I got my first curly cut from Marina and it was the best decision I've made about my hair!! I did some research before calling and making an appointment and most places that specialize in curly hair were too pricey for what I could afford at the moment. I saw the reviews for Botticelli and it got my attention. I called her, asked her a lot of questions and she answered every one of them with enthusiasm and patience. I told her it would be my first curly cut and although I'm excited I'm still nervous. She made me feel really comfortable and said I can always call again if I have more questions. The way I knew she was trusting: she asked me to send her a pic of my hair so she knows what she would be working with. Then days before my appointment, not only did she confirm the appointment date and time, she also wanted to make sure we were both on the same page of what I made the appointment for. When I arrived, she was very welcoming and friendly and she asked me about my curly hair goals. I told her I just want my curls back and am willing to cut my dead ends to make it happen. She assessed my hair, showed me a pic of how short it would look, and although I was nervous about the short cut, I knew it was what I had to do! She made me feel very much at ease the whole time and explained what she was doing. She even went step by step in explaining how to care for my hair during and post-shower. I always get charged a ton bc my hair is too thick or too curly, and I always leave the salons disappointed. Rather than remove my last review, I finally decided to put another on Yelp. I was so grateful when I saw Marina the first time. My next two experiences were a very rude awakening, unfortunately. My first visit was so good, as I look back, because I had finally found a stylist who, first of all, specialized in curly hair. Also, she did take time to explain what she was doing, and had some knowledge of the products she was using. This was a relief after the struggle to find anyone who appreciated curly hair. It did turn out to be very difficult to get another appointment. I don't think this was because she was busy, however. Her hours, at the time, were only during midday, in downtown San Diego, which is very far for me. I waited days without a response, and wondered if she didn't want to work with me, but had no reason that I could imagine for why she wouldn't. I finally heard back from her that she was in Mexico, after trying to get her to respond with a humorous text, and succeeding. My mom has been ill in Florida since August, and I really need to be ready to go there at any time, looking ok. This did not seem to matter at all to Marina. My second cut was, well... terrible. She rushed, someone was waiting, I had to keep asking for a mirror so I could see what she had done. She pulled out cheap hairspray and, without even asking, sprayed me. I had thought she was using natural products, and was shocked. I am chemically sensitive, and tried to keep my cool. She said her Deva spray had been "lifted", that she is using just a little to keep the curls in place. I am a very patient person, and try to give people excuses, even when they don't say anything. She was moving out of her parents' house, whatever... I let it go. She mentioned that a competitor had a new website with people looking like fashion models, and I was sitting there wishing she would pay attention to the person right in her hands at the moment. It was just as impossible to get the next appointment. What stylist doesn't work after 3pm or on weekends? I think it was not true- she wanted to save those times. I saw the competitor's website- she was booked for a month in advance. I finally got a Saturday morning appointment. It's a really bad sign when your stylist has cut their hair really short, and looks a mess. She said her hair was a "work in progress", and I sat down, a little scared. The first thing she offered was to wash my hair. I had washed it that morning, and was expecting a Deva cut, which is dry. She told me she was going to Tijuana later to ride dirt bikes. The reason I hadn't written this review until now is because she seems nice, but I finally decided that is appearance only. The entire haircut was, basically, me trying to get her to slow down. Whole areas, like above my ears, had barely been considered to see how they fit in. Again, someone was waiting. After my 50% tip last time, as she used hairspray AGAIN without asking, she said she was going to charge me less, since she hadn't washed my hair after the cut, and was rushing to meet her sister to go to Mexico. Incredible. Was it because I am a guy, was it because I gave her a 5 star review, was it because I have some hair loss so don't look like a fashion model for a portfolio? Those were some of the thoughts I had after my 3rd cut. Sorry Marina- not cool- My advice- Don't Go. Update: After Marina's comment, I would not recommend anyone see her. I sped that morning so that I would be on time, which I was. Something is seriously wrong, and I am tired of trying to figure out what, but I recommend going elsewhere, so you don't need to figure it out either. read more

I'm so happy I found Marina. I've had a lot of curly haircuts with a lot of different stylists, some good and some bad, and this cut was by far the best! Not only did Marina actually listen to what I wanted, which hasn't always happened in the past, but she also gave me her expert opinion on what would look good, which was appreciated. I came to her with some pretty bad layers that were given to me by my previous stylist, and Marina was able to fix them for me, and I left the salon loving my cut. It was also great that I was able to just book a haircut without a wash and dry: this saved me time and money, and it's nice to have a stylist that provides different options for customers. I had been thinking about going back to my natural curls. I didn't even know how they looked anymore. My hair is fine blonde and I had been styling it strait or wavy for a looooong time. I had such a great experience here! I came in wanting a trim while keeping as much length as possible, and Marina gave me exactly what I wanted. My curls look fresh and the shape of my hair is perfect.
