Warning: Unexpected $1,017 bill after being told visit was covered…read more I visited Conyers Smiles Dentistry as a new patient for what I was told was a routine exam. When I arrived, staff confirmed my Cigna insurance had been verified and my visit was covered. I paid a copay and thought nothing of it. Weeks later I received an Explanation of Benefits showing I owe $1,017 out of pocket for a Cone Beam CT Scan, multiple Oral/Facial Imaging procedures, and Saliva Testing. None of these were explained to me before, during, or after my appointment. No treatment plan was shown to me. No cost estimate was provided. I was never told any of this was being done. My insurance denied all of it. Cigna flagged the saliva test as "not a dental service" and the CT scan as simply not covered neither of which are standard for a new patient checkup. I am now formally disputing these charges with the practice, Smile Generation corporate, and the Georgia Board of Dentistry. I would caution anyone especially new patients to ask for a written cost estimate and treatment plan BEFORE allowing any procedures to be performed here.

Our orthodontist was going to be taking his vacation once we returned, so we would have to go see another orthodontist that would be covering while he is on vacation. His office staff suggested that we try to find a local orthodontist that might be able to see her while we are still in Decatur, so that she did not have to stay uncomfortable while on vacation. I called one office and it was going to be $150 to clip a wire. I called a second office and they were going to charge $360 to clip the wire. My best friend and her husband suggested that I call Decatur Orthodontics, so I did. Allyssa was my first interaction with the office. She was kind and super helpful. She was able to get us in right away. Our visit was less than 5 minutes once we arrived. The office staff was helpful, kind, and extremely efficient. The office was super clean and very organized. They were kind enough to take care of this for us as a complimentary service. If we lived in Decatur, this is where we would go! One of the staff members took panoramic X-rays and photos. I was really surprised when the Dr said that my bite was very good and that I didn't need treatment. I was amazed that this orthodontist would not recommend braces and treatment and turn down the money that they could collect. The assistant said "we would never treat you unless you truly needed it" I am very impressed with the honesty and I will refer this office to others.

This place has gone from a customer-friendly organization where the doctor knew what was going on with you and what you needed before he called you back to a disorganized mess. I watched as more than one patient was called into the office area, then called again by someone else after they'd already gone back with the first person. My husband tells me it also happened with me. Though I'd clearly explained to the receptionist that I just wanted new retainers, the man I'm assuming to be the orthodontist (he never introduced himself), seemed confused about what I wanted, changed his mind repeatedly about what he was doing and when I'd get my new retainers, and didn't listen when I told him what I needed. He wasted so much time, because he made assumptions rather than asking and listening. Meanwhile, there are 20 other people waiting for Sir Incompetence to be done with me, because we were all scheduled for the same time. Very unprofessional.
