It was the perfect amount of sweetness from the corn and the strawberry puree. Overall, it was a solid drink that I would order again. I saw Bopomofo on the map as early as before I even moved to LA -- it called to me as a place that was uniquely Taiwanese but I never knew what to expect of it. But my friend popped in once and told me how elevated the experience now was compared to when he went when it first opened and said we had to go together. They didn't have the bolo buns the day we went so no chicken sandwich () but I opted to try the honey shrimp burger instead. The bread was fluffy and soft, and the patty was super juicy and shrimpy. The ratios of all of the fillings were absolutely immaculate. I also tried the beef noodle soup sandwich and it totally works. All of the essential beef noodle soup flavors are there and it's a totally different textural experience worth trying. There's free water (you can ask for a cup) if you're not looking to get a drink, and there are plenty of tables. A lot of people are ordering to go so there's usually somewhere to sit and there's WiFi if you're looking to study or work. Not the quietest place to be and as the sun goes down it gets really bright, but it still works if all of the factors come together. Came here with a group on Monday. I ordered the Carrot Matcha Latte and Jasmine Milk Tea. The jasmine milk tea could use stronger tea flavor to milk ratio but that is just my personal preference. Food wise, we ordered the classic mapo tots and the popcorn chicken bento. The food took an hour to come out and the popcorn chicken bento was cold by the time I received the food. My sister and I constantly go to Bopomofo Cafe whenever we crave some popcorn chicken or boba! We came a little late this day so we got a popcorn chicken to go and just ate it in the car. This day, particularly, the popcorn chicken batter coating the outside wasn't as crispy and fried as usual which I was missing but it's still good! I usually get a Strawberry Ginger Lemonade as a classic, and a few seasonal drinks whenever they're in season! TIP: The parking lot is sometimes crowded so a lot of people are parking on the street or in the Jack in The Box parking lot! In addition, UNTIL the end of 2024, when you purchase $30+ or more, you can get a free milk tea! If you go on Bopomofo's Insta, they have a picture that you can show for the free milk tea! One day there were NO lines, so I took the opportunity to stop by to see what the fuss was all about! Plus, my Yelp friend Ms. Bobolicious recommended this spot (Hi Pamela!), so here was my opportunity. Thank you to the kind staff member that assisted me. She patiently and enthusiastically explained their menu to me as a line was forming behind me; she didn't rush but I was a little nervous, lol. Bopomofo cafe is a small and cute restaurant. They have both  flavorful chicken and refreshing drinks menu. The indoor and outdoor seating are both comfortable. The service is fast and convenient. Our server was a very nice and helpful young lady. She advised us to order their new combo of chicken sandwich and Mapo tote, instead of ordering them separately. It was really a good idea.We got the following; -2Chicken sandwich combo with Mapo tots. The sandwiches were appetizing and delightful. A modern fusion snacking spot that I'm sure most have at least heard of on social media seeing as it is co-owned by Phil Wang, mastermind of Wongfu. But let's ignore that for a moment and review objectively. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 9/10 It's a small little shop in San Gabriel but definitely has a neo modern vibe. There is some seating, total maybe 20 seats. I really like the custom 626 light against the wall making a good centerpiece. SERVICE: 8/10 Friendly staff overall that knew the menu well. My one knock was by 5pm they were out of a few of the stuff on the menu! Some of this speaks to how popular it must be, but also is a negative due to poor overall planning. FOOD: 8/10 Strawberry Corn Milk - 8/10 - Corn milk seems to a be a new trend in the world of boba and Asian drinks overall. And I kind of like it. I am a fan. It is just capitalizing on a trend, sure but I like the corn flavor with the combination of strong strawberry hints too. Good drink. Beef Noodle Soup Sandwich - 10/10 - I basically came in after seeing this being reviewed on YouTube. Let's talk about everything before even the food itself. Conceptually, this is a genius idea. Beef tastes like Taiwanese beef noodle soup beef. I mean they probably literally just used the same beef. Good. Soup? It is like a more concentrated version of Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Not sure if it is purposeful or not, but that is the right choice here. Dunk the sandwich into it like a Portillo's dipped sandwich and it's pretty much perfect. Mapo Tater Tots - 7/10 - Once again, great concept. A little sparse on the meat, it is mostly tofu, but that's fine. Execution is a little lacking. Mapo is saucy, yes, which makes some of the tots soggy. Not good. Some are still crispy and have that good flavor. Satisfactory. I'm not sure if I can advise a better way for this. Maybe put the mapo in the center and surround it with tots? But then the flavor isn't well mixed. I'm not sure. But mixed soggy and crispy tots is downer. It took me 5 years to update this review because I never wanted to come back after one of the owner, Phil had blasted my first review on his Instagram about how I didn't care about the Earth. You can read it for yourself, I just wanted a straw that works! I also would've preferred if they reached out to me directly about my review than posting it on social media where I found out through my friends and couldn't respond. Anyways, it's been a long time and I decided to try them out again; so this is my update. First of all, they have upgraded their straws to bamboo fiber straws and they are 1000x better than a dingy paper straw that disintegrates. Another thing I like is that they kept their menu fairly simple with some innovative drinks and food items. I ordered the Spicy Taiwanese Fried Chicken Sandwich with upgraded Mapo Tots ($20). This combo was great as I got to try two of their signature items without ordering them separately. The sandwich was solid and I liked that it was served on a bolo-like bun without the messy crust, but what surprised me was the mapo tots. I know, I was skeptical at first too, but it somehow works and I liked the comparison of it to chili cheese fries. No, the tots aren't soggy either with the layer of cheese separating the toppings. To wash everything down, I had the Ba-La Matcha ($7.75 for large). The guava flavor is very light, but keeps the integrity of the matcha flavor. I've always wanted to try this place, and I found myself in the area so I just had to go. I wanted to try something different, so I went with the BA-LA Matcha, which was a guava matcha latte drink. It was good, I would like to go back to try their hojicha corn menu items. Guy in the front was helpful with my questions, and they were decently busy for a Sunday night. He helped me pick my sweetness levels for my drink and assureed I waited around 5 minutes for my drink. There was a good amount of seating. I'll start by saying Bopomofo is my #1 recommendation for all my friends/family visiting the LA area. It always impresses/delivers because of 1) their creative menu offerings and 2) the quality. Menu: I drive from LA to SGV whenever I crave their Walnut Shrimp burger + Mapo Tots combo and I get excited to pair it with a different drink each time (the Hey Sesame Milk never fails as a go-to though). I haven't seen another restaurant continue to innovate and perfect their menu as much as Bopo. Quality: if you follow Bopo's social media you'll see how transparent they are about all their ingredients. This is a huge deal for me and you can honestly taste the difference from other boba shops. On a personal level, I'll support Phil any chance I get. He played such a big role in shaping my own identity growing up and while he's a celebrity in his own right (...spend 30 min in the cafe and you'll see how many people line up to take photos with him), I've always seen him make time for everyone no matter how busy he is. They say never meet your heroes...but Phil is different. I always look forward to the chance I get to chat with him for a few minutes - he's super down to earth and he genuinely cares about the community he serves. 10/10! Love having the choice of dark or white meat for the popcorn chicken--that was the icing on the cake! I originally came for the Shrimp Burger but ended up ordering a few items since it was a bit of a drive. Hands down, this place is in my top 10 tea and chicken restaurants. The popcorn chicken was authentic and true to its culture, and the Jasmine Milk Tea was super smooth, perfectly steeped, and well-balanced once mixed. But what really stole the show was the Shrimp Burger! I've never had anything like it before, and honestly, I don't think I'd want to try it anywhere else, lol. Total is $21 + tax & tip, which is a little hefty in price. The burger was of decent size, and the taste was pretty good. I like the little spice to it and didn't feel too heavy despite it being fried. I think the mapo tots were a bit too heavy for my taste though, and I think I would prefer the ma po tofu on rice instead. The flavor was good too, but I think the mix just wasn't for me. Next time I would just get the tots by itself. The tots by itself are good. Overall, it was a good meal though. I think it's a bit overpriced, but I really liked my burger. 3.5 stars for my updated review. Been here a couple more times since my last review and tried the Artesia location. 1. Drinks can be inconsistent. I usually order the Assam milk tea half sweet with boba. Sometimes it's not enough tea flavor and tastes more like milk. Sometimes it tastes more watered down. The boba texture is also inconsistent each time but passable. 2. Heritage Lu Rou Fan - taste was good, but portion was really small. I ordered that expecting to be filling because I was looking for a meal to eat but I was still hungry after even though I'm not a big eater. I couldn't justify ordering another food item. Another issue I had was that the rice stuck to the piece of parchment paper they lay on the tray before putting the food in. I get it's so the oil or moisture doesn't seep through to the tray as quickly but it was unpleasant trying to pick rice off the paper. 3. Pineapple Toast Crunch - I had high expectations because it sounded so good. I was so disappointed and turned off by how much deep-fried oil I was tasting. I barely tasted the pineapple jam. The fruit compote didn't save it for me. My stomach was not happy after that. 4. Taiwanese Fried Chicken Sandwich - so far the best food item I've tried. The bolo bun is more like the crust of a bolo bao, still crisp, over a thin brioche-like bun. The somewhat cold slaw sits on top of a nicely fried chicken piece, neither of them overpowering the other, just complementary in crunch, temperature, and taste. The aioli was pretty bomb too. I didn't order the spicy fried sandwich version which looked like the fried chicken coating would be spicy, but I can totally picture a spicy aioli paired with the regular fried chicken. 5. Honey roasted oolong milk tea - not bad, similar to the assam milk tea in that the tea doesn't stand out much and texture is more on the watery side. The food and drinks are high quality and a little pricey. However, you get what you pay for and it is worth it for an occasion special treat. I decided to try Bopomofo again today with my husband, and the drinks we had were really unique and delicious! We got the summer blossom green tea and the ba-la matcha. My husband was super mindblown at how well the guava, lactose-free milk, and matcha paired together to be so creamy. The summer blossom green tea was sweet and refreshing, perfect for the warm weather. The decor inside of Bopomofo is super cool, and I love their 626 neon sign that changes to say 626 in Chinese and bopomofo as well. I think the pricing for their drinks is fair given that most higher quality boba stores are around the same price, and I appreciate the quality of the ingredients, distinctive menu items, and eco-friendly straws that don't disintegrate in 5 minutes. As a fellow Taiwanese-American who grew up watching Youtube, I have been a fan of Wong Fu since high school, so I wanted to visit and support Bopomofo since Phil first announced its inception and opening. It's been amazing to see how much Bopomofo has grown and expanded over the last few years, yet continued to maintain their quality and strong connection with the surrounding local Asian-American communities. I always love the amazing food and drinks at Bopomofo. My friend and I went at 8pm after pickle ball and it definitely fulfilled our boba and food cravings. I always love their drinks for their natural sweetness like carrot matcha and strawberry corn where I really don't see anywhere else. Came here on a whim one evening and ordered the honey roasted oolong milk tea with boba, and my partner ordered the Frankie's matcha. Wasn't too busy. I really loved my drink, the sweetness level (ordered 50%) was perfect and the boba pearls were the perfect chewy consistency. One of the best milk teas I've had in a while! The Frankie's matcha was less impressive, I found the combination of flavors jarring and the blueberry especially was a strange addition. So so good when first tried years ago! Tried the strawberry corn milk and strawberry matcha i think. They were non dairy too i believe. But the star of the show was the honey walnut shrimp burger!! At the time, they had used bigger chunks or regular sized walnuts which I didn't really like. I think i tried their popcorn chicken and mapo tots too. I gotta look back at my old pics. They were all in all, very good too. On this recent visit though, the honey walnut shrimp burger was still pretty good! I was surprised how there was jalapeno but it wasn't over powering or spicy; the walnuts were chopped finely and i didn't notice it in there. The shrimp was still flavorful and distinct. Amazing!!! The drinks this time, however, were just all right. Mine was better-- the hojicha corn oat milk, while my husband's B.O.G. was lacking a bit. Not as good as a regular POG in hawaii lol. But overall, will definitely try to come back and try their vegan options as well! Please make a restaurant in the inland empire too!! lol. read more

Been following WongFu for years and finally got to try out bopomofo! Recommend: strawberry corn milk: 5/5 if you know asian desserts with corn you know it's the best blend of milky and sweet! would deff get again blueberry slush: 4.5/5 good blend of tart and sweet mapo tots: 5/5 - i loved the spicy mapo and tator tot mix! walnut shrimp burger: 4/5 i like the shrimp mix and condensed milk but i wish it had more walnuts for that classic walnut texture / taste, also wish i got it without pickles - it had a ton and overpowered some of the taste taiwanese chicken sandwich: 3.5/5 chicken is very juicy but the flavor isn't very strong, just an average sandwich overall im impressed with the quality of this place! it is all a little on the pricy side (sandwich + tots combo will be $20 plus $6-7 for boba) but its to be expected given the clout with the name the service was super nice. the inside is decorated with some local art, seating is available both inside and out. we went on a tuesday afternoon and there was a steady flow of people but the wait wasn't bad at all read more
