As out-of-towners who knew absolutely nothing about the area, we took a chance on The Breakfast House and are so glad we did. It's a small, no-frills place that's really not much to look at from the outside, and honestly, we almost passed it by. That would have been a huge mistake. The food was outstanding. Sometimes the simplest breakfast is the hardest to get right, and they got everything right. The eggs were perfect, the sausage was delicious, and the home fries were some of the best we've had. The real star was the pancakes. They were light, fluffy, packed with flavor, and easily some of the best pancakes we've ever had. Don't judge this place by its appearance. I don't know how I had never been here before, but we stopped for breakfast there recently and it was great. It has an old school diner/luncheonette vibe on the inside. We sat at the counter. The staff was friendly. Everyone was working hard and happy to help. The food was filling and delicious. Was this a Michelin star, fine dining restaurant? No. Of course not. It's a dive-y, unassuming breakfast spot, with a slant towards Latin items (think breakfast tacos, huevos rancheros, etc), although they have all the standard breakfast items. I was recommended "Breakfast House" by someone and happened to be in the area. I decided to take his advice and give it a try. There is no parking so get ready to pay a meter. The outside of the building seems to fit the area, old with history. Inside was the same. It was a bit run down, but I was okay with that. The one thing I was surprised about was no one seated you. I didn't know if I should wait or find a seat. No one told me. So I walked over to a table, but It was not clean. The waitress came over and cleaned it with me seated. She tried to take my order, but there was a language barrier. She got her colleague who did an excellent job. However, have must report that the food wasn't at the level to report on. The potato's had Spanish spice which I enjoyed, but outside of that, nothing. After I went to pay and there was some confusion, but it was handled. I walked away very underwhelmed. The outside is a cute little store. Inside was smaller than I thought. The lady said we could sit wherever we wanted so we chose a table by the window. There is an extensive breakfast menu with pancakes, waffles, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches and platters. To share we got the Average Breakfast Platter which is two eggs, home fries, toast, and choice of meat. We also got an extra side of sausage. It was a solid breakfast. The toast was crunchy but I wished they didn't pre-buttered it. The bacon was crispy. The eggs over easily were perfectly cooked. The sausage were the typical breakfast sausage links. If you look on Google you'll find that this place is now called Breakfast House. And the pictures you'll see seem to be posted by patrons but seem also to have the quality of high resolution professional photos. The food looks too perfect. There's no way these are patrons' photos. So you think to yourself this must be an amazing breakfast place. Then you get there and you realize it is just a tiny, dinky diner. Nothing special. Nothing pretty. But for some reason it's full of people. That's a good sign. The second good sign is that if you go on a Sunday, which I don't totally recommend, you will wait no less than 20 minutes just to have your food brought to your table. The reason why is from what I can tell they only have one cook and he has a small space to do his masterful work in, and Sundays are swamped. The staff, who may be relatives I think, are so sweet and so considerate that those 20 minutes go by quite quickly. I think the real reason I'll come back is just to watch this man cook. The menu is quite broad for a breakfast place and exceedingly affordable. But what's really amazing is how much effort he puts into everything being so perfect, so presentable, so flawless. I watched intently as a Belgian waffle left his hand to the waitress while he quickly added a bit more whip cream on top, then watched him shift his body to flip and toast a breakfast burrito, then stepping back to pull out the broiler tray below his grill to check on the toasted bagel with cheese, closing it as he leaned forward and poured out a thin layer of eggs for a perfect omelette. All that and you would think that he had multiple arms with the speed at which he works. He is an artist. We had breakfast there and it was great. It's definitely old school, which my husband and I like about it. I had the huevos rancheros and he got the Florentine omelette. The old Vinny's was an institution. The food was consistently good and fairly priced and the specials menu kept you going back on a regular basis. In contrast, The breakfast House is a poorly run successor. The menu is uninspiring and there are not daily specials - Both the food and service are super disappointing. The restaurant is under staffed with untrained servers. I ordered an open face turkey sandwich and the turkey was low cost turkey roll served in a pool of overly salted watery gravy. This is not the homemade turkey that Vinny and his brother would serve up. The clock is ticking and restaurants with poor service, inedible food made with inferior ingredients typically don't have much durability. I expect that this restaurant will fade from the downtown Port Chester landscape. What a shame. read more

First time visiting and we waited a crazy amount of time for our food. They didn't have home fries which is super weird considering they're just chopped potatoes, but they had hash browns which were from a package. We weren't told how it works from the beginning and so we sat around for another 20 plus minutes waiting to be brought the check before someone told us we had to go up, tell them what we ordered and pay for it after our meal. My friend ordered a breakfast that said it came with coffee so she ordered an iced coffee only to be told at the checkout counter that that didn't count as a coffee with the meal so it was extra. It appears they are cash only but it doesn't say that anywhere in the restaurant, you're just supposed to be at the mercy of the ATM if you didn't already know. Vinny's is a classic lunch counter. When you step inside, it is like going back in time. The decor is outdated and if you don't like it, too bad. I doubt they will be updating anytime soon. But that is part of the charm. They serve classic lunches you can eat at the counter, or take with you- there aren't many tables. The menu is short and sweet. Sandwiches, pasta dishes and traditional breakfast dishes as well. On Friday's, there are seafood pasta specials with shrimp or calamari. They have the best pasta sauce in town. You can choose between sweet or spicy red sauce, or garlic and oil. The staff is sweet and always helpful. Don't forget cash! They do not accept cards. read more

Perfectly juxtaposed against Batali's Tarry Lodge, Market, and Wines across the street, this place has been humming along since the early 70s. And it looks like they haven't even noticed the changing decades! The prices apparently have not changed either, which bumps this place from a four to a five in my book. The first time I went, I ordered a classic two eggs, with bacon and toast meal. The waiter asked if I'd like a side of chili with that. Um, yeah! Someone seriously needs to research Port Chester's fascination with the chili. I've only been for breakfast so far (they are only open until 4 or so, and 1 on Saturday and closed on Sunday), but it's some of the best around. I love old school places like this. Though we had the friendliest service from our waiter, the food was - well, as breakfasts out for me usually go..too greasy and blah. Omelettes were a good size but had too much of the flavor of old oil. Hashbrowns were okay and they serve with a ton of sliced toast. Not sure if fair to rate lowly since we both only tried the omelettes. I did think the egg sandwiches served next to us looked delicious! The only reason I am not giving it five stars is because they did not bring my toast until I was almost finished with my eggs, and they brought me buttered toast when I had asked for no butter. I live in Port Chester temporarily for work (I'm originally from Miami) and have tried various nearby places for breakfast but Vinny's usually has been the most consistent for me regarding breakfast options. I am a simple guy who likes my eggs scrambled (or omelette option), bacon and pancakes. Vinny's does all 3 at a good price ($12 for all that when any McDonald's combo in this area goes for more than $10). I like the place even if others complain about how good it was in the past. I'm not from Port Chester or care about its history so whatever Vinny's does for me I judge it just by that. I like it and think breakfast is good. Totally old school looking, with incredibly delicious food and prices that look like they haven't been raised in the last 20 years. A bowl of fabulous home made soup for $2.50. That's a bowl, not a cup. Sandwiches for $5 or less. The most expensive item on the menu is $12. Friendly, sweet service by Mrs. Vinny. Mr. Vinny does the cooking. They open at 5 a.m. daily and close at 4 p.m. This place is the bomb. We will be back, for sure. read more

Vinny's has great food and service, but yesterday they charged me $4.25 for a grapefruit juice, while my breakfast sandwich was $4.50. I've gone there many times and never been charged that much for juice, so I'm pretty upset over this weird up-charge. I didn't leave a tip because I spent almost $20 for just an omelette, coffee and bagel sandwich. Normally it's less than $15 with at least 15% tip.
