Embellishment thy name is Princeton. Why call a business that sells baked goods a bakery when what we really need is a new school "bread boutique." No self-respecting connoisseur or influencer worth their curated sea salt would stand for anything less than hand-crafted loaves touched by the Almighty. Well, I stand corrected. Their baguettes and Zucchini bread are outstanding and worthy of any hosanna I could summon. If your going to engage in marketing grandiosity it's nice to know Princeton's Bread Boutique delivers. After my first bite of the pistachio-crusted croissant here, I swallowed and pronounced, "People need to know about this place." We'd turned in here after feeling discouraged by the long lines at another nearby bakery. Here, it was sunny, quiet, and redolent of that heady bread aroma. Another personally good sign was seeing several empty trays in the windows. When a bakery 'sells out' of stuff, I feel like I've uncovered a hot spot. Here's where I need to make a confession: I like croissants a little more than a normal human being should. Really, I'm a croissant addict. So we already knew I'd like these. But ooh la la, these were especially fine. One had rough chunks of pistachio, a subtle, sticky glaze, and - sweet Jesus - pistachio cream on the inside. When my husband saw the pecan pie croissant, we knew I was done for. Behind the counter, there's a large selection of bread loaves, along with a small savory menu. Lovely ambiance and friendly staff. I tried the chocolate almond croissant and it was delicious. So many pastry and drink options to choose from. Would recommend coming here on days when Princeton is busy. It's less crowded than the other cafes in the area, but still just as charming. read more

Bread Boutique opened last month in Eclair Cafe's old location on Witherspoon. They're a bread store owned by the same hospitality group as Chez Alice, Peacock Inn, and Proof. They carry a range of loaves, viennoiseries, bread rolls, cookies, sandwiches, drinks, and some weekend specials like challah and babka. There's limited seating inside, similar to the set-up when it was Eclair Cafe. Their breads are shipped in every morning from the same off-site facility that makes Chez Alice's baked goods. I only tried a few items here but wasn't a fan: they were dry and a bit commercial tasting, comparable to Terra Momo across the street. I think Little Chef and The Pastry Room are better options for viennoiseries downtown, and Lost Bread Co at the farmers market and Lillipies in the shopping center both have better bread in my opinion. read more

Nice staff, served with a smile, despite the fact they'd clearly been working hard and the place was busy. Now to the issue of the bread... Tried the epi-baguette. Not very good. Commercial tasting; not adequately crusty on the outside, and not the right chew on the inside. Overbearing soft flour mouthfeel. As a passport-carrying European, with half a century of baguette consumption under my (expanding) belt, Bread Boutique is serving-up a pale shadow of the genuine article. If you're ever in North Jersey, find Liv Breads, and try their epi-baguette. That's the real thing. Princeton needs a proper bakery. Although, while not wholly in the traditional French style, croissants from the Little Chef (South Tulane, Princeton) are worth the wait. And, as time passes, I think I am coming to the conclusion that they surpass many top French offerings. But that's not the case at Bread Boutique. Maybe it's simply that fact that most Princeton consumers don't know what the real thing is, which is perfectly understandable, if a little surprising. read more

We had almond croissant, spinach and cream cheese croissant, and pastrami on rye sandwich. 1) almond croissant: excellent. very flaky, buttery with plenty of sliced almond toppings & the almond paste filling. If I have to nitpick, I'd say the filling's a tad on the sweet side (personal preference). 2) spinach & cream cheese croissant was Ok. Again, the croissant itself was good, but I expected the filling to be more flavorful (and just more filling, period). 3) pastrami on rye: flavor was good, the bread was excellent, but the amount of pastrami in the sandwich was paltry. If they'd double the meat, that'd add another star to this sandwich. Next time we'll try their breads. read more

Was passing through Princeton, took a short break to look around. while walking around the main commerce area near the university I saw the bread boutique. It looked interesting from the street, so I went in. The space is small but feels spacious. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Many delicious looking items in the display cases. First I saw the pain au chocolat, then the almond croissant. I was torn between the two and said so. The helpful staff pointed out I could have both, as they had a croissant with both chocolate with almonds.... Two in one! the croissant was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The balance of both chocolate and almond paste was spot on! If back in Princeton again I will definitely return for another! read more

Disappointing all around. Chocolate croissant was way too soft, mushy is the word for it. It's small in size and the texture is way off. The bagel is hard and chewy, like chewing on a rubber. We returned the first one and the 2nd one was the same, texture is way off from how a normal bagel should be. Cappuccino was tasteless and diluted like water. Giving an extra star for the cute interior setting, it's clean and modern. A nice place to sit and relax, only if their food and drink were decent. read more

I came in today and was torn between the spinach and cream cheese croissant and the ham and gruyere croissant. I ended up getting the spinach and cream cheese croissant. The texture of the croissant was ok but the contents therein were terrible. First of all there was no cream cheese at all, although being advertised as part of the croissant. The spinach inside was cold, didnt seem cooked and not seasoned at all. I would not order again. Service was okay. It wasn't the warm, friendly experience that's typical of Princeton cafes. Croissants were good. However the quality has significantly decreased over the past two years. They are smaller with less filling and more expensive. In addition, the service is slow. The cashier herself was quite rude as well- double charging and when asked about this, she rolled her eyes and made a face. New bakery in downtown Princeton. Bread is similar to Terra Momo across the street. Pretty good except for the baguettes, which are not good and incredibly expensive (over $4). Pastries are average at best. Almond croissants were too sweet, chocolate croissants lacked chocolate, plain croissants were under cooked. Everything tasted a bit "bready", like in a supermarket. My favorite: the salmon + cream cheese croissant. Rich, buttery, plentiful filling, and smoky flavor. Perfect with my small world latte for a weekend morning snack. The potato focaccia was really yummy too, just needed a sprinkling of more salt/seasoning. The olive focaccia was delicious. So that said, when I need a loaf of bread, my instinct is still to hit up Terra Momo, but only because they haven't done me wrong yet in that department. Purchased a loaf in the afternoon that was seemingly sitting out for a full 24 hours or so. It was not soft inside and had that crunchy sitting out taste. Also, the employees were eating chicken wings in full view of anyone who approached the check out counter. Not professional. Not to mention, I'm not interested in purchasing bread from a bakery that smells like spicy chicken. Note to management - oversee your staff. We won't be returning. $8 for day old bread from a supposed gourmet bakery with a side of smelly chicken wings..that's way too much. Step it up.
