Perhaps they should call it French dip on their receipts instead of "deluxe beef" so the people working there catch their own mistakes? French dip is made dry and a little bland on purpose to offset the salty, savory juice you dip it in, so doesn't taste very good without it. Luckily Grubhub refunded me with credits, but it sure made for a disappointing lunch. read more

Lots of orders were prepared and waiting to be expedited. It was taking a lot of time per order. After 10 more minutes I finally asked when my order would be ready. They checked the tag and grabbed my sandwich, which had been up and ready the entire 10 minutes. Went to my table and the bread was now dry from sitting out on the line. Disappointing. Seems like the manager should have halted orders and joined to expedite what was ready rather than just adding to the backlog. This was my first visit to Bourdin Sourdough. Our order was $32+ dollars. We ordered a grilled cheese/side salad/x2 side soups/1 full size Cobb Salad. I assumed the portions would be worth the hefty price tag. It was not the case in fact it was a very disappointing experience. The Cobb salad was mostly lettuce with a little bit of egg and a few shreds of parmesan. Unfortunately, the Grilled Cheese did not fair any better in quality. The value of this sandwich does not match it's price tag. Since we live near Willow Glen returning to the restaurant was not reasonable to do. My wait time for our food was 25 minutes due to staffing issues. I phoned the restaurant to report this immediately and now plan to request a full refund. FYI- The side soups are tiny portions and at a price tag of $3.99 are not worth it. You may have better luck with the soup bowls and other menu items. Good luck read more

The food is solid...great soups, breads, etc. This has been a regular go-to place when you want some warm comfort food on cold winter nights. The management at this location is terrible, though. They seem to regularly run out of clam chowder and/or the sourdough bread bowls for soup fairly early in the evening. When we order online, they'll often substitute a dinner roll for the sourdough bread bowl. This is nowhere close to an equivalent item. When I call to complain, they want to argue with me about it. This last time, they said that they would refund a portion of our meal...never happened. It just seems that this location is poorly managed, and has been for a while. I came here during COVID-19 pandemic to pick up grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and a side of clam chowder to go for dinner (DoorDash had a promo for 20% orders $15 off or more; you can also order ahead online via the Boudin website). Unfortunately, they ran out of clam chowder and couldn't find a way to refund me, so I got tomato soup instead. They kindly upgraded the size of my soup since they didn't have clam chowder. The grilled cheese was good, though I kinda wish there was even more cheese hehehe. Nonetheless, it was nicely toasted with a parmesan crust. The soup was average. I don't usually come to a Boudin for dinner, and so I was really surprised at how busy it was. There were at least 3 customers while I was there and I saw many to-go orders ready for pick up. A coupon brought us to Boudin's but the food will definitely bring us back! There were 6 of us so we ordered a 4 person and a 2 person sandwhich and soup bowl meal deal. While you can't freely choose from the menu, the variety of sandwich choices available was adequate to meet the tastes of our diversely picky group. I had the chicken pesto sandwich and, unfortunately, was disappointed in my sandwich. There was plenty of chicken but very little pesto. It was bland, boring and honestly not something I'd recommend. Everyone else enjoyed their sandwiches with the turkey avocado bringing raves reviews. The soup bowls were "soup-er" bowls! The bowl was a mini loaf of that wonderful sourdough that Boudin is known for. It came with two cups of soup - we thought they made a mistake but the Boudin regular in our group said it is usually one bigger bowl so not to get so excited. But after tasting our soups (tomato and clam chowder), we WERE excited. The tomato soup came with fresh shaved Parmesan and a little bag of fresh croutons that just enhanced the delicious tomato-y creaminess. The clam chowder didn't come with any accoutrements but was still delicious. Like I said, this was a lot of food. We had enough leftovers for all 6 of us to have lunch the next day AND we still had two mini loaves of bread left to make toast with the following morning. We recently ordered the family meal from Boudin on Almaden. We ordered the Bruschetta pizza. Attached is the picture on their website alongside the sad thing I came home with. It was basically a cheese pizza. I immediately called and asked what happened? I was told they ran out of tomatoes and basil. No one mentioned this to me when I picked up the pizza. I would have obviously ordered something else. The person on the phone said I could come back for "some bread or something ". I said I would prefer they just credit me for the pizza. He said that it was an online order so I would have to come back with my receipt and it would have to go through corporate. I was not willing to drive back so I was just out of luck. Beware! I just to frequent the Boudins in SF, so when I noticed there was once here in San Jose - I asked my coworker if she would like to join me. All the server dude knew about the film Willard (the original), so that's something you don't hear about everyday. Overall, a pleasant experience and happy we ate here. Superb presentation! Due to the pandemic, most restaurants package their food in white or brown paper bags with minimal focus on packaging or presentation. So I was quite surprised to see Boudin SF's great packaging for the $30 sandwich and soup combination. We got the Clam Chowder in Bread Bowl and Chicken Salad sandwiches. Bread bowls were pre cut and packaged separately with butter and knives. Clam chowder was in separate paper soup bowls. Sandwiches were individually and carefully wrapped. Impressive presentation. Plus you get 2 cookies for dessert. Food wise, Boudin's clam chowder had tender chunks of potatoes and clams. Flavorful. Sandwiches were decent. Cookies were a huge hit! Huge portion sizes! Service is still fast and friendly despite the COVID. I've had the privilege to dine inside here over a dozen times during the pre-pandemic or pre-COVID days. The inside is nice but table less and chairless. Employees all wearing masks and gloves and smiles that can be seen in their eyes. We got the Beef Chili in a large bowl (not the bread bowl) with a side of potatoe wedges and a Vegan Sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich had a generous serving of fresh avocado spread nicely on the bread with fresh tomatoes onions and (romaine?) lettuce. Bread was delicious and soft. The salad was simple (a little on the small side). It also with fresh ingredients. Their house coffee there is very good. I always get mine black. They allow online orders and have an app in the Apple App Store with a beautiful interface for ordering ahead as well and tracking your order history and marking your faves. I really love the menu selection here, and the signs that state they attempt to use organic and locally grown, sustainable sources for their produce, which I highly value. I would come frequently, just for that. I gave 3 stars because I had recently been to the same restaurant in Vacaville twice, and tried the grilled brie with apples & fig jam on parmesan-crusted bread, and truly loved it! The first time in Vacaville, the bread almost looked like apples and cinnamon were embedded into the bread, but it may have just been the look of the parmesan (I only had a bite of someone else's that time). The 2nd time in Vacaville, I could taste the parmesan, and it was so good! Either way, the bread of the sandwich in Vacaville added much to the flavor of the sandwich, and I'd drive out of my way for it. So, once home, I looked up the closest Boudin in San Jose and found this location. It is a busy parking lot here, and there was a line of customers, so it took a little while, but I was anticipating the sandwich I'd tried at the other location. The sandwich we got here was not one I'd come back for. The bread tasted plain, and the strongest flavor I had was of the fig jam. I would order other items over the brie & apple sandwich here, if I came again, and the entire reason I looked up this restaurant was to have that sandwich again that was so delicious elsewhere. They are missing the mark, or swapping out the bread, or not making the bread the same as they do in Vacaville. Because it is a busy parking lot, and a busy location, I would not go out of my way to come back here again, which I was hoping was to be a new place to have a quick meal once in a while with new options to eat. If I worked or lived a little closer, I might frequent this restaurant, as I do truly appreciate that they try to use the freshest of produce, and organic, and many menu items do sound good. But, it is not close enough for me to drive out of my way, when the sandwich was very disappointing to the one I had elsewhere. But there is definitely potential here.
