You can believe the hype! I didn't add any pictures; I think that has been adequately covered. I stopped by last Saturday. It was a beautiful day, and there were about 25 people in line already. I ordered the full order ($14), which includes 5 pieces of fish and fries. The pieces of fish are smaller than some places, but they were great! In fact, the fish to breading ratio was excellent. A lot of times, PNW restaurants and pubs will 'over bread' their fish. They are so proud of their beer batter, that they use WAY too much. That was not the case at the Bowpicker. Real quaint place with just three folks working on this tiny outdoor place but there was a line 10 deep when I walked up. Folks, they only take cash but I knew ahead of time. I have never had beer battered albacore tuna and I will say I might never go back to cod or halibut. I can hear the cans of beer opening as they made thr fish to order! Like, who does that, apparently these folks take fish'n'chips seriously. Don't let the pictures fool you, the tuna pieces are minimum four bites. Finally, after so many years of waiting, I made it to Astoria when these folks were open. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely. Even at 5 minutes after opening, there was a line; definitely a good sign. Never mind the novelty of having the entire operation inside a land docked boat. Or that they only have one item on the menu. I can only describe the batter as crispy fluffy, somewhat unique in the world of fish and chips. Also that they use tuna chunks is rather different, but it works. Not sure if it's intentional, but the fries were a bit of a mixed bag, with the full spectrum of tiny thin crispies to the thick ones. I guess you end up with your preferred ones at some point. The waiting line moves quite quickly, so don't be put off by it. Highly recommend. read more

I woke up this morning and decided that it would be a boring day if I just sat at home all day. The crazy weather of the past week had momentarily subsided. I jumped on the Puget Island Ferry and headed for Astoria with only one priority: hope that I could get some battered and fried albacore tuna at The Bowpicker. I was so happy to pull up and see only two people in line. The rain had stopped for a few minutes. The PNW-based gods had smiled upon me in so many ways. I immediately ordered one full order. I then waited about ten minutes for my fresh, made to order meal. The person Klamath Falls resident beside me in line asked, "Is this place popular?" I laughed. I explained that I had just forded a river and driven 30 miles to possibly stand in line for 30 minutes in the rain for some of the best battered fish I have had in my entire life. The guy behind him said he drove from Salem. After a fun chat, my food was delivered and I hustled to the car as a squall started to spit moisture on the line of faithful customers that had now amassed. Needless to say, the fish was everything I remembered. The steak fries (with some Johnny's Seasoning Salt were scrumptious. The only problem was that I should have ordered more.... We have wanted to try this place for two years. It's popular with the locals and tourist alike. First thing you see is an old boat on a trailer with a staircase leading up and down with a line of people funneling their way through. The menu is pretty short with two items Fish and chips. We waited in line with a view of the Marine museum and coast guard ship, tankers in the Columbia River. Placed order for one portion to share. Received 5 pieces of fish and fries. The fish is made with Albacore Tuna which makes for a better flavor in my opinion. I'm not a fan of paste fries which theirs were otherwise I would have given them 5 stars. What could be better than a day drip to the coast, salty air and fresh fried fish and chips? Not much. I took a little day trip to Seaside and Astoria for some clam chowder and some fish and chips. Now I've been out to Astoria many times and when I head into the area, I always park in the same parking lot which happens to be a half a block from Bowpicker's. There is always a line. So be prepared to wait. And you should wait because it is well worth it. Flaky mild white fish perfectly fried up with a side of tartar sauce and steak fries. The fish was simply amazing, firm but really moist and seasoned well. The crust just cracked in your mouth. I just wish the same care had been taken with the fries instead of frozen ones. Oh well, doesn't mean I wouldn't stand in the line again. Two options of a three piece or a six piece and you can always add more fish. Can't go wrong there. Just go there. Bowpicker has the best fish & chips I've ever had, period. The fish is perfect, the breading is perfect, and the fries are top-notch too. Every time I want fish & chips, I don't mind the two hour drive to get there from Gig Harbor. It's on my schedule now twice a year. If you make the drive, you won't be disappointed. Dining is outside or in your car, but that's the only downside if the weather sucks. There are a couple of picknick tables for nice weather, but the nicer the weather, the longer the line. If it's a nice weather day, you can always take a lawnchair for an enjoyable lunch. read more

I was finally able to stop and get some fish and chips without there being a huge line. Yes, it's a unique place to grab some food and yes, all they have is fish and chips. Basically, two orders, 1/2 size with 3 pieces and full order with 5. The tuna was lightly battered and well cooked. Is it something to rave over, not for me really. It's the first time I had tuna this way and I have to say, I prefer beer battered cod instead. Just a personal preference so don't let that make you not want to try here. Super friendly people working the place. If you go, be prepared to wait a fair bit of time and they only take cash and don't park in the gravel parking lot, that's reserved for the Coast Guard. Located near the edge of the main downtown area is a boat shaped food cart. You'll clearly see it because there's a 20-30 minute line and nothing else around. Why the wait? Well, they serve up well executed fish and chips. Probably the most unique fish and chips I've had, they're more like chicken nuggets because the tuna steaks are very meaty and the batter is thin and crispy with minimal separation from the meat. They're definitely hearty and a half order is more than enough for one person. I could've used some lemon or hot sauce, but in times of Covid I'm sure they're minimizing contact points. There are stairs to walk up to get to the ordering window. This was a 2 person band, one person taking orders and prepping food and the other at the checkout window. When you finish ordering there's ton of condiments/toppings you can add to your fish. I added pepper and a shake of salt. There was also soy sauce, many different hot sauces and the fish comes with tartar and ketchup (I wish I asked for double ketchup instead!) The fries were your typical steak fries, not bad but you're coming for the fish. Let me say I am not a seafood person, and this fish was GOOD. Decided to go through Astoria for mainly one reason...Bowpickers. Every time we make our way to or through Astoria, Bowpicker Fish & Chips is a MUST STOP when it is open. There is nothing like Albacore Tuna that is lightly battered and deep fried to a beautiful golden nugget. The fries (or "chips") are also done to a nice golden crisp. However, if you choose to sleep the fries, you can opt to get an extra piece of Albacore. Worth it! Bowpickers Fish & Chips, in my opinion, is an Astoria Landmark and deserves recognition for what this place brings. As I always say, try it once and decide for yourself. DEFINITELY WORTH A TRY!
