After watching an episode of Seinfeld one night, I was in search of the best babka in the city and came across multiple lists that included Breads Bakery so I gave it a try. I have to say their babka just might be the best in the city, albeit a little pricier than the rest. I got the chocolate babka. It was rich and moist and just delightful. The service was fairly quick and friendly. The smell of the delicious baked goods waft in the air. My sweet tooth is eager to try the rest of what they offer although my waist line says otherwise and to stick to new years resolutions. I should say that Bread Bakeries are not quite cafes where you can sit around and hang out with friends. They're pick up and go type places. read more

After all these years, Breads continue to be one of my favorite go to spots for all kinds of pastries. The staff is always ultra friendly and is always helpful with selections and variety. The sit-down space is a nice touch but weather permitting it is much nicer to sit and dip in USP. After more than 10 years of visits, I finally got a chance to try the famous chocolate babka and what an experience it was! This place is amazing! Gadi Peleg, the owner, was there the day we went, and he couldn't have been more welcoming. The borekas are some of the best I've ever had. They also have a new Rye Babka which may even be better than their excellent classic chocolate babka. Whenever I see a Breads Bakery, it's a hidden rule where I must walk in and get at least a rugelach. They are the best I've ever had and while you can have ten in one sitting, they're extremely satiating and are a wonderful treat. I got the cheese straw and pain au chocolat as well and the flakiness was unreal. This is a must go-to spot!! Also, while I didn't get this Brussels sprout tart, it looks delicious. Was on the hunt for famous chocolate babka in the city and Breads Bakery had popped up multiple times in my research. We were able to find a location near where we were shopping and stopped by to take a look. Unfortunately the babka was not offered sliced or in individual portions, so I couldn't buy a whole loaf and finish it myself (I guess I probably could eat it all myself, but I had too many food spots to hit on this trip). They had so many beautiful types of pastries and breads displayed that it was hard to choose what to try. We ended up ordering their chocolate rugelach, which also was one of their famous items, and their fig hamantaschen which also looked really good. I also bought some of their house made granola which was easy to transport home. The chocolate rugelach was basically a small croissant and it was phenomenal. It had the perfect amount of chocolate and the buttery, flaky dough was to die for. I could easily eat a ton of them in one sitting. The fig hamantaschen was also really good and unique. The fig was a little more on the bitter side, but still tasty. Overall a great experience and am now currently seeing if they deliver nationwide for their babka because we weren't able to stop by our last day to pick one up. read more

Yummy pastries! Kind of pricey but delicious croissants. Have cakes and loaves of bread you can grab to go as well. Not super cute inside, more of a grab and go. Quick service and cashiers, they will even heat up your pastries if you go to the back register and ask! read more

In fact, it seems that prepackaged is the only way Breads sells their babkas, as I never see any fresh-out-of-the-oven ones. That's okay, though, as the loaves taste really fresh anyway, and their format makes it super easy to grab a bag for a dinner party or for gifting while out of town. Note that at $17 per loaf, they're a bit pricey. The babka itself is sooo good. The challah bread is soft and sweet with a crumbly crust. The swirls of dark chocolate and Nutella are creamy and decadent. read more

Really great sourdough baguette, I'm still thinking about it! I got the tahini spread and it went well with the baguette. My friend got the Mediterranean quiche which was vegetarian and had zucchini, feta, tomato, and onions. She loved it! They are very sweet even though we can in and out 30 mins before closing and they didn't have many other customers. It's a warm homely space and smells delicious! read more

We came here for an early breakfast, and we ordered: +a Scrambled Egg - scrambled egg sandwich with gouda cheese and chives +a Cured Salmon on Jerusalem Baguette - this was filled with cured salmon, cream cheese, sliced cucumbers, red onions, and chives on a sesame-studded Jerusalem baugette; note that this sandwich comes in 2 varieties - one with cucumbers, and one with tomatoes The Scrambled Egg seems to be prepared or heated to order; the Cured Salmon sammie was good; the baguette was slightly too chewy for my taste, but overall, the sammie was tasty and filling. There was free water dispenser by the little station from the case. I wanted to try their popular babka, but apparently, only the Bryant Park location sells by the slice - next time! Staff were friendly. There are a handful of seating inside, but most seem to take theirs to go. No fail place for lunch and breakfast. Service depends on the day. I spent a week working near Union Square so had breakfast daily. Food fresh, indoor eating clean, and solid effort to clean outdoor eating space next to a construction zone. Sone days service was quick, other days, at the front counter, two people waited on one person while line of 5+ people waited to pick out a baked good. Much greater efficiency in the back with the drinks. That said, the variety and quality make the wait tolerable. I'll be back next year. I won't get the egg sandwich, though; eggs undercooked and due to pre-prepared, tepid in temperature. . read more

if you're a New Yorker and haven't had a Breads Bakery babka, you're probably not an actual New Yorker! but you reply: "madman reviewer, i have no friends or family and can't order one whole babka loaf for myself" and i say: a babka is good for 4-5 days after being baked. if you can't finish one in a few days then you might NOT be a human! Breads is famously known for its babkas but i'd say that that the various baked loaves are also fantastic like the French Sourdough. Jerusalem bagels are also available here which i don't see often. the bakery space is very clean and well-maintained. most of the freshly baked items are up front. in the back is the packaged salads and sandwiches as well as a coffee area. the drip coffee is good especially paired with something sweet. don't know if all the staff are involved in the baking operation but they are friendly and pretty knowledgeable. Omg this bakery is absolutely delicious. I didn't take a picture of anything I ate because It was so good I had forgot! I got a rustic roll that was phenomenal. We also got a plain croissant, chocolate croissant, a chocolate rugelach, and a cheese stick. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Everyone working was so kind. I am a relative newcomer to Breads but would like to apply for cult membership. I've tried several "unglamorous" items (rather than the breads and babka) and found them all special. The hummus is wonderful. (Who knew there are degrees of "good" in hummus?) The taste is addictive and the texture, while smooth, has character--you can tell the chickpeas were recently leading vital lives and the parsley is a fine addition, as is the oil. The iced tea (English breakfast) is especially rich. And I just tried the gazpacho (in scarce supply) to gesture at low-calorie, vegetarian virtue: at first I gingerly sampled it but soon realized I had begun to drink it greedily, it's that savory and creamy (without the cream). I've always wanted to try this bakery out and I happened to be in the area needing a quick snack and stumbled upon it. We got the chocolate croissant and the almond croissant as well as some espressos to go with it. The croissants were all so deliciously buttery and flaky.
