This was my first time at Boo Koo. Service was fast and friendly. Food was flavorful and fresh. No pictures of the tiger prawn spring roll, Brussels sprouts, or chicken satay because we gobbled it up too fast. My husband enjoyed Marin IPA on tap and I had the hard kombucha. We like to go downtown Mill Valley when our car gets serviced for maintenance care. We like to walk around visiting the many unique shops, bookstores and people watch - because that's always fun. For lunch, we referenced YELP to show us places we could walk to for lunch. Lots of choices and wonderful restaurants in Mill Valley Center. We were delighted to locate "Boo Koo" b/c not expensive. When you walk into the small restaurant you'll see hanging from the ceiling a grouping of old styled tungsten lightbulbs, overhead a long table. It is idea a cute idea and provides effective lighting. Long table seats 10 people. Community table or group seating for ten. While looking up you will notice fun and creative ceiling Art. I don't know if it's wallpaper or actually painted - either way it's fun to look at. It brightens up the woody decor. It is a cool small restaurant. We got appetizers b/c we wanted the YELP discount. We shared three appetizers; the vegan summer soft roll, potstickers and the special chicken wings. Potstickers were really nice and came w/Ponzu sauce. My summer roll was stuffed w/vermicelli noodles, mint, Julienned carrots & cucumbers, accompanied with Hoisin sauce, which brought it all together. Chicken wings were little guys (I prefer big chicken wings), coated w/heavy sticky sauce. After eating those, I excused myself from the table, to go wash my hands. That sticky sauce was super (as in too much) sweet. Didn't stay for the whole meal because we we're set, I guess. I only gave three stars because of the great potential "Boo Koo" has. I have read some YELP reviews that talk about lack of character and lack of interestING newer taste in the food. I agree with that! They need a NEW chef in their kitchen to make the food sparkle!!! The cuisine should shine!!! I'd recommend cutting back on the sweet sauces, big time! Add more kickin' flavor: cilantro, peppers, onions, garlic and & coriander. Spice it up!! I like to think that "hole in the wall" means a fantastic find despite its unassuming facade. This is just bad food in dirty conditions. The food here was at one time better, but wow, it's no longer the case. We ordered a keto bowl that we sent back TWICE because we'd asked for no green onions--it was covered in them. On the THIRD try, they'd clearly just scraped them off the top and left the rest mixed in the bowl. Good thing the allergy isn't a life threatening one, or I'd be writing a different review right now. Not to mention the peas, carrots and corn mixed into rice that consists of the Keto Bowl were clearly not fresh and had no south asian flavor whatsoever. I've had better from Pho and broth from an instant packet. There is absolutely NO way that their bathroom would pass a health and safety check. Disgusting. read more

Went here for lunch. The food was absolutely amazing. I've never had Asian street food before, and it was definitely a surprise, however a good one. I got the pot stickers, which had more of a fried texture, but still tasted amazing. I also got the bbq pork bun special, which was served in more of a taco bun rather then a traditional bao bun. Overall, food was amazing. The service was good. There was only one waiter, however we were seated almost immediately and we're able to order within 5-10 minutes, with food coming a few minutes after. The overall ambience was really nice. They have really pretty flowers on the table, and the drinks are served in cute jars rather than cups. Overall, really great place, am going to 100% eat here again. read more

Came for the Keto bowl and it was served on a bed of corn, peas, and carrots. Not Keto. Mint salad had no mint.

The service was sweet and friendly. BUT THE FOOD, MY GOD THE CRAPPY OVERPRICED FOOD. I rarely get MAD after eating in a restaurant but this place really got me. I can't believe I spent SEVENTEEN DOLLARS for a tiny bowl of white rice and veggies with a piece of salmon the size of an eraser. WITH NO SAUCE OR FLAVORING. I asked the waitress, I see on the menu we get veggies and salmon and our choice of sauce? She said, yes there is a bit of sauce on the salmon and it will flavor everything else. What do I get? Miniscule portion of fish, BURNT veggies and white rice. Zero flavoring. I had to ASK FOR SOY SAUCE and then had to douse my food with plain soy sauce. Is that pathetic or what? Wondering about the inspiration for the name. A clever take on the french word for plenty, beacoup? An original take on Beatles lyrics, "I am the eggman. I am the walrus. Boo Koo ga g'oob." Whatever the significance of the name, Boo Koo is a small locals option in a town of limited food options, serving up a mismash of Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese flavors to folks willing to steer their meal towards Asian-ish dishes, rather than traditional Asian plates. The menu here includes several rice plates, pho, fresh spring rolls, curries and bahn mi and offers plates with either names or flavors that touch on almost every major country in SE Asia. All the food is so-so, but not great and its a mix of of emotions as dishes arrive and are well meaning and cost effective (caveat: for Mill Valley) adequate and filling, and not unlike something prepared in your college dormitory. **REVIEW BASED ON PRE COVID EXPERIENCE** Oh My Goodness! One of my husband's cousin recommended this place stating that we would love this cute little restaurant They were not wrong - we loved it! It was pretty easy to locate, Google Maps took us right to the location. We found parking close by and just walked to the place for pick up. I really liked the décor of it and it went with the whole vibe of the place. Everyone that works here were nice, friendly and gave us their recommendations. It was a fairly long line when we came in but it was moving pretty fast and we were able to get our order in and out in 20 minutes. It didn't have that many seating options. Service was fine, ambiance was nice. Tiger Prawn Rolls: 1 spring roll for $7; tasted fine but the peanut sauce was very inauthentic Chicken Pho: I wouldn't even consider this pho, I'd consider it watery chicken broth Boo Koo Peanut: This is their attempt at recreating vermicelli but again, the peanut sauce was overpowering and didn't taste good. Oh what the phoooo. It's a nice little restaurant with a modern / hip decor offering "Asian street food." Problem is the food here isn't good. The chicken pho I had was barely edible. The broth was bland and tasteless. The chunks of chicken were very dry - and again, bland. I had to dump in generous portions of Sriracha just to get a sense of flavor. The array of appetizers were equally disappointing: chicken wings, dumplings, and summer rolls - all not what I expected. One plus side is it does open late for Mill Valley (read: 10pm on a Saturday).. but set your expectation low if you're visiting. read more

Boo Koo is the definition of a hidden gem we happened to stumble upon on vacation. The menu is thorough in choices and modestly priced for the area. We came here twice, the first time we got an order of vegan spring rolls and cup of the coconut shroom soup to share, and each a chicken pho. It was the perfect amount of food for hungry travelers - we even had leftovers. The spring rolls were delicious and the coconut shroom soup is what brought us back! It is incredibly flavorful and rich. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The chicken pho was light and you can tell the broth was homemade with care. If you're in Mill Valley definitely check out Boo Koo. They have a great bar service and night atmosphere too. The staff is friendly. Overall great experience - something hard to come by these days. read more

Nice little place, was there for Tam High Freshman Parent's Social, so got a little bit crowded, but the food provided was DELICIOUS! 5 years since my last dining experience here. Unfortunately, my review (from 2014) is exactly the same. I'm sorry, Boo Koo - I wish I could like you more. But after a few dates, I'm just not feeling the chemistry. Maybe it's one of those "it's not you, it's me" situations. What ever the case, I've picked up food to go from this restaurant three different times, and my experience is always underwhelming. But before I kvetch too much, let me first focus on the positive. 1) They're centrally located in downtown Mill Valley. 2) They're one of the only Asian "street food" spots in town for quick grub-on-the-go (whether it's a Banh Mee, salad, or soup). 3) I dig the lighthearted funkiness of their decor, and I think they make the most out of a small kitchen space. 4) Their sandwich and soup prices are mostly under $10 (which is a rarity in Mill Valley). 5) The service is fast and friendly. Unfortunately, I haven't had a dish on Boo Koo's menu yet that's truly wow-ed me. Their Banh Mees are pretty run-of-the-mill. Sure, they feature your choice of pork, chicken, salmon, and a variety of other proteins, and they're topped with jalapenos, marinated carrot & daikon, cilantro, chili aioli on a French roll. But I don't know - there's something that's still missing from this sandwich. It just feels too Americanized. For example, I can get an amazing Banh Mee for half the price in the Tenderloin that's twice as good. On my most recent visit, I had the Thai Beef Salad (Grilled flank steak, marinated carrots & daikon, mixed greens, red cabbage, peanuts, nuoc cham) for $12.95. The beef was over-cooked and tough to chew, and the rest of the salad was swimming in dressing. I also ordered the Special Chicken Wings as a starter. They were decent. But the word "special" definitely didn't come to mind. All in all, I'm glad that Boo Koo has made a home in Mill Valley. We need more affordable restaurants in this town. I truly want it to succeed, and I really want to like their food. But sadly, I just ain't feelin' it yet. read more

We've been to Book Koo a ton of times since they opened. We've eaten there a lot but also have gotten take out too! We recently moved near by and we love that we can walk there. The food is always very good! Lately they have had pork buns on their special menu and they are delicious! I'm hopeful that they become a regular menu item! Brussel sprouts are mildly spicy and very yummy. The GCN is a favorite with or without an added protein. There are so many options! We love the beer selection and the Kombucha is great too. Ah I really wanted to like this place, but literally it was just ok. Not authentic in the least, which is fine, but not really executed well either? Allow me to explain... I've been here a couple times now and have left underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, the atmosphere is cute, the service is good, a little slow though, but friendly and adivising which is a plus. Now to the really important part, the food. I've ordered pho and chicken wings and both were kinda blah. I love a meal when it takes me somewhere, whether it's somewhere I've been or not. Flavors are bland or didn't really make sense to me. The pho was bland and the chicken wings left me confused. I guess if you have nothing else in the area and want a quick semi unexpensive eat then this will do it. As locals, we believe in supporting our neighborhood restaurants. Many are still struggling to come back. BooKoo is solid for "fast-casual" with flavor. Price is right, especially in Southern Marin, but the real stand-out here is service. The young team of Bennett, Collin and Brando (spelling?) provided exceptional service. As it was my sister and I's last day in Mill Valley we decided to explore some of the Asian cuisine and chose to try BooKoo. The aesthetic of the restaurant was classy yet comfortable. I enjoyed the overhead hanging lightbulbs and the quiet atmosphere. However, the cuisine didn't match the ambience. I ordered the NorCal Pad Thai and disliked how you had to buy meat separately from the meal. Furthermore, when the food arrived, each item was separated and I found it difficult to mix the dish armed with only chopsticks and a fork. When I tasted the dish, I found that the random greens tasted unsettling with the rest of the dish. Ultimately, I wouldn't recommend BooKoo to my peers. read more

I've always wanted to love Boo Koo but the flavors are pretty bland. My daughter likes the potstickers and the Pho so we continue to go but this last trip may be my last. I ordered the Keto bowl. It was made up of cauliflower rice and what seemed like frozen peas and carrots from a bag. I don't eat egg so I got steak on top and that was delicious. The real problem was the size of the portion (see pics) particularly given the ridiculous price. I tried to speak directly to the Founder who graciously offered a refund which I never received and I never heard back from him. He also defended it saying all portions were measured and it was just in too big of a bowl (oh and that it 'cooks down'). Ridiculous! A salmon banh mi with bad and dense foccaia-like bread and no flavor for just 3x the price? Such a disappointment. Even the $10 pork banh mi managed to be gross in both flavor and texture. I really wanted to like this place because of its proximity to home and lack of any other Asian food places in Marin, but sadly there's little to no Vietnamese or Thai flavors in any of the dishes. And considering I'll typically settle for average or sub par Vietnamese food, and can overlook the cost purely for convenience sake to somewhat satiate my craving, that's saying a lot. Like some other Yelpers have mentioned, everything tastes the same and is totally bland. In dishes where there's supposed to be fish sauce (a staple of Viet and Thai cuisine) they used either soy sauce or some watered-down sugary variation of a sweet Thai chili sauce. I get that it's fusion and expected it to be more Americanized but it still needs to be seasoned properly! In terms of service, well let's put it this way... when I go to a REAL Viet place, I typically expect rude, rushed, standoffish service, but I don't mind because they're fast and they get the order right. However, at this place, the cashier seemed to barely even know the menu items. We ordered 2 dishes and an app to share (no customization) and I read it straight from the menu. When she didn't seem to understand, I pointed at it on the chalkboard next to the register. After about a 20 min. wait for "fast food", we got our food but one of them was wrong and we were missing the appetizer. So while we ate our main dishes, we waited another 10 min. for the app to show up. They definitely earned the Boo in Boo Koo. read more

I just don't like restaurants that have flies buzzing around everywhere... it creeps me out. I had the gcn $11.20 = Eggless wheat noodles, vegetables, green curry, lime-cilantro crush and not so spicy ginger beef. It was full of flavor, filling, fresh and a great lunch. With it I had the Sublime Soda $2.25 which was basically a homemade lime soda. The person I was with had the mighty mint salad $7.95 that had cucumber avocado mango mint and lettuce. Light, refreshing and had i ordered it i probably would have added the marinated flank. They also had the Fuzzy G $2.25 which was a ginger lemongrass soda. read more

Am I the last to know? Oh, Charlie! If only I'd found you sooner! Organic, nearly-fast food & in Marin! Yes, I'm beyond excited. I love, love bahn mi sandwiches, but I'm always disappointed with the amount of pork fat in them. (Yes, I realize that's authentic, but why does it have to be?) Well, that doesn't happen here. I have had the best bahn mi sandwich here (too many times to count now I'm delighted to say) with the traditional pork, but better than traditional because it is slow cooked & positively superior to any other. The jalapenos on the side & other spicy condiments add all the flavor anybody should need in my humble opinion. The guy hustling does it with such a smile you can't help getting sucked in to his chill vibe. The breeze & happy decor along with the reggae or whatever happy music of the day is being pumped doesn't hurt either. The order taker has had some communication issues. I have no idea why Little Dan Noodles have arrived with rice & no noodle at all, but there are never any complaints as the good food is just that, but tack on *really* as in REALLY good. I adore veggies, but can also be quite the carnivore when I know the meat was raised with a smile. You just can't go wrong with organic & local. The drinks are pricey, but I still can't give less than five stars. This is one of those places I just can't overdose on the good eats. read more
