have ever eaten. You get a protein selection, but the meats already come pre-marinated so you obviously have to choose the more expensive shrimp in order to have flavors that mesh. The worst is that the Banh Mi is more than $8! While I am fine with paying $8 for a delicious sandwich, I have had delicious and authentic Vietnamese sandwiches for $2.50. So either make a tastier sandwich or bring the prices down! The only good thing? The drinks are delicious, very refreshing and something that I've never had before. Will never be eating here again. I am surprised at the rating! I stopped here after getting my eyebrows done at Benefit down the street (a must-do whenever I am in town). My mom recommended we check out this spot. I thought it was totally amazing. So fresh and flavorful, with generous portions and good prices. Sometimes Thai food can taste heavy or greasy, and this was just not the case. I ordered veggie pad thai and was delighted with all the fresh veggies and rainbow swiss chard. Yum! If I lived near this place it would definitely be my go to for Asian food. read more

Very fresh affordable asian fusion in Mill Valley. So nice to find family friendly low key dining downtown that all can afford. I had the pork sandwich and the summer roll-delicious. First let me say, Matt (and his wife too), one of the owners, is one of the most hospitable and welcoming people to hit a Mill Valley business in years! Food and happiness go together as far as I'm concerned.. I like to eat food prepared by happy people! I am a big fan of their chicken noodle soup/bowl (it has a fancier name than that, but I can't pronounce it...poo gow or somethin like that?) FRAGRANT is the word that comes to mind with every dish I've tasted. I enjoy the excitement of the aroma of the ingredients before the taste buds get it! All the dishes look beautiful (I haven't had any of the sandwiches yet), are pleasantly aromatic and taste and feel good on the palate. I've also noticed, I don't feel overly bloated, even when I've over-indulged...their dishes have an overall lightness without being bland. Quick, reasonable and eclectic in their "fusion" abilities. All in all, a very good experience. I've read some of the not-so-nice reviews and wish people would chill out a little with new businesses and give support as they find their footing. This is a tough time to open a business, but feeding people is a great honor and this restaurant takes that to heart....so open yours and your mouth and ENJOY! GOOD JOB Hong Kong Charly! Awesome place to stop for a quick bite. Walked in and although it looked busy we were seated right away. Even though it was just the two of us they didn't hesitate to seat us at a four person table. No wait! I had the salmon salad which was delicious and my husband really enjoyed the chicken Pho. Stopped by for lunch, I had the chili lime salmon and it was surprisingly good. The wife loved her noodle dish. We almost never go to the same restaurant on a weekend getaway, but we are already talking about going back here. The staff walked by often to check on us, but didn't interrupt unless we were out of tea. I really appreciated that. Easy enough to ask them for something if we needed it. Well, I am fussy and had a special request and it was honored without my order taking any additional time or even a questioning look or comment - "are you sure you don't want Teriyaki sauce in a rice bowl?" After a day of hiking, the food really hit the spot and I barely had to wait for it despite the fact that the place was crowded. Very efficient service! Serving sizes were generous, not the crazy bloated sizes you get in many places where quality is sacrificed in order to feed one person three portions! More than enough to eat and the food was fresh! I have no idea if it is authentic. I've been to China and Japan, and found that the food differed greatly from region to region. Honestly, I don't even care. So-so, judging by 2 visits so far. The Hoisin Pork banh mi was good, except that the pork was dry and the sandwich missing some essential flavor (a sweetness that should have been there). SKIP the 'Vietnamese Chicken Noodle Soup'. Near-tasteless broth, dry overcooked chicken, a few tiny shreds of the advertised organic napa cabbage, served with wilting brown-edged basil leaves (lovely!) and one tiny chunk of lime much too small to lend any flavor. Waste of money. Perhaps this is a location best visited earlier in the day, before they start to run out of some ingredients, or at times of the day when their kitchen is less chaotic. I wanted to love this place but after 4 visits just can't. It is a great concept that just isn't being executed well. Each time I've visited I've had something wrong with my order or have had to wait up to 30 minutes for takeout. At first I thought it was just growing pains, but they still haven't figured it out. Really people, you're in downtown Mill Valley, not the back alleys of Ho Chi Minh City (or even Clement Street), so carping about this place's "lack of authenticity," "expensive" (read: 7 dollars) sandwiches, and "sanitized" Pho is a bit much. On its own terms, Boo Koo is definitely a worthy addition to the Mill Valley food scene. I just had a delicious Spicy Ginger Beef Banh Mi that tasted super fresh and had a great balance of crunch (provided by jalapeno strips and daikon radish), flavor and some serious spice (**note to those who complained about a lack of heat, there are bottles of Sriracha on each table). Came with a nice small side of carrots and radish. I also had a Ginger tea, which was on the sweet side, but went down well with the sandwich. My server was great -- casual and friendly, and she even offered to turn down the music, an offer that I happily declined as I was enjoying the soundtrack. Bill was just under $10. All in all, very satisfying, and I will be back for another Banh Mi next time I'm in town. read more

Good prices, you get a lot of food for your money, cool homemade drinks, and a really friendly staff. It's also really fast! I've never waited longer than 10 minutes to receive food. It's a great place to take kids if they are hungry and don't want to wait for a really long time at a sit down restaurant. They have inside and outside seating. Get the prawn sandwich! As soon as I walked into this restaurant I had high hopes as the restaurant look kind of has interesting decor, looked smaller but cozy. It kinda went down hill from there. The waiters looked miserable (no one smiled... at all). They weren't friendly... Oh well. Thought at least the food might be good. I ordered the curry with salon and gluten-free rice noodles dish, papaya salad and a kombucha. The salad was good. The salmon-noodle dish was just passible. The kombucha was served in a glass jar which tasted flat and not cold. The bill was pretty high for what I got. Overall experience was a bummer. :( read more
