The samples themselves were more than generous. The homemade BBQ is divine. The meat is tender and smokey, reminiscent of the keawe wood. My boyfriend and I wanted to try the brisket, but the man was sold out--rightfully so. We settle on the rib tips. Make sure to bring cash to avoid the $2 surcharge. Also be sure to tip! This man straight up sacrifices his life to prepare his delicious bbq. I watched him stand infront of his impressive smoker with huge clouds of smoke flying directly at him without a bother, it was amazing. Whenever i go to 76 to assist the top notch mechanic's there, i always miss Sean's bbq! Today i finally got to try it and meet him aswell, super cool guy. I could tell by watching him prepare his bbq that he is very passionate about his craft, the product he produces sums it up. I got the rib tip plate and got a piece of chicken aswell, this was honestly the best bbq i had in my life so far. Right next to McDonalds King St, it's some of the best bbq I've had in a while. I ordered the chicken and rib tip mix plate and man was it good. First thing is that if you're going to be serving lunch, you should be prepared. Especially this Friday 8 Aug at the airshow, you should have your food ready to be served. I ordered 2 brisket plates. You only had enough for 1 plate. So I got the rib tips plate as the second plate. Brisket is supposed to be fork tender. It was not. The ribs were also atrocious. Barely edible and not tender. Drive past this bbq trailer numerous times on South King Street adjacent to the McCully McDonalds. Boxier Jones BBq sits on the Diamon Head end of the Union 76 gas station and is open Wednesdays through Sundays. Suggest calling Sean Jones before hand to check menu availability and timing of when the brisket and ribs are ready. Sean is really friendly but getting into an extended conversation with him might screw up your order. We ordered a half rack of ribs and a combo plate with rib tips and pulled pork. Both plates came with baked beans and canned corn. When we got home I noticed that our combo plate had pulled pork and chicken. Made a quick call to Sean and I drove down later in the afternoon before he closed to pick up the rib tips. Pulled pork was very tender with a hint of smoke. Ribs were firm (not fall off the bone) but in a good way. The rib tips were also firm but very tasty. All three meats use Sean's bbq sauce which leans towards the vinegary side. The vinegar helps to cut the fattiness of the meat and while its not Sweet Baby Rays it's Sean's recipe and I like it a lot. The chicken was very tasty and tender so we were able to sample everything on Sean's menu except for his brisket. The brisket came out around 4:00 pm and we couldn't make the timing work. That's why I suggest you calling Sean to see when his ribs and brisket are ready. Seems that the chicken and pulled pork were ready when we arrived around 12:30 pm. Authentic BBQ is hard to find in the Honolulu area so give Bowie's BBQ a try the next time you have a craving for some BBQ. Btw, no rice or other sides. Only baked beans and corn for now. Located now at the 76 Gas Station Lot closer to the McCully McDonalds. It's the same location where the Pizza truck once was. Sean Paul is the owner and he is usually there from Wednesday through Sunday from lunch time until he's sold out. If it's raining hard, he may not be able to get his grill going and may be closed for the day. Just call to be sure and it's best to call early and pre-order what you want. I wasn't able to get the brisket during my lunch time since it wasn't ready but I did try the ribs and got the chicken on the side. It wasn't a combo but he does have chicken and rib tips as a combo. Note, the brisket is only available on Thursday! The pork ribs was meaty but not as tender where it falls off the bone but the chicken was super soft and delicious. The tasty southern bbq sauce was put on both chicken and ribs. I didn't asked but I guess he only had corn on that day since there wasn't any beans like the other photos have shown. I guess it doesn't come with a starch. He was very accommodating and kind during the times he was sold out, closed due to rain and when the brisket wasn't going to be ready by lunch time. I always fill gas at the station by my apartment on the corner of King and Wiliwili. There was a Magoo's pizza truck doing business on the premises and one day, POOF! They're gone! In its place was a shiny new trailer. It says "Bozie Jones BBQ". At first I wondered about the reasoning behind having an open-flame bbq / smoker sharing a lot with a gas station.... But then again, it's about a good 40 feet from the closest pump. Every time I fill gas, I see the trailer but it's closed. A couple of times it was open but I guess the person was just opening up so all I smelled was burning wood. Today, I came in to fill up after a round of golf and it hit me: The aroma of meat cooking on a keawe fire.... I couldn't resist. I walked over and asked what his specialty was. "Brisket." He replied. " Lemme give you a sample and you tell me if it ain't tender." The grill master takes a piece on a fork, dips it in his special BBQ sauce and hands it to me. OMG!! Beef-flavored marshmallow. That's the only way I can describe it! The sauce is fruity and tangy, sweet but not overbearing. The Real Deal Another trip to Food Truck Alley Heaven and I struck gold.. errr struck BBQ rather! I was pleased to find a newish participant here, a rare spawn rather! As I walked up to this truck the owner was cutting up some meat on a board. He offered me to try some. Smoked pulled pork, rough chopped, mmm soo good. I work in downtown Honolulu and noticed a red colored food truck on Punchbowl Street the last few days. There's been a ton of people waiting in line. Out of curiosity, I decided to check this red food truck out. You could smell the smoked meat in the air as I approached the food truck. It turned out to be Bozie, a southern smoked BBQ truck. Can't recommend for food-safety reasons but wanted to like it. It smelled good from a distance, not so good from close up. He was cutting up a raw rib rack when we got there. The same cutting board, gloves & knife he used for raw meat prep was then used to cut and serve our ribs, with no kind of washing in between. Lots of flies kept landing on the meat, raw and cooked. His ingenious kitchen is built into a trailer, which completely opens revealing his rice cookers, bean cookers, storage areas, and places to cook. All evening sitting in the bar, we kept smelling the smoking meats and had to give it a try on the way out. We ordered two plates of BBQ chicken with rice and beans on the side. He piled the meat on and included some pork and other options to try. The sauce was so flavorful; the meat moist despite being cooked almost black. I loved the beans, sweet and savory.
