I just went there and saw a Sprinter van dropping off boxes of food and drinks . I ordered the whole basket of fish and chips. It took them about 3 minutes to produce the order. Which was crap it was cold fry's were not cooked all the way through. The fish tasted like tuna and it was cool and not hot . You have to walk west on Duane street to sit down a bench to eat. Or across the street a picnic table that people use to wait for the bus / Streetcar . You should go somewhere else to eat fish and chips. I came here years ago and the fish and chips were sooo good. We made a special trip to Astoria today just for the fish and chips. Within 2 minutes from ordering it was ready. Completely stumbled upon this place driving through Astoria and only realized when we saw the line that this place has some kind of cult following. This is the first time I've had fish and chips with tuna and not some kind of white fish. We got a full order to share and the portion was pretty big. The taste was very interesting and different but the lacked the moistness of a fattier fish like cod. The breading was very light though not very well seasoned. There was a variety of salt, pepper, bottled lemon juice, hot sauce, etc. on the condiment bar at the end of the counter, and it comes with tartar sauce and ketchup. Would have been nice to have some fresh lemons to squeeze over. The chips were the proper steak fry variety. We took our food and ate at the nearby Scandinavian-themed park right at the waterfront. This place has been on my list to try out. After six years if missing out due to the line being long or I arrived at a time they were closed. I finally made a random trip from Lakewood WA to try this place out. This is truly the best fry fish I ever had. I stopped two times on the same trip it was that delicious. The fried fish was stellar. The menu is very simple what more do you want? This place inspired me to try my method with the fish they use. We love to swing by the Bowpicker for fish and chips when we visit Astoria. Because their fish is tuna, it's pretty unique...oh yeah, not to mention it's cooked and served out of an old fishing vessel! The first time we had their fish and chips, we loved it and it was 10/10. I'm partial to thick steak fries so I was super satisfied. On our recent visit, there was a crowd and we waited in line for more than a half hour and the fish was not quite as good, but maybe we had high expectations after our first go. There was much discussion about this in my group, and I think you should at least pronounce the name of the restaurant correctly. But you will feel like it's at least two lines, maybe three. The question that smart people will ask is, "Is it worth the wait?" And the answer depends on how you feel about fish and chips. Bowpicker is one of those places that does a thing right and they stick to it. We travels from far to have their famous fish and chips. They did not let us down. Their fish is not the cod, it's Ahi Tuna! It is still firm and has a nice flavor. Not the same as cod, so don't expect the same experience. The batter is flavorful and their chips are awesome. My only issue was the I wanted more! Lol Really they are great and their food is delicious. Know that it is cash only, if you forget go to the gas station across the street. Visiting family for a week and Astoria, decided we must stop at the famous bowpicker fish and chips boat. We did arrive about 25 minutes before they opened up to find a line of about 10 people. Once the Establishment had opened the line moved quickly. The staff was moving quickly and the lady at the counter was professional and courteous. The view of the water is lovely from the restaurant area, there are picnic benches around for casual picnic style lunch. At times food brings us joy. At Bowpicker Fish and Chips it brought me close to what must be fish and chips heaven! We learned about this small, unique fish and chips stand from my former daughter-in-law who lives 3 thousand miles away. An old cabin cruiser has been repurposed into a walk-up fish stand. But its uniqueness is only a part of the story. When you make fish and chips you think of cod or haddock, or even pollock. But no...the fish used here is tuna! My first thought was tuna? My tuna comes in a can. Not so at Bowpicker. This was the BEST fish and chips I've ever had. That in itself is a broad statement since I've spent time in England stuffing my face with (what I thought ) was the best in the world. I would never have thought that tuna fish would fry up into the most delectable piece of fish I've ever had. The line was long but moved very quickly. From the end of the line to getting my food was 27 minutes. The line had about 50 people (we went at lunch time). Do yourself a favor if visiting Astoria, or taking a beautiful drive one hour from Portland to the seashore stop in and make a memory you'll never forget . T-U-N-A. Thats your TLDR. Wow, fantastic batter fried albacore here. They have the seasoning down pat and its delicious. Looking for the unassuming littlered/white fishing boat parked up one block from the main road. As you approach, go up the stairs from the left, if you're lucky the chef will ask you your order before you get up to the counter. Generous servings of fish. Perfectly cooked. Steak fries too. He asked if we were eating in the car or going home. Once you say going home he promptly filled several plastic cups with tartar/ketchup without asking. Probably my only 'dis' here, I HATE those unrecyclable single use cups and would've waived him off of that. Otherwise, all packaging was earth friendly. If you've never had fried tuna before, well, its texture is almost that of chicken. Yes. Not fishy tasting. We 3 devoured all of ours. Friendly service, cooked right, orders right. I really enjoyed this place. I will say I heard rumors of a crazy line and while we were lucky enough to get into line with only two people in front of us, we did see the start of a line forming. And we noticed a decent size line when our friends were standing there the next day. I really liked these fish and chips. The batter is so amazing. Super crispy and flaky. The fish itself is like a fish nugget. The fries were really good as well, though I should have thrown a little seasoning salt on them. Outside of that everything was really good. My notes. My kids love fish and chips and they made it their mission to try all the fish and chips that are recommended in Astoria and these were the best as far as the fish goes. The fries are just regular frozen steak fries you buy in the freezer section of the store and same goes for the condiments. Just large tubs of pre-made ketchup and tartar. It's the only reason this place wasn't 5 stars. Homemade tartar sauce would make this place unbeatable.
