Got the vegetarian mapo tots and vegetarian popcorn chicken with ChaiChata seasonal drink and everything was great! The impossible meat in the mapo tots was a little sparse and but the oozy cheese, crunchy tots and soft tofu made up for it. The numbing, spicy flavor of traditional mapo tofu is not really there but the tots are still delicious regardless. The vegetarian popcorn chicken was the best item. I got it with the basil dip and it was perfectly crisp. A must have! The ChaiChata was nicely flavorful with kick of spice to it that most places that offer chai fail to get right. This drink is dairy free but if you do get a different drink, there's no cost to substitute oat milk which I really appreciate when everywhere else is charging up the wazoo for milk substitutions. I enjoyed the drinks at their San Gabriel location! So when I heard they were opening a second cafe in Artesia, I knew I had to come back to try more items on their menu. You can find Bopomofo in a plaza along South Street. Jollibee, Pepper Lunch, and Fresh Catch Seafood Market are some of the other tenants here. Parking was plentiful, we had no trouble finding a spot near the front. I expected a long wait, but thankfully there was no line on a Saturday around 4PM. Limited seating inside, with some chairs outside. Our orders were completed within seven minutes. Sweetness can be adjusted based on preference for all drinks, and less ice can be requested. Toppings options are limited, they only had egg pudding besides boba. $1.00 extra for a large size. Oat milk substitution is free, which is commendable considering many places still charge for it. We tried: BA-LA Matcha - A layered drink with guava nectar at the bottom, lactose-free milk in the middle, and matcha on top. After mixing all the layers together, you get a delicious concoction of sweetness, creaminess, and earthiness. For the most part all three complement each other well, but I think the guava does come out as the more prominent flavor. Blueberry Cooler - Seasonal item for the summer. Blueberry capote, lemonade, and muddled mint. It tasted fresh and natural; perfect for the hot weather. I ordered the matcha latte w/ oat milk (they don't charge extra for mil subs) and boba. The texture of the boba was nice and chewy and I enjoyed the taste and sweetness level of the latte. It's a five star for me :) So we made a special stop on our way to LA to drop by Artesia to check out this shop. Came with a group of 5 and we tried the following: Popcorn chicken, minced pork rice, walnut shrimp burger, tater tots, mint matcha latte, regular Matcha, latte, pearl milk tea, and taro milk. First off, I like the space. It is an inviting space for catching up with friends or studying with a big cup of bbt which is something I would totally do. I wasn't sure about the food at first but I was surprised. Everything came out tasty. The spicy popcorn chicken is especially addicting. The minced pork rice had lots of fatty pork in it and the shrimp burger was delicious. The drinks were all really well made. I was so afraid that this place would be overhyped, but it was definitely correctly hyped. I came here on Friday night, and it was my second time coming and it was still delicious. So far, I've only tried a few of the drinks: brown sugar milk tea, coffee milk tea, hojicha latte, and the jasmine milk tea. Jasmine milk tea and the seasonal Hojicha latte were my absolute favorites: they had a very distinct tea flavor without being too bitter. The coffee milk tea was also really good, not too bitter but not overly sweet either. The brown sugar milk tea was on the sweeter side, but again not overly sweet. Service is always great. I always ask what the cashier recommends, and they've always been a great help in selecting my drink choice. I like that they will be honest about what they like and dislike about certain drinks, so that I can make a more informed decision. I heard the news a few months ago that Bopomofo opened up a 2nd shop much closer to OC. I made sure that the hype was over before trying this spot. I thought that it was not going to be as good as the original one but that is not the case. I stopped by here on a Friday during off peak hours with no lines. The parking is easy breezy in the same plaza as Pepper Lunch. I do like the open and airy feel of this new boba shop. The seating area is good for large groups as they have farmhouse style seating. The staff are very pleasant and friendly. I ordered a few drinks for myself and the fam. My favorite is the Strawberry Corn Milk - fresh pressed corn juice with sweetened milk and topped with strawberry sorbet. All the flavors mesh so well and tastes refreshingly good. The coffee milk tea - assam milk tea mixed with a shot of espresso. It was on the lighter side and just ok. The Jasmine milk tea was aromatic and the tea flavors were notable. The taro sweet milk features real taro blended with lactose free milk with a beet juice topping. Not a fan of this one. They have a variety of premium milk teas, espresso, matcha and signature drinks. I was disappointed that one of the seasonal drinks was unavailable. I also tried the spicy popcorn chicken with the chili aioli dipping sauce. I opted for the dark meat and it was tender and flavorful. The spice level was a bit much for me. Got the spicy popcorn chicken, chiayi chicken rice, lu ro rice (not pictured), LA autumn drink (not pictured) and the honey roasted oolong tea (not pictured) and I have to say the quality has gone down. The spicy popcorn chicken was partially filled with just the fry and the chiayi chicken rice was just basically all plain rice with no flavor or chicken (very different from the picture shown on the menu). There are food items here and we tried the popcorn chicken. you can choose spicy or non spicy and white or dark meat. I have tried both the dark and white meat and preferred white meat because it came in little chunks versus dark meat which was much larger pieces and harder to break apart. They also have their own sauce that is very similar to chick fil a sauce to dip in which is bomb. Other than that, I have not tried anything else. Social media have hyped this place up, and my niece who have tried their SGV location highly recommended it. Well, it is totally over hyped, over rated, and over-priced! (At least for this location). I've visited this place twice. During my first visit on a Saturday, there was a long line which took 15 minutes to get to the front register, and another 25 minutes wait for the 2 drinks that I ordered. While in line, I was mentally taking down notes, hating this place for their inefficiency. I also wanted to try their food items, but it would add another 10 minutes to my already 25-minute wait on the drinks. So, I opted for the drinks only, and decided to come back on a weekday to try their food items. It so happened that I met a friend around the area, so I came back on a Wednesday to try their food items. No lines this time, but it still took 20 minutes for the food and drinks. Here's the verdict: BA-LA MATCHA - I love this drink! Consequently, it is also over-priced at $7 for the 24oz with boba. I tried 3 of their drinks so far, and this is the only one I liked. I love the guava nectar flavor of it! Mixed with the matcha, and the result is a perfectly delicious and refreshing drink. The Matcha was of great quality. It didn't have a taste of seaweed flavor like other places that serves low quality matcha drinks. ORANGE WANG - Garbage! I took a sip and hated the mix of orange and milk, and it was too damn sweet. ASSAM MILK TEA - Garbage! I bought this for my son and he didn't like it at all. I took a sip and I didn't like it either. It had a weird herby taste to it. Some might like the weird herby taste, but not me. It is weird AF. CHICKEN SANDWICH - Very Good! The sweet bun enhanced the flavor of the chicken. Terrific taste, but with a terrible price of $12.50. POPCORN CHICKEN - Okay. Nothing extra ordinary. They give you a choice of dark or white meat. I opted for white meat. It came with a green dip which is somewhat sweet and had a similar mayo taste to it, was different, but I personally would've preferred it with sriracha mayo. They should offer it as an option because the green dip that they provide is either a hit or miss; either you love it or you hate it. In my case, I didn't like it. I ate the popcorn chicken by itself and wished I had sriracha mayo available. So far, I only liked one of their drinks, but their classic black milk tea which I find to have an unusual taste, and average at best, defines this place. On the other hand, their Chicken Sandwich is very delicious but pricey at $12.50. Taro sweet milk is literally the best taro drink I've ever had -- I usually get it 75% sweet and that's perfect for me. Walnut shrimp burger and mapo tots are excellent if you're looking for food items. Seasonal drinks that I've tried are also yum! Decent boba shop, but overhyped. I had high hopes for bopomofo given the rave reviews, but I was pretty disappointed by my drink. My friend and I got large sesame milks and it tasted like black sesame milk you can buy from Korean grocery stores. It was good, just nothing unique and not worth the price. If I'm nearby I may stop by to get a drink but definitely would not go out of my way to come here. Also, when I came (a few days before Christmas) there was a sign that there was a promotion in the afternoon, and I had noticed that even though we came in during the supposed time of the promotion (20% off or something) we were not given any discount. I'd previously only gotten the strawberry corn milk before. Solid choice. This time the review is based on the brown sugar pudding milk tea and honey walnut shrimp burger. Pudding milk tea is one of my faves but I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of added sugar that brown sugar milk teas have. Usually you're not allowed to adjust sweetness level when it's a brown sugar milk tea but here ar Bopomofo you are allowed to do that. So I got 25% sweet which was still a little too sweet for me. It was still good. Egg pudding was different Than your usual egg pudding. If you've ever been to Boba Guys, it's similar. More solid and less sweet than a the flan like version I'm used to. I'll prob pay continuge to try different drinks on the menu but this is one I would order again if the mood strikes. The honey walnut shrimp burger is so inspired! Patty is juicy and a good size. There's the candied walnut topping, lettuce, purple onion, mayo, and jalepeno slices which pack a kick of spice. If you can't handle spice well, the mayo does tone it down a bit. The bun is a bit sweet kinda like kings Hawaiian. I loved this burger. It's going to be hard not to order it again since it's so good but I'm curious about the other food items. I guess we'll see what happens the next time I'm here. My only complaint is there's not a lot of seating here. I had brought my laptop to get some work done but all the tables inside were taken. There's two small ones that seat 4 and one large communal one. There is outdoor seating but they are stools and little side tables which are more suited to chatting and at hanging out with friends than getting work done.
