If you have allergies to nuts, I strongly suggest to not buy any of their products. I have bought breads there like the banana and zucchini breads but without nuts. However they did have nuts and I have had this issue a few times now. I will not be going back becasue this issue has not been resolved and I will not risk having a full blown allergy reaction. I came close this last time because I didn't find the nuts til after my first bite. I had to act quickly. So I strongly suggest not going there with nut allergies. read more

Stopped into Breadsmith for the first time today and was very pleased that I did! Highlights: -Friendly employees. -Great selection. -Good prices! -Fresh and NO preservatives! -You can freeze bread if you won't be able to eat it all within 3-5 days. Bread already comes in freezer safe bags! I will definitely be coming back. The employee I spoke with also let me know they offer turkey-shaped bread in November and Christmas tree-shaped bread in December! So fun! read more

The quality was not what we were expecting and the service was not great. We were not welcomed with any sort of greeting and we were told "I can only get one item at a time" when we ordered a cinnamon roll and some bread. Not a large order by any means. Customer service is lacking. read more

I came in while an older lady with yellow-blonde hair was with another customer chitchatting which n didn't mind since I was looking at the muffins. Once she other costumer, the older lady did not greet me at all and instead just stared at me.. it rubbed me the wrong way since she was super chatty with the previous customer and seemed nice. I proceeded to ask if they had sourdough in which she responded "sorry, it sold out" I then proceeded to ask if there was an alternative or just any other bread in general and she said "no. There isn't..." while there was other bread options that she could've offered me to sell but she decided not to... the way she responded to me --very cold and staring at me made me feel uncomfortable as if it was racist in a way (I am Hispanic). Very rude lady. Service was awful. As soon as I entered, the lady looked upset and forced a "hi" after I greeted her... not welcoming at all. The selection left much to be desired. They have baguettes on the daily menu but she stated they only make them on certain days. I was eager to support locally and have some fresh bread, but honestly the sour dough bread I purchased, and the cinnamon buns, were just ok and the service sucked. We've tried several of their breads available at our local grocery store and the farmer's markets in the area and all were quite good. This was the first time we visited their actual bakery. All their breads freeze very well in our experience. Decent variety of breads ("plain," savory & dessert/sweet varieties) along with some dinner rolls, sweet rolls, scones & muffins. We were greeted right away when we entered and the girl who assisted us was very helpful in answering our questions & offering suggestions. We brought home a loaf of the English Muffin toasting bread (makes excellent toast & mighty tasty grilled cheese) and 2 kinds of scones (Maple Walnut & Cherry Almond - both very dense & delicious though the Cherry one really could have used more cherries in it). I like that their website lists nutritional information but I am disappointed their website doesn't also list the ingredients. That would be a nice addition. read more

Stopped in hoping to get a loaf of French bread. It was a Thursday afternoon and it turns out they only bake French bread on Fridays and Saturdays. The lady there was very helpful with suggestions for a similar bread. So I ended up getting the Italian bread which apparently is made with the same type of dough. Because it was already afternoon, the other pastry items were very limited. They usually have cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls and muffins. My boys were lucky to get one of the last m&m cookies and last chocolate pumpkin muffin. I know chocolate pumpkin does not sound like a great combination. But it was surprisingly very delicious. Probably the best thing we brought home from there. I'll be back to get the French bread. And hopefully early enough to try the brownie and cinnamon rolls too. read more

We've tried a few things so far: honey white loaf, French loaf, cinnamon swirl loaf, and the cinnamon rolls. My personal favorite so far is the honey white - makes great toast with a little butter and jam. Drooling just thinking about it! The cinnamon roll was the only thing that didn't blow us away. They were tasty, just doughier than we prefer. The first time we went was on a Saturday when they were nearly cleaned out. The cashier was very sympathetic and gave us a great tip: call ahead! Thankfully we didn't need to on our second visit - we went early and there was still plenty of variety. When the holidays start rolling around, we'll know to call first! We haven't had to freeze a loaf yet, but will likely need to after our last haul. The ladies at the store assured us they'll keep well in the freezer for 3 months and I take their word for it! They were so kind enough to give us extra bags in case we wanted to split up our loaves. We'll keep coming back; I can't imagine going back to grocery store bread! read more

I came in at closing time, which I acknowledged to the ladies at the counter. They were cool with it (thank you). I love bread; i love fresh bread; and i bake bread with passion. I tried a sample of poppyseed ?lemon? bread (which they were sold out of) and the blueberry pie bread. I love Blueberries but I spied the Cherry pie bread and jumped on that like white on rice. I put it back in a cool/dry place for later consumption; but i know it is good from the taste tests of two other breads. They are good, but I think it is a chain-store? Not sure. Anyway, thank you ladies for keeping open at the last second. I enjoyed the bread and St. Charles is such a lovely little place. So cute! read more

Breadsmith. Fancy bread for fancy people. My first bite of Breadsmith was at a friend's house on New Year's Eve. Someone set up a panini maker, a heavenly assortment of cheese, and some Breadsmith bread. The world's best grilled cheese was born in the last minutes of 2015. Even though a lot of that night is a blur, including the bottle of Andre I finished alone, the Breadsmith bread stuck with me. The multi-grain bread is very good. I found it at Woodman's the next week while grocery shopping, and I was impressed by the weight of this bread. The loaf itself is small but mighty; it felt like a brick in my hand. I wouldn't buy this all the time, since it was about $4 for a small loaf, but for something different or making some killer grilled cheese, I will buy the multi grain again. The dessert breads also piqued my interest - maybe next time! read more

So, I went in this morning getting a loaf or two for a training day at work. The Apple Bread and Monkey bread were Perfect! To be honest, I was looking for a few muffins and they were low on those. But that could be because they were a week and a half into reopening two stores. So the Bread. They were both made perfectly, great crust, soft insides. I've been to Breadsmith plenty of times, but I've never reviewed it... here it goes! If you love freshly baked bread, this is the spot for you! They have an amazing selection of savory and sweet breads. They also have great cookies!!!! Everything is baked on site, and it all tastes very fresh. I buy from this store, as well as from the booth they have set up at the Wheaton French Market. This is my go to place for breads, cookies, and muffins. They also use Whole Wheat flour in many of their products. I'm going to be honest with you, though. If you are trying to lose weight, and while whole wheat is better than white, you should not be eating bread in the first place. Sorry, that's my little weight loss rant for the day. This is an excellent store with a great selection of bakery products. They have specials for each day of the week as well. Highly Recommend! read more

The bread here is wonderful. However, the workers are not very friendly. My mom and I went 2 separate days and we had similar experiences. The female worker with the gray haired ponytail on Saturday, 3/7/2020, looked annoyed as I was trying to decide which loaf to buy (I was there only 2 minutes). Today, my mom went to pick up items and 2 female workers (same ponytail lady) were so grouchy and unfriendly. But the bottom line is that this place has fantastic breads, pastries and muffins! It is a gotra try it stop if you are in or pasding through Saint Charles! While in Milwaukee, I looked up this place and was surprised to see that they also had a location right down the street from me in St. Charles! So happy that I found this place! While I cannot consume bread too much, it is very nice to know that I have a high end bakery to purchase fresh, preservative-free, whole wheat bread from. I popped in for about 15 minutes and ended up leaving with a strawberry loaf of bread, lemon poppyseed almond muffin, chocolate muffin, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, and a chocolate chip scone. No, I did not consume all of it by myself! Of course, that didn't stop me from sampling a little bit of everything and wow, you can tell everything was baked fresh! Breadsmith in Saint Charles is amazing! The bread is fantastic as are the delicious muffins and cinnamon rolls. My daughter has a dairy allergy and they have a variety of dairy free options. Really they have all their recipes handy so I'd highly recommend it to anyone with an allergy as they probably have an option for you. At the least you know what you are getting. This breadsmith recently reopened under new ownership. I just met the owner who was super sweet to my 4-year-old daughter. The presentation and place is looking much nicer as well with a whole bunch of fresh pastries lining the counter. So excited the location is back and better than ever. Yum! read more

I might suggest the little sweet roll she has on the front counter, it's a small rolled sweet bread...kind of a cross between a croissant and a sweet roll....so yummy. 11/15/2018 Updated review: This shop has a new owner within the last year. I've been back twice and was disappointed. The chocolate chip cookie was flavorless as can be. I even asked if they make them in shop, and the counter girl said they scoop the dough out of a bucket. maybe the dough in the bucket went stale! For the price, I won't be buying that again! $1.95 per cookie! Next, I bought the zucchini muffin which had been my favorite in the old days. But now I observed they are not as good as grocery store muffins and honestly, resemble in appearance and texture food service muffins in those large trays, probably frozen too. They were not worth the $2.50 per muffin, small too. Had that dense pasty texture of packaged muffins, stale too. Kind of a crime to charge people $2.50 for this junk. Finally, I bought a honey wheat roll, and there was no way that was made that day, the crust was so tough, hard and dry not what Im used to from that shop. I think they must save breads for the next day since they don't bake in that shop, I heard. Someone has to drive the goods over from another location, that's probably why the shop has practically empty display cases when I was there last around 3p. I'm quite disappointed in the shop now. There's nothing for me to get now. Old review, under previous owners: This bakery has great muffins at a size and price I can handle! The zucchini muffins are like what we made at home, great flavor and texture-how it should be! The other muffins are great too, as are the brownies! They have dinner roll sizes of mostly all their breads too, so one can have a smaller portion of the breads. The best part, is that its always fresh! I don't have to ask when they made the items like I would at the grocery store or coffee shops and risk getting goods that are three days stale! read more

The Bread tastes excellent. I will give them that. The problem is that I have a Soy allergy that causes similar symptoms to celiac's disease. The label on the bread says pan coating is canola oil. I called the bakery about a year ago to confirm this and they said "yes sir, 100% canola oil, no soy". I've been having on and off symptoms and wondering why. I called them again today and they said the spray actually contains soybean oil. I really enjoyed their bread but needless to say I will not support their business anymore. It is wreckless and careless to not display accurate ingredients on a package. If someone has an anaphylactic reaction to Soy, it could kill them! BE WARNED IF YOU HAVE A SOY ALLERGY!!!!!!!! read more

I used to buy the French Pan for it's great toasting texture, but there were always holes in the middle of the loaf. I emailed the mgr. with pictures and he sent me a couple of free loaves of dessert bread. So I tried the Honey White. Holes in the middle slices. Tried a loaf of Rustic Italian. Holes in the middle slices. There's a problem with the baker or the recipes. At any rate, I'm done buying Breadsmith Bread. They should concentrate on their church clientele because you can't get holier bread than theirs. read more
