Came here to celebrate my childhood best friend's birthday, and I'm so glad we did! We originally tried a couple of other seafood spots, but they wouldn't seat our group with about an hour and a half left before closing. King Crab Shack was incredibly accommodating and let us make a reservation, which really saved the night. Walking in, I loved the coastal vibe. The fishing nets, nautical décor, wooden booths, and little crab details throughout the restaurant made it feel like you stepped into a seafood shack by the beach. It was clean, spacious, and had a fun atmosphere that fit the meal perfectly. One thing I thought was surprisingly clever was the vinyl bibs. Not only did they have an adorable crab printed on them, but they also had a pocket at the bottom to catch any seafood that inevitably falls while you're cracking shells. The gloves were a perfect touch too! It's a small detail, but it definitely came in handy! The menu had plenty of seafood options at different price points, whether you're looking for a smaller seafood boil or a feast for a group. We ordered two Combo #3s ($99.99 each), Combo #6 ($95.99), a pound of mussels ($18.99), and an extra order of snow crab clusters ($35.99). While seafood isn't cheap, the portions were generous, everything tasted fresh, and it felt like a fair value for the quality and amount of food we received (table of 5). One thing to keep in mind is that the combo meals have set seafood combinations, so there isn't much flexibility to mix and match items. It wasn't a dealbreaker for us, but it's something worth knowing if you're hoping to customize your combo boil. We all chose the Garlic Butter Crazy Cajun seasoning at a medium spice level, and I highly recommend it. The garlic butter gave everything a rich, buttery base while the Cajun seasoning layered in smoky, savory slices with just the right amount of heat. The medium spice definitely lets you know it's there, but it never overpowered the seafood. Instead, it built gradually and complemented the natural sweetness of the crab, lobster, shrimp, mussels, and crawfish. Every bite was coated in flavor, and we found ourselves dipping everything into the extra sauce. The seafood itself was fresh and cooked well. The snow crab legs were a little difficult to crack, but once you were able to dive in, it was packed with sweet tender meat. The lobster tails stayed juicy instead of becoming rubbery, the muscles were plump, and the shrimp had a fresh bite. The corn, potatoes, and sausage, and eggs soaked up all of that delicious seasoning and honestly became just as enjoyable as the seafood. I also wanted crawfish, but no one else at the table wanted to order a whole pound. After mentioning it to our server, they were kind enough to bring me a couple crawfish on the side instead of making me purchase an entire order. It was such a thoughtful gesture and really showed they cared about making our experience enjoyable. The only thing I'd love to see improved is the seafood tools. They provided crackers and scissors, but they weren't very effective and made getting into the crab legs and lobster more difficult than it needed to be. A sturdier cracker and sharper seafood scissors would make the experience much smoother. Between the welcoming staff, fun atmosphere, fresh seafood, flavorful seasoning, and thoughtful customer service, this was a great place to celebrate a special occasion. They often make mistakes in orders, but I keep coming back because there really isn't much competition for this sort of seafood in town. There is a much better place in Madison. A group of friends and I haven't seen each other for quite some time and they suggested that we dine at the King Crab Shack. It was my very first-time having seafood boil at a restaurant, so I was quite excited to try it out. I arrived first and went in to grab a table for our group. The host post was empty and the waiters were near the kitchen. One waitress came up and greeted me - she offered booth or table. Figured we would take a table since seafood boil can take up a lot of room. Right away she took my drink order as I waited for the rest of the party. I was amazed at how well kept the place was with a B rating sign on their door. You can definitely tell the owners take social distancing very serious as some tables were taped off (at least 2-3 tables between each available table). Once the rest of our group arrived, the waitress took their orders and gave us more time to look at the menu since I was not sure of what to order. After a quick run over the menu with my friends, the waitress came back within minutes and took our orders right away. Although they were quite busing with take out, delivery and dine -in order, we didn't have to wait too long. (about 15-20 minutes) Our food came out scorching hot which was nice! I quickly dug into my order (Combo #2: two cluster of snow crab legs, 1lb mussels or crawfish - I went with mussels, and it also came with one corn, one whole potato and about a quarter size sausage.) I was amazed by how perfectly cooked everything was. I've had crab legs from restaurants before and they tend to be over cooked where the meat just falls apart when you try to get to it. However, this place really nailed their seafood. The crab legs were cooked to perfection and when pulling out the meat, it would come out whole. The mussels were perfectly steamed on half shells. The potato and corn were perfect and was not mushy at all. The sausage is average - you can get anywhere else. Overall, the service was great. The staffs are friendly and food is amazing. I would definitely go back for me. Apparently, the price did go up, however; it was still reasonably priced with being seafood. So I ordered the build your own platter with lobster tails, shrimp and scallops. They mistakenly brought out mussels instead of scallops. When I said this isn't what I ordered, the server started arguing with me, insisting i ordered mussels and not scallops. Even the friend I was dining with said, 'Sir, I heard him order scallops, not mussels." Not content to let it lie, the server walked away and came back with a crinkled up piece of paper with an order written on it, pointing out "mussels." I told him it wasn't my fault he wrote it down incorrectly. To add insult to injury, there was an "18% service charge" added to the bill and $113 later I left with a bad meal, terrible service, and the wrong food. It smelled so terrible, I thought about walking out. After receiving the food, I noticed that the mussels were not de-beard and cleaned properly. For the combo 1 is $41.99 and you get to pick 3 out of the 5 on the menu. The pho was good as well, I can tell from the broth it was made fresh in the morning. This is in my opinion the best seafood boil option in the city. Their sauces are amazing, very flavorful, unique, and not at all watered down like what you can get at some seafood boils. The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is that the carryout system is a pain: you can't call in and place your order ahead of time, you have to go in, place the order, and wait in your car for it to be ready. This location on 27th street is the one you should go to, avoid the one on Brady St, which is a laughable shadow of the 27th street one in all ways. read more

I was a little skeptical at first because the reviews were hit or miss. I am definitely happy my bf and I decided to try it out for ourselves!! The quality of the seafood was not bad at all, the crawfish did seem a little old but the crab legs, mussels, and shrimp were great! We had all 3 sauces and it was a delicious balance of cajun, garlic, and lemon pepper. VERY flavorful and not too spicy or salty by any means. They did have every other table "closed off" due to covid. The service wasn't anything to rave about but it wasn't horrible either. I figured they must've gotten it together because I didn't see any recent reviews that were bad or anything, but when I got my food it was absolutely undeniably horrible, terrible, and disgusting. I took a small bite of shrimp and I had to spit it out. I sat there in disbelief and I wanted it to be good so bad that I decided to try a small bite of my crab legs but I had to spit that out as well. I could not stand to swallow it or stomach it. The sauce tasted like it was French dressing, ketchup, and Siracha all mixed up. I am so mad at myself for hoping, wishing, and thinking that they must've gotten better. I usually never leave reviews but I am hoping and wishing that I can save someone else from having this horrific experience. I called to ask for a refund as I had my food To go and I couldn't eat a whole crab leg or shrimp, and the owner said they don't do refunds. They were not willing to do anything to try and make my experience better. I visited this place while on vacation after seeing the awesome crab legs BLove on Facebook/YouTube had, sadly I was disappointed. First let me start by saying we arrived at 7:50pm, the establishment says it closes at 9:30pm. We were informed that they were no longer seating guests, that it was to go orders only. This was confusing as I saw ample staff members and several empty tables. I ordered to go. I got crab legs, shrimp (they do not sell headless only head on), and sides. Sadly, the crab legs were very skimpy/malnourished, as I got 3 clusters in a pound vs 1.5-2 clusters, which is typical in a pound if the crab legs are healthy, and meaty! I ordered rice, corn, potatoes and sausage. I was highly disappointed that I paid almost $4 for 6 little quarter sized pieces of sausage. The corn was decent and the rice was to expectation. Lastly, the sauce. It had an odd sweet flavor to it. Not my cup of tea. By far the WORST customer service from 'manager' Shawn - extremely unprofessional. Purchased a 2lb bag (snow crab, shrimp, potatoes and corn) to-go order Saturday evening (3/9) - told the employee taking my order that I wanted NO spice and they repeated it back when reviewing my order. Got home (30 mins away) - bag was inedible due to extreme spice; called the restaurant from 6pm until close with no answer. Called this morning (3/10) and spoke to manager Shawn - explained the situation and how I attempted to call the night before to address the issue, to which he stated there were phone issues and the only way he could address the situation was if I brought back the bag (that I threw away the night before) to 'show his staff for training.' I offered to bring back my receipt as well as their ticket (which he told me earlier in the conversation did in fact indicate a spice code had been put on it), only to be told that wasn't sufficient without the bag because "people lie all the time to get free food." When I asked for the owner's information I was told I was being rude and he hung up - when I called back and again asked for the owner's information I was only given his name and told "he's in when he comes in," in reference to me asking when would be the best time to call back and speak with him. As a frequent customer of the Brady location (which isn't much better on the customer service end), this is by far the worst experience I've had with King Crab Shack. The only reason I'm not giving this place zero stars is because yelp doesn't allow it. me and my boyfriend went having high expectations. Their website seemed amazing with all the different selections, flavors, etc. When we got there we were shocked, there were certain items that weren't available, that said it was available online. I got 2 pounds of crawfish, shrimp, potatoes, corn in a Cajun sauce. This piece of shit was absolutely fucking terrible. They didn't have crackers to open the crab and had to use scissors, the shrimp still needed to be deveined more as I had to remove stuff myself and it just made for an expensive unsatisfying experience. I would totally give this place 5 starts if it weren't for the horrible customer service, when I go, since seafood is expensive it isn't all that often, but when I do my fiancé and I often get 2 pounds of king crab a pound of shrimp and a pound of crawfish with their fixins (corn, potatoes, and sausage) and their house sauce. We always love the food and all the leftovers but the service makes the experience much less enjoyable. I am happy to give this a 5 star rating - but it is only for the "pick your seafood" items. I have not tried any of their other entrees. The seafood items are simply amazing. For this pick your seafood entree, you pick the seafood, the sauce and spice level. These are cooked together and served in a plastic bag. You can order sides - I would suggest Rice and corn. It is extremely messy to eat this. I wear an old cover shirt over my regular shirt, just to eat here. It is almost impossible to not get your shirt dirty, even with the bib they provide. Taste: FIVE STARS! Simply superb. I chose medium spice level. I would suggest that you stay medium or below, for spice level. You have choices of three sauces. Garlic butter, lemon pepper and crazy cajun. I have tried Garlic butter and Lemon pepper sauces and they are both excellent. Today, I had snow crab legs. I do recall that the king crab was even more messy to eat; they do provide a shell cracker instrument; even then, I would not suggest king crab. It has been a long time, since I had the fresh/live lobster but I recall thinking that it too is not worth the effort! So far, snow crabs are the best option but I think the shrimp might be an easier to peel/eat option. It doesn't really matter which seafood you select - it is the sauce which would make it delicious. I wish they offered fish also, cooked like this. I am not a fan of Vietnamese food - especially the pho. Vietamese food tends to have a "fishy taste" which I dislike. How ever, this seafood creation taste not like typical Vietnamese food but simply wonderful! Bottom line: If you enjoy spicy asian seafood and are dressed raggedly, this seafood entree is a "must try". Service is average. They are not particularly friendly.
