Save your money - do not order the pizza! I ordered the cheese pizza for $22 along with a couple other items from the menu, but somehow something was lost in translation over the music and I received a slice of cheese pizza for $7.50 (I didn't know this was an option because it's not on the menu). The staff offered to try to bring the whole pizza that the slice came from (a half cheese and half pepperoni pizza). I agreed because paying 1/3 of the cost of a whole pizza for just a slice didn't make sense to me and it wasn't what I ordered. Once the whole pizza came out, I tried a slice and it was bad. The cheese was waxy and flavorless. That's when I regretted not agreeing to just a slice and only paying $7.50. That being said, they offer a large soft pretzel which is a good option, however I'm not a fan of the cheese sauce that comes with it (and I love cheese). The building is great for bowling, which is $32 an hour and shoe rental is $6 per person for VERY worn down shoes/laces. A party of 4 will pay $25 and change for shoe rental that was uncomfortable for two out of the four of us. I would recommend bringing your own bowling shoes. We attended a special event yesterday for my husband's company. The place is super cute, hipster, natural elements and of course the lanes. The bar was amazing, well stocked with all the spirits. We enjoyed a couple of bloody Mary's and they do offer Maria's version as well. The food was phenomenal. When I say we tried everything on the menu I am not exaggerating. The party began and the food never stopped coming out of the kitchen. Everyone left stuffed and there were boxes being filled to go. I really enjoyed the bacon wrapped shrimp and the beef empanadas. I didn't know this place existed until a friend wanted to meet there. We went during the day on a weekday and were the only ones there for a while. I've heard it gets really busy at night and on weekends so I'm grateful we had no problems! The service was great! The servers were nice and attentive. My husband and I shared a pizza and it was delicious! I highly recommend the margarita pizza. We had some mimosas and a couple beers. All drinks were delicious! Bowling was a bit more expensive than I'm used to for 2 hours. Eh, I liked it here but didn't love it. The atmosphere is pleasing but everything else was a bummer. My friends and I went on a Tuesday evening which it wasn't crowded at all, maybe two other lanes were in use and I was surprised at how slow the service was. They offer these buttons on the table to press for your server, and each time it took them 20-25 minutes to just make it to the table. It was quite frustrating because we wanted to continue ordering more drinks + food. Pizza was decent and drinks were nothing to rave about. And I just want to add, I don't know if it was just the day we came but it was extremely hot in there to the point where I was sweating horribly, it literally felt like a sauna in there. We came here with our family of 9 and they gave us two lanes right next to another family with 4 young children and all the other lanes were empty. The workers here are not great. They stay on their phones the entire time so every time you need assistance you have to walk all the way to the bar. Would recommend never coming here. read more

I've been to bowl and barrel a few times and I've enjoyed it each time I've gone. The staff is always helpful and the facility is well decorated with a rustic feel and always clean. It's a more intimate bowling alley but we've always been able to get a lane. It's nice to be able to grab a drink and snacks and have something to do after a dinner out. Over priced. $71 for 90 minutes. Balls are all chipped, lanes are bumpy and uneven. You can't correct your score when it doesn't calculate correctly. Pins are attached to a string so they don't fly like they normally would. Our ball also kept getting stuck at the end of the lane by the pins. Came to Bowl & Barrel a couple of weeks ago for some afternoon bowling. The place was nearly empty, except for two other customers and a handful of employees. While the aesthetic is a vintage, rustic, industrial kind of look - and it's incredibly flattering - it falls short when it comes to the actual bowling experience. Firstly, there were far too many balls crammed on the loading dock, and most of them felt old and hunky, and were covered in a coat of some oily substance (presumably wax?) that got all over my hands every time it was my turn to bowl. Which was weird, because the lanes didn't seem to be properly waxed. And every time we did bowl, our balls seemed to always lean to the right. But what was most frustrating, was that even if we knocked all of the pins down (getting a strike or spare), the front/center pin would get picked back up and never count. It was like it was impossible to get a strike or spare? Not sure if that's normal for them to do, or if our lane was just malfunctioning, or what. We ordered the green chile grilled cheese sandwiches served on jalapeno cheddar bread. The sandwiches were good and flavorful, but a little too strong on the green chile that it was overpowering the rest of the ingredients. The service was nice, however. The girl at the front desk was new so she accidentally charged us more than she was supposed to, but she was really kind and quick to fix the issue. Our server was also really kind but after taking our order, she never came back to check up on us after giving us our food. We had to walk to the bar to get our waters refilled, which was interesting since (like I said) the place was practically empty and most of the employees were just standing around talking to each other. They were playing pop music that you'd typically hear on the radio and it was somewhat loud, and did not match the ambiance of the place at all. You'd think a place that prides itself on vintage looks and style would play older, jazzier music to match that aesthetic and really set the mood. Instead, it felt like we were bowling inside of a Forever 21. (Seriously, what is the obsession with every store/facility playing loud generic pop music, even if it doesn't fit the aesthetic at all?) Lastly, it was extremely hot inside to the point that we began sweating. The place has so much potential, if only it put more of its attention onto the actual quality of bowling, food and services that it offers. (Especially for such high prices!) Food rating: 5 / 10. Aesthetics are very nice, but literally took forever for them to bring our drinks and food - although did give us a free 30 minutes extra of bowling and took the food off our bill since it took so long (45 minutes) Do not like the actual bowling lanes themselves - pins are attached to strings that get tangled and stuck constantly and you have to wait for the thing to fix itself which can take around 10 minutes, and that sometimes your balls get stuck behind the pins and you have to get another ball to dislodge it. Half the lanes bumpers are stuck and don't pull up all the way on 1 side Overall not bad experience, just feels like they need more staff cause there was only 3 waitresses (super nice) for the whole alley and 1 front desk/shoe stand person - Monday prices we paid $21 for 2 people for an hour of bowling, fries were $6 and very good read more

Honestly, I thought this place was a sit-down restaurant, in the same genre as The General Public next door. But, a bowling alley with 15 lanes at The Rim? Totally awesome. The food is a step, perhaps several above normal bowling alley fare. The interior is like an old industrial loft/manufacturing space/factory, with the ceiling covered in reclaimed wood. The cashier stand is made from two old barrels, which lends a nice vibe to the space. Really cool, by the way. The service still has some minor issues, such as not all the tables having a QR code to scan for the menu, which will take you to the website. But, a server will come by to take your order, collect your card, and when you're ready to close out, just let the server know. It's reasonably priced and a lot closer to home than I expected. This is a cool place to grab some food,drinks and bowl your butt off. We really enjoyed the vibe of the place. It's only three stars because we had multiple issues while we were bowling. Our balls wouldn't come back to us and the pins would not come back after the fallen pins were cleaned up. The manager eventually fixed all the issues and gave us extra time for us to bowl. I will bowl there again and see if the service improves. It's $30 an hour to bowl and shoe rentals cost you $6. If you are in the area check them out to see how things goes for you. read more

This is not your ordinary bowling alley with greasy food, broken down lanes, old, disgusting shoes, etc. In fact, it's quite the contrary. Let's talk about the bowling first - lanes are in perfect condition, the electronic scoreboards work flawlessly, the ball return works perfectly, and the shoes are in immaculate condition. The bowling balls could use a bit more TLC, but that's the only downside to the bowling aspect that I can think of. Food: Let's start with the pizza! The pizza is really good. Cooked perfectly so the crust is crispy but not overly so. Fresh, quality ingredients go into their pizzas. They have five or six to choose from and they range between $18 and $25 - so yeah, they're good, but a bit pricey. But remember, this ain't Pizza Hut. They've got sliders and other appetizers to choose from, and everything I have tried is good here. It's several notches above your standard bowling alley food. Good for groups! I've attended two group outings here - the last one was a Christmas party. There were at least three separate, but large parties happening at the same time. They have long tables in front of the bowling lanes where they stage the food, and the service was excellent. I highly recommend them for a group event, but contact them ahead of time. I'm only docking them half a star because of the price of the food. As others have said, it's pricey, but it's really good food, so I'm not going to hate on them too much for that. All in all, I've never had a complaint when I go, so I'm keeping this one on my list. read more

Located in The Rim and probably gaining a lot of business through location alone, this bowling alley might be resting on its laurels. The industrial look that was so prevalent in the early 2000s is starting to look dated, which would not have necessarily been a bad thing if I didn't keep tripping on the dilapidated carpet on our lane (lane 5). The wear and tear was a physical reminder of a trend that is not aging gracefully. Edison lightbulbs and flannel shirts are just not as hip as they once were. We had too many balls on our ball return with nowhere else to put them that the bell to tell us we had too many balls on our ball return just kept ringing. There was storage underneath the ball return and that was full. At one point, the manager came over and scolded us for having too many balls on our ball return, only to realize we had nowhere else to put them. It was clear that he felt bad for scolding us by his tone shift, but it did rub me the wrong way that his automatic response was to blame us. The servers were great, but it was busy and they looked a little overwhelmed. We ordered the dog pile, which was great! The hot dogs snapped in your mouth and I love when they do that. No one gave us napkins though. We tried to grab someone to no avail, so we had to go up to the bar and grab beverage napkins. The beers we ordered at the bar came in a frosty mug. My husband loved that, too! Overall, it was alright for the hour we were there and the food was tasty. It needs improvement, maybe fix the carpet at the lanes and don't blame the customers for things that fall under your umbrella of responsibility. We might go back if we're meeting friends but it will not be our first choice for a night bowling. read more

Outstanding bowling experience enhanced by a high emphasis on great service, great selection of beverages, and solid food. Regarding service, everyone from the gentleman who checked us in, the waiter and busser were professional, friendly and attentive. We had a large group of ten teenage boys, two elementary schools age girls, and two adults. As you can imagine, we all had different needs but all were met. One of our kids accidentally dropped half a pizza and without hesitation, the waiter got us a new one. This is the 4th time I've been here and I'm late on giving a review however I've never had less than a 5 star experience. Considering our group size, this is an easy 6 star business. read more

For my first time here I had a great time!!!! This is not your traditional bowling alley but I love that the day I called they were able to reserve me a spot. So call ahead for availability. It made is so much easier than to have to wait around for a lane. The lanes were spacious and I didn't feel like I was sharing with anyone else except our party. I asked for a difficult task of splitting the cost of our bowling between 6 couples and they were quick to say yes and help. Today we stopped in to bowl and eat to celebrate my sons 14th birthday and had such a great visit and service. We were greeted at the front promptly and escorted to our lane by Sal who introduced us to our server Anthony. Anthony was very attentive and had great suggestions for food and drinks. We enjoyed the pizza I highly recommend it if you like Grimaldis this pizza is way better ! We started with spinach dip and fries that were tasty ! Burgers in a bag were a hit with the kids bacon Mayo is delish. Anthony suggested ranch water for a refreshing drink and it did not disappoint. Sadly we can't recommend this place. We were a group of 11 on two lanes and had glitch after glitch with the scoring and many of our bowlers didn't even get to bowl their 2nd turn. They tried helping us at first but then our time ran out and only two bowlers got to bowl the last frame. So our friendly family bowl didn't end with any real winners since the scores were messed up and the last frames not finished. Also there was just one waitress on the shift and she did her best but was too busy to really attend to the needs. Lastly the place is run by very young adults or teens who really don't care if the guests are happy. They are just punching a clock and doing their time. I doubt this place will be around for the long haul which is too bad because it could be a great addition to the entertainment of the Rim. read more

We had reservations for. 2 hour party. Spent lots of money on drinks and food and waited for 30 minutes after our reservation time to finally get our lane and be seated. They then told us that since the party before us went long, we would only be able to bowl for 1.5 hours. We received horrible customer service, especially from Jen. They cut off our game 15 minutes early and did not allow us to finish. We waited too long for our drinks and received some bad attitude from the employees. I don't usually leave bad reviews, in fact, this is the only one I've ever left. It was that bad. There are tons of things to do in San Antonio. Spend your money elsewhere.
