They do ask if peanuts are ok when you order, you can definitely opt out if you don't like texture in your sweet tofu. Bake Sesame Bread with Beef (added pickles)- really good, sesame bread is more of a flaky pastry rather than a fluffy bun. Expect tons of crumbs but really good. Beef is tender and not dry at all. Pickles added a ton of texture another depth; sweet, salty, bit of tang. Fan Tuan always good, I usually opt to add both eggs and pickles. But if I'm not feeling too hungry I could go without egg. The fried egg was cooked well and crispy and the purple rice was moist, chewy, and not mushy. However, what lowered the score for me was the youtiao (Chinese donut) which felt old and was not crispy at all. The fantuan was also smaller than expected. We also shared a large hot sweet soybean milk which was almost scalding when we received it. However, we were warned by the staff about the heat when they handed it to us. I was looking for a Taiwanese breakfast spot and found this one super nearby. We came in on a Sunday morning and it wasn't packed and we were able to order right away. I ordered the Hot Sweet Soybean Milk, Taiwanese Donut, Pan Fried Green Onion Pancake with Eggs, and the Salty Fan Tuan with Purple Rice and Eggs. They have a small seating area where they will bring you your order. You do have the add the sugar to the soybean milk yourself, which is not what I'm used to but I guess it's good that you can control the amount of sugar in the milk. Everything was good, but out of what we ordered, my favorite were the green onion pancake and the fan tuan. The fan tuan is a bit smaller than what I've gotten from other places, but the purple rice adds a bit more aroma to it, and all the flavors just go really well together. I will have to try it with the pickles next time. The green onion was opposite in that it was bigger than what I've gotten at other places, and there's a good amount of egg on it that it's worth the addition. If you eat it with some chili oil and soy sauce it's great. This is probably one of the better places for Taiwanese breakfast that I've had here. The interior looks like an ancient Dry Cleaner where you take your ancient clothing. The Hostess/Cashier/Server has a vibrant huge personality and will guide you through the huge menu. Order anything here as you can't make a mistake. It's cash only, so leave your Credit Union Visa and Centurion Black AMEX at home. Dine in your car with the Flamin' Cheeto crumbs on the seat and a radio that crackles like a Chicharron or better dine inside at one of the few Formica Tables best suited for some Amah's afternoon of Mah Jongg. The kitchen is efficient and everything is fresh and made to order so something simple like Radish Cake with a thin Omelet on top will arrive before you find a spot for your iPhone, car keys and Oakley's. Other, more complex dishes show up after getting lot's of love from the Nainai workin' the Wok out of sight in the back and half glued to an episode of Chen Qing Ling on TV while pleating Dumplings by muscle memory. I started with Silky Salty House Made Tofu poached in a splash of Soy with a tangle of Pork Floss which they should sell at Vons but sadly they don't, Pickled Vegetables, and Crunchy Fried Onion Slivers. This soulful bowl full might be sufficient for breakfast but then you'd miss out on everything else that sound good. I say over order and over eat. And they say Menudo is the cure for drinking past your limit last night at the Bar. This has that beat by a smile and mile. The Silky Salty Tofu is nourishing, delicious, soul settling, brain bathing, soothing soupy, calming comfort food. I impulse ordered one Pork Curry Pastry which was a cute little braided oval of shredded Pork mixed with Taiwanese Dry Curry. Was it akin to Indian Curry of which there are thousands of iterations or a Japanese Curry which is a piquant Cumin forward Vegetable Gravy? Nope, this ain't that. This small pastry football had a simple spice blend with a definite slow poke of warmth to it while maintaining it's Porcine integrity and all inside a Pastry Jacket as flakey as Trump's Merch. A fine nibble. The afore mentioned Radish Cake in an Opera Cape of thin greaseless Omelet is a traditional dish and here their version has no equal. It's an ingot of spongy springy Radish Curd ready for a drool of La Jiao You (Chili Oil). Poke it with your Chopsticks, tear it into bite sized bits and dive into it while it's hot. While I was ripping into the Radish Cake the Scallion Cake showed up also with another skinny Omelet on top. The crisp triangles of flat bready pastry were terrific and even better then next morning reheated in a dry pan slowly until the cracker crisp crunch took an encore bow. The highwater mark for this adventure were the Pork and Napa Cabbage Dumplings. Hot as Space X Booster Rocket. They were lovely wrappers of perfectly steamed dough stuffed with a huge porky Meatball and oozing loads of luscious juice. Din Tai Fung eat your heart out. You'll need a huge Chinese Soup/Serving Spoon to capture these slippery little Devils. There are 18 breakup Yellow Roses, 18 wheel free spirits who ditched the Corporate World for long haulin', "I'm 18, Honey, and finally legal." and there are 18 precise folds in a classic Dumpling. Not here. Then there are these ragged little beauties, all as different as a litter of Puppies and who cares whether the Dumpling are cookie cutter exact, these Dumplings are the best in the City. I think a 3.5 star yelp rating is a bit harsh compared to other 3 star establishments. This place is old school in how it's run. Cash only, no frills interior. Owner is reasonable, I was a dollar short in getting a few additional items and he said don't worry about it and gave it to me anyway. Came 15 min before close and the owner was super chill and still took our order. We got a purple rice fan tuan and some soy milk, and man both really hit the spot. The inside has a good amount of seating and definitely has Taiwan restaurant vibes, unmarked sauces on each table, everything is hard surfaces making it easy to clean. My one only gripe was the stuff in the display case. We got a gua bao which he warmed up for us in the microwave, but it really tasted like it had passed it's best buy date. Food: The fantuan I got had purple rice and added pickles (trust me, a must to add pickles) and it came out to $7.25 which is pretty pricey considering it's a smaller portion, so I didn't get full. It was so delicious with the sticky rice, the crunchy youtiao, savory pork floss, and the tart but sweet pickles. I just wish there was more of it. Drink: The sweet soy milk (large) was $5.25 and comes in a deli container with a straw which I thought was so funny. It's not that sweet which is great! I wish they gave us the option to add ice to the drink. Overall, delicious meal, but small portions for the price. It's nice to support an old-school institution, so I won't complain too much. There's a ton of other things from buns to dumplings to breads to soups on the menu, too! Would recommend if you're craving Taiwanese breakfast and don't mind the no frills vibes. read more

I was looking for breakfast options since I was staying at a nearby hotel, and Huge Tree Pastry popped up. I read reviews about the fan tuan and instantly became interested. I'm not familiar with Taiwanese cuisine, but I feel like you can never go wrong with a dish made with egg and rice. We got the salty fan tuan with egg and pickles, one with sweet white rice and the other with purple jasmine rice. They were so delicious!! I preferred the sweet white rice more because it has a chewy, sticky texture. But the purple jasmine was good too, especially if you want more of a savory flavor. I'm not the biggest fan of pickles, but it was needed to balance the saltiness from the pork floss. And the donut in the middle added a nice textural difference to the softness of the egg and rice. We loved it so much that we bought 4 to eat on our long journey home to the Bay. One of which was a sweet fan tuan, which just had the donut. It wasn't overly sweet, and it still has a bit of savoriness from the fried donut. As far as portion size, I thought one was more than enough to satiate my hunger. I even shared half the morning I left, and wasn't hungry until I got back 9hrs later (though I did snack on the free chips on Amtrak). I observed the restaurant while I waited for our to-go orders, which btw was like a 5-min wait, and it's definitely a mom-and-pop shop. It's no-frills where you can enjoy your meal alone or with family. And the young woman who took my order is so nice! She was fun to talk with. Been coming here for my fan tuan fix ever since I stumbled upon it over 3 years ago and I don't see an end to that any time soon! They just opened up their dining area again back in June and I'm so excited because we've always just ordered take out since it's been closed due to covid. This is a family owned business and if you go during the weekends (I've haven't been during the week), you'll more than likely be greeted by the owner's daughter's, Lillian, warm smile. She's very welcoming and very patient if you have any questions about anything on the menu! Our go to has to be the fan Tuan with purple rice add both egg and pickled. It's so good that my boyfriend looks forward to it as a weekly end of weekend treat to ward off the Sunday scaries. My grandma and mom will also never say no to fan Tuan from Huge Tree Pastry - that's saying a lot! 3 purple rice fan Tuan with egg and pickle will run you $24.64. Is it a bit pricey? Sure, but what isn't nowadays? Does it taste delicious and is it worth the money? Definitely. Especially knowing that it's supporting a small business and you're getting quality food. We usually just walk in and order but I opted to call in my order this morning. My order was all ready to go by the time I got there! Coming from Norcal, I love that they have more of these simple, no frills Taiwanese spots that don't overcharge. This is my second time returning here! You can't go wrong with their fan tuan. I like to get the purple rice one. It's around $6 (something equivalent in the Bay is closer to $10 and up). Their soy milk is very smooth. The first time I came, they were still only doing take out. But this time, they've reopened the dining area, so you can eat there as well! read more

First-time visit. I politely asked if credit cards or Zelle were accepted. The staff member pointed at the "Cash Only" sign with clear annoyance and an unwelcoming attitude. I went back to my car to gather cash and returned to make a small purchase, but the service remained rude and unpleasant. Very poor customer service. I will not return. read more

Great food to go. Amazing Taiwanese breakfast in East LA. You can dine in or take out. Signature dishes included pan fried egg omelette and beef roll. Super delicious food in a limited parking area. Long standing restaurant that's run by mom and pop small business owners. Love the omelette pancake and sesame bread with green onion egg as well as the purple rice roll.
