I've only been here a handful of times when there was no line, and that's usually because they had just opened. Otherwise, the line is almost always wrapped around the corner onto PCH--but it is absolutely worth the wait! I'm also really impressed with the staff. They are always on it! I actually time our wait every time we come, and they are incredibly consistent and quick. Even with a long line, our wait has never exceeded 25 minutes. And then there's the smell of those freshly baked waffle cone as you approach are to die for! The portions are generous, the gelato is delicious, and everything is always on point. It's one of those treats that just hits the spot every single time. Definitely worth the wait and easily one of our favorite monthly treats!

The alley itself is charming. Yes, there's a line but it moves quickly. Once you make it to the front the helpers are wonderful. Everyone working was nice and patient. Had two samples. Could sample every one. The menu is straightforward. Makes ordering quick and easy. They offer gelato and sorbetto. A flavor for everyone. The waffle cone is a must. Just writing this review is making my mouth water for seconds. Thank you Paradiso!!

They have so many flavors!!…read moreThis month the theme was something along the lines of "sea mythology" (think mermaids, kraken, sea witches, etc.) so they had probably around 6 flavors with clever names to fit the theme. Besides that, they had all the standard gelato flavors, plus a ton more unique ones! I was tempted to try so many of them (even though I'm that person that always just orders chocolate chip or hazelnut anyway). My daughter picked taro and the "sea witch" flavor, which was purple sweet potato and squid ink caramel. She got to sample both of them before deciding since I wasn't sure if she would like those flavors, but she did! And even though she mainly picked them because they were purple, they actually complimented each other well since they were both sweet root vegetables haha. This place offered 4 different sizes (kid, small, medium and large). Even the kid size was a bit much for my 4 year old daughter, but it's probably the right size for like a 10 year old... Naturally I helped her finish it! The gelato was delicious and I loved the uniqueness of both of these flavors! The visual aesthetic was fabulous, too. Our server was very kind and patient as my daughter decided what she wanted. We sat in the store for a few minutes as we ate before we headed back to our parking meter. There were around 4 small tables with a couple chairs each for sitting. It seems like enough since most people probably grab n go since there's so much window shopping to do in this area. In summary, we loved this gelato shop and can't wait to see what future seasonal flavors they have!

Tip: they have a kid's portion that is $1 cheaper than the piccolo size which is only one scoop, slightly smaller than a standard scoop, even in a cup. So getting piccolo in a cup (2 scoops) is a better value for what you get. Just wish the kid's portion was proportionally cheaper.

There are so many good ones that I still can't decide which is my favorite! If you're having trouble choosing, they'll let you sample a few flavors before making your decision. The service is always good, and the staff is friendly and energetic. The only downside is that there's almost always a line, and the wait is usually at least 15 minutes. Personally, I'm not a fan of waiting that long for gelato, so unless I'm bringing friends or family who haven't tried it before, I don't come very often. I'd rather skip the wait and grab dessert somewhere else One thing I highly recommend is getting the waffle cone. They make them fresh in-house, and they're so good! They have a wonderful vanilla flavor that pairs perfectly with the gelato. The shop itself is beautiful. The floor-to-ceiling shelving around the walls gives it and elegant look. The decor is clean, neutral, and inviting, creating a cozy atmosphere. That said, don't expect to sit and enjoy your gelato inside, this is more of a grab and go place.

The visit felt easy and relaxed, with no waiting and a chance to try something new. The shop itself was clean and inviting, and the staff was absolutely lovely. Their friendliness and attentiveness made the experience more enjoyable and added a personal touch that made us feel welcome right away. That said, the ice cream did not quite match the price. It was tasty enough, but it did not feel worth the cost, and I left thinking I probably would not return for the ice cream alone. If you want to spend a little extra to enjoy kind service and avoid long lines, it is fine, but it was not memorable enough to make a repeat visit. The staff was the highlight and made the experience better than expected.

I brought my two daughters so we each picked out one macaron. We got the raspberry, birthday cake and white chocolate basil flavors. The birthday cake was delicious and the filling was very soft and creamy, like a light whipped cream frosting (not a dense buttercream). I loved the texture. The white chocolate basil was surprisingly good! I love trying new unique flavor combinations and these worked really well together. The basil flavor was pretty subtle so it blended nicely into the white chocolate flavor. I didn't get to try the raspberry since my daughter devoured it, but she loved it! The macaron shop offered a lot of other flavors, so it had something for everyone. The cookies were beautifully decorated. I left questioning whether I have the self-control of a functioning adult. South Swell is the kind of place where you walk in thinking, "I'll just get a little ice cream," and five minutes later you're staring at a chocolate-covered, peanut-butter-drizzled architectural project wondering how your life got here. I ordered the chocolate ice cream bar, and my girlfriend went with vanilla soft serve, peanuts, and an Oreo cookie situation underneath it. Both were ridiculously good. Her dessert in particular looked like someone took a vanilla soft serve, dropped it into a construction zone, and then said, "Yeah. More peanuts." And the chocolate bar? Absolutely filthy in the best possible way. Chocolate, crunchy, creamy, peanut-buttery. basically every part of my brain responsible for making rational decisions just clocked out. I think I fucked up by not getting the bon fire or bomb fire. Whatever the fuck it's called. There was a pretty long line, so I'm not going to pretend we walked right in and were immediately handed dessert by the gods. We waited. But honestly? Worth it. It was worth it. Cus sometimes you have to be a worthless piece of shit waiting in a 30-40 minute line at 9 pm. For some soft serve. Because there's something about getting ice cream in Laguna Beach, walking around afterward, and realizing you just consumed enough sugar to potentially see through time that makes the whole experience work. I have diabetes now. Type 2. South Swell isn't trying to be some precious, overly sophisticated dessert destination. It's fun, indulgent, messy, nostalgic, and unapologetically excessive. Exactly what an ice cream shop should be. Would I wait in that line again? Unfortunately, yes. Maybe some day. Would I pretend I'm only getting one thing next time? Also yes. Am I fat piece of shit big back ? Yes. Yes. I am. Would that be a lie? No. I'm a big back. I'm obese. I have issues. 5/5. South Swell has my money, my dignity, and probably another 1800 calories waiting for me next weekend. God bless America. Don't go to Laguna beach though. Stay home. Stay out. I don't want to wait 45 minutes next time.

We waited about 30 mins for our ice cream and if there wasn't a line I would definitely swing by but I don't think this spot is worth waiting longer than 15 mins for ice cream.

The Mushroom empanada was fine and good. I would love one that's all mushroom and onion no mozzarella. Lighter cheese or no cheese. But no way my way. The Beef empanada was overloaded with raisins. I plucked out ten from one empanada-after I took a bite. If it were a wine, I would describe it as raisin forward with heavy notes of dried grapes with a raisin finish. Too much "raisin" for me. I have a beef with the Beef and Potato as well. Too dry. OK but lacking. More onions please! Simply lacking in spices and flavor. Chimichurri to the rescue. I did buy a jar to take home. The chimichurri was good but a bit flat. Easy fix- I added some chopped garlic and red pepper flakes and BOOM! That gave it the spicy pop that I wanted. Service was fine, limited outdoor seating, tough luck parking. Perhaps my taste buds have changed or I've worn 'em thin. Judging by the many reviews with a 4.5 star average, must be a change in my taste buds.
