FANTASTIC espresso! And a century old Probat roaster: OG FTW! Definitely worth a stop: support your local roaster!

Cutest place ever with lots of history, great prices, caring staff, and amazing tea and coffee! Honestly this place should be a museum, I talked with an employee (who is actually a volunteer who just loves the company) and found out that The Good Coffee Company started at the same time as Starbucks, so it is really a part of Seattle coffee history! They've apparently been having a hard time since COVID and the long-time owner passed away, so would highly recommend stopping and showing this place some love and support! They have extremely reasonable prices and a nice selection of coffees (including green coffee) and loose leaf teas, all great quality, as well as some equipment for home brews! Heads up that they only take cash or check, but they'll also grind your coffee for you (or you can just get the beans). Really feels like a special place and piece of history that I hope more people will discover!

Thanks to Yelpers. This was indeed a fascinating place to visit and a great source to buy your coffee beans and tea. This modest coffee & tea place has been in business for 50 years - since 1971 (same year as the establishment of Seattle Best Coffee & Starbucks). While it does not have a cafe, I wondered why locals including myself, who had been making our own cup of coffee never got to know about this place, that is deep in Seattle's coffee history. I sampled their espresso and it was very good - bold and smooth. Hands down, it's definitely much better than Starbucks. They're only open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and (possibly - call first) Sundays when they are roasting. Cash only. Highly recommended!

Excellent old-school roaster that makes divine dark roasts. My partner hates dark roasts and is singing about what I've been brewing with my booty from here.

    Great Coffee inside those doors.

Definitely come check this place out. It's not your typical shop with seats and wifi, but you'll be glad you came. Been there since 1972

Unlike the majority of coffee shops I've tried in Seattle, Hello Em has ample parking right on the same street, which was a HUGE relief when I was running hungry and borderline hypoglycemic. When I walked in earlier this morning, I was warmly greeted by a staff member who, after I mentioned it was my first visit, thoughtfully walked me through their top-selling items. Bonus: while waiting for my food and beverage, I explored and was mesmerized by the beautifully curated aesthetic and Vietnamese decor, which was thoughtfully designed and made my wait enjoyable. I ordered an iced Cà Phê Brûlée (torched egg coffee), which turned out to be such a creamy, decadent treat once I stirred the torched top into the strong roast beneath it. For food, I was torn between the Sữa đặc (condensed milk) Pandan Croissant and the Ăn Sáng (breakfast) croissant so I decided to just order both. The Pandan Croissant was sweet and buttery, while the Breakfast Croissant was a protein-rich, savory blend of honey ham, Chả lụa (Vietnamese ham), omelet, and a light spread of mayo. I left full, caffeinated, and BEYOND impressed. If you're after high quality Vietnamese coffee and pastries paired with warm, attentive service, Hello Em is well worth the trip!!!!

The coconut water matcha was absolutely delicious. It was refreshing, flavorful, and easily the highlight of my visit. The café itself is also very cute and culturally immersive, with a thoughtful Vietnamese identity that I genuinely appreciate as someone who is Vietnamese. That said, the baristas gave off a noticeably unfriendly and slightly dismissive vibe. I understand that some cafés lean into the aloof, hipster-barista atmosphere, but this felt unnecessary. It is still a coffee shop, and a little warmth would make the experience much more welcoming. I am still giving Hello Em four out of five stars because the drink was fantastic and the space is beautiful. However, I had the same impression during my first visit years ago, so I hope the service improves before it becomes part of the café's reputation.

Definitely a hopping place at the end of the workday. It's got a darker ambiance and it's cozy. It has indoor, outdoor, and patio seating, though we chose to stay indoor. Pro tip - the poofs make you sit REALLY low. The food choices around 1pm were dismal, and limited. Maybe they'd sold out, or maybe they just don't have a lot there, but nothing even looked fresh enough to warrant purchase. The other thing that killed me was the service. There was one person on the entire 4 hours I was there, and it made for an incredibly slow experience. It was friendly enough, if not a little dismissive. Prices are reasonable and there is paid parking across the street, but take that with a "for Seattle" caveat.

The staff at the time were warm (Michael was the best), knew regulars by name, and made every visit feel special. The coffee was excellent and it felt like a true neighborhood gem. Over time, the people who made this place so memorable moved on, and with them went the quality and the warmth. I opted to support other local coffee shops instead. I returned recently to use a reward I had accumulated, excited to see how things had changed since my last visit. When I asked to check my rewards balance before ordering, I was told I could only do so after completing the transaction. Every other coffee shop I frequent allows this beforehand, so I pushed back to clarify. What followed was one of the most unwelcoming interactions I have experienced at any business. The staff member's tone was hostile and dismissive from the moment I asked a simple question, and it did not let up. I felt uncomfortable enough to cancel my order entirely. When I asked for a receipt to confirm my refund, she threw it away in front of me. A colleague had to ask her again on my behalf, and she snapped that she had already discarded it. Another customer standing nearby witnessed this exchange and looked visibly appalled. I reached out to the owner privately before leaving a public review, hoping to have a real conversation. She chose not to follow up with me about my experience. Instead, she wrote back to say she had already spoken with her staff and that a separate customer had contacted her to say I was the problem, and that her team had handled everything with grace. She closed by suggesting I had not met a basic standard of respect. I want to be clear: the customer she referenced appeared to be acquainted with the barista. I will leave readers to draw their own conclusions about whose account was actively sought out. I also want to note that I am not alone in this experience. Other reviewers here have flagged the same pattern of cold, unwelcoming service at this location. That tells me this is not an off day. It is worth reading those reviews before you visit. The refund for items that were never made has still not been processed, four days later, which caused me to have to reach out to an owner again. I have now been refunded. I share all of this because I think people deserve to know what to expect, both at the counter and if something goes wrong. This is not the place I once loved, and the ownership's response confirmed that.

Boona Boona inhabits this territory with admirable commitment. The space is undeniably curated--every chair, surface, and design choice seems to have undergone a rigorous internal audit for maximum urban cool. Unfortunately, the coffee itself feels rather blasé, as though it were merely incidental to the aesthetic project, had high hopes but fell short. One senses that considerable effort has gone into cultivating the idea of a coffee shop, while the actual coffee is left to fend for itself. The larger issue is the insistence on hipness. There is something faintly exhausting about the whole performance: the studied minimalism, the knowing atmosphere, the sense that you have wandered onto a particularly well-lit side street in Brooklyn circa 2014. And, with affection to Seattle, this isn't NYC. It doesn't need to cosplay as one. To be fair, there is plenty to admire if your primary concern is atmosphere and Instagrammability. But coffee should ultimately taste like something worth getting out of bed for, rather than merely providing a prop for the room. The irony is that there is actually a thoughtful and genuinely worthwhile mission beneath all the carefully curated café affectations: supporting African coffee growers, cultivating community, and preserving East African coffee traditions. Which makes the relentless performance of coolness feel somewhat unnecessary. The substance is there; I simply wish the coffee experience felt as compelling as the mission statement.
