We skipped the pricey farm tour (we did coffee farm tours last year and are farmed out) and went straight to the chocolate café. They will give you a five piece tasting for free, either a dark, milk, or sugar-free flight. But why would you come here and just take... When you can also give back to folks in Lahaina rebuilding? So we got two free flights, one milk and one dark. My sweetie added on a drink, a pastry, and some very tasty chocolate and salted caramel gelato. I went with a make your own alcohol pairing, which was so much fun and very reasonable. For about $17, I got a shot of coconut rum with two chocolate pairings and a shot of premium Martiniquan JM volcanic rhum Agricole with another two chocolate pairings. And then I still had my free five pieces. What an amazing taste adventure, for cheaper than the price of a cocktail at a hotel bar or even a locally owned foodie place? I don't want to mess up your tasting - so you pick your favorites! But I normally don't like rhum agricole - and the pairings were such an amazing flavor adventure. Honestly, this is my number one recommendation in West Maui. Give the folks some business and have an amazing time! Oh, and they have jazz on Sunday nights' but I'm sure it's more crowded than than popping in during the day on a weekday. It starts at their building in Lahaina, which has a little café/coffee shop, plenty of chocolate for sale, and a rooftop experience that looked interesting but we didn't get to try. By the time we finished the tour, the kids had reached the "we have successfully experienced enough things today" portion of the vacation. Fair enough. From there, you take a fun little ride out to the cacao farm, and that's where this became much more than "let's go eat some chocolate." Our guide, Andrew (I'm about 95% sure I'm remembering his name correctly!), was fantastic. He seemed genuinely interested in cacao, the process, the company, and what they are doing there. That makes such a difference. He talked about how cacao is grown and processed, the history behind Kuʻia, and a little about founder Dr. Gunars Valkirs and his rather fascinating path to chocolate. Then, of course, there was the tasting. Lots and lots of little squares of chocolate. This is educational work I was willing to undertake. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which particular varieties were my favorites because apparently I was too busy eating them to take adequate scientific notes. What I can tell you is that there really wasn't one I disliked. What surprised me most was how much flavor there could be in chocolate that wasn't buried under a mountain of sugar. The differences and complexity of the cacao actually came through, and it made me think about chocolate completely differently. The chocolate sample they gave us back at the counter was also fantastic, as was the coffee drink we ordered. My only regret is that we didn't buy more chocolate before leaving. Be warned, though: apparently this tour has side effects. I went in expecting a fun Maui family activity where we'd learn a few things and eat some chocolate. I left wondering about cacao varieties, fermentation, processing, climate, chemistry and several other questions that absolutely nobody in my family asked me to investigate. The details: Our tour started by meeting at tree at the Sheraton, which sounds awkward but for us was super convenient and it was fun boarding the sailboat from the beach but you will get a little wet! Captain Michael walks you though the day and then you are off for about ~90 minutes to Lanai. During that time you are served (not a buffet) two meals. The cinnamon rolls were great and the breakfast croissants are now something I make at home. There was also a photographer on board so we took advantage and took some family photos (you buy at the end and I found them a whole lot cheaper and less stress than an actual family shoot). Once you get to the Island you can take a golf cart or take a short walk to the beach where they have all the gear you need. After the safety briefing you have about 2 hours to snorkel with the crew serving as lifeguards in the water. It is VERY easy to lose where you are when you've got your head underwater. I appreciated how attentive the crew was to where the four of us were at since there were a few times we needed some gentle guidance out of a harms way (shoreline rocks). The photographer also captures your snorkel sesh. After snorkeling, you're treated to another full meal of noodles and chicken. Followed by anything you might need for a little seasickness to prep for the journey back . My 12 yo son was pretty full at this point and had befriended the captain who let him help get the boat ready for the return trip. That was very cool! The ride home was a bit bumpy (Hurricane Lowell was coming) but Captain Michael did a great job avoiding anything major and even found a pod of dolphins. We also enjoyed the mai tais! Great experience! We will book more tours in the future. I would have booked another snorkeling or sunset tour during this trip but the water quality really deteriorated with the upcoming storm.

Beers, cocktails, spirits, pretty much whatever you wanted and the crew constantly walked around asking if anyone needed another drink. The heavy appetizers were also way better than I expected for "boat food", chicken katsu, Chinese chicken salad, pasta salad and kalua pork sliders, everything was really good. (No pictures cause I mopped it lol) The cruise itself was around 1.5 to 2 hours and our ride was incredibly smooth, although obviously that'll depend on the weather. They also offer a kamaʻāina discount if you call to book, which brought it to around $100 per person for us. Between the views, legit open bar, surprisingly good food and an awesome crew, I thought it was absolutely worth it. Would do this again in a heartbeat.

It was…read morereally awesome to learn how their mango farm works -- as someone interested in gardening, and especially curious about exploring the "food forest" permaculture side of growing food, it was really educational. She taught us the different plant groups that feed each other, and what order to plant to get the most productivity (and safety! We learned that papaya makes a good windbreak for smaller and more delicate plants, and agave makes a good firebreak!). I wish I lived in Maui because I'd be planting mangoes, papayas, bananas, coffee, and cocoa, RIGHT away. It was wild finding out how fast and tall papaya trees grow! These plants don't grow well in Seattle, but we are still going to take what we learned and see how we can apply similar features for our own food forest. I appreciated the very real perspectives about what works - as well as pitfalls and challenges with their food forest / mango farm. The tour was really interesting and fun, and we even had a resident cat named Tyson who took the tour with us! SO CUTE! The view there was beautiful, and though our tour group was tiny, I could see this being a fun activity for kids and families, too. Enough safe space for little folx to run around safely, and so much is stackable. She let us try mango (and wild mangos), ice cream beans (what an experience!), fresh coffee, and more. So good! They said they are going to do dinner parties here and I look forward to coming back to the Maui mango farm when we visit next time. Hopefully we'll have some good photos to show off of the garden upgrades that they've inspired. Road to Hana is a unique experience that involves driving down a long road (most likely from the…read morenorth side of Maui) down to the town of Hana. Along the way there are a variety of attractions like lush rainforests, waterfalls, hiking areas, and beaches. There are many so you'll have to do your research to find the ones you want to stop at. You will usually drive down the road, stop briefly for the attractions, then get back on the road to the next one. There were many windy and narrow roads and the driving isn't for the faint of heart. Some of the bridges are one lane so you'll have to constantly keep an eye out for cars around corners. I personally wouldn't drive at night and you really have to ensure you don't veer onto the other lane. Driving at slow speeds is a must and requires a lot of concentration. One of the other notable attractions that the road has to offer are the plentiful banana bread shops. We went to Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread which was delicious. It was pretty cool and I'm glad I got to check it out but I wouldn't do it again.

We paid for three full spots for myself, my husband, and my mom. Based on the description of a walking farm tour, we expected a more immersive experience moving through the farm and exploring. Instead, the tour felt much slower paced and involved a lot more standing and listening than we anticipated. Our guide also seemed to lose his train of thought several times, which made the pace feel even slower. We were traveling with our toddler, and once he started having a hard time with the pace, my husband and I took turns leaving the tour and sitting in the car with him so we would not disrupt the other guests. We were trying very hard to be considerate of everyone else while still getting as much out of the experience as we could. I went to speak with staff twice while we were there because I was clearly struggling and trying to figure out what our options were. When I asked about a partial refund, I was told that they expect families to be flexible. We were extremely flexible. We took turns missing parts of the tour, separated from each other, and ultimately left only when our toddler became so exhausted and upset that staying through the meal was no longer realistic. What disappointed me most was the lack of effort to help us find any kind of solution. We paid for three full experiences and ultimately missed the entire meal portion. We were not offered food to go, a chance to come back later for the meal, a rescheduled visit, a credit, or any other accommodation. I understand now that the meal is served in multiple courses and may not have been easy to package all at once, but none of that was explained to us while we were there and no alternative was suggested. I also don't think it should fall entirely on a distressed guest, who has already spent a significant amount of money, to come up with every possible way the business could help. A professional business could have offered several reasonable options, even if a refund was not possible. The customer service after the visit was also disappointing. I emailed afterward asking management to consider a partial refund and received no response. I had to send a second follow-up email simply to get an answer. Only then was I told that management had reviewed the situation and would not offer any partial refund, credit, rescheduling option, or other accommodation. Management's response emphasized that our family made the decision to leave. Of course we made the decision to leave -- our toddler was exhausted and extremely upset, and we did not want to ruin the experience for everyone else. That decision came after we had already spent a significant portion of the tour taking turns away from the group and after I had spoken with staff more than once trying to find a solution. I completely understand that businesses have policies and that traveling with a toddler comes with unpredictability. My disappointment is not about expecting special treatment. It is about the lack of customer service, flexibility, communication, or goodwill shown both during the experience and afterward. For the price of this experience, I expected better communication and more effort to find a reasonable solution. Having to reach out twice just to receive a response declining any accommodation only added to the disappointment. Unfortunately, the way the situation was handled afterward left us with an even worse impression than the tour itself.
