I've seen Boudin on Union Square, right outside of Macy's. I ordered pick up and asked the lady where too pick up. She said downwstairs??? It was the most confusing and unclear instructions because I was walking for at least 5-10 minutes trying to figure out where to pick up my lunch. Short and sweet review for five star service! It's a tradition for me to bring some sourdough home to my husband when I'm in SF for work, and it's no secret that Boudin is the best. Although I've been to the big location at the Wharf, I'm appreciative that there are smaller locations around the city. This one was a 10 minute walk from my hotel. I hopped into line right when they opened, and ordered a one pound round loaf and one of their specialty animal-shaped sourdoughs - the crab! The gentleman that helped me with my order was fast and friendly - even going so far as to add a colorful ribbon to the wrapper of the crab, assuming that it was a gift. We were staying near Union Square for this quick little visit to the Bay area. We had literally just walked 10 minutes or so from the hotel when we came across this Boudin location! - This is a smaller location with fairly limited seating. Luckily, we visited during the afternoon on a weekday, so it really wasn't an issue for us. - Service was friendly and helpful. Our orders were taken in a timely fashion, and we received our food in a very reasonable amount of time. - We each had a clam chowder bread bowl with a drink, and it really hit the spot! Every time we visit this city, we make it a point to enjoy a clam chowder bread bowl. It's a SF staple in my opinion! Portion size was good, and I left full and satisfied after eating here. - I love checking out all of the different bread creations they have at every Boudin location! I had to find San Francisco sourdough on my business trip. So glad Boudin's was here! Unfortunately they did not have a vegan option. I ordered the turkey havarti. As someone who grew up on the east coast, when I first heard SF was known for their clam chowder, I was highly skeptical. A couple of my friends suggested Boudin so of course I had to try their clam chowder, and in the bread bowl. The chowder was pretty good. The little pieces of clam tasted pretty fresh and the sourdough bread provided the perfect complement. It was yummy but I think there are better chowders out there. This chain of Boudin was located in the bottom level of Macy's so it wasn't the cutest vibe - there seemed to be a bit of construction and the blenders at the Jamba Juice next door were quite loud. I absolutely love Boudin! I always do their pick a pair combo because it is such a good deal. The spring salad is crispy and I always ask for extra dressing (which is free). The turkey cranberry sandwich is a good sweet pairing with the salad! Unfortunately, this Boudin's service was not good. I went with 3 other friends and they all had a problem with the person at the register. The lady at the register was very cold and didn't ask us what we wanted to drink/offer us water cups. When I tried to redeem my free bread I had to ask twice because she ignored my question. When I asked the second time she said I can't pick it up here. When I proceeded to ask how to redeem it, she said go downstairs. No directions other than that were given. If you are trying to go to Boudin after Macys, please go downstairs to the cellar! This cafe can be found in the lower level of the Union Square Macy's. Unlike some of the other reviews, we received great service at the counter and our food was brought to the table in a short time. We ordered the tomato soup, clam chowder, breakfast burrito and French dip. The soups were tasty and satisfying. The beef in the French dip was tender but the au jus lacked flavor. This Boudin Bakery is a small location by Macy's near Union Square on O'Farrell St in downtown San Francisco. They serve the awesome, famous sourdough sandwiches and bread bowls, but their space is so small and narrow. I don't think this restaurant big enough to hold more than 15 people. I wish they would have a bigger, nicer location in the Union Square/Tenderloin district. I would suggest going to the bigger location near the wharf. We got an assortment of cookies: Chocolate chip, Oatmeal raisin, Peanut butter, etc. I ended up eating a Butterscotch cookie. I liked the texture as it was soft and chewy. This bakery is in the Macy's cellar, great news for me since it's next door to my office! My favorites are the avocado toast with bacon (if I'm ok with a calorie splurge), half a roast beef and cheddar sandwich with a green salad (if I have to go skinny), and a bowl of clam chowder or rustic tomato bisque (if I'm having a rough day at work). I'm visiting SF this weekend and passed by this place while walking down the street. Decided to circle back and stop in here for lunch. The review below from 7/29/2019 is spot on about the customer service. If not for the very unpleasant welcome (the young lady behind the counter barely uttered hello), I would have given them 5 stars. I ordered the turkey avocado sandwich on a croissant with a side salad (choice of salad or chips) and asked for balsamic vinaigrette. She stared at me like I was stupid until she realized I was talking about the dressing for the salad. I grabbed a blood orange San Pelligrino to drink and asked if I could have a cup of ice. She took a cup, walked away without saying anything and came back with a cup of ice water. I just took it and found a table. The sandwich was DELICIOUS. Fresh turkey, tomato, lettuce, cheese, mayo, and a lovely mashed avocado spread on a toasted croissant. The salad was a very simple mixed greens salad with grape tomatoes and shredded carrots but the dressing made it super yummy. The person who served it did so with just as much of a lack of pleasantry as the person who took my order. My total was $14.69 including $1.15 for tax - which I think was a great value for the quality of the food and the generous portion size. Came here for a quick lunch and was able to arrive before the lunch rush. After you order, they give you a number to post at your table. Servers will come find your number and give you the food. The system is a bit inefficient. I ordered tomato soup with a cranberry-turkey sandwich on sourdough. The soup was tasty and had two grilled croutons on top. The sandwich was also good and was made with sourdough bread. My only problem was the sandwich came with mayo when I specifically asked for no mayo. But since I was in a rush I just scraped off the mayo instead of asking for another to be made. I went into boudin yesterday evening at about 7:30 pm I was interested in purchasing sourdough bread, I got in line with others, I ask the cashier if I can get a sourdough bread. I was like the entire wall in the restaurant area was full of bread at it was 7:30 pm on Saturday. Like are you serious. Then I head to the to the restaurant side to ask if they had any Available since their was hundreds of sourdough pieces in the shelf. I go up to the cashier asked her if I can purchase sourdough bread. She literally looked like she did not understand what I was asking her. She had to get someone else to help with the question. The second Latin lady that was assisting her said. No we cannot sell you bread! No apologies or explanation! The worst customer service I have ever experience. Do not go there. Yelp other locations that are close buy. They will have better customer and the best clam chowder is at The hog island! Amazing. Located near the hopping Union Square area, Boudin caught my eye. I knew I had to try the the famous sourdough! I instantly ordered at the counter and my food was brought to my table in under three minutes. I was surprised how quickly, given that it was a Saturday afternoon. Amazing! The bread bowl was a whole hunk of dough and the top comes on the side for additional dunking. It was so fresh, soft, and had just enough saltiness. If you can't get to the Wharf, this is the next best sourdough spot! The space itself is fine- some indoor seating is available along a long, narrow corridor and some metal outdoor seating too. Wow, what a HORRIBLE place to go to eat. I came in last Thursday, hours are posted on Yelp, open to 530 they were closed at 4. Yesterday I came in for Ash Wednesday around 345. Guy took my order and decided to eat in because it was really cold outside. A lady came in with her kid and this Mexican old lady was cleaning up and yelled at the lady saying they were closed. The lady asked what time they close and she said 4 (again, time is listed at 530) and the lady asked what time it was. And then the lady yelled at the cashier, asking what time it was and he said 354. The lady kindly asked if she could still order and the worker yelled at the cashier if she can, and he said yes. It was really awkward...... I sat down anyway at the end of the store to avoid the cold. The lady was loudly cleaning everything. 5 minutes later, I received my food. And she threw it on my table, really rude. I finish my food and wait awhile. Then after cleaning up as much as she could she yells at myself and a family behind me that they were closed. She had her hand on her hip and showed us the door. What kind of service is this? If you don't want to stay till closing then work the morning shift. She really hated her job, and seemed like she hated life. It was such a negative experience. I would NEVER recommend ANYONE coming here until they get rid of her. They need to change their hours and replace her. There is another boudin in the women's Macy's. I've always had excellent customer service there. I had to come back here this time for the clam chowder. When I googled best clam chowder, boudin came up several times as the most affordable and the best tasting. And this is very true. The clam chowder in a bread bowl is for 6.99 tax included. I asked for mine without the bread and salad on the side and the cost was reduced by a dollar. Quite unexpected and no additional additional tax or service charge. I like how there are no hidden charges. After a lot of walking I needed water. Water was provided to me free of cost and the gorgeous young woman even filled it up for me and brought it to my table. Again let me highlight no service charge.
