I wanted to like this so bad. I was a Wong Fu Productions fan so watching them build a restaurant chain from Youtube to brick and mortar was gratifying considering the emphasis they took to recipe development. But the flavors are not complimenting each other for me. They are decidedly bold, but almost too bold. They're abstracted from traditional dishes like mapo tofu, and I wonder if making a chinese-american hybrid is the best basis to honor something tied to identity, nostalgia and home-style food. I get the idea behind the menu concept, it's well thought out and in line with the legacy ethos of Wong Fu Productions. Especially because the ethno-targeted audience that is expected to recognize these flavor profiles are primarily asian american, you would think that an asian-american fusion restaurant and drinks chain makes sense conceptually, but in praxis it remains questionable. Tofu + cheese + sichuan pepper sauce + tater tots is just not the best combination in order to highlight the key flavor points you want to come across. Like I see it, everything on the menu is some variation of like Asian proteins with American bases, but it would be more palatable to expand this to like a family restaurant or study space for students to let the dishes speak for themselves, not everything needs to be sandwiched, fried or in cheese. So for me it's one of those restaurants that had a lot of hype with okay food but there's great interior design, the menu is clearly formatted and has a margin for dietary restrictions, and the staff are well trained and attentive. The drink was good, so I would focus on ordering your beverages here. They have great ingredients and being bold with their beverage flavor profile is how they differentiate themselves from other boba shops. read more

We came around noon, there was no one ahead of my group nor in the back of us. The cashier wasn't really nice when we ordered. Our food and three of our drinks came pretty quick. Then a group order after us in person and all received their drinks and left before we did. We waited a good 10 minutes after the food came out for the remaining two drinks. My sister ordered their large Ba-la Matcha (my usual order from here) and I decided to try their Frankie Matcha. Frankie's matcha is blueberry-flavored and while I could definitely taste the blueberry, I thought it overpowered the matcha. Again, Ba-la matcha never disappoints with its guava juice. I've been eyeing Bopomofo for a while since I've been a huge WongFu Pro fan for the longest time so when I heard Phil was opening a cafe I was in. I never had the chance to go though since San Gabriel was quite a distance from me. When they opened this location I kept bugging my friend to go with me until we finally did New Year's Eve and this past weekend and both times have been great. Service is fantastic with a really nice and personable staff. They are quick and efficient which is awesome with how busy this place gets. It's a bit small but if you go on a slow day you're guaranteed a spot and is a cool place to study or even hang out with a small group. First time I tried the sesame drink and it was so interesting. It was savory and sweet in all the right ways. The spicy popcorn chicken was also fantastic with a bunch of different flavors and a bit of a kick. This last time we got the Happy New Years and it was such an interesting mix of flavors, in a really good way. It was tangy and sweet and just so full of flavor. The honey walnut shrimp burger is also the definition of perfection. I could not recommend this place enough. I really enjoyed the corn ilke and taste just like authentic corn milk. The strawberry flavor was really light and does not add too much to the taste. Really nice flavor profile. Popcorn chicken was perfectly fried. Shrimp burger was excellent. The sauce added just the right level of spiciness. Line was a bit long on a weekday afternoon Ordered Taiwanese breakfast sausage sandwich, popcorn chicken , minced meat pork rice. Drinks as bala matcha I must say with all the hype it was a bit underwhelming. Definitely on the pricier side given the trendiness. I personally think the popcorn chicken was nicely fried but lacked the Taiwanese flavor. So essentially was a bit bland. Adding the cilantro sauce just didn't go together with the dish. Tried bfast sandwich. The sausage has a funky flavor to it. Not the Taiwanese sausage that I had expected. Mince meat rice was bit salty. Meat was large chunks. Generally minced meat is minced for a reason. Bala matcha was not super exciting either I think this place is worth a try once. But probably won't be back anytime soon. Placed a pick up order online during the week for work lunch and it was so easy! The store was nicely decorated. Plaza parking on site (it's next to jolibii). I tried their "Hey Sesame Milk"- the sesame limited edition drink for the first time with Kay milk and it was really good! You can taste the actual sesame in there which was nice. (I wish I asked for less ice though as by the time I got home, my drink got kind of diluted lol.) Also highly recommend the walnut shrimp burger and Taiwanese spicy chicken burger! Nom nom nom. My personal favorite is their strawberry corn milk - you would think corn would be a weird flavor but it's very creamy and refreshing. My friend got their seasonal Pb & J noodles and enjoyed it. I had a bite and thought it was reminiscent of a deconstructed spring roll with peanut sauce. I enjoyed my mapo tots. The tots were incredibly crispy and it had a good kick to it without being too spicy. There are limited seats inside so you may need to wait for a spot to open up during busy times or sit outside. I'm so impressed with the food at BPMF! The honey walnut shrimp burger and lurou fan were my favorite, paired with the bala (guava) matcha! The shrimp burger had a thick shrimp patty jam packed with shrimp as you can see. The sauce had a hint of wasabi which was a great addition along with the jalapeños. The quality of the food here is superb! My mom who is Taiwanese even mentioned how the lurou rice is very traditional and had great flavor. She said many fusion places lose the traditional tastes when they combine cuisines, but BPMF does a fantastic job incorporating these traditional Taiwanese spices and flavors and reinventing them in new ways. The meat in the lurou is so tender and flavorful. The bala matcha was my favorite drink. So wonderfully creamy with a burst of guava flavor! Went on a late night boba run and had never tried Bopomofo before. I got the Frankie's Matcha which honestly was so good. The quality and flavor was so nice. I loved how the blueberry complemented the matcha flavor so well. You can also adjust the sweetness which I got 50% and it was perfect. My friend and I definitely want to come back to try their other drinks and eat the tots because they looked so good.
